Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Rose Quartz and Onyx

chapter 21: Lol TGC ftw? The Blaze thing is really getting interesting! Oh, and is Crystal ever going to fix her pokegear?

Yeah, a quick two-chapter TCG dedication. I couldn't resist. <3 And that's...actually a good question! I don't have it planned for her any time soon. She got it done, I think, way later on when she meets Kaien finally. OMGZ SPOILERZ.

I just finished reading the entire thing. I thought I'd never catch up, the chapters are so long.

I really like the entire Blaze thing, and the Mareep incident was just... lol.

Yeah, the chapters are kinda long...Old habits die hard, I suppose.

Chapter 22- Tournament End

“You’re all set for registration, Ms. Hikara. You can hold onto your deck sheet until the first battle is underway. But, er…” the registration clerk paused, glancing over to the Charmeleon, his claws tightly grasping his deck sheet and his firetruck red deck box. “I…are you serious that he wishes to enter?”

“Trust me, he’d haul my butt otherwise,” Crystal rolled her eyes.

“Well, he is a Pokemon. Normally we don’t allow for competitors other than humans…would you mind if a judge spectated on a practice match between you two?”

“Uh…sure. I won’t mind.”

“Hey, I’m heading off to the sidelines now. You know the tournament rules- no watching in on matches less you’re a judge,” Kara nudged the gifted one’s side as the receptionist bustled off to call a judge. Popcorn rested in the medic’s hands, and she occasionally took a bite to eat from the greasy bag. “Best of luck to you two, eh? Here’s to hopin’ you can win in the tourney.”

“Ah, of course.”

“Alright, I’m outta here.” With that, the girl proceeded to look upon a trade occurring a table away.

“So, the Charmeleon wishes to participate?” A voice from behind startled the youthful Hikara, and she spun around. There stood a man near the end of his thirties, bearded and moustached with tree bark brown hair. A simple stopwatch hung from his neck on top of his red and black shirt. It was emblazoned with the TCG Organized Play logo.

“Ah, yeah,” Crystal nearly studdered, caught off guard by the man.

“Alright. Mind if I watch a quick match between you two?”

“Sure…how many prize cards?”

“Three should do it.”

“Okay…” the gifted let her eyes fall upon Blaze, who gazed up impatiently. His clawed foot tapped impatiently on the tiled floor.

“Well? What’s the problem with Mr. Goatee here?”

“Uh…he just wants to watch a quick three-prize warm-up match between us,” she muttered beneath her breath.

“Sounds fine to me. I need a warm-up match anyways, and cleaning your clock would be a great warm-up,” the Charmeleon smirked.

“Yeah, yeah, sure. You just think that, flame-breath.”

“Do I sense some disrespect? Because I can fix that real quick like, you know.”

“Like you calling me kid is respectful.”

“You earn my respect, kid. It isn’t provided on a silver platter,” he snorted.

“You earn mine too,” the blonde whispered back.

“Whenever you’re ready…” the judge coughed, nodding off to a clear table. Only using her hand to motion over to the playing area, she and Blaze swiftly situated themselves across from one another.

Not too long later, the trainer and Charmeloen were interlocked into a harsh battle. Clearly Crystal had the upper hand; the Charizard line that Blaze used in his deck was no match against the fierce quick water types the newbie trainer wielded with skill. Occasionally jets of smoke and steam huffed out of the lizard’s nostrils in frustration. It took no time at all for the human to be victorious.

“Bah, you got lucky,” Blaze grumbled, slapping down his hand as Crystal did so as well. “If I had just gotten that one last energy card in time…”

“Well, good match, anyways…” she whispered, and watched as he groaned, flipping over his next card. It was the Double Rainbow energy he had been searching for.

“Hmm…I think I’ve seen enough. Even if he can’t speak English, he does point to the attacks and know when the opponent knocks out his Pokemon, even with weakness and the like added. We’ll add him to the roster.”

“Ah, thanks,” Mewster smiled politely.

“Not an issue. Good luck in the tournament. It’ll start soon. And, uh, if he needs anything, a judge will be there for him.”

“Okay.” After the arbiter had left, she turned her gaze to Blaze. “You’re in, bud. I think they’re gonna put you in the same category as me.”

“Of course I’m in. If it was anyone else and I didn’t have to deal with that stupid Absol as an opener, I woulda won. And hey, as long as they don’t put me with the really little kids, I’ll be fine,” he shrugged. Surprisingly gentle claws shuffled and bridged the deck with great speed. Crystal watched on enviously; despite practice, she still could not do any of the fancy card tricks many of her opponents could.

“I woulda won, even if I had a Squirtle start.”

“Rematch, right now.”

“Alright, same amount of prize cards.”

“And now, the top four of the surprisingly small Senior Division!” The announcement caused Crystal to gaze up from her six-pile shuffle. “We have the unexpected Pokemon entry, Blaze! We have reigning Senior Division Regional Champion, Dylan Dvechkin! We have first timer, Crystal Hikara! And we have another first timer, Haku Otak! Your pairings will be up shortly. Each round will consist of three separate matches, two out of three moving up.” Cheers ran around the room rampantly, and the gifted trainer couldn’t help a small blush of appreciation. Even if she was rusty with her first round, she did dominate in all other matches. Kara jogged over, beaming.

“Aaaallllright Crystal! That’s the way to nail em’! You’re guaranteed a huge amount of boosters and stuff now, right?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

“Can’t believe that Blaze made it into top four, though. What’s he run?”

“A Charizard deck. Duh.”

“Ah, that’d explain it. Plays it with ‘Kiss I hope…? Even if he didn’t, his opponents probably try to go light on him at first before they realize what they’ve done too late.” Briefly she gazed at the clock hanging on the wall. Crystal did as well. When did it get to be four in the afternoon…?

“No, he runs some Kiss line. Still, a lot of people are merciless here, you know. Lot on the line.”

“Yeah. So, who are the other two in the four? I haven’t heard of that Haku kid before, and I don’t remember any Dylan.” The young trainer’s eyes didn’t focus on the puzzled medic, though. They stared off into random space, as though trying to gaze off into the future.

“That name…Haku. It sounds vaguely familiar, actually. Can’t remember where…I’ve heard it though.”

“Huh? So you met the kid?”

“Nah, I don’t think I have…just by looking at him, he doesn’t remind me of anyone. Then again, I can’t get a clear look at him, with that scarf in his face and that hat on his head.” Briefly, as though to make sure she was envisioning him correctly, she shot her eyes around the bustling room. Laughs shot out from a table occupied by one of three older players. Alas, though, the bizarre young man was not within their ranks.

“Poor kid must’ve come from some sort of desert region if he’s wearing winter clothes in this area.”

“Maybe. He sounds skilled though. I heard he plays a fire and water deck.”

Kara paused, making sure she had heard the gifted one correctly. “…How does that even work?”

“I dunno, but evidently it works,” Crystal sighed. “He’s gotta have some really weird strategy if he’s using Magmar, Feraligatr and Suicune as his front runners, from what I’ve heard.”

“…That isn’t even a combo. At least use Magmortar if you’re playing Magmar, that’s what I say.”

“I really, really am sick of all the Magmortar decks I see around. That, Blissey, and Gardelade. It’s utterly ridiculous,” the duelist groaned.

“Magmortar is an ugly ****, I agree.” The pair jumped a few feet as Kiyo finally made her entrance. “I swear, if I catch a Magmar, I will never, EVER evolve it into Magmortar. It’s not worth it.”

“Ah, Kiyo!”

“Ossu,” she feebly waved. Bandages covered the entirety of her arms, and several, though slight, burn marks were sprinkled over her shirt. She had rolled up her navy blue sleeves and held her coat weakly over her left shoulder. Umbree trotted faithfully next to her, his solemn crimson eyes resting upon his trainer’s wounds.

“Are…are you alright?” Crystal gulped at her burns.

“Hmm? Oh, lotta first degree burns, maybe some second degree ones here and there. Blaze didn’t get me too hard; it’s just a little sore. I would shrug to this, but, you know, it’d hurt?” Instead, she tilted her head to the side. “So how’re you doing in the tournament? I heard a lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ when they announced top four, but that’s all I heard, just about.”

“Ha, good ol’ Crystal and Blaze made it in! Senior Division!” Kara reached over, and shook the girl enthuisiastically. A soft blush came to her cheeks once more.

“No way! They let that gambling little git into the tournament?” Kiyo gawked. “I thought they didn’t allow Pokemon around! Especially not a fire type, given he could burn the opponent’s deck if he got mad- and trust me, Blaze does not take well to losing.”

“Fortunate for us that he’s only lost a match near the end then.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

“And twice against me.”

The fire trainer forced a sarcastic laugh. “Ha! Twice? He didn’t burn your deck? That’s surprising.”

“I think he knew what kind of trouble he’d be in if he didn’t abide to the rules and the like.”

“By the way? Where’s Blaze’s Pokeball?”

“Uh, I have it. He gave it to me. He said I was his substitute trainer until he’s cooled his head a little bit…” Crystal muttered, withdrawing the aging orb.

“Ha, entrusting himself to you. What, he’s on your good side now or something?”

“Like I know.”

“Well, I’ll just be taking that, then-” the sable-haired trainer reached for her capsule, but her student was too quick in her movement. “Huh?”

“Ah, something tells me Blaze won’t do well in the tourney, and he’ll be a little mad still and want to take it out on you. Best hold onto him for a day more, ne?”

“Don’t get too attached to something that isn’t yours, Crystal…” Kiyo warned with a hint of a snarl.

“I know, I know…I just don’t want to see you two in a huge hissy fit again. You’ve taken enough damage as it is…”

“Oh, you haven’t seen the training my mentors put me through. That…was brutal. Slavedrivers,” she hissed at the last, shaking her head. “Even with type advantage to their Eeveelutions, too…”

“Type advantage to their Eeveelutions? You had more than one mentor?” Mewster leaned in intently.

“Yeah. I had one that liked poison, grass and fighting types, and the other favored ice and dragon types. Both were extremely strong and kinda, I guess, influenced who I am today.” Briefly, and slightly wincing as she did so, she exasperatedly ran her fingers through her hair.

“You mean a slavedriver,” Kara butted in, stealing the exact words out of Crystal’s mouth.

“Pshh. Maybe. I’m nothing to them or the **** my brothers sent me through before I went out the first day of my training, and making it to Violet City, let me tell you that. Damn that Kaien…”

“What happened?”

“Eh? Well, uh…” Before words could form, the judge running the tournament cut her off.

“Top four competitors of the Regional Championships, Senior Division! Your postings are up! You are also reminded that you must separate out your deck for a deckcheck! Remember that the semi-final matches will consist of three rounds each thirty minutes long, best two out of three proceeding up to the finals!” he announced.

“Oh, that’s my cue. I have to go!” Crystal gulped. She scrambled to shove the slippery cards back into her Kanto deck holder. “Tell me later about it, will you?”

“Yeah, sure,” Kiyo shrugged apathetically. “If you remember.”

“Okay!”

“Good luck Crystal! You’d better make it in to the finals, I swear!” Kara punched the air.

“Great, now the little trainer has her own cheering section. By the legendaries, and I had to wait till I got my third badge from Whitney until I got a fan following,” the fire trainer groaned sarcastically. “But yeah, good luck and all that.”

“Ah ha ha…thanks guys.” With a sheepish grin, Crystal rushed over to the sheet stapled to the wall, where an impatient Charmeleon waited.

“Hey, what table am I kicking tail at?” Blaze gazed up.

“Hmm?”

“You know I can’t read it. Which table am I at?”

“How’d you get to your other matches then?”

“Judge called me over.”

“Uh huh. Well, let’s see…” Crystal let her eyes fall upon the match-ups, and quickly found her number and Blaze’s.

“I’m at twenty-five, you’re at twenty-seven.”

“Why the **** they have us at twenty-five and twenty-seven?”

“So I wouldn’t clear you out?”

“No, I meant one and two, you know!”

“One through twenty-four are in use for the Masters Divisions, probably. They had two more rounds than us, because they’re such a big division.”

“Yeah, well…don’t they know that I’m worthy of number one?” he growled lightly, readjusting his grip on his deck box.

“They’re humans. They don’t know that you’re the leader of a mob.”

“That’s mafia to you, miss,” Blaze shook a claw chastisingly, though the smirk on his face spoke otherwise. “Well, here’s to hoping you win against…whoever it is you’re battling, kid.”

“Crystal.”

“Kid,” he stuck out his tongue teasingly, before cackling and running off.

“That Blaze…” she sighed, before glancing back at the charts.

Haku Otak (4-1) vs. Crystal Hikara (4-1)Table 25

That Haku kid…well, hopefully this’ll be quick with a water deck… Leaving the posting area with that thought in mind, the blonde quickly took off, finding her proper destination. Blaze and the former champion were already busy with cutting their cards and six-pile shuffles, but the new competitor that was Crystal’s opponent was no where in sight. Maybe, if I get lucky, I can get a buy to at least second place, she thought rashly as she separated Pokemon, trainers, and energy cards, but her hopes of that happening were cut short; soon the male of thirteen or so settled himself down across from the female, bringing a deck box adorned with three dog-like creatures dashing away from the mythical Burnt Tower. He gazed up with clouded brown eyes; the rest of his face was well covered.

“Hey,” he gruffly muttered from beneath his scarf.

“Hi. …I’m Crystal Hikara.”

“I know,” he nodded. “Lot of talk about you nowadays.”

“Yeah?”

“What, with Team Missile putting your name and head on bounty posters in the Underground? Of course.” A cold chuckle emitted from his hidden mouth. Crystal gulped. He dully dished out the different types of cards while a judge counted and examined the sleeves. “I’m surprised you have the guts to come here and play in such a well known tournament.”

“Why? There aren’t any Team Missile members in Eclipse, last I-”

“Your sources are wrong.” The girl gazed up to the man questionably. Her blue eyes were slowly filling with fear. “Listen…I have connections. I know when Team Missile is around, and let me tell you something…they are everywhere in desperate search for you.”

“Who are you?”

“Old friend, I suppose,” he shrugged as he began the process of shuffling his deck.

“I don’t know of anyone by the name of Haku…”

“…I see.” His dark eyes narrowed a tad. “Well, there may be a reason for that. I’m under a code name here.”

“Code name?”

“Yes…I was sent here to keep an eye on you.”

“By who?” the gifted one bit her lip nervously, as she began to six-pile once again. The judge muttered something about it being all set. She didn’t hear it.

“Seniors! Your match begins in a minute after your deckcheck is complete! Please set up!”

The boy didn’t speak. Instead, his rugged finger moved up to his eyeball. A contact slid out of place. It unveiled a crimson red eye, piercing kindly into her own eyes. Crystal gasped a little.

“You…! You helped before at the bridge…!”

“Yes, that was me.” His voice became softer than the false alibi he used. It matched the same baritone words he had spoken a month or so earlier.

“So, you’re with Team Missile? Or are you just trying to sabotage their plans?” Ba-dump, ba-dump. She felt on the verge of getting answers, answers that bothered her since the Apollo Bridge incident.

“…I cannot say right now. There are too many people around, and we have to play now.” With quick ease, seven cards filled his hand, though he looked to it disapprovingly, before revealing them as Crystal set her Totodile out in front. “Bah, mulli.”

“Why are you even playing in the game?” she dumbly questioned as she set out her prize cards, sweeping a Night Maintenance into her hand.

Craaaaaaaack! He shuffled the cards noisily, before setting the deck down in front of her. “What’s less suspicious than a cloaked Missile member who is adept at the Trading Card Game? I tell you one thing…cut if you wish…Team Missile trains to kill and control, not to play what the majority of people think is a children’s card game,” he joked, finally setting up his side of the arena. She was about to allow herself to laugh, but the judges descended upon them like moths drawn to a fire.

“Seniors! You have an hour for each of your matches. You may now begin!”

Deep within the third match, crystal blue eyes focused hard on the cards in her hand. Both players were down to two prize cards, and it was difficult to gather the energy and attach it as she normally did, given her Croconaw and Blastoise were nowhere in sight in her deck. The mysterious Otak appeared to be in an energy crisis himself, what with his Suicune in the active slot of the playing field and no energy attached. The game had fallen into a stall war.

“Go,” he mumbled after drawing his card. Crystal then did the same, hoping for that Double Rainbow Energy so that she could start the assault with her Feraligatr. However, she was highly disappointed when she found the next card to be a Wartortle. She added it to her already massive hand.

“End,” she groaned. “This is ridiculous.”

“Mmm…” After drawing his card, he frowned, simply adding it to his hand. “…go.”

“Alright…where are all my energy, I swear…?”

“On the bottom of the deck, probably. That’s where all mine are sure to be.”

“Maybe…” However, Crystal was pleasantly surprised as her wish was finally granted- the same card that was plastered over with so many different colors in the two orbs was now within her hand. She beamed, and quickly attached it to the Feraligatr. “Dee-Arr-Eee on Feraligatr, and then Breaking Tail for fifty.” Dice were soon swept around the playing field so that the five dots of the die were on top of the holographic card. After that was settled, Crystal paused for a moment to pluck a spare Magmar from his hand and send it to the discard pile. Haku wasted no time in drawing his card, attaching it, a fire energy, onto the Magby in waiting, before he called.

“End.”

“Okay…” she muttered, gazing at the field after drawing a Bebe’s Search. “Breaking Tail for the knock out, and I get to discard another card from your hand…” she held herself from chuckling, and quickly drew her prize as he sent out the poor Magby. Another card was sent to the graveyard of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Her hands were trembling in excitement.

“Alright…” Soon, another energy card found itself attached to the firespit creature. “Baby evolution to Magmar. And, might as well do Flamethrower for fifty…” he muttered, discarding a random energy off the creature with three upon it already. Crystal didn’t even pile on the damage.

“Breaking Tail. That’s game,” she asserted, and let her hand down. He nodded, his features softening, yet was hesitant about his hand. “So what did you have in your hand?”

“Not much.”

“Come on, I want to see.”

“Do you really?”

“Yes.”

“Alright…” he sighed, and let it fall. Crystal only had seconds to gasp at all of the water energy within his hand and the supporter Roseanne’s Research before the cards were all swiped together and shuffled back into the deck where they belonged.

“You-” she began, words failing. He was swift to cut her off in a harsh whisper.

“Listen. Team Missile has to hear from me soon, given I lost to you. They’ll want exact coordinates on your location, everything. I’m going to have to tell them that. But, I’ll stall for time as long as I can. When you’re done with your next match, get your prizes, get your companions, and use the back door exit, and head off to the north until the sun sets, which will be soon, then head to the west towards Noontide.”

She sat dumbly at the table, staring at him. Only two questions formed at her lips. “…Why are you doing this? Why did you let me win?”

“Hmm?” he turned, appearing confused.

“You had so many water energy in your hand…”

“Maybe…” he shrugged. “…Ha, I guess I wanted to help you in more ways than one. Besides, I can get all the boosters I want with the stained paycheck I get, anyways…”

“That doesn’t answer my question.” Crystal rose to her feet, and so did the teen.

“Well, that was a good few matches, anyways. Thanks.” He outstretched his hand, and the girl slowly took it. “As for my reason…I’ll explain it the next time we meet. Just keep in mind that the only place Team Missile probably won’t be able to follow you will be in the mountains and in the snowy regions. Always keep your guard up from now on. And be strong, Crystal. Be stronger than I was…” At that, he gazed ashamedly away, and headed off to the judge to claim his prize.

“Be stronger than you were…?” the blonde softly muttered. Just who is this guy, and why is he part of Team Missile? Why does he wish to help me, as well? Regardless of any thoughts that crossed her mind, she once again began the tedious process of separating cards into a half-dozen piles face down in front of her. She cast her eyes wearily at the table where curls of smoke rose often. Eventually, the cool, curly haired boy no older than Crystal revealed his hand to signal the end of the game. Blaze angrily threw his cards down, growling profanities, and local psychic Pokemon were at the ready to dispatch of the threat if necessary. The Charmeleon swiftly gathered his cards and left in a fuss as their judge marked the winning match. The boy peered over, and offered a small smile.

“…And to fourth place, to Mr. Otak, I bestow sixteen packs of the latest expansion. Let all your rares be Level Xs. Oh, and you also get this nifty Mysterious Treasures wallscroll.” Massive amounts of cheering and clapping echoed through the playing area, but all the gifted one could do was stare as he sheepishly shook the judge’s hand and the like. Unlike most players, though, he didn’t settle down to rip up his packs so rashly; instead, they were buried within his thick jacket. “To third place, our surprising contestant, Blaze! Twenty-four boosters, a wallscroll, and some very cool stickers and a notebook! Congratulations, you Charmeleon, you.” At the sound of his name, Blaze beamed up, greedily taking all of his prizes.

“Hey, kid! Gimme a hand with the boosters! I can’t open em, less I damage them!” the fire-type growled, setting his cloth-like gift aside, and pointed to his cards.

“You know, gotta wonder where that Charmeleon became such a card shark,” Dylan suddenly noted from beside the girl. “Played some seriously quick cards in his deck. Somehow he made Charizard playable… Either that, or he knew just how to manipulate his deck and guess how I was gonna cut it to draw excellently. Shenanigans, maybe.” He paused for just a moment, before turning fully to the girl. “I’m Dylan Dvechkin.”

“Crystal Hikara. Pleased to meet you.” After the formal handshake was exchanged, he gazed back off to where the Charmeleon was now throwing a tantrum that he couldn’t get his card packs open. He rudely gestured to the female, and then thrust his claw at the packs.

“Get over here right now, you-!”

“Wonder what he’s rambling about.”

“Probably the fact that he has claws and can’t get his boosters open…”

“What was that?”

“Oh, nothing!” the blonde shrugged hastily, trying to recall her words. “I mean, just look it how he’s struggling with them and yelling like that.”

“Yeah, I guess. You train…Pokemon?” vaguely, he nodded to her waist where her team lay dormant.

“Huh? Yeah, I do.”

“Like your siblings, eh?”

“Oh, you’ve heard of my brother and sister?”

“Yeah, both. Terribly strong trainers, no? I’m sorta envious.”

“Why? Don’t you have your trainer license?” At that, his eyes gawked off once more at the Charmeleon.

“Ha…basically, all my life, it’s been a matter of the trading card game. I became pretty good at it…well, some call me the prodigy of it, to be honest. My mother was surprised when I began winning so many different matches and the like, and so she got into it herself. She was never into ‘the brutality of pitting real Pokemon to fight’, but I guess, like every other kid my age, I enjoyed the thought of taking a Ralts or something of the like and heading out on my own into the world to train.”

“Ralts?”

“Yeah, it’s my favorite Pokemon.” He swiftly held up his deck for a second. “Sad that Plox is the only way to really win consistently these days. Sick of playing it. I really wish Mag was playable again.” At that, the gifted one held back her disgusted expression. She had seen enough of that deck to last her a lifetime. He caught on quickly to her distaste, though, and afforded a smirk before continuing.

“Well, anyways, on my tenth birthday, they basically gave me two options; the first was to continue to participate in the championships and get a booster case filled with packs from the latest set, and the second was for me to catch a starter from the area I come from. Trust me, where I come from in Noontide, they’re all fire types or ground types, and I really can’t stand Numel and Slugma. So, I took the first choice, and then that was that. I can’t get my trainer’s license without my parent’s permission, and they aren’t giving it to me until after next season is over with and I go to Worlds, after I get admitted to the Master Division. Thus, I’m kinda regretting that choice. Who knows? Maybe I woulda gotten lucky and got a Magby as a starter if I looked hard enough for my first starter.”

“Wow…that’s pretty sad…”

“Yeah, a little. So, you into the card game and travelling, too?”

“Uh, yeah. I started training just short of six months ago, actually.”

“You any good yet?”

“Uh, I have the first two badges of the region.”

“Could I see?”

“Sure…” Crystal was quick to unzip one pouch of her bag and pull out her trainer card. He looked it over with fierce intensity in his eyes.

“What are your Pokemon?”

“Uh, I have a Mareep, an Oddish, a Poochyena, a Torchic, and a Dratini.”

His head snapped up excitedly. “A Dratini? Aren’t those super rare?!”

“Ah, yeah, but I guess all my Pokemon are rare in some sense or another…”

“Not Torchic, Poochyena, or Oddish. I read that they were very common. What was your starter?”

“Well, actually, my starter was…kidnapped.”

“Kidnapped? Why? By who?” His face dove into sympathy.

“Team Missile.”

“Why would they want to steal your starter? Was it really rare?”

“Ah, a Pidgey. They stole Flora- that’s the name of my Oddish, by the way- but she managed to escape and find her way back. I don’t know anything of where she is right now.”

“That’s so sad!” Dylan pouted. “Seriously, why would they want such common Pokemon?”

“It wasn’t the Pokemon they were after.” The Regional Champion opened his mouth to question what it was, though he was cut off.

“Senior finalists! Report to table twenty-five for your matches!” the voice cut off the boy’s comment.

“…looks like we’re up,” Crystal noted softly.

“Yeah…” he nodded, though gazed at the girl for a moment. “Well, best of luck.”

“Ha, thanks. I’m sure I’ll need it against you.”

“Indeed.” Once more, handshakes were sent between the two and they went off to battle.

“…and that’s game three. I can’t do anything…”

“Nice, great game, Crystal.”

“Yep, not a problem. Really hard deck to beat.”

“Yeah, it does very well. It’s Plox. This is the metagame right here. Don’t take that loss as anything bad or anything.”

“Oh, of course not! …but I will take that badly! Oh, if only I could have stalled for one more turn…!” she groaned as she unveiled the top card of her deck. It was the Wartortle she had been looking for.

“Well, that’s the luck of the coin flips, I guess,” the curly haired boy shrugged, gathering his cards and quickly shuffling them. “It was fun, anyways. I haven’t been stalled for so long in trying to get my Night Maintenance or the Premier Ball to get the Gardevoir X you threw away first turn.”

“Ha, yeah. Love Absol.”

“Gardevoir and Gallade is better.”

“It was that Dusknoir that did me in, I swear to the legendaries…!”

“But I like kicking Pokemon out of your benched party!”

“And stealing the effects of my supporter cards.”

“That too,” he smirked.
“Anyways…” she sighed, and gazed around. Soon the head judge with the goatee was upon them.

“May I have your attention! Coming in the bold second place in a fierce fight to end all, Crystal Hikara! Go nuts with these!”

He suddenly laid out several prizes, and the girl nearly fainted from how many things there were. There was a Japanese-originated binder, within containing matching cards of what were known as the Johto starters. She herself received a huge scroll featuring ancient art of supposed legendaries within the world, as well as pencils, stickers, a key-chain, her Regional Championships badge and her promo card, as well as…

“Count em! Thirty-six boosters! Congratulations, kid.” Several cheers made Crystal beam and even blush. “Oh, and here’s your metal and the five-grand Pokedollar travelling scholarship for Nationals. It’s being held sometime during April, so don’t forget. Make sure to check in on your mail or your email to see if you were invited to participate or not.” The red-ribboned silver medal was soon placed in front of her, and she carefully let it shine in the light. It was a brilliant display.

“And now, to our second time Senior Champion, a full booster box and then some, tons of cool merchandise, a lead crystal trophy, a ten-thousand Pokedollar travelling scholarship for Nats, and this event’s special prize: the choice of an evolution stone or ten Ultra Balls!”

“Ten Ultra Balls!” the blonde gawked at the offer. “But…they cost so much…! I can barely afford Pokeballs as it is!”

“Ah, uh…” he paused, gazing at the prizes. “Ah ha ha, I dunno which to pick. I’m terrible at training stuff.”

“Go for the Ultra Balls!” Crystal cried. “Dude, you have no idea how much they cost! That’ll be really good for when you want to go out on your journey!”

“Eh? Really? What are the evolution stones, though?”

“They’re Leaf, Fire, Lightning, Water, Moon, and Cloud.”

“Cloud Stone? That doesn’t even make any sense,” Dylan scoffed.

“Those are really hard to get a hold of,” the trainer countered. “It took my sister a long time to get a hold of a Cloud Stone so she could evolve her Eevee into an Aereon!”

“…what would you suggest, knowing this?”

“Uh…personally? Unless you have in mind a certain Pokemon for which evolution stone you could use, I wouldn’t suggest the stones.”

“Pokemon like…?”

“I don’t know much about evolution…I know Eevee evolves from most of the evolution stones, though. Uh, Kiyo might know something about them though. Hey, Kiyo! Over here!” she called through the crowd, and soon the onyx-haired trainer with the brunette by her side appeared.

“You win or you lose? And where in the Beghta Region did you get a whole booster-”

“Prizes for second,” Crystal puffed out her chest immaturely.

“Yeah, great job and all of that. Anyways, what’chu want?”

“What do you know about the evolution stones?”

“Eh? Evolution stones?” she pondered, gazing at Dylan. He shrunk back lightly at the mismatching eyes. “Well, there’s Fire Stone, the one I make the most use of. Allows you to evolve Growlithe into Arcanine, Vulpix into Ninetales, Eevee into Flareon, and I think that’s it. Then there’s the Leaf Stone…I heard in rare cases, if the conditions were right, you could get an Eevee to evolve into Leafeon that way. However, the other Pokemon I know of that are affected by it are Gloom, Weepinbell, Exeggcute, and Nuzleaf. Water Stone…Eevee, again, Lombre, Staryu, Cloyster, and Poliwhirl. Thunder Stone…I know Pikachu and Eevee. Can’t think of any others. I dunno. I don’t like Moon Stones, because all the Pokemon that evolve from it are kinda lame.”

“You getting any of those Pokemon when you train, you think?”

“Nah. This Eevee sounds pretty adaptable, though.”

“Ha, yeah. Gotta love it,” Kiyo nodded, and stretched her hand down to pet the Umbreon. “My buddy here is an Eeveelution, too. His name is Umbree.”

“That’s actually a pretty cool Pokemon. …They don’t evolve with a Moonstone, do they?”

“Nope. They only evolve when you train them in the night and they’re extremely close to you.”

“Aw…”

“Well, kid, I’d pick the Fire Stone, if I were you.”

“Of course you would, Kiyo. You’re a fire trainer.”

“And you’re a nothing trainer right now. Hahaha…I say Fire Stone because there’s ample Pokemon to choose, and all three evolutions are decent. Always good to have a fire type on a diverse team to keep you warm and clear out a lot of types easily!”

“Obseeeessed.”

“You forget the training we’re gonna do later, Crystal darling.”

“OH GODS! WHY?!” Crystal shrieked as she remembered such, and allowed her head to rest upon her pile of goodies. Joseph stared blankly for a moment. His eyebrow rose as he pondered the information that had just been fed to him.

“…I’ll take the Ultra Balls, I guess. I can’t think of all those Pokemon and make such an easy choice.” The tiny orbs were then allowed into his hands, and he gazed at them. “…these are so small! I’ve seen grapes bigger than these!”

“That’s because they’re minimized for storage. If you hit the button twice on them, the seal on them comes off and they become normal sized Pokeballs, I think. After that, if you hit the button, they shrink again…” the gifted one drawled knowingly, though lost her train of thought as she saw a familiar face sort of nod glumly to her.

“Are you done trying to look all-knowing in your Pogeymans, Crystal?”

“Yeah…sorry to cut it short and all, but yeah. Gotta go.”

“Aw, alright. Hey, where are you off to?”

“Uh, Noontide, for my third badge.”

“Feel free to try and find me along the road, then! I’ll be at school for most of the time, but it’d be cool to meet up with you again near Mornfall!”

“Yeah, likewise, Dylan. Great meeting and battling you…” Soon the trainer gathered her things, stuffing what she could within her bag and taking the rest in her arms hastily, and began to pace herself to the back of the store the tournament was held in. Her two travelling companions noticed and set off to catch up.

“What’s the rush now, Miss-I-Took-Second-Place?” Kiyo jeered, and Kara elbowed her lightly to hush her up.

“Team Missile,” she hissed in a deadly whisper. “Help me get this stuff and let’s go out the back. My shoulders and arms are killing me…”

“Why not the front?”

“Listen, there was a guy from Team Missile playing in the tourney, okay? We need to get out and head north and wait there until sunset in which case we turn and head towards Noontide.”

“Where’d you get these crazy ideas from? I told you, I checked the area for Team Missile, and there weren’t any faces around!”

“Kiyo, I got the feeling like we should trust her,” Kara sweat as she took Crystal’s wallscroll.

“Oh, you wussies. I’ll go out the front door, if that makes you feel comfortable…”

“I wouldn’t do that, Kiyo!”

“Wiiimps,” the teen stuck out her tongue, and turned to the front door. Kara and Crystal merely gazed at one another before dashing out the back.

“See? Nothing out…here. Oh great. Shoulda listened to that kid.”

Nice chapter and cliffhanger, although the individual battles could probably use more detail. How do you only get a Top 4 in a Regionals?

Because the battles are not important, it's the fact she got in and battled who she did. It's not going to matter in the long run that she played a TGW or something at one point or another in the overall plot of the story, you know what I mean?

teims for chapter 23! CUE THE HILLBILLIE TUNES. Or Cotton-Eyed Joe. I can see it going to that song too. <_< *giggles like a crazy person*

Besides, that chapter was already mad long. I didn't need to add to an already huge chapter. =X

Chapter 23- Follow the Bouncing Pokeball

“It’s…so…hot!” Crystal complained, wiping the beads of sweat off her forehead. The sun beat fiercely down upon the group, and the high temperatures on Route 53 were taking their toll on the new trainer. Kara seemed affected as well, more sluggish in her footsteps. However, Kiyo simply folded her arms.

“God, you’re both wimps. It’s not even uncomfortable yet. What are you talking about?”

“You’re also a crazy fire trainer that’s immune to fire, evidently!” the blonde panted out, crashing down on a nearby rock. Soon enough she was back on her feet; the rock was burning hot. “I need some shade!”

“Wimp.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if I got a sunburn!”

“Oh, come off it. You’re gonna have to get used to different weather patterns if you’re going to be traveling all around the Beghta Region. I can hardly wait to hear you say ‘it’s too cold! I miss the weather on Route 53!’”

“That isn’t going to happen, mark my words Kiyo!”

“Ha, I place a hundred Pokedollars on that!”

“I take your bet!”

“One you’ve lost already!”

“Come on, you two. We’re letting the sun get to us,” the brunette sighed, fanning her face with her hand. “There’s got to be a way we can cool down…”

“Well, I can’t help there. Jormy doesn’t like the heat and won’t come out unless there’s water or a serious situation.”

“Jormyyyy!” the gifted one cried to the Net Ball upon Kiyo’s waist. “This is desperate! I’m getting cooked alive! We all are! Can’t you give us some help?!”

“Crystal, if you’re begging him to come out, it’s obviously not working.”

“Why, Jormy? Whyyyy?!” The only answer to her pleading was a shake from side to side of the teal orb. “Well, there’s got to be some sort of answer for this, then! What about using wind power to cool ourselves off?”

“Skarmory doesn’t like heat. It’s a steel type. His feathers molt and melt together if he gets too much exposure.”

“What about Zaika?”

“His wings are too small, and used more for his own body temperature regulation,” Kara frowned.

“Man! It’s really times like these I wish I had a water type or… or Breeze back…” the youngest whimpered, holding her temples tenderly. The intense sunlight was giving her a headache.

“Breeze?”

“Her Pidgey that was stolen by Team Missile at the beginning of her journey.”

“Oooohh.”

“Breeze may have been sarcastic, but we were…are close. She would want to help out in this situation.”

“Hey guys?”

“Hmm?” Kiyo turned at the medic’s comment.

“Is it just me, or is that a Pokeball wriggling around up ahead?”

“It…is. Either you and me are seeing the same mirage, or that thing is kinda kooky. There isn’t even a red light on the button. It wouldn’t be so strange if it was red and wiggling, but even then there’s no one around and it’s just jostling back and forth…” At this, Mewster finally brought her gaze up to find what her travel companions were talking about. There it was, in the middle of the road, dancing wildly about as though inviting the trainers to pick it up.

“I think that all three of us would be seeing the same mirage,” the gifted girl whispered.

“Wonder if it’s a water type…” Kara pondered, and started towards it.

“Kara, what are you doing?! For all we know, it could be one of Team Missile’s Pokemon that they aren’t keeping in their normal Pokeballs,” the fire trainer hissed.

“Why would it be wiggling so much, then…?”

“Trying to lure you in, which it is doing!”

“Kara, I don’t think that’s so bright either…” Crystal muttered.

“Hey, it stopped wiggling. Okay, there’s a good Pokeball…don’t eat me…”

Hikorume allowed her hand down towards the ball, but as soon as she did so, it quickly rolled back away from her. “Eh?” She took a few more steps forward, in an attempt to get the Pokeball once more, yet again it evaded her by rolling around. A frown found its way onto the young teen’s face. “What is up with this thing?!”

“Evidently it doesn’t like you, Kara.”

“Well, I figured that much. Gah! Get over here, you little-”

Hands swept towards it as the emerald-eyed girl dashed forward, but it simply bounced out of her grasp and rolled teasingly just out of her grip. Kiyo roared with laughter after Kara face-planted in a desperate attempt to grab a hold of it. The Pokeball teased the immobilized teen further by jumping upon her head, then rolling down off her body. Roars of laughter came from the other two trainers.

“That little ball has ‘tude, man! Hahaha!” the eldest wiped tears away from her eyes. “Oh, now it’s getting a little uncomfortable in this jacket…woooooow.”

“Guys, this isn’t funny! Help me out here?”

“Yeah, not getting involved,” the fire-type user jeered after stuffing her jacket away into her huge pack. “If it has ‘tude like that, chances are it’s some bad Pokemon some kid abandoned or something, and it’s waiting for its trainer. …huh? Oh, don’t tell me you’re getting in on it too, Crystal?” Of course, the girl mentioned paid no heed to such remarks, and instead neared closer to the boogying orb. It paused for a moment, rolling back slightly so as to ‘look’ at her, and then wobbled side to side.

Cautiously, she stared back intently at the orb. “Something’s…weird about this ball.”

“Didn’t have to tell me that.”

“No, it’s something else…there’s a small scratch on the button.”

“So?”

“That’s…I…”

Without even bothering to finish her out-loud thought, she dove for the Pokeball. It hopped easily to the side, but Crystal wasn’t going to give up so easily like that. She got to her feet, nearly tripping about, and the chase began.

“Guys, help me catch this Pokeball!”

“And why should I?” Dustren yawned, resting on a local rock formation. Now bored with the smirk still plastered on her face, she followed the movement of the bouncing Pokeball.

“Just trust me! Help me catch it!” the girl screeched as she was forced to slide and swiftly change her direction.

“Oh, by the legendaries this is pathetic. Hahaha…man, times like these I wish I had asked for the camera phone for my Pokegear, so I could put this up on YouTube…”

However, the mentor wasn’t laughing after the Pokeball rolled up the side of the cliff and smashed down upon her head before landing on terra firma and continuing the wild chase.

“Oh, it’s on now, buddie-oh-ball. It’s on!” With that, two were now being led around to catch the ball.

“…Guys? A little help?” Kara whined, still flat on the ground.

“Soon! After we catch this thing!” Mewster hissed.

“You know what? Forget this! Arcanum, catch this thing real quick like!” Kiyo unlatched her Great Ball in anger, and tossed it forth. The light revealed the majestic fire type. The dog locked eyes on the Pokeball. The Pokeball ‘locked eyes’ with the dog.

Soon the Arcanine took careful large steps towards it, and the ball hastily rolled away. Jaws bent towards the dirt, only to be left with soil in the mouth, and not the capsule device. Becoming slightly annoyed now, Arcanum leapt, trying to hold onto the Pokeball with her paw, but it slipped out from her clutches. She took another bite, but this time the ball leapt up onto her head and rolled around in the thick beige fur. Whining at the itchy device, the massive fire type sat down quickly and started to scratch miserably to free herself of the tick.

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me!” Kiyo snarled. “Just what is inside that Pokeball?!”

“Something with good jumping skills, that’s for sure!” Crystal commented back, and rushed up to the poor canine. She fiercely felt through her bundles of warm fur until her fingers latched onto the cool, smooth orb. Yes, she thought triumphantly, though a bit too soon.

Seconds later the ball flew into the air with incredible force, dragging the gifted one along for the ride. “Wha!” she cried, clutching tightly to the ball. The sphere soon bounced around on the ground, fighting to get free like a bucking Tauros. Various rocks and such scraped against Crystal’s skin, and yet she didn’t let go. Soon the orb decided what would probably do the trick, and hopped for the boulder that Kiyo once rested upon. “Gah! Kiyo! Kara! Help!”

“I have fallen, and I cannot get back up!” Kara whined.

“That thing’s moving too fast for me, and Arcanum won’t dare touch it! There’s got to be a way we can slow it down!”

“Slow it down…!” Crystal pondered, before pulling herself up to the orb, which went into a jolting frenzy. Only sparing one hand off the ball, she hastily hit the Mareep’s Pokeball down to the ground before grabbing a hold of the yellow creature the second her form materialized.

“Wha huh what?!” she bleated, confused.

“Hikari, you have to use something- whatever you did to the Pidgeotto back against Aikaze- to slow this thing down!”

“It’s just a Pokeball, though- OH WAIT A MINUTE,” she growled, nearly being tossed out of Crystal’s arms by a jerk to the side.

“Exactly! Do something!”

“You’ll probably get affected too, at this close a range!”

“Just do it!”

“Alright! Don’t say I didn’t warn you!” Sparks danced off the golden wool, and a bizarre purple wave extended from her body. Crystal felt her hands and arms grow numb, and she was forced to let go of the ball. However, the paralyzing wave had done its job, and the ball nearly rolled to a stop. The girl landed roughly to the ground, Hikari not falling as violently as her trainer. Kiyo rushed up with her bag at the ready and threw it over the Pokeball. Soon enough, the compartment was zipped tight. The battle had been won.

“Damn that little thing! Quick thinking on your part, Crystal, though a bit stupid, as usual. You went and got yourself paralyzed, didn’t you?” the eldest gasped for her own breath.

“Uh, I think a little bit. I’m having trouble feeling anything past my elbows on my arms.” Gently she panted, and gazed at beads of sweat covering her cheeks.

“Wonderful! Am I going to have to hand-feed you a Lava Cookie or something?”

“Ick, I hope not.” Crystal finally managed to sit up, and lamely lifted her arms. Her elbow, wrist, and phalanges wouldn’t respond to her thoughts, no matter how hard thought.

“Uh, can I seriously get a hand here?”

“Dramaqueen, you and I both know you can get up perfectly well.” Mismatched eyes rolled, and Kara reluctantly sat up.

“Hey, I’m sore all over from that thing!”

“We’re sore too, in more ways than one.”

“You can’t say anything. I got paralyzed!” Crystal whined.

“Your own stupid movement, as I’ve said.”

“Well, how else was I supposed to slow the thing down, eh? Tell me that, Kiyo!”

“You could’ve let go of the Pokeball and simply asked Hikari to use Thunderwave from afar, dumb-bumb.”

“Ah, well…”

“Dustren, two, Hikara, zero. Cha-ching!”

“Well, shouldn’t we see what’s in the Pokeball at any rate?” the gifted one huffed.

“Yeah, sure. Let’s pray it doesn’t come shooting out of the bag into my face as soon as I release it or something crazy like that...”

Kiyo slowly drew near her bag, and opened up the zipper a few inches. It wasn’t nearly enough to allow the capsule device out, but it was enough that one would think so. However, the ball didn’t try to escape. “Well, there’s some relief…now kammere, ya little sucker…” the experienced trainer slowly slid her hand and part of her arm into the bag, and she rummaged around before pulling out the slowly shaking ball. “Ha, it’s almost shaking in fright, I think- WHOA.” Without further words, the capsule dove out of her loose grip and bounced over to the blonde, almost in a huff. “Jeez, that thing still has spunk?”

“I guess so…” Crystal blinked, watching the orb come to a stop right before her. “…Hey. You in the Pokeball.”

The ball gazed up curiously.

“Come on out and show yourself, will you?”

It seemed to shake its body, as though saying, ‘well, I dunno…you did paralyze me and all of that…’

“Oh, come on. You led us on a crazy chase. Least you could do after you were caught would be to reveal yourself.”

The red-and-white object moved arrogantly for a few more seconds, before rolling over to Crystal’s limp hand. It rested for a moment there.

“Oh, I get it. Okay, come on out…whoever you are!”

The contraption flew open upon the command, bright light and strawberry brown melding together as one color. Soon feathers materialized, and the bird of three-foot-seven unveiled itself. It was a gorgeous creature with well-preened feathers, with gold and nearly magenta plumage. It flapped its wings in slight dis-unison for a moment, before it settled down in front of the astonished trainer.

“No…but…it can’t… …Breeze?!”

“Who else would give you such a hard time, given you ditched me and you went and got a new starter, and went on your merry little journey without me!” the Pidgeotto squawked. Her beak gleamed in the bright sunlight as she grew intimidatingly in size, overshadowing the girl.

“Oh, Breeze!” the gifted one choked, awash in tears, before she leapt to embrace the creature. However, the flying type was too smooth in movement, and left her trainer for dirt. “Oomph! …still have your sassy attitude, I see!”

“Duh. Gotta have sass to survive those lame trainers out there,” her feathers ruffled further, if it was possible. Her eyes fell suddenly upon Kara and Kiyo, and her hazel eyes narrowed. “And who are they? I don’t like Ms. Black Hair over there and her fun bag trick she tried to pull.”

“Oh, those are my two traveling companions, but I’m so, so soooooo happy to see you again! How did you grow and evolve? Why were you in your Pokeball?”

“It’s called kicking grass-type and ground-type be-hind,” she muttered, pausing a moment before she proceeded to preening her right wing. It was the glossier, neater of the wings.

“Oh, I’ve missed you, and your attitude, and your company, and your constant preening, and-”

“Yeah, yeah. I get the picture. It’s about time you found me.”

“I’ve been searching around everywhere for you!”

“Uh huh. Well, you better not have tried to replace me with another flying type, else I’ll have to deal out punishment.”

“Of course not! I would never think of it! I had a hard enough time just hearing the species name Pidgey!”

“Uh huh.”

Crystal was about to continue with her mindless babbling until her Pokegear finally registered the Pidgeotto as her Pokemon and automatically added it to her team. Various updates flew past the screen as the odd contraption beeped and whirred furiously, but it wasn’t these updates the trainer was concerned with; after a moment, the screen settled on familiar text:

Your Breeze has evolved into Pidgeotto since it was last in your party. Rename Breeze?

“And what happened to that thing? Some wild Pokemon try to synchronize with the beeping and threw it out of the loop?” However, the girl couldn’t immediately come up with an answer for that. The Pokegear would probably take a ‘no’ as a ‘keep it as Breeze’, more than likely…and, just by looking at how much she’s grown, surely she can make much more than a breeze… “…What? What’re you looking at, and I don’t need to hear that smart-aleck ‘not much’ phrase…”

Instead of responding, the device was just held to the bird’s eyesight. With distaste she glanced down at it.

“…something something my old name evolved or something?” The ten-year-old nodded at that. “Oh, I get it. You’re trying to get rid of cute ol’ Breeze. I see how it is. Well, if you’re gonna say good-bye…at least have the decency to call me something more appropriate to my gusting power now.”

Crystal waved her hand as to say, ‘and you suggest…?’

“What’s that- oh. You want ME to think of a name, because you’re suffering from name block. I swear, the Pokemon doesn’t get enough credit for the work they do!” the hawk huffed. Rudely she began to preen the already shining feathers of her right wing. “Ha, well, what’s more powerful than a Breeze? …surely Team Missile didn’t suck out too many of your brains trying to get your gift from you to answer that.”

With that, the name hit the girl smack in the face.

“…Gale,” she finally muttered at last, and watched as the Pokegear registered the name.

“Gale?! What kinda cheap name is that? I was going for something more suave and mighty, like Sirocca or even Hurricane!” she clicked angrily.

“Still got one more evolution to go, don’t you? To a Pidgeot, like your parents? Ha, well, hate to break it to you, Gale, but you probably aren’t worth Hurricane or…Stir-up whatever you said.”

“That’s sirocco, though I even gave you a more feminine version of it! It’s a cyclone!”

“If I can’t say it, then I’m not naming you it. Hurricane might be cool, though.”

“That was an absolute joke!”

“I take you very seriously, Gale,” the pink-banged child mockingly grinned.

“You’ll take me seriously when I scrape my talons on your head!” she screeched, fluttering into the air.

“Aaaaht! Not so fast! I think you may want to see some old and new friends before you act so rashly!” Crystal beamed, and held up her four other Pokeballs.

“And now the fireworks really start, besides this whole conversation between those two,” Kara noted.

“When Crystal’s Pokemon all meet, we will all be hiding in fear of World War III,” Kiyo nodded.

“Oh, you two are very supportive!” the blue-eyed trainer sobbed, but the task was done; the forms of her already diverse team melded into the physical realm from light.

“Huh? What up, Homey-C?” Flora bounced around, confused, until her eyes fell upon the Pidgeotto. “…naws! Dat be you, Piddy-D?! Ah, mah numba one homey!”

“I told you not to call me that, you radish,” the bird squawked bluntly.

“Aw, don’t be denyin’ da sistahood of the Nort’, Piddy-D! It runs in ah woods!”

“I would disagree with you, except I can’t understand a word you ever say.”

“Finally, one with common sense and moderate power around here,” Lieutenant Yena cut in, buffly encircling the hawk. “Good to see Hikara knows to catch more than just me and add it to the team. Sergeant Pup, ma’am. Hey, wait a second…” he was about to question his sudden height addition as well as his new body, but Gale interrupted quaintly and quickly.

“…and what’s your problem, doggy? You already trying to kiss up and get on my good side?” Gale huffed, and plucked out loose down from her chest.

“Then again, I am proved that Hikara still captures Pokemon with lack of intelligence…” the dog muttered.

“What be dat, you overgrown, flea-bitten mutt?!” the Oddish hopped over, staring right into his eyes.

“You heard me, half-witted, shoddy ‘Flora’.”

“Ohhh, that’s it, Pup, you’s goin’ down as a nat’nal enemy of da Hood!”

“Will you guys shut up? I gotta blasted headache from all this sunlight and heat and being carried around roughly through that whole incident…” Hikari whined, sparks occasionally flying from her wool.

“Got a hangover, sheep?” Gale called over teasingly, but was quickly silenced by a dirty look and dangerous amounts of electricity accumulating within the cotton. The bird quickly turned her attention to the Dratini, who slithered up beside her and awaited her attention patiently. “…and you are?”

“I’m Dragola! What’s your name, miss birdy?” the dragon type beamed.

“…Gale.”

“Nice to meet you, Gale!” A tail soon held itself out as she politely smiled. All the Pidgeotto did was emptily stare, before said stare turned to Crystal in a twisted questioning face. “Hey, let’s be friends, okay?” The comment caught the flying type off guard, and so did the fact that the powerful serpentine sneakily slid her smooth tail underneath one of her talons. The shake that was forced caused her to tumble back, landing ungracefully. Some of Crystal’s Pokemon laughed at the awkward footsteps Gale took. Even the trainer herself had to suppress a snicker or two.

I hate you all,” the rose-feathered creature decided, peering at all of them.

“Oh, come on, Gale! Dragola’s just a little naïve…”

“A little! It’s like a whole freak show you’ve caught here! I’ve already counted one non-normal speaking Oddish that thinks she’s the black person of the Pokemon community, one incompetent, military-driven brown-noser…no, sorry, black-noser, one creature that appears like she’s on a permanent drug or something, and one that is far too optimistic for their own good! And you! You…!” The bird dramatically pointed over to where Flare was calmly waiting over by her trainer’s side. “You’re weird because you’re normal, and probably are mute!”

“I speak only when I see there’s a need to, and when I won’t be so easily judged.”

“Oh, hit that nail on the head…Crystal, just what am I gonna do? I can’t work with this, this…façade of stupidity!”

“I know you think highly of yourself and stuff, Gale, but I’m sure you’ll get used to them all in time…”

“No. I refuse. I might as well be dead right now. I can’t stand this.” The poor girl sighed, shaking her head as she turned to face her two friends.

“…hey, any idea as to make my Pidgeotto a little more friendly to the others?”

“What, friendly Dragola didn’t work?” the black-haired trainer snickered.

“Trust me, no.”

“Well, if friendliness doesn’t count for anything, go for fear.”

“…Jormy?” the girl beamed hopefully.

“I was just kidding, and come on. You tried calling him once. What makes you think-”

“Hey Jormyyy! I got some food for you!”

“That’ll do it…” Without her say-so, Kiyo’s Net Ball dropped off of her waist in mere seconds, allowing the Gyarados to form with an angry roar.

“AH GAWDS!” Flora cried, huddling behind the canine one she was fighting with not too many seconds earlier. Even the dark type cowered back, but Dragola showed no fright; she slithered right up to where the creature was hovering in air. Gale stared up with some unknown emotion upon her face. Whether it was hate, fear, or something else, Crystal could not decide.

“Blimey, it’s nearly bout a hunderd dagrees out hea! This betta be good, ya wee scallywank!” Jormungand growled, stooping his head low towards the young trainer.

“Ah, yeah, of course!” she hastily responded, digging through her bag. She removed what was to be her before-dinner snack and a lemonade. “Uhh…will this do?”

“Ah, betta than nuthin’, I ‘spose. Say, ye haven’t told that child Kiyou to feed mah more, have ya? I keep gettin’ nuthin but bare table scraps from ha!”

“I have made a note of it, yes…uh, how do I give you the lemonade, though?”

“Ah, just toss it in the’a with that thing ya call food,” the water type demanded.

“In where?”

“In the’a! Like, the’a we breathe?”

“Oh, the air!”

“Yes, the’a.”

“Sorry, just got a little confused with your accent.”

“What about mah accent, child?” he growled, staring down upon the girl.

“I just can’t understand Pokemon accents that well!” she squeaked. So as to avoid pressing questions, she chucked the items in the air. The Gyarados took his eyes off of her, and swiftly moved his mouth to catch the snack. With a mighty chomp, they were gone, and he seemed to soften up.

“Ah, now that be some maighay fine lemanade there! Been so long since I’ve been gettin’ that stuff. Now, why did’ja call me out hea? It’s sorta uncomfortable, with all the dryness…”

“Ah, that’s what I was gonna ask you about, actually. Is there any way you could use some sort of water attack to the sky and make it rain a little to cool us off?”

“Oh, ya mean somethin’ as simple as this?” Aiming his massive jaw to the sky, he set off a major spout of water that flew thousands of feet into the air. Soon, droplets of heavy rain water danced upon them. Kara and Crystal appeared ready to bathe Jormungand in praise and love, as well as Flora and Dragola. Kiyo, Flare, and Gale were not impressed.

“Haha! Thanks, Jormy!” the gifted one grinned crazily up to the creature.

“Ah, any time, missy. Now, you just be sure that ol’ Kiyou gets me mah food more from now on, ya promise?”

“I promise!” With an affectionate pet on the nose in thanks, he returned to the ridiculously small Pokeball. Gale merely continued to stare with that same expression on her face.

“Well, that was refreshing!” Kara decided, giving a short, confident breath, wiping the spare water off her face and from her clothes. “Let’s hurry to the next town before we dry completely off, yes?”

“Sounds like a plan to me!”

“Ugh. Cold. Water. Not cool,” Kiyo hissed, and swiftly turned her eyes to the Pidgeotto. “Hey. Hey. Bird. Yeah, you with the weird feathers.” Death glaring in her eyes as she shook the excess beads of liquid from her coat, she snapped her head to the fire trainer. “Let’s really see your power; use a Gust on me, yeah?”

“Uh, Kiyo? What are you doing?” Crystal groaned as Flare wobbled over and quickly dove into her spherical home, muttering something about feeling ill.

“Drying off.”

“Don’t you have Skarmory or something that you can use instead of ordering around my Pokemon?”

“Your weak Pokemon.”

Even if she wasn’t able to understand the language, the blonde knew at once that Gale took the tone of voice as a terrible insult. With a sudden gleam from the hawk’s eyes, she leapt up into the air, and immediately started to allow dust and debris to fly everywhere in an attempt to throw the arrogant trainer away and give the raven-haired teen more than her wish. As soon as the mighty blasts of air began, Kiyo planted her feet and closed her eyes to avoid dirt in her eyes. Even the high winds weren’t enough to blow her away, and soon the flying type gave up, settling back down on the ground, panting and favoring the slower of the two wings. Kiyo simply smirked, shaking her sleeves a tad before throwing her jacket back on. “Might wanna work on that Gust if you wanna hurt something, kid…”

“You’re so mean!” Crystal belted to her comrade.

“Not like she can understand what I say anyways, right? That’s your department, Mewster…”

“Hey, Gale is smarter than you would expect her to be! I’d know- I’ve known her since I found her a day out of her egg!” she protested.

“Crystal…” At her name, she quickly swiveled around, deciding to block out any more harmful slandering of her Pokemon. Gale was peering at the ground. Water evaporated quickly from Jormungand’s Hydro Pump. She wasn’t sarcastic anymore.

“Gale?”

“I appreciate you sticking up for me and stuff…least that’s what it sounds like…but maybe you should listen to Blacky there. There’s something in those metallic eyes…something that would know what she’s talking about. Ha…Maybe I do have a long way to go.”

“Hey, don’t get down on yourself…”

“Who said I was?” she glanced over, her eyes slightly narrowed. She’s going back to normal, the gifted one decided. “I just want you to promise me that I’ll be able to gust her all the way to the northern ocean from the southern shore after we train some more.”

“Oh, of course. But best not be the ocean. She, uh…doesn’t like water too much.”

“All the more reason,” she clicked her beak eagerly.

“Gale…”

“C’mon, Mewster. Enough idle chitchat with Bird friend there. We gotta go and train and continue towards Noontide. You can catch up with her later,” Kiyo coldly commanded.

“Straight to the point, as always, Kiyo…” Kara sighed, eagerly shifting her weight from side to side.

“Well, she wanted a training partner, so I’m trying to train her! I’m not asking her to find a certain Pokemon for me for no good reason. I’m just giving her her…trade’s worth.”

“Hey, I asked for a companion to help keep Team Missile off my back and help in catching a substitute Pokemon till I got Breeze back, not for a slavedriver!” Crystal whined.

“Oh, but it’s all part of the package! I threw Kiyo’s Deluxe Training Mentoring for free! You should be grateful for all the training I put you through!” she chuckled, fixing her bag of bricks on her shoulders.

“I’m not.”

“You will be one day when you got eight badges, kid. …if you can get them all.”

“Whatever. Let’s continue on before the water totally dries and we’re burned to a crisp again.”

“Agreed,” Kara nodded, readjusting her pack casually over her shoulder once more. “Shall we?”

“To Poketopia, as the old fables said!” Kiyo beamed, before beginning to sing off key, “We’re off to see Rayquaza, Rayquaza of Poketopia!” All the two younger trainers could do was shake their heads and follow on with squishy footsteps.

Yeah, it was pretty fun to write.

BACK-To-BACK UPDAETZ? ZOMGZ.

Edit: ...this feels too short. Shoot, I may have left out some stuff. I'll edit later.

Chapter 24- Eleven

“What’s up? You seem tense,” the onyx-haired trainer called out as she unrolled her sleeping bag.

“Ah, just have some sort of weird deja-vu like feeling, that’s all. It’s probably nothing,” Crystal shrugged, gulping down her better judgment though hastily allowed Lt. Yena out for his nightly patrol. She paused as she was slipping her backpack off her shoulder as well as removing her utility belt and placing them at the head of her sleeping pack; the sleek, evolved form of the Poochyena almost made her think that the sergeant had abandoned her. He himself appeared to be attempting to get used to the change, pacing around left and right on graceful long legs.

“…you know, it’s funny. I don’t even quite remember becoming as such until I was released earlier today…” he muttered more to himself than to his trainer as he absently gazed around in an attempt to distinguish just how much he had actually grown.

“Deja-vu, eh? What, is your little Sergeant Pup all gone and you don’t like it?” Kiyo teased mockingly.

“Ah, well, it wasn’t the deja-vu, but I guess it is kinda weird seeing him so…big and stuff.”

“Intimidating?”

“A little.”

“That’s a Mightyena and its ability for ya…hahaha.” Stretching about, the fire trainer finally settled into her makeshift bed. Umbree was set as her night vigilante, as with so many other nights from the past. His crimson eyes gazed up at Crystal, as though…amused? “Well, at any rate, don’t lose any sleep over it. Evolution can be a little difficult to get used to, especially when the trainer’s used to Pokemon that are a fourth of their height.”

“I guess…Gale seems to have adapted fine to her new form, but I’m having a hard time seeing little Breeze under that mess of feathers…if it wasn’t for her sarcastic beak…” the gifted one frowned somewhat, glancing up to a stubborn dying oak. The Pidgeotto had easily situated herself upon a sturdy branch, abruptly pulled her head under her wing, and fallen fast to the unconscious realm upon one claw.

“Well, she must have had time to adapt. That, and she probably evolved when she was conscious. It’s a rare thing for Pokemon to evolve when unconscious. It’s probably harder on lil Lu’ there because he can’t remember a thing, right?”

“Yeah…” Granted, the idea of evolution got ‘Mewster’ thinking, which lead to her pondering the only other Pokemon she knew the evolved form of- Torchic. Gazing over to Kara, she saw that the brunette and her Combusken had set up camp silently on their own and were prepared to crash without so much of a ‘good night’ to their companions. “Hey, Kara?”

“Hmmm?” she rolled over lazily and somewhat irritably, obviously wishing for sleep to claim her rapidly.

“How did your Combusken take to evolution?”

“I dunno. She hopped around uncontrollably for a bit from her new legs, but other than that there isn’t much to report. Why?” she slurred.

“Ah, just wondering how Flare will take becoming a Combusken, that’s all.”

“Uh huh. Well, if you don’t have any more weird questions, I’m gonna fall asleep now. G’night.” With that, she grumpily turned over, facing away from the group, and fell silent.

“Mmmmm, it is sort of late,” Kiyo yawned. “Catch some sleep, and don’t let this whole evolution deal get to ya too much. You’ll learn to appreciate evolution later, I’m sure…”

“Alright…”

“Night.”

“Good night, Kiyo. Don’t let the Spinaraks bite.”

“Got it covered,” she countered, thumbing vaguely over to where Blaze had situated himself on the edge of her sleeping bag.

The scene faded to near quiescence. The only sounds that came from the area were that of the nocturnal predators hanging about and the gentle cracks from both the campfire and Blaze’s tail. Crystal turned to face the Mightyena whom had finally sat down. His sleek sable back was to her, and yet she knew he felt his trainer’s eyes upon him. He always knew.

“Hikara.”

“Yeah?”

“Are you…having a predicament falling asleep?”

“A little bit. Why?”

“…heh. It’s nothing much, I suppose…” the large canine paused. I wonder…what expression he’s wearing right now.

“Tell me anyways?”

“…I guess…I just wanted to say, thank you.”

“Hmm?”

“Well…somehow, and it was even I was taken down by the enemy…somehow you managed to help me reach one of my goals, to evolve. Here I was, thinking that it’d take until we had obtained our third badge, never mind the second, to get me to a high enough level to do so, and yet, here I sit in front of you proudly…and to myself. I have things I always thought were limited to my parental units- more black fur than gray, something of a…menacing snout, if one were to refer to it as such.” His words halted momentarily, as he rose up one of the large paws. She imagined deep red eyes gazing them over thoughtfully, in disbelief. “It still befuddles me greatly…hah. I suppose, what I’m getting at…” Finally, he tilted his head to the side, giving something of a wolfy smirk as his crimson eyes gleamed with one emotion he had yet to show to Crystal- kindness. “…I guess you mustn’t be a half-bad trainer to get me to part of my dream, Hikara.” At that, she couldn’t help but crack a large, stupid grin.

“Aw, Serge, er, Lieutenant…” Speedily she removed herself from the insolated bundles of her bed and threw her arms around him in a tight embrace. He staggered back, caught off guard by the gesture. “Haha, thank you! I know how much that means, coming from you, given you used to call me stuff like ‘trainer scum’ most of the time.”

“Ah, er, well, yes. It’s strictly on professional terms I say this, Hikara…” he muttered, averting his gaze sheepishly.

“Aw, don’t even try to say that, Mr. Biggintuff! You can’t fool me, you…!” Without stopping to think of possible consequences whilst caught in her giggle fit, she hastily brought her hand up to his smooth ivory head and ran her fingers through the soft hair. A low, dangerous growl emitted from the depths of his throat caused her to withdraw and gasp, alarmed and slightly frightened. “Huh?!”

The growl died, though the cold military personality was back. He averted his gaze from hers. “…My apologies. However, I ask you refrain from that. It makes me feel too much like a domestic pet for my liking,” he barked softly.

“Ah, yeah, uh, of course. Sorry, I just assumed, and I, uh, got carried away…”

“…hahaha. Some things never do change with you, do they? Well, I’m off to patrol the borders of the vicinity. You may rest easily knowing that.”

“…okay. Good night, Lieutenant Yena…” the blonde muttered near silently, before allowing herself to slink back to her makeshift mattress. Overwhelmed with thoughts of the day, such as finding Gale and her Mightyena admitting that she wasn’t too bad, sleep overcame her in a hurry and caused her eyelids to flutter with dreams.

“Hey, Crystal! Crystal! Wake up- we got a problem!” The sudden call from Kiyo caused the girl to nearly jump. Drowsily, she forced her eyes open, and tried to focus. Bright, warm sunlight poured down upon the scene, and it took her a moment to allow her aquamarine eyes to adjust in order to see the angered girl holding some sort of cloth bundle.

“Huh?”

“It’s Team Missile. Dammit, we have followers, and somehow they were able to sneak past our Pokemon.”

“What?!” At the sound of the team and getting so close to their base, her eyes daren’t droop another inch.

“Yeah! I was really ticked off myself! Get a load of this!” As though the bundle didn’t matter to her, the irate fire trainer chucked it at the gifted one. Catching it, though still shook up, she quickly noticed a letter poking through the folds. Curiously, she opened it and noted handwriting that didn’t belong to either Kara nor Kiyo. “There’s no way any of us wrote that, unless you really changed your handwriting over night and wanted to play a cruel joke on us!” Fingers thrust themselves frustratedly through short black hair; likewise, Kara paced a few feet before turning around, making a small rut in the ground.

“No…did you actually read what it said?”

“I was too furious to. It’s Missile stationary used for death threats to big people, that’s all I needed to see. That and it wasn’t in our handwriting. Why? What are the scumbags threatening this time? Death to me and Kara for our bad status with the team if you don’t turn yourself in?”

“No…not at…all…” Crystal trailed off, her mouth moving as she read the mysterious letter.

Crystal,

Even in the situation that I am in now, even with my high up position against my will, I do wish to fight for you. Always know that. So, with this letter comes a warning; Kinshayti is sick of her peon’s mess-ups, and as soon as you’re spotted in Noontide, she will come after you personally. I suggest you go into Noontide, win your battle against the gym leader as quickly as possible, and move out. You should be safe within Nagushi Cave for a while, as it’s a difficult terrain to move around in, as I’ve said before. After that, well…that’s all the advice I can offer for a while. I hope that I’ll be able to give you more information personally one of these days, but the chances are slim of such. I apologize, but I can’t draw too much attention to myself, otherwise they’ll punish me for treason.

I must keep this short, though there is so much I truly wish to say here that normally cannot be said. After you read this letter, have Flare burn it for you. I’m sorry to ask that of you, but as I said before, this was a very dangerous move on my part to even get close enough to deliver this letter and avoid any other Missile contacts. But know this; even though I wear the garb of your enemy, I will remain your ally, as much as possible. This goes for Kara and Kiyo as well. We have so much in common, you and I…and I hope one day, you’ll be able to vanquish Team Missile so that you could possibly realize as such.

Oh, and happy birthday. It is your birthday, right? That’s what it said on your records in the R&D file I snuck a peek at. Then again, these records could be wrong, so I have no idea. At any rate, I don’t need these. I figured you would enjoy them more. Don’t let Team Missile rob you of your happiness, even in the smallest things.

Your friend,

K

“Well, Miss-I-Was-Silent-For-A-Few-Minutes?” Kiyo hovered over to her impatiently.

“I have…I think we have an ally on Team Missile.”

“What? Lemme see that-” Without waiting for Crystal to hand it peacefully over, it was snatched from her hand. The mismatching eyes scanned back and forth rapidly, and somewhat of a frown was placed onto her face as she progressed. “…for a guy that has little time to write a letter, he sure wrote a lot. I have to wonder what essay this guy would write you if he had the chance, supposedly. I sense some sort of epic love story novel…”

“Do you have any idea who ‘K’ could be?”

“…nothing comes into mind, really. There are several K-named people that aren’t peons that could receive death for treason easily. Of course it can’t be Kinshayti, I know that much,” the Dustren scowled, the letter nearly crumbling under her mighty fist.

“Hey, lemme read that when you’re done,” Kara noted, gazing up from her trail momentarily.

“…hey wait. What’s the date?” Crystal pondered, finally realizing something from the letter.

“February fourth. Why? …waiiiit. What’s this, about it-”

“I can’t believe it slipped my mind,” the blonde noted. She plopped down from her kneeled stance.

“It’s my birthday today.”

“How in the legendaries’ name could you forget your own birthday?!” Kara exclaimed.

“You never so much as mentioned a peep of that to me,” Kiyo agreed.

“I…guess I got so caught up in travelling and training and all these crazy events that I forgot. …Wow, I’m…eleven.”

“Well, damn. We’re gonna have to do something special today then,” the fire trainer whistled.

“Let’s get a special dinner at Noontide when we arrive! On us, of course,” Kara eagerly grabbed Kiyo’s shoulder, shaking it lightly. The eldest appeared a bit more conservative about the thought, still clearly upset about the letter in the first place

“No,” Mewster immediately stated.

“No? The heck's wrong with you, not wanting to celebrate your own birthday?”

“It’s like K said in the letter; we should try and move through the city as soon as possible. If we hang around any more than is necessary…”

“Kinshayti can kiss my Pokemon’s flames in her face for all I care,” the eldest scoffed. “I’ve had several encounters with her before. I know what to do against her without worry. You need to relax and get all of this Team Missile stuff off the brain. Besides, this guy could just be a Missile that does want to hurt us and hurry into the cave so we can get caught in a trap or something.”

“I doubt that. It’s something…a feeling. He wouldn’t have written this letter, left it here, and then not bother to try to capture us. Besides, if he got past Umbree, he must not be all bad.”

“…touché, little one. Have you been studying psychology or something while I was off freeing Kara’s parents?”

“Thank you so much for that, still!” Kara’s free hand locked on Kiyo’s free shoulder, lightly shaking her in appreciation.

“Enough already!” she barked, pushing the hands off.

“Ah, no,” Crystal sheepishly grinned. “I guess I just try and relate to Pokemon’s sense of intuition about people, that’s all…”

“Still, something does smell a little fishy anyways. What was the present?”

“I’m checking.” Carefully, she unraveled the contents of the blanket to find several glittering booster packs. Her eyes widened, noting how they were from the tournament. “Boosters!”

“I want them! Come on, you already got a whole box of those things earlier from the tournament.”

“Exactly that! These are the prize boosters from the tournament!”

“And that matters how?” Kiyo waved her hand, as though inviting Crystal to explain further.

“Everyone in the tournament opened up their packs of cards right away, except for the under-cover Missile who called himself ‘Haku’. I think that guy was K. Does Haku ring a bell, Kiyo?”

“…vaguely, but I haven’t heard that name in a while, so I can’t associate it to any face right away. I’ll have to think about it.”

“Come on, Crystal, share the love!”

“Give the girl a break, it’s her birthday present, even if it is from a Missile.”

“Haku…K…” the youngest wondered, staring at the packs in her lap.

Still with that letter burned in her mind and burned literally, shortly after she opened up her card packs, the blonde found her mind endlessly adrift. At first, she merely wondered why she had forgotten her birthday, and why this guy wanted to help her out so much as to risk his life. However, the thought of her birthday and presents got her thinking, and she suddenly paused in her tiresome strides as they inched closer to Noontide.

“Mom!” she exclaimed. “She’ll be wanting to hear from me today, surely!”

“Oh, great. The parental unit. I suppose you’ll be wanting to borrow my gear so you can call her, given that this thing is a piece of-”

“Come on, Kiyo! Enough of stealing my Pokegear!” Crystal cut her off. Kiyo weakly held it out of her grabbing range teasingly.

“Hahaha, why? It’s so amusing to see your expression when I do it!” With a fake pout, she unclipped her device from her jacket and handed both the ‘gears over.

“Well, it’s not funny.”

“I think it’s only a little funny myself, Kiyo,” Kara chided.

“Meh, meh. You guys just don’t have any fun, do you!”

“Alright, I’m going to put it on speaker and get on the phone now…” Crystal hushed, glaring lightly at her traveling companions as though to say ‘now shut up or else’. The fine piece of technology unlatched its speaker device as well as the mouthpiece, and the tone rang. Without even waiting for the normal two rings, her mother rushed to pick up the phone, near panic and worry in her voice.

“Hello?!”

“Hi Ma…”

After that, the preteen forced herself away from the phone, ignoring all of the scolding she was receiving for not calling her for such a long time. Mismatched eyes rolled as the onyx-haired trainer smirked, and Kara pet Crystal’s shoulder sympathetically.

“…and have you any idea how much I’ve been worried sick about you? I heard the news that Team Missile was at Apollo Bridge, and in Zenith, and I knew you were headed straight through those areas, and I thought for sure-”

“I’m fine, Mom…”

“I realize that, but it’s so dangerous out there in the world, and you know how I worry about you!” At that, the pink-banged trainer heard a faint voice in the background.

“Hey, you never worried that much about me or Onii-chan when we were traveling!”

“Kira?!” Mewster exclaimed excitedly, and her comrades perked up at the sound of one of her siblings.

“Oh, yes. She came home for a vacation visit yesterday, and she was upset that you weren’t here. But, Crystal…”

“Is Onii-chan there too?!”

“No, he couldn’t make it. You know him- always busy, always late…” At that, the new trainer’s heart sunk. It had been nearly a year and a half since she had seen her eldest brother.

“Yeah, I guess…can I talk to Kira?”

“I’m not done yet!”

“I know, Mom…”

“What, I can’t even say happy birthday to my own child?”

“Hahaha, well, you were kinda rambling on about how you were worrying…”

“Well, I created you, so you should be happy about that much and call your mother more often!”

“Now we’re getting a little too detailed for my eavesdropping liking,” Kiyo noted, gazing slowly away, a soft blush forming on her cheeks. Kara, likewise, scratched the right side of her face with an awkward smile upon her face.

“Who’s that in the background? What did they say?”

“Ah, it was just Kiyo, and she was saying-” a hand quickly covered her mouth as the mentor hushed up the student, aiming her voice at the mouthpiece.

“I was just saying how I looked forward to your hospitality when we visited there next, Mrs. Hikara!” she lied between her teeth, forcing a fake smile, as though Crystal’s mother would see that as well.

“Oh…hello, Kiyo,” the voice responded uncertainly, though, as her daughter predicted, she acted kindly back. “How’s the journey been treating you and Crystal?”

“Ah, fine. Little hinge here and there, but for the most part we’re unharmed.”

“Well, that’s good to hear, at any rate. Could I talk to my daughter again?”

“I’m right here, Mom…” the blonde glared up as she finally pried the black-haired trainer’s hand off her jaw to hastily speak.

“Okay. I’m going to need you to tell me where you are in the area so I can send Kira out there with your presents. I’ll let you talk to her now, alright?”

“Okay!” There was a pause, and the sound of rustling as the phone was passed along.

“Hello!” Her high-pitched voice was of true sugar. Crystal nearly forgot how sweet it actually was.

“Kira! It’s been so long since I’ve heard your voice!”

“I know! I’m sorry, it’s just been utter chaos up at the High Council. A batch of four trainers came through recently, and I nearly thought I wouldn’t be able to make it home. I’m just sorta said that Onii-chan and you aren’t here for your birthday or Wizar’s.”

“I know, but trust me, if I told you half of the adventure I was on right now, it’d be mind-boggling. Be sure to say ‘happy birthday’ for Wiz’ tomorrow, too!”

“Sure, but…well, maybe you can fill me in when I get there. Where are you at?”

“Uh, well, to be honest, could you hold off on the presents for a bit?”

“Huh? Why?”

“Well, uh, we’re…we’re about to do a heavy training regimen, my companions and I, and then I was going to battle the third gym leader and bust through Nagushi Cave as fast as we can,” Crystal sighed. She never liked lying, even if some of it was the truth. She did not want to stick around in Nagushi Cave, after hearing so many horror stories come true from Kiyo and Kara. And she didn’t want to stick around in Noontide for too long either.

“Oh, so you’re near Noontide? I could just run and deliver it and stuff-”

“Are you on speaker, Kira?” the youngest Hikara interjected rapidly.

“No, why?”

“Please don’t tell Ma or anyone else this? Just between us?”

“Last time you said that, it was something pretty-”

“I understand that. Please, I don’t want them worrying. Please?”

“…I guess.”

“Okay. The reason why I really can’t have you deliver the presents?”

“Yes?”

“Team Missile is after me. An admin is going to be tailing me herself if I let myself get seen around Noontide and stick around for too long, and if you were to come, you’d draw a lot of attention, and you might get thrown in the middle of it, and I really don’t want that to happen.” There was a long pause, and some babbling from Cyranea in the background.

“I’m fine, Mum…” Kira’s voice was muffled, and the gifted one knew that couldn’t be good. Kira always looked hale and hearty. “Okay, I understand. Just let me know soon when you’re ready to get them, yeah?”

“Yeah. I’ll probably contact you on the way to…” At that, the new trainer paused, turning to Kiyo. “What’s after Nagushi Cave?”

“Twilitsong, remember? Where you caught Dragola.”

“Ah, yeah. Twilitsong…” Saying the name resurfaced semi-old memories that seemed to be from ages ago. Crystal could remember being trapped so clearly in that cage, so helpless without her Pokemon, then falling into the lake to later be helped by the one that made her substitute starter. It brought chills up her spine at the thought.

“You’d better call. You have my Pokegear number, right?”

“Uh, funny long story behind that actually!” she chuckled nervously, but in her shame Kiyo snatched her Pokegear. “Hey, Kiyo! Come on! I was talking!”

“Kiyo?” Kira pondered curiously, as though having heard the name before.

“Yo,” the fire trainer coolly responded, shoving her spare hand into her pocket.

“So, you’re the infamous Kiyo Dustren that went missing for a few years and took Kanto and Johto by storm like your brothers?”

“This is she. And you’re Kira Hikara, the leader of the Beghta Region’s Pokemon League, fourth trainer of the High Council, sister to both Mewster and Ryouo?”

“You’ve pried a lot outta my baby sister, haven’t you?”

“Kira, I can hear you!” Crystal retorted at the name ‘baby’.

“Well, it’s true!”

“Anyways, Kira…mind throwing your number at me so I can put it into my Gear instead? Crystal’s gear is fried.”

“Aw, what happened?”

“Water damage, we think. I have not the faintest.”

“Weird. Silph ware doesn’t typically break like that. Well, in that case, alright. I’ll keep yours too, if an emergency comes up.”

“Sweet.”

“What is it?” After being asked, the fire trainer swiftly gave out the code, and likewise the Hikara sibling followed suit. “Okay, I’ve added you.”

“I’ll add you when I get off.”

“Hey, and um, Kiyo…?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t let them get her, you hear?”

“Ha, wouldn’t dream of letting Team Missile get what they want, ever.”

“Good, because I would have to seriously hurt you if you let harm come to my sister.”

“Hahaha, let’s hope you never have to take up that promise, then! I don’t think I’m that good to fend off an older Hikara member…”

“Kiyo…” the younger sweated, insulted.

“You’re just starting out, Crystal. You couldn’t beat Kiyo for a long time, even if she was going easy on you. Trust me when I say that.” Kira’s comment threw the blonde for a loop.

“Huh?”

“Well, I shan’t eat up any more of your minutes! Hang tough, and good luck with getting your third badge soon!

“Oh, of course! Hope to see you soon, Kira! Say ‘hi’ to Wizar and Machoke and Worki and Asa and Freefall and all your Pokemon for me!”

“Will do! Say ‘hi’ to Breeze for me!”

“She actually evolved. She’s Gale now,” the preteen beamed.

“Wow! That’s cool! I’ll definitely want to see her then. Anyways, gotta run! Later!”

“Bye! Oh, and if you hear from Onii-chan…” However, there was a distinctive ‘click’ on the phone, and it immediately began to retract the speaker set. Crystal heaved a heavy breath as she handed the device over to its owner.

“Asa? Freefall?”

“Her Aereon. She’s such a sweet but timid fluffy friend. I’ve known her since she was hatched. And Freefall’s her Pidgeot-”

“An Aereon?” Kara interrogated. “I’ve never heard of one.”

“I’ve only seen one, myself. How’d she get her hands on the Cloud Stone needed to evolve it?”

“Good question. I never really bothered to ask, but she probably could have gotten it from Dad, more than likely…”

“Well, let’s not waste any more time. Let’s clear out to Noontide and see if we can’t take out the gym leader, Breaker.”

“Breaker?”

“Yeah, that’s his nickname, evidently. Supposedly he likes Pokemon that can freely break rocks or something of the like, hence the weird name. Or it could be for other purposes. I heard he was in a band too, with my brother Kaien. Of course, Kai went to who-knows-where for training or something, so I think the band has been on hiatus since.”

“Band?”

“Yeah. Chaos Overdrive, I think it was?”

“Their symbol is Kadabra’s star with a Confusion aura around it. Shoot, that’s where I heard your brother’s name from,” Kara almost automatically stated. At this, the eldest rose up an eyebrow.

“Like the band, do we?”

“Yeah, I have a lot of their songs on my music player,” she sheepishly beamed.

“Uh huh. Well, don’t get too caught off of asking the guy for his autograph when you beat him and stuff, yeah? I heard from my brother he’s a bit of a jerk.”

“I don’t care what you say. Anyone that can play the guitar like that is gold in my books.”

“Guys, can we just concentrate on getting there and getting out and not arguing about tastes in music?” Crystal apathetically and dryly gazed at them.

“Aren’t we pushy today, Ms. Eleven?”

“Sorry, but I don’t feel like meeting Kinshayti ever again. From a Missile or not, I’m taking that letter seriously, and I just want to get as far away from Nagushi as quickly as possible.”

“Touchy…” Kiyo muttered, rolling her eyes. “Well, let’s do what the little princess wants. After all, it is her birthday…”

“Ha, ha, ha. Hilarious.”

“I think you’ve been hanging around Kiyo for too long. You’re starting to get reaaaaaally sarcastic, Crystal…” the brunette warned.

“No, I’m just upset right now that I can’t enjoy my birthday because of Kinshayti or the gym leader and I can’t even get my presents.”

“Uh huh. Well, I guess I’d be bitter about that myself, so I won’t say anything. Let’s go- the city’s over this hill.”

“Breaker, if you lose again, I swear to the legendaries you aren’t getting a single song out of me for a long time!” A boisterous voice called from the audience as Crystal stepped up to the trainer’s square. With butterflies in her stomach anticipating the match against the gym leader, she tried to discern what the best strategy would be against him given the mental notes she took during Kara’s match. Slowly, she watched the fluffy crimson red haired trainer yell something indiscernible to the rowdy crowd and come up to his battling station. His contacts unnerved the female greatly- one was demonic red, the other completely white except for his pupil.

“Well, isn’t this amusing…Crystal Hikara, yeah?” he noted in a tenor voice.

“Huh? How’d you know my-”

“Oh, come on. If Team Missile’s after you and they want you so badly for whatever, other trainers are definitely going to learn your name quickly. I gotta say, I wasn’t expecting a battle so soon against you. This should be fun.”

“Uh, sure…”

“Let’s get the music playing. Three Pokemon each, single battle, no time limit. Fine by you?”

“Yeah…”

“Alright then. Hit it, Rhyhorn!” Chucking out the red and white orb, Breaker reached behind his back and pulled out his electric guitar. Fan girls screamed wildly, but Crystal knew all the better what this meant for her. He wasn’t taking any chances, according to the last battle Kara shared with him.

“Well, two can play at that game…” she muttered, her hand automatically finding itself on her grass-type’s Pokeball. “Alright, Flora! Let’s see your moves!” Holding out the sphere, the little weed popped out, and Breaker frowned.

“What be rappin’, mah Homey-C?”

“We’re getting our third badge, and this time, it’s all yours,” Crystal responded shortly in the different language.

“What, and you be all open about throwin’ da lingo ‘round dese foos?”

“If I can’t understand what orders he’s using, I’m not giving him an advantage on letting him here mine.”

“Shizzle. He be usin’ dat crazy rock tool for battle?”

“Yeah.”

“I have to ask Crystal…just what are you doing?” Breaker’s comment caught the female off guard.

“Hmm? Oh, I was, ah, just talking to my Pokemon, that’s all.”

“Well, you have a different way of doing it, I’ll say…” he shook his head, nodding towards the referee.

“Round one! Flora versus Rhyhorn! Begin!”

As soon as the words were thrown, Breaker’s fingers slid into action, fretting along the guitar neck madly. The sound echoed on the speakers throughout the stadium, though the noise was semi-washed out by the cheers. Likewise, the Rhyhorn began to move forward, charging towards the Oddish.

“Flora, as soon as it comes close, Absorb!”

“Shizzle!” she cried, and stood her ground. As soon as the rock creature was near enough, though, the guitar screamed high notes, causing Crystal to grasp ahold of her ears. Rhyhorn viciously whipped his head to the side, and sparks began to glow near the back of his throat.

“Flamethrower! Watch out for it, Flora!” However, Crystal couldn’t even hear her own words over the musical instrument and the cheers, so she merely hoped that the grass Pokemon could. Indeed, it seemed as such; using her nimble feet and her leaves, she brushed them up against the ramming Pokemon. Green energy flew from the opponent to the weed rapidly, and soon the flames died out along with their Pokemon. The strumming paused for a moment as the gym leader stared down at his defeated ground type.

“…shoot. Rhyhorn, come back.” Gritting his teeth, he quickly removed his next Pokeball and chucked it out. The light formed the figure of what appeared to be…

“What is that?” Crystal interrogated in English, gazing at the brown and red creature.

“I didn’t use it last match against your friend- there was no need to, really. However, I’m surprised you don’t know what a Baltoy looks like, especially since your brother has a Claydol, right?”

“Oh, that’s a Baltoy? I never got to see it- he evolved it early on before I even got to see it.” However, Crystal’s mind was racing, trying to remember what she could about Kronos. Shoot, shoot, what type was he, what type was he…? I’m figuring ground, but wasn’t there…oh!

“…Can I switch?”

“Make it fast,” he nodded.

“Alright, Flora, nice job. I’ll hold onto you for a bit until I need you again, okay? This thing could be nasty.”

“Fine by me, Homey-C, but you just go an’ let me know if you want me to go all up in dis top’s grill, aight?”

“Sure,” she nodded, hoping she understood the basic gist of what she was saying as she recalled her. Placing the capsule back onto her belt, she slowly unlatched another, hoping she was in the green. “Alright, front and center, Lieutenant Yena!” The proud Mightyena soon made his appearance to many cheers.

“Awaiting orders, Hikara.”

“10-4.”

“What, communicating so openly in public?” Crimson eyes darted back uncertainly.

“This guy’s using a guitar to order his Pokemon, so I can’t understand what he’s saying. Might as well make the playing field even…”

“Affirmative. I’ll keep a sharp ear out for your commands.”

“Round two! Lieutenant Yena versus Baltoy! Begin!”

“Alright, see if a Bite doesn’t work!” As a response to her order, the music began to give Crystal the image of circles. Similarly, the top began spinning around, casting mud around everywhere, including into the dark-type’s eyes. He painfully wiped at them, hissing foul things the opponent’s way. “Come on! Go! It’s to the right of you!” the gifted one screeched.

“I can’t see a blasted thing…!”

“Trust me! To your right! Right!” Trying to peek an eye open, the wolf soon turned to the right and launched forward with jaws at the ready. However, nothing but air greeted his teeth as the creature veered out of the way and slammed into Lt. Yena whilst spinning.

“The music’s disrupting me! I can’t hear the stupid thing!” he growled painfully.

“Keep at it! It’s to your left now!” Again, a failed strike. “This isn’t working…”

“I realize that, Hikara!”

The girl was forced to think as she watched her poor Pokemon get more dirt and muck in his eyes, not to mention continuously spinning around and around the Mightyena. Using vision isn’t going to do anything here…wait, that’s…

“Lieutenant, use Odor Sleuth to lock onto the Baltoy’s scent and use that to guide your Bite attack!” Surprised by the order, the dark type cautiously twitched his nose, attempting not to breathe in dust. He stood still for a moment, before lashing out to his side and taking the ground-psychic type into his jaws. The spinning stopped, and he somewhat annoyedly threw the fainted top onto the ground. A larger frown found itself on Breaker’s face as he withdrew it without a word.

“Breaker! What are you doing! Come on! You big Meowth!” the same female bellowed from the stands.

“Working on it, Brooke!” he angrily called back, and at the sound of the female’s name, several femmes in the stadium sobbed hysterically. Completely ignoring it, he tossed out his last Pokeball, and Crystal gulped. However, much to her delight, it wasn’t the Pikachu he used to amplify his music even more with, but a greenish-winged, yellow bug-looking Pokemon. Of course, the gym leader seemed fairly confident in himself. “Time to take the music to a new level. I have yet to lose a match using Swiftstream.”

“Allowed to switch?”

“Be my guest.”

“Lieutenant Yena, you’re off duty until further notice, yeah?”

“10-4, Hikara.”

“Alright then…” Vibrava…I remember Kira telling me that it was part dragon type. Without a second thought, she held out the Onyx Pokeball facing the field. “Dragola!” At that, Breaker didn’t wait for her or the referee, but started plucking at the thickest string repeatedly, but switching back and forth between the same note at two different octaves. Cheers flew around the area madly, and Crystal could nearly hear Kara screaming as well. Dragola appeared, though was highly confused by all the noise, and turned to her trainer questioningly. Covering her own ears, the blonde couldn’t even issue her command as chords began to play.

“Round three-!” was all that could be heard from the MC, and at that, the Vibrava closed his eyes as the guitar paused for four beats. However, the instrument began to create music once again. It screamed out several notes intensely. Swiftstream flew into the sky, buzzing around rampantly and aiming what seemed to be blue and gold flames at the blue serpent.

“DRAGOLA! EVADE THAT ATTACK!” the challenger hoarsely screamed over the music, and using Extremespeed, she vanished from where the attack would have landed. Upset at this, the gym leader frowned, but quickly reached up to his shirt for a moment where there was a loud clicking sound. The music continued right after that, but joining along were lyrics sung gracefully by Breaker:

“When you look you see right through me, cut the rope and fell to my knees, born and broken every single time…”

Now it was near impossible for Crystal to order her Pokemon, given his voice overpowered her own as well as his rock.

“DRAGOLA!” she attempted, but she could not amplify her words enough. Her little Dratini simply kept up with the commands to dodge the attack.

“Always keep me under finger, that’s the spot where you went to me, but I see some type of pleasure in my mind…”

Sweating, she wondered just what she could do to counteract all of the noise. Desperately, she glared up into the audience to where Kiyo was sitting. Of course, the female had her own hands over her ears, yet was watching the match intently. Mismatching metallic eyes caught ahold of blue ones, but they darted to the little dragon. She took her hand off her ear for one second, merely twirling her finger around a few times.

“…Twister?” Crystal pondered lightly. It was the only thing the fire trainer could have meant by that.

“Yeahhh, here comes the water, it comes to wash away the sins of you and I, this time you’ll seeeee…”

Several voices joined into the chorus, and the Vibrava flew in dangerously close to Dragola. Seeing how she could only sign things out now, Crystal waved her arms like mad to her Pokemon, feeling like a doofus as she did so. However, the plan worked, and her dragon gazed back at her for a split second. That was all the challenger needed- she made a circular pattern with her finger, and Dragola knew immediately what to do. Breaker hadn’t seen it, thankfully, and thus was unprepared as rocks and debris floated around rampantly. The air collided roughly with Swiftstream, sending him flying back. The gym leader snarled his lyrics quicker, getting to the second chorus as rapidly as possible.

“Yeaaaaah, here comes the water, it comes to wash away the sins of you and I, this time you’ll seeeeee, like holy water, it only burns you faster than you’d ever dry this time with meeeeee…”

The music quieted for a moment, and Crystal took the opportunity as best she could to command her Pokemon.

“Twister! Keep up with it and then finish it with Extremespeed…!”

That was all she could afford as the music picked up into the guitar solo. Now he and his Pokemon meant business. The evolution of Trapinch fluttered out of the first windstorm, eyes narrowed as it let out a high pitched Screech, causing poor Dragola to withdraw from her attack. Dangerous teeth showed themselves in an attempt to latch onto the Dratini, but she was again too quick for the Crunch attack and wrapped her body around the Vibrava tightly as she whipped up another cyclone. The creature screeched to the sound of the music terribly, and many spectators were forced to clamp their ears. Breaker merely tried to sing louder, as though to comfort his Pokemon:

“When you look you see right through me, cut the rope and fell to my knees! Born and blooded every single…TIIIIIIIIIIIIIME! Yeaaaaaaaah, here comes the water, it comes to wash away the sins of you and I, this time you’ll seeeee…”

Swiftstream finally unraveled himself from the Wrap attack, and allowed the Dratini to land roughly onto the ground. Flames began to show at the tip of his mandible, but Dragola was ready and disappeared.

“Like holy water, it only burns you faster than you’d ever dry, this time with meeeeeeeeee…”

The serpentine reappeared above the scene, floating mystically for a moment, before shooting down at Extremespeed at the bug. Breaker could only finish up his song abruptly as there was a mighty crash into the earth. Silence fell, except for the ringing in Crystal’s ears.

The dust cleared, showing rock shrapnel everywhere on the two competitors and burn marks on Dragola.

“Both Pokemon are unable to battle! Because challenger Crystal has two Pokemon in reserve, the battle goes to challenger Crystal Hikara!”

Cheers and wails emitted from the crowd, and the blonde sighed thankfully. Breaker appeared upset, as well, throwing his instrument onto his back once more and recalling the Pokemon from the mess, just as his opponent did.

“Well, I’m in a world of trouble after this, I tell you that much…” the gym leader paced over, switching off his microphone and thumbing behind him where there was a very upset Brooke flailing her arms around wildly.

“Is she your girlfriend or something?”

“My band’s lyricist,” he stated firmly, grumbling. “I’ve been writing songs for a while, but there’s not much me and my band can do without our bassist.”

“Is that Kaien?” At that, he seemed surprised.

“You know about J-Man?”

“I’m traveling with his sister, Kiyo?” At that, he nodded.

“Ah, well, tell Kiyo to get in touch with that little-” she winced at the demeaning profanities he used. “Totally got us into a heap of trouble when he left! Granted, I’d still have the gym to run, but I’m getting the urge to go on tour of the Johto Region. Oh, and uh…” he quickly reached into his hole-filled blue-jeans pocket and pulled out a brown badge with five precious stones engraved in it, as well as what appeared to be a compact flashlight. “The Gem Badge, and Flash gear. You’ll need both to get through Nagushi Cave. Good match.”

“Thanks…but I have a quick question?”

“Yeah?”

“What’s your normal eye color?”

“My normal…oh, the contacts.” Without a second hesitation, he lightly pushed one of the creepy contacts to the side to reveal a colorful rainbow hazel in his iris. “Hazel.”

“Why do you wear the contacts?”

“To intimidate the opponent for a bit. All in the battle strategy.”

“Yeah, well…” Crystal muttered something, though she waved to Kara and Kiyo rapidly. “I didn’t think that was quite fair, not to be able to get my orders out because of all your music. I think you should save it for the stage. I have to go now.”

“Sure, but all’s fair when it comes to the gym leader’s rules of the battle. Remember that.”

“I wi-” her words failed her as she caught sight of a familiar foe in the crowd. He smirked, and muttered something into what appeared to be a walkie-talkie. She could clearly lip-read what he said.

“Ms. Kinshayti? She’s done with her battle. She’s headed towards the west to Nagushi Cave.”

“I have to go!” Crystal suddenly lost her breath, and turned tail without a second word to the leader. He pondered something, confused, before he gazed up to the crowd. Chris Johnson was no longer there.

Sticking the TCG in is really cool, IMO, but shouldn't Crystal be in the Junior division?

It feels like there's something missing b/w 22 and 23. What happened to them getting out of the con?

Charmander Rox: Well, glutton up while you can, 'cause I'll prolly be off playing my DS and my new Diamond version for a VERY long time. HAHAHAHA.

Luc EX: Probably, but at this point a) I really don't care, b) not important to the story c) I wanted her to be in the same divish as Dylan. That, and she turns eleven next chapter- isn't it 11-15 for seniors?

bullados: I think it vaguely hints that Crystal and Kara get out the back, and Kiyo, being the nab she is, goes out the front, and then gets surrounded by a harem of Team Missile Peons. Probably calls out Jormy, he's hungry, smells food on a grunt... Yeah, doesn't end well. And then they leave. Course, the chapter was getting long as it was, and I thought it'd be fun to leave it open for readers to think about. Maybe I left it too open.

Anyways, what, what?! OH SANAP FOLKS! NOW WE GET SUMZ GEWD STUFFZORZ! New secrets are unvealed! Kiyo versus Kinshayti! And a new person joins the crew, but is he friend or foe?!

You'll only find out by reading the newest chapter of Rose Quartz and Onyx, 'Weakness'!

*shot multiple times for corny overload*

Chapter 25- Weakness

“Man, I don’t like these woods. At all.” Crystal, now the proud owner of her third badge, eyed the woods even darker than the Eclipse Woods. For safety purposes, she kept Lieutenant Yena by her side. She had heard that there were ghosts on Route 54. Kiyo had Umbree out, who stayed close to his trainer’s side, similar to how Zaika did to Kara’s. It was far too quiet for all of their likings, even the bold Kiyo.

“Yeah, they’re giving me the creeps. Can’t we just make a mad dash towards Nagushi Cave and climb over it or something?” Kara whined.

“Sadly, no. Team Missile would probably think of that strategy and intercept us, and based on what little miss ‘I swear I saw a Missile at the gym’ says, they’re probably expecting us.” The fire trainer darted her mismatching eyes around often.

“Aren’t you the least bit freaked out, Kiyo?” Crystal sobbed.

“No, why would I be…OH MY GODS.” Her voice suddenly darkened, and the trainer of eleven froze.

“What? What’re talking ab- oh no!” Kara squealed.

“What? What? What?!” the young trainer peeped.

“It’s just…a…a big Gengar is behind you, and I think he likes you.”

“Oh no. Lieutenant Yena, get him away!” Crystal cringed up, but the Mightyena froze up as well, backing away slowly.

“Err, Hikara, I know it’s in my duty to obey commands, but, uh, yeah. I don’t think I’ll obey this one,” he growled with a fearful uncertainty.

“Just make it go away, please, any of you!”

“Don’t listen to them, Crystal,” Umbree called. “They’re playing a terrible joke on you.”

“Eh?” Slowly, she glanced out of the corner of her eyes, and pivoted around. She nearly fainted as a giant Gengar doll was dropped into her face, compliments of Kiyo, but she did certainly fall flat down onto the ground. Heavy laughter erupted from the scene as the furious Crystal rose to her feet. “THAT WAS NOT FUNNY, YOU-” The remainder of her sentence was rather colorful with the terms she chose. Of course, once again, the roars of hilarity sort of died off into the woods, as though they had heard laughter outside of their merry group. Dark laughter.

They began whispering to each other, fearful. Even Kiyo seemed to turn whiter than normal. Suddenly, though, both the fire trainer and the medic were paralyzed in fear as they gazed slightly above Crystal’s shoulders. Umbree didn’t seem startled so much as annoyed, red eyes merely narrowing a little. Lieutenant Yena growled a considerable bit. Confused and feeling the hairs at the back of her neck bristle, she slowly turned. Nothing there. “…Come on guys, this is not funny.” She turned back, and they were sheet white, and completely mute. “What’s wrong? Caught in your joke again?”

“C-Crystal…” Kiyo warned, voice barely audible.

“Nope, not listening to what you have to say unless it’s real and an apology.”

“Fine, we’re sorry, now will you get the heck out of there?!” the two teens shouted.

“Why? I’m not afraid of your little doll.”

They slowly gazed at one another, before shaking hands rose the doll in their hands. After feeling an icy breath at her back, the girl slowly circled around. A Gengar sat there, with his garnet eyes and mischievous grin. He laid upon his side, as though lounging.

“Boo.”

“AIEEEEYAAAAAHHH!” Crystal screeched wildly, and flew off, leaving her friends to take on an amazing goose chase. Whereas the humans ran for their lives, Umbree paused, eyeing the Gengar.

“Why’d you have to go and do that, now?” the Pokemon’s voice changed, though barely noticeable.

“Eh, I have to have some fun. Ya have to give me that much credit, Umbree…or should I say…master?” The Gengar’s smile suddenly changed, appearing more serious, or more friendly, though difficult to determine which of the two it was. “…you should catch up with them. I sense trouble for your master.”

“Kiyo knows, I think, that she cannot be the master, but the friend of me…as you are to me,” Umbree gave a chuckle. “It’s nice to see you again, Akuba…”

“Eh, this probably won’t be the last of me, you know that.” He gave a mischievous grin. “The time is coming, though. I’ll be waiting.”

“Thank you, again, Akuba. You’ve always done so much for me. Just, next time take it easier on the girls, especially the one whom is able to understand us, Crystal. Ghosts seem to really freak her out, you know.”

“Yeah, yeah, consider it done. Just gimme the signal, and I’ll help out in the situation if need be,” he shrugged, before spinning around. “Later…friend.” And, with that, the ghost-poison type faded from the living plane of existence. The dark Pokemon stood for a moment more, before another screech drove him to take off after the sound.

Heart pounding in her throat, all cold, sharp air not making it to her lungs, Crystal had finally come to a stop with her friend and Pokemon now by her side near a small pond. Her pupils were nearly a dark blue speck amongst the terror-struck electrified blue irises. To accompany her heavy pants, she was dripping with heavy sweat, and was shaking all over. All she could do was cough and try and catch her breath as she stood there, doubled over in near complete paralysis. Of course, Kiyo was rather frightened and tuckered out, as well, though her breaths weren’t quite so labored as the gifted one’s.

“What…a mar-athon. You…really can run. By all of the…legendaries Mewster, don’t do that…ah, where’s Umbree and Kara?” the fire trainer then sharply turned around at the pond’s edge, becoming less exhausted and more worried. “Hope…hope he didn’t try and take on that Gengar…and Kara didn’t get lost trying to follow us…oh, here he…comes. Good.” And, bounding along, there was said moonlight Pokemon. “Where’d you get off to, anyways…? Did you see Kara…?”

“Hikara, I definitely think we should get moving again soon. Clearly these woods aren’t healthy for your body,” the Mightyena nudged his trainer, but she still couldn’t say anything. A feeling of asthma overcame her. It hurt terribly bad to breathe. So, this is what it is to be scared out of your mind... She couldn’t focus on anything.

Bubbles fizzed up on the surface of the mist-covered pond. Something about that made her want to look away instantly, but…she couldn’t move. “Hikara?” Even as her wonderful companion from the early Eclipse Woods nudged up against her, worried, she still couldn’t respond. However, Crystal’s paralysis didn’t go unnoticed, as her friend came to her side. It was a good thing that she did.

Without warning, within the very edge of the pond, water materialized from Acid Armor into a thick cobalt hide of waterproof skin and scales. Vicious teeth without a conscious reached out to grasp ahold of the precious and tasty gifted one, and slowly devour her in the realms of the dark waters. However, even as the finned one rose, Umbree was all too ready, and with amazing reflexes, he wasted no time in glowing with dark, sucking power before nailing the creature. Kiyo, likewise, pushed Crystal further back, spewing some profanity from her mouth. The water type bounced off the attack, and then landed at the water’s edge, growling maliciously. However, it wasn’t the nasty Vaporeon that caught Umbree’s, the trainer’s Pokemon, or the trainer’s eyes- it was the Vaporeon’s trainer.

“Kinshayti…” Kiyo whispered with nothing less than murder in her voice as she broke away from the protective embrace on Crystal. The blonde couldn’t respond, though- her sickening last visit with the Missile Admin, both from her dream and her imprisonment, replayed wildly over in her mind. Just the presence of her made the poor girl feel undeniably trapped.

“Ah, the infamous Kiyo Dustren and talented Crystal Hikara. Pity we have to be meeting like this, what with you alive and you not in a cage, respectfully,” she coolly whispered, and the little girl twinged. “Pity that your traitor friend isn’t here-”

“Go the-” Of course, the rest of Kiyo’s sentence was rather harsh and anything but friendly. The weak trainer with her Mightyena didn’t even flinch at the profanities. She had every right to call her those names.

“Oh, come on. I’m not even here for your two friends today. All I want, Dustren, is your head! Danté, obliterate them!”

The Missile Admin coldly whipped out a Pokeball, black with an upside-down yellow U upon it, and tossed it out onto the field. Soon, a giant pillar of olive green loomed above them, grinning from the opposite end of the lake. The rock-dark type with pitch black eyes gave an evil sort of laugh, waiting for any movement on the other side of the field before jumping into the fray.

“Arcanum, come give Umbree a hand!” The temperature in Kiyo’s voice sunk into the negatives as she threw out the Great Ball. The Arcanine stood tall, suddenly taking a serious growl. “Crystal, get out of here.”

“Huh? But, Kiyo…” Even as she spoke, Lt. Yena shrunk back under the gaze of the powerful Tyranitar, somewhat like his trainer, and retreated into his Pokeball.

“This is an old score to settle. GO!” she shouted, and threw one arm back telling the pink-banged one to leave, while the other hand pointed outward. “Arcanum, use an Extremespeed on the lake to cause a wave to crash onto the Tyranitar! Umbree, Psychic on the Vaporeon!”

“Danté, use that wave to your advantage. Maelstra, try and freeze that pesky Umbreon to death. He’s been alive for far too long.”

Umbree suddenly growled harshly at that comment, and proceeded to up his attack so as to throw the Vaporeon into a tree near Kinshayti. Arcanum, in the mean time, had faded away from existence, reappeared for a split second in the middle of the pond, and then returned to the other side. The shock wave of the speed caused a large wave to erupt, and it flew over to the Tyranitar. However, the beast grinned, and jumped into the water. In addition to the wave being cancelled out, an even larger wave came nearer to Kiyo’s side of the field.

“What?!” Kiyo appeared shocked as the mountain eater cackled, riding the large surf. Crystal’s eyes widened as much as the teenager’s, and she saw the massive wave coming over her. She winced, knowing the impact would be fierce…

But then, nothing came except a wave of coldness. Slightly opening an eye, shivering, she was shocked to see wave after wave passing her by…no, passing through her! She gasped as she saw the Umbreon fighting the wave and Arcanum pushing Kiyo to safety, only to bear the blunt force of the attack. The Armor Pokemon landed gently onto the ground by the fire trainer, but the Vaporeon was nowhere in sight. Kiyo coughed, inhaling some water, and quickly taking in the scene.

“Arcanum, return!” She hurriedly recalled the poor Arcanine as soon as she saw it, and it was a good thing too- if she hadn’t, that Tyranitar would’ve succeeded in Crunching her neck. She gave another few coughs. “Umbree?” The dark type easily got to his feet, shaking spare water off his glowing coat angrily. The onyx-haired trainer then spun around a few times, her eyes passing over Crystal. “Crystal? Crystal, where are you?”

“What are you doing? I’m right here!” she waved at Kiyo, but she still seemed worriedly oblivious.

“Looks like your friend was dragged under. Really such a pity…I guess I’ll just have Maelstra drag her out for transporting later,” Kinshayti yawned.

“Grr…Jolteon, help me out here! Flareon, dash off and see if you can find Crystal in the woods!” She then pulled out two Pokeballs, and the respective team dashed out to perform their duties. The Flareon ran right passed her.

“Kiyo, I’m right here! Why can’t you hear me?”

“Because you’re technically not on her plane of existence~,” the chilling voice she had heard a few times before made her freeze. Eyes slowly made contact with the red eyes she had seen a minute before. The Gengar from before was standing there, mischievously grinning, and automatically the girl screamed at the top her lungs.

“Hehehehe…Oh come now, is that how you greet your savoir?” he continued. She saw that he had a purple hand upon her, which made her even paler.

“Wh-what d-did you d-do to m-me?” she stuttered.

“Meh, I just transparentized you to get you outta the way of that Surf attack. It’s not like you’re a ghost now or anything…” He then turned to the battle, seriously watching on, as Crystal nearly fainted from suspicion that she was a ghost. “…it was a good thing that she recalled Arcanum when she did, though, otherwise she’d have wound up dead.” Crystal, still shaking, turned to the battle. Kiyo still gazed around, muttering to herself, wondering where the transparent one had gone too.

“L-let me g-go! I need to l-let her know I’m f-fine…”

“Unfortunately, I have orders against that,” the Gengar shrugged. She then gulped, and tried hard to push his hand off her shoulder, figuring contact was what kept her in this limbo. However, her arm passed right through, and he grinned. “Come on, give a ghost type some credit, eh? Hehehe!” She stifled tears, as she returned to the battle. However, fear of being trapped in an ethereal form forever was turned into fear and panic for the preoccupied trainer. She saw some of the water moving about, drawing nearer and nearer still. She squinted, making out a fin that belonged to the Vaporeon whom was sneaking along in the puddles, edging closer and closer still to Kiyo.

“Kiyo!” the young trainer attempted to Kiyo on the shoulder to let her know of the approaching Maelstra, but her hand wafted right through her. “Kiyo! Come on, I know you can’t hear me, but please turn around!”

“You’re wasting your breath, kid. She won’t be able to hear you.”

“Come on! You have to let me warn her, you, you…!” she struggled for something to call him, his name, his species type.

“Whaaaat, don’t know my name?”

“No! Tell me so I can yell at you!”

“Meh, what use is in a name?”

“Just tell me it already!”

He paused for a moment, rubbing his vague chin. After debating if he should speak his name, he responded.

“…Akuba.”

“Okay, then, Akuba, let me at least notify Kiyo!” Her heart began racing. The Vaporeon was drawing close, and the fire trainer was still concentrated on the Tyranitar.

“I told you, there’s no way for your voice to be heard…”

“KIYO!” she screamed with her heart, as though it’d make the entire difference, “GET OUTTA THERE! LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!”

“…Eh?” The fire trainer then paused from her antics, turning around. Crystal beamed that she had perhaps gotten through to her, but it turned quickly to a frown. The Vaporeon was leaping up to her already.

“KIYO! NO!” Crystal cried, watching as her friend attempted to fight the Vaporeon off, only to realize she was falling into the lake. She paralyzed up, and there was a mighty splash.

“Excellent. Now, Maelstra, Whirlpool. Don’t let her come out from it breathing,” the sickening Missile Admin chuckled, and the Bubble Jet Pokemon grinned widely as she started encircling the girl.

Kiyo appeared to be fighting for her life, spinning around wildly. The whirlpool took a bizarre effect though, and lifted the girl up into a spherical cage of water above the surface of the lake. The youngest Dustren shot nasty glances at Kinshayti when she could, trying to grab a Pokeball off her waste. She was too dizzy to pull off the Gyarados’s Net Ball, however, and soon she appeared more concentrated on holding in her oxygen. A terrible look of weakness was spreading over her face.

“Akuba, we have to do something! She’s going to drown! She can’t swim!” Crystal cried, trying futily to grab onto the ghost-poison type.

“As much as I’d like to, what good would it do, anyways? You know you’re not strong enough to take on Kinshayti. There’s no way one of your Pokemon would escape alive from that.” His words pierced straight into Crystal’s heart. He’s…right. I couldn’t do anything to help…am I really so helpless, that I can’t even protect those that have done so much for me…? Akuba narrowed his eyes to the scene, completely dropping the joking façade.

“Tsk…I thought you’d be less of a push over than that. Well, maybe you do take too much after Fell after all.” Kiyo suddenly cringed at that, appearing heartbroken, as well as angered beyond all belief. “…Maybe I should have just let you drown in the first place, so many years ago. It would’ve saved me so much trouble…” Kiyo opened her mouth lamely, as though trying to shout something in retort, but one last air bubble shot out from her mouth.

“Fell?” Crystal questioned, gazing at the sweating Gengar.

“That was a low blow, Kinshayti…” he growled.

“Who is…Kara!” She suddenly watched as Kara, with a horrified look upon her face, came dashing out with Flareon by her side.

“Kiyo! Crystal?!” Kara’s eyes raced around the area. She reached for her Greatball, the one containing Zaika, but Kinshayti turned to her.

“If you wish to stay alive and possibly live through your sentence, traitor Kara, then don’t make a move.” The Tyranitar then loomed up behind her, bear-hugging her and pinioning her. She cried out in a little pain, panic written all over her face. “Well, might as well just finish this off. Maelstra, go in for the kill.” Crystal’s heart dove into her legs like a ton of cement, and tears began to weld up in her eyes. The mismatching eyes fought for a second longer in that sorrowed expression before they shut.

“You always were a heartless knave, weren’t you, Kinshayti?”

A voice suddenly emitted from nearby, and a flash of light on the pond revealed something…big. Huge was more like it. It easily toppled over the Tyranitar by two feet. And whatever that blue creature was with the shell on its back was, it was angry. “Alright Lapras, Ice Beam to freeze up all the water!” The Lapras roared appreciatively at the command, and after creating a block of ice to rest on, it froze the entire lake easily, except for Kiyo’s cage. The water lost its form, and the poor unconscious girl nearly came down to the ice with a crash. A split second before her head hit the frozen water, though, something of a blue dog with spikes upon the back of its wrists and its chest came into reality, taking the girl into his arms.

The creature faded from reality in what was Extremespeed, and rested Kiyo on the ground not too far away from the Tyranitar. The blue dog then glared up at the monster a few feet taller than it, and then speedily moved in. Dante cried in pain, staggering back and losing his grip on the frightened Kara as well-placed punches fired into his side, nearly invisible while attacking. The blue dog, once he kicked the monster away, caught Kara, and placed her with the unconscious elder of their group. He then faded away once again, just as a man of six feet jumped down from his perch. The blue dog took to his side. Crystal struggled to make out his cool features- he had sky blue hair, and seemed to he wearing a classic pair of shades. He wore simple clothing- a violet vest over a shirt sleeved, graying shirt with heavy denim pants to go with it. His worn sneakers scuffed against the ground as he smirked, Kinshayti growling.

“This was none of your business to intrude on my match.”

“Come on, you really don’t think I was not going to interfere with something as important as this? …You know, you always were weak, Kinshayti. So, unless you want to run along, then I suggest you send out more than your prized killing machines.” His voice was ripe with anger, and she paused for a moment before recalling both Maelstra and Dante.

“This isn’t our last match.”

“Running again. How weak you really are,” he spat in her direction as she took off, but not before she went and threw a compact purple ball onto the ice. Toxic fumes started emitting from it, and at this the man frowned.

“Gah, that’s no good…Luc, let’s get outta here!” With thick arms he latched onto the blue dog. ‘Luc’ faded to and from sight in Extremespeed, arriving on the frozen lake beside the two feminine trainers. Umbree had run up to Kiyo’s side as her Pokemon retreated into their balls, but instead of diving back into his Pokeball, he glared up. Right at Crystal and the Gengar.

“Akuba! Now!” the Umbreon ordered, and before Crystal knew what was happening, the ghost finally let go of her, returning her into the conscious world. Even with three passengers on its shoulders, ‘Luc’ soon caught the girl as she staggered out from the ghostly realm. Her head was pounding, and she felt unconsciousness come onto her.

“Luc, Extremespeed!” the man roared, and soon, not only did the conscious realm fade from Crystal, but the real world rushed by.

And now, let us hear some speculation! HAHAHAHA! *goes off to fiddle with Diamond*

No, Kinshayti is the mother and the unborn great-grandfather of Kiyo.

In all seriousness, you're just gonna have to keep reading to find out, now aren't you? |3

Luc EX: Probably, but at this point a) I really don't care, b) not important to the story c) I wanted her to be in the same divish as Dylan. That, and she turns eleven next chapter- isn't it 11-15 for seniors?

Yeah, I know. 11-14, and it's based on what year you're born in.
Why only Top 4 at Regionals?

And now, let us hear some speculation! HAHAHAHA!

So don't get mad at me for speculating :nonono:.

Mehmeh, details, details. :p And Team Missile prolly donked the turnout. You know, lotta people being forced to stay in Zenith and the like, which is the most populated city in the Beghta Region. Something tells me that they're not letting the kiddies go there, and so they probably didn't have too many Jr/Srs in attending the tourney (less they're journeying).

Who said anything about me getting mad? It amuses me to no end to see speculation. I just never answer speculation to keep people reading. XP

Yeaaaaah, it's Lucario.

Anyways, I'm going to be re-writing RQO quite a bit, so there won't be another chapter for a very, very long time. All of the updates for the new chapters will be in this or their appropriate posts. Sorry guyz. >_>
