So the first weekend of Cities came and went pretty fast. I had some trouble testing due to school work in the weeks leading up to the tournaments, but came up with what I believed to be a BlazeRay list that would have few bad matchups, namely FlyChamp. In my first three tournaments I would play the same list, no changes, as every card served a necessary purpose and helped me win in clutch situations.
Friday the 27th my teammate Matt and I headed north two hours from my home to Kalamazoo, MI for the first available city. He decided to run a carbon copy of my list, but did not fair as well as I, going 2-3 with little experience. The turnout was in the 20's for Masters, and the meta was mainly Gengar decks, Uxie/Shuppet decks, and Blaziken FB-based fire decks.
Kalamazoo, MI - 11/27/09
R1: Jacob w/ Lucario/Weavile?
This was Jacob's first premier event, and I could tell that he was pretty nervous. He started with 2 Riolu and Sneasel, I with Blaze and Baltoy. He hits me for 10 with Kick or something, and I Call for SP's. He plays Lucario PL and Weavile SW, and Shadow Charges 2 Dark to Weavile. I then proceed to bench him using Jet Shoot and Flashbites.
1-0
R2: Keith w/ Flygon/Gardevoir/Dusknoir
Keith sat down just as time was started from the bathroom. We set up a bit late, and he went first, but took a minute or two just looking at his opening hand. When I asked him to at least draw a card, he became irritated, and continued to make many snide comments throughout the match, and complained a lot about his bad start. I T2 Bright Look, KO Baltoy, leaving him with 2 Trapinch and 2 Ralts. He Future Sights for like 2 turns while I KO basics before getting off a Chatot Mimic for 7, at which point I only need 2 prizes. He Candies into Flygon and Dusknoir, attempts Dark Palm and I Spray. He KO's Blaziken FB Lv.X, but I had already set up Ninetales, Roseanne for Lucario GL and OHKO it ftw.
2-0
R3: Chandra w/ Shiftry/Darkrai
I'm kindof surprised to be playing a Pokemom in the 3rd round, honestly, but she is very nice and have enjoyable conversation throughout the match. I had to explained the Galactic engine cards to her as I used them, and that Shiftry's Body has no affect on in-between-turns flips. He draws were pretty bad after I T2 Bright Look her Baltoy FTKO, and I then Jet Shoot for 6 prizes.
3-0
R4: Alex w/ Gengar/Crobat
Alex seems like a pretty cocky kid that just moved up from Seniors to Masters. His ego is only fueled further by being 3-0, so I decide to put him in his place, lol. He shows his opening hand to the guy on his left, who chuckles and says I'll need a lot of luck to win ><
After Pitch Dark, I Guard my active Baltoy, and Call for Blaze/Lux. He Candies, double Flashbites and Poltergeists my Baltoy for 30, KO. Now that he thinks he's hot stuff, I T2 Roseanne for another Baltoy/G, Bright Look/Flash Impact KO his Baltoy, and he gets nothing else in play, really, as I Turn off all his damage and Spray his Uxies.
4-0
R5: Casey S. (Shen) w/ Gliscor/Spiritomb
I'm pretty confident in the matchup, but refuse to underestimate Casey's skill. We both joke around about finally, almost inevitably meeting up in the last round. He's a pretty laid back guy.
He realizes early that the lock will fail, and instead tries to play KO for KO in this game. After I T2 double Flashbite/Vapor Kick his Baltoy FTKO, he promotes a Tomb, and Set Up's for 5 into BTS, Baltoy/Claydol, and 1 Gliscor >< then uses Darkness Grace for his 2nd Gliscor. We then trade prizes: I Flash Impact several Tombs, he Night Slashes for return KOs. Eventually were down to 2-2 prizes. After KOing a Gliscor with Jet Shoot, he attempts to Flash Bite twice, and I Spray both. He Cosmics, flips ONE BLOWER : heads >< Night Slashes for 100, KO, and stays active. After an earlier Luring Flame, his Claydol has 60 on it. I promote a Luxray, double Flashbite KO the 'Dol, take the Night Maintenance for my prize (I Time Walked earlier), put in Luxray X and 2 Lightning, and Cosmic into a Cyrus for the Radar and Lightning I need to KO a Crobat on the bench.
5-0
Top 4: Tim w/ Gyarados
G1: I allow him to KO my Vulpix start after I've Called for 2 Luxrays, promote a Luxray GL, level up, Roseanne for the necessary Crobat and Lucario, and OHKO it. I then Power Spray his Claydol for several turns, and he Impersonates for awhile, and bench him.
G2: He has 2 Karp prized, and never gets a Gyarados up via Power Spray.
6-0
Top 2: Casey S. w/ Gliscor/Spiritomb
Yes, the infamous first city win for Gliscor, lol. Allow me to explain.
G1: I start Vulpix/Baltoy to his Tomb. I have a Claydol T2 from the opening hand, but no supporters, and draw into only a Cyrus off my Cosmic. Therefore, I am unable to get any SP Pokemon in play, or any other Pokemon for that matter, since I cannot play a Radar. Next turn, he Flash Bites, Q's his active, attaches a 2nd energy to bench Gliscor and KO's my Vulpix, forcing me to promote Claydol. I can play trainers now, and get in a Blaziken and another Claydol off of Cosmic Power using BTS, but he is able to lock the active Claydol for a few turns. I eventually Spray and use Bronzong to retreat it, and begin a comeback, but once he gets down to 2 prizes to my 3 I scoop, since he can Night Slash for the remaining KO's.
G2: I get a somewhat decent start, but he T3 Blowers up my Claydol, and I don't bother to Spray as I wouldn't be able to retreat immediately. Next turn I Spray, get Bronzong, Galactic Switch, attach, retreat and KO the Spiritomb. On his next turn however, he Cosmic Powers. He Super Scoop Ups. Heads. Cosmic Power again. Super Scoop Up. Heads. Another Cosmic Power. DOUBLE BLOWER BRONZONG and lock with Tomb... >< Seriously?
My hand at this point is 4 Pokemon and 2 Trainers, all unplayable with my full bench and Tomb active, so I am forced to Cosmic 2 for 1 for at least 6 turns before the Power Spray finally comes. Playing ridiculously fast now, I retreat, Bright Look/Jet Shoot the bench Gliscor after Turning the Luxray to ensure the same happens next turn. I repeat the process lighting fast to get prizes to 3-6, his turn, and there’s nothing he can do to stop me from taking the 4th prize to force sudden death. Right after he draws his card, time is called. =/
Lame! But credit to Shen; his deck worked in the clutch, where mine failed.
6-1
Oswego, IL - 11/28/09
Saturday morning I get up at 8 to make the 3 hour drive to Oswego, IL. The tournament location wasn't in Google Maps, and the directions I left me in a subdivison.. So I asked the people in it for help, and eventually arrived late. I wasn't hte only person lost, so the tournment didn't start until a half-hour until after planned. The turnout for masters was in the 20's, and the meta was a lot of Gengar/Gallade 4, SP, and Gliscor/Tomb, with strong individual decks like Kingdra and GG.
R1: Jerry w/ Salamence/Delcatty/techs
I T2 Bright Look KO Baltoy and Jet Shoot numerous Bagons, Delcattys (w/ the help of Bats), and Nidoran F for 6 prizes.
1-0
R2: Ryan B. (BigginZZZ) w/ Flygon/Nidoqueen/Mewtwo
So I have no idea how I'm gonna pull this off, lol. He starts Trapinch and Mewtwo to my Blaze and Calls for two Baltoys >< I discover that both my Ninetales and Crobat are prized, both of which I needed to KO a Flygon X. The match proceeds pathetically from my side, as I keep ending up short by some card like a Gain or a PokeTurn to do what I want. I Time Walk for Ninetales, and KO the previously damaged Flygon, but then he promotes Mewtwo X with Expert Belt, and I scoop.
1-1
R3 Josh W. (JWittz) w/ Shuppet/Uxie
It was cool to meet Josh, as I rather enjoy his YouTube “Prof-It” videos. He’s a pretty cool guy, and plays violin as well!
He started the game with a misplay, Fading Out into his own Spiritomb =/ He retreats, does some stuff, and sends up Mr. Mime to stall. I assume he can’t be playing more than 3 energy, and Luring Flame up his Tomb until Q’d, and then the Uxies, forcing him to retreat or bottom deck away the energy and allowing me to Power Spray while I build a Luxra w/ 3 energy to take out Mime. After KOing the Mime, I Spray two Uxies to seal it.
2-1
R4: Kevin B. w/ Gliscor/Spiritomb
Kevin is another cool guy, and is a friend of Shen’s running a similar, if not identical list. He gets a T1 Claydol off of Spiritomb, but I T2 Bright Look/Jet Shoot it, leaving him crippled with 2 Gliscor and a Tomb. I KO the Tomb next, and Spray the Uxie on his next turn. He scoops, as there’s no way for him to set up.
3-1
R5: Clinton C. (SpadeAce) w/ BlazeRay/Garchomp C/techs
His start is quicker than mine, and his Garchomp is clutch in the mirror. He puts 20 on my Blaze X with Uxie, and I take the first prize after stalling with Luring Flame, but he promotes Chomp, levels up and attaches Expert Belt, making for a formidable 130 HP monster that I can’t OHKO w/o Ninetales. He Kos my Blaze with Claw Swipe for 30+20+40=90 plus the 20 from Uxie (><) and its downhill from there. I try to force him to PokeTurn it by Croakpromo’ing back, when he promotes Mismagius, Flashbites, and discards my Gain and his Expert Belt for 40x2.. I whiff on the Gain I need next turn to KO Mismagius with Blaziken, and whiff again a turn later on a Gain for Croak to KO his Luxray X. Fail.
3-2
From Oswego Saturday, I make a 3 hour drive to Lebanon, IN, to stay with my friend MacKenzie’s family, who are awesome. We get Subway, watch SNL, and I leave the next morning for Columbus, OH to finish off the road trip.
Columbus, OH – 11/29/09
Masters was 29, and the meta ran mainly BlazeRay, Gengar, and Gliscor/Tomb.
R1: David D. w/ Salamence/Togekiss
David is a nice fellow who is very Pokefriendly. I start Unown G to his Togepi, attach and pass. He plays Bagon, Baltoy, Set Ups Uxie, Candies into Togekiss, attaches 3 water to Kiss and Flips for the donk… TAILS, for 40. And I STILL have only been donked once! Huzzah!
I get a Baltoy, Luxray and Lucario in play, and poise myself for a comeback. He KO’s the G, and I Bright Look/Flash Impact Baltoy. He sets up a Salamence SW while stalling for time. I KO stuff, and he finally promotes Sally, but could not acquire the 4th energy. He direct hits for 50, I retreat, double Flashbite, Color Shift Ninetales and KO.
1-0
R2: David B. w/ Gengar/Aerodactyl
I had beaten him in Battle Roads but came up short here. After Luring Flaming up Baltoy early, he drops Relicanth/Fighting, forcing me to reconsider my options. My ‘Dol has 20 on it form Aero, and I have 2 tools in play (G, Gain). I Bright Look/Jet Shoot Relicanth, but he gets in a Claydol and 2 Gengars. I get up 3 to 5 on prizes and KO the Claydol, but stupid Aero sets up Compound Pain, and he scores 2 Kos, tying it. I Trash Bolt/Trash Bolt Gengar X, his only Gengar in play, and he flips heads on Fainting Spell, which is lame. With no Claydol and only a Haunter and 2 Aeros in play, I think I can win it, but one of his 3 cards in hand is a Bebe’s, and he gets the Gengar to sweep.
1-1
R3: Melissa w/ Staight Gengar
I T2 her active Gastly, forcing Baltoy active, but she goes through a plethora of PokeDex, PokeDrawer, Super Scoop Up and 2 Uxies to get in 2 Claydols and 2 Gengars! I keep only 1 trainer in hand all game, and force her to do only 30 while I score some quick KOs. I end up winning on time 2-4, as the game slows when she continually Levels Down my X’s and neither of us can do very much damage.
2-1
R4: Jackie w/ Rampardos/Metagross LA
I was dreading this one, lol. We trade off many Jet Shoot/Crobat KOs for Head Smash KOs. She Guards Claydol and Metagross, which is lame. I Spray many Magnetic Reversals. There comes a point where I’m up 1-2, and have only a Luxray GL that can threaten her. She flips for Magentic Reversal, tails. She Cosmics, CANDIES INTO ANOTHER METAGROSS… tails. *Relief.* She KOs the active, and I Bright Look/Flash Impact Crobat for the final prize.
3-1
R5: Heather w/ Gliscor/Spiritomb
She starts off with 3 Gligars to my Blaziken. I just use Jet Shoot until she levels up a Gliscor finally, Spray. She retreats, levels up the other Gliscor in play, and I Spray that one as well. She poisons me and returns to the hand, and then I Bright Look/Jet Shoot Claydol and sweep.
4-1
Top 4: Ryne w/ Flygon/Machamp/Nidoqueen
G1: He gets in 2 Claydols T2 and gets 2 Flygons and a Queen. Scoop.
G2: All three of his Claydol are prized. YES, ALL 3. I get up 4 prizes before he gets in Queen and starts putting on the hurt, but I Ninetales it and win.
G3: I take an early lead by KOing his first ‘Dol, but he eventually gets in another. I’m up 2-4 at one point, when after Roseanne-ing and letting him cut, we realize my Azelf had fallen out of my deck and was laying midfield. Whoops! I get a caution and we return it to the deck, since it was the last action that had occurred. Anyway, he gets in a Champ, and there’s little I can do about it. Time runs out on his turn, 2-2, and he Take Outs, but I didn’t matter. I had nothing going.
4-2
Afterwards I stick around for awhile and play a game with a cool guy named Steven. My set up is poor and he kicks my you-know-what. We compare lists and discuss metagame, while watching the finals. I then make the 3 hour trip back to Muncie for class in the morning, and relax.
