Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Staples or 'near staples' from MD-on?

I'm still a bit new to Pokemon TCG and would like to know the staple cards(probably a lot of Trainers) and near staple(Luxray G Lv. X) for the next rotation.

Please include other practical cards as well.

Thanks.

** denotes cards that are staples for a popular archetype and not much more than that one deck or it's offshoots.
## denotes cards that see fair use now, but will probably increase in popularity when their better counterpart is rotated out.

Uxie (LA)
Uxie Lv. X (LA)
Azelf (LA)
Call Energy (MD)
Gyarados (SF)**
Machamp (SF)**
Machamp Lv. X (SF)**

Energy Gain (PT)
Sableye (SF)**
Warp Point (MD)
Super Scoop Up (MD/UL)
Cyclone Energy (SF)**
Warp Energy (SF)**
Double Colorless Energy (HS)
Luxray GL (RR)
Luxray GL Lv. X (RR)
Garchomp C (SV)

I'm sure other people have some opinions on what should be taken off this list or put on but I tried to only include popular archetypes (so no charizard, feraligatr, crobat though it's supposed to "get good", etc.)

Also, i can't see Judge having much (not I say MUCH) use in the next format as there won't be any reliable recovery from it for either player. I have drawn into a seriously junk 4 card set off my own Judge at least 50% of the time I have used it. Of course, with Claydol, you don't notice that much. Without it, it'd be self crippling.

Also, i'd add Chatot MD to the list. Maybe even as a ## as with no draw power, free retreat and free reshuffle could be game breaking. Donphan prime also needs to eb on that list, it will survive both LuxChomp and Machamp, the two most forseeeablely playable decks.

Chatot and Collector definitely need to be on there, yes.

I debate Jumpluff's viability and I really question the plausibility of Tyranitar.

Staraptor FB X isn't going to show up. SP and Machamp/Donphan will be the two big decks in the new format unless the new sets shake things up a lot. I suspect we're going to see more Quagsire GL use as well.

Jumpluff has won more BRs than any other deck IIRC, so of course it would be on there. Keep in mind this guy was asking for CURRENT MD-on staples... no one knows what will be popular later, half those cards could dissapear from the metagame for all we know. If I had to make a guess, yeah, Jumpluff's probably going to die without Claydol engine. But depends on what gets released/what everyone else is playing.

Tyrannitar, eh, I kinda agree but it has taken a few BRs and has had some pretty good records from what I've seen so I included it. Though I would agree it would rank very low on that list.

Added Chatot and Collector, and whoeve told me to add Donphan prime, it was already there, just near the bottom.

They don't need it now, no reason they will need it next season. SP's really lost nothing.

True that. They haven't even lost the expected Uxie or Call so really their only loss is Roseanne's... which to be honest is pretty much nothing, especially considering everyone else lost it. It'll probably just get replaced with Collector or something. I really doubt Staraptor FB X will make it's way into SP... it was on my consideration list for replacement claydol come rotation but hopefully they'll release something better.

i dunno i think usage will drop and definitely not win as much, but it probably wont die altogether, im personally gonna try it with sunflora to see if that works, but i wont know till i test it

The problem isn't getting out a Jumpluff... it's being able to get everything you need to make sure you ALWAYS have a jumpluff and are always taking a prize, including stuff like Night Maintenance (which is being rotated to the best of my knowledge, unless they include POP8 + POP9) to get them back in the deck, BTS to get it out again, luxray engine and poketurns, etc. etc. etc.

it needs some kind of non-specific and fast draw support.

I'm truthfully going to say that Toxicroak G PL and Skuntank G PL become near staples in SP decks. They're one of the only ways that SP stands a chance against Machamp. Yes, they do have Dialga G for Deafen and sniping powers, but other than that, "Take Out."

I think at the least some will try Staraptor FB Lv X with Claydol now gone, unless the luxray lv x techs really become more disgustingly rampant than they are now...

i run staraptor fb x in my deck and its so consistent its unbelievable

any supporter i need at anytime i need it? amazing

spiritomb? no problem

need energy? throw 1 interviewers question to grab some DCE

pokemon just died, and have a bad hand? 1 cynthias feelings will fix that

just want to draw? guess ill grab a prof. oaks visit.

i really think its amazing, and runs really well in my sp decks

how it would run in others im not sure.

...until you're Bright Looked up to active and 1HKO'd. Plus it's a Lv.X. Plus in SP you can't afford to waste a turn when you could be Cyrusing to use an Interviewer's Question.

I used it in my LuxChomp (by this I mean really early LuxChomp, back in like October when the idea hadn't started to catch on) to begin with, but it was eventually replaced because you normally just Cyrus chain every turn. If you want to initiate a Cyrus chain, Sableye's your man - a lot less set-up needed.

Of course, HoPe is the exception to all of these things :p

lol i knew somebody would throw that out there :p. im really sad about the loss of roseannes, that card was great and i really dont think collector replaces it for some decks. as sometimes you could really use that one energy or something.

i do think some people will try staraptor tho, its not great in stage 2 unless you can powerlock so no brightooking, and its not really needed in luxchomp so i think the only dek thatll use it is HoPe :p

Palmer's should be included since without Night Maintenance, it will be the only way to recover both Pokemon and Energy from the discard. Then again, I'm anxious to see if recovery without NM is feasible since Supporters are usually spent to draw.
