Regionals and OP - Nats & GC Info Coming up? (UPDATED 2/28, Post 144)

Well, not every place is in the center of a population.
Take southern regionals(florida)
There's only two other states that can legitimately feed into FL, and the drives are still 8+ hours. If you're in georgia, it's likely better(since most population in GA is northern) to go to the southeast regionals.

Florida is like... completely isolated. For any other state to come, theyd have to go OUT of their way and drive a crapload of hours away from everyone else, when almost anything is closer to them.

So I have no problems when we hit 100 players, it's pretty good for just us.

But yeah, places like california, new york, ohio, etc... 200 players should be hit, not 130 or so.

It's a sad day when isolated Florida beats NoCal and two other regionals =\

We may have had a low attendance, but we were definitely not a "dud"!!

I apologize. I only meant dud in attendance terms :(

I'm sure it was an excellent event, since I heard it well was well-ran up there :D

Well, it's the last day of our beloved short February, with State Championships starting this Saturday around the U.S. I'd imagine some Gym Challenge and especially Nationals info should be getting close, it would look kind of bad when 'Johnny' wins some States and goes, "What's the prizes at Nationals?" and nobody has an answer. Just something to speculate, I hope we get some info soon.

Hmmm still only T8 at Nationals get invites.

TV for first at Nats!! LOOK OUT SEENA :D

EDIT: Actually just noticed this little tidbit for Nats

Players in the 10 and under age group finishing in 9th through 16th place also receive:

* An invitation to the Pokémon TCG World Championships in 2006
* A Travel Award for the winner to the 2006 World Championships

Not bad. If I was only 10- again...

Just checked out the Gym challenge page and its still only a trip for 1st. I was hoping maybe 1st and 2nd would get it this year considering they eliminated Regionals trips. Considering there aren't more trips per GC or at Nats given out, will there be more Gym Challenges, or simply less trips given out?

I hope its the former.

youre getting 4 more trips at nats than last year. and youre still getting trips from regionals, except theyre to nats instead of worlds. considering nats prizes are only slightly worse than worlds i dont see what the problem is.

Maybe there won't be a compensation, and there will just be less USA players at Worlds this year. I think we've all been blessed at the number of world spots given to the US in the past year or two. Maybe this means there will be more players from other nations? I think that would be fair.

" 9th through 16th Place

* A combination of 18 booster packs from current Pokémon TCG expansions

Players in the 10 and under age group finishing in 9th through 16th place also receive:

* An invitation to the Pokémon TCG World Championships in 2006
* A Travel Award for the winner to the 2006 World Championships"

How cute, but this is a shame. The first time in which the 10- are shown bias is in this POP information. Granted I'm not too surprised that OP's taking a bias to them, because Dave has stated before that POP's primary audience is the younger group, but to award $16,000 worth of prizes extra to the weakest age group, with the lowest attendance, is a surprise.

I hope this is some kind of joke, blatantly admitting that you favor the 10- and then giving them more prizes when the 15+ has been the clear dominant group in this game for so long.

Top 8 at Nationals is nice, but the drop off from 1st to 2nd is RIDICOULUS, $2500 and $400 T.V.?! 9th-16th for 11-14 and 15+ 18 packs compared to $750 and A trip to Worlds for 5th-8th?! Wow.

Gym Challenges are still 1st take all, 2nd gets nothing. While there may be more, where is the West Coast's premier event?

Heck, this isn't even about the West Coast anymore, this is about the U.S., I'm for one appalled by this decision.

Did at the grinder more 10- were let in? Maybe overall there are less and less 10- players that travel and go to the big events, and thus to compensate for that, more trips are given.

But Prime, last year, 10- earned all of the same prizes as the 15+. Purposely giving away MORE prizes for LESS attendance doesn't add up at all.

Well I don't know about your area, but I know in my area, sometimes at cities and other tournaments, there will only be 1-3 10-, and sometimes there are only 2 or even 1. I guess what I'm trying to say that even if they got the same number of trips, if the number of 10- is a lot less in some areas, a lot of those trips might have gone to the same person, and thus not many would have come and more would have been needed at worlds.

Why did PUI let in a lot more 10- at Worlds than 11-14 and 15+? To make up for something I'm guessing.

edit: from a strategic viewpoint, this could be used to draw in more 10- to tournaments and create a new line of future players for the game. Not a bad idea IMHO.

WotC and POP have been trying to get the 10- players into the game forever. They may be the largest buyers of cards, however they are not nearly the largest player base and I'm willing to bet that despite their numbers in terms of cards bought, there is a HUGE turnover rate in who is buying them. It seems like little kids are easier to market and easier to get them to buy cards and get new players for, but as far as competitive play is concerned, its the older age groups by far.

Following the logic that POP gives the most trip to the age groups buying the most cards, it shouldn't be any surprise, Prime, that US players are going to be getting more trips than foriegn players. PUI is going to cater to who is buying the most non-Japanese pokemon cards, and that's Americans.

I'm not necessarily upset that the 10- is getting more trips, probably because I'm so used to it by now. The only thing I'd like to see is that we gain more than 4 Nationals trips for the many Regionals trips we're losing. Its very difficult making it to Worlds, and winning a trip is the only way to go. Its going to be quite difficult to win a trip this year, especially living in such a competitive portion of the country as I do.

wow I was really expecting an increase to Top 8 trips at Nationals for Mexico Nationals too, it was the Worlds 2nd best attended tournament last year, with U.S. Nat's first only, I hope that our scholarship awards are close to what the U.S. gets to compensate for that.

Top8 get trips at Nationals?!?! That'd be cool if it wasn't a 2,000 mile drive.:frown:

I'm going to hold off on any more comments until we know how many Gym Challenges there will be.

By reading through the Gym Challenge FAQ, they're running from May 20th to July 11th. That's 6 weeks for Gym Challenges, it was less before wasnt it? I mean they run even after Nats is being held so I'm going to assume you U.S peeps don't lose many if any at all trips to Worlds.

Alright, Thanks Mudkip.

Gym challenges ran for three weeks last year, June 11th to June 25th. This year we have twice as much time, more invites to spread around...

Yeah. You see where I'm getting.
