Hold up a second.
By "good" theme decks, what do we mean?
Japan's theme decks are, in reality, not competitive, they just have good cards.
There are definitely some good cards here for a very good price. Where's the complaint exactly?
It might just be that this deck is pretty much the same as Plasma Blast Mind Wipe but with a less playable Genesect. You're probably right on playability though, most people at least want something playable. There are good cards here as you said and that's the biggest reason why this product is so popular, cos you get 2 of each of the great trainers in this deck and in reverse. Some of the Japanese decks featured EX cards and I know one even had an Ace Spec too. The problem with these type of decks though is that they can devalue the cards featured, though I'd love for there to a deck like that in the West. Same with this deck, now less people want trade for/buy catchers and ultra balls. Maybe people are disappointed by the Pokemon. My pet peeve is that not only is it a type combo that is too damn common, it's almost exactly the same as a theme deck that came out just over a month ago. However, having a perfect theme deck would mean everyone would go for that same deck (like TDK or Virizion/Genesect).
The fun in decks is making it your own and figuring out card combinations for yourself. Theme decks are fun that way too. They give you a base to build on and you can customize it to be both playable and unique. E.g. in this deck there's an unfinished Porygon line, one could add in Porygon-Z (not worth it IMO) and some plasma energies to change things around a bit. If people really want catchers/ultra balls buy a booster box of PB, I got at least a set of each of the trainers and bonus amounts of some of the better ones like Juniper, plus you get enough Pokemon to start making your own deck (not to mention guaranteed UR cards).
In the end I think $20 is a tad cheap for a product this good, with all these great trainers (I'd say making all the cards non-holo would be better at this price). A bit higher would be more suitable, though I'd be disappointed to pay more of my money, it would still worth the reverse deck with great cards and the extras.
I have a suggestion for this set. I suggest for a product like this to be released every year.
I wouldn't mind that actually. I'd prefer it if they released it along with the set most of the cards are from (so it's less likely to copy another theme deck) and with an appropriate price for the contents. $15/£10 for a tin with promo EX is good pricing so they need to do more of that.
At the end of the day, the fact that they don't usually do great decks like this results in us not knowing how to react and sparking controversy. The market for trainers wouldn't be so bad if they did decks like this in the first place.
