Returning a pokemon to your hand

I'm still new so sorry is this is a dumb question.

When a card has you return a pokemon to your hand do you return all stages of that pokemon or just the current form? So if you return a Gengar to your hand does gastly and haunter also go back?

It depends on the effect.
Some state the top evolution stage.
Some effects just say "the Pokemon".
If it just says "the Pokemon", return all stages to your hand.

Its always best to mention which card's effect you are asking about.
