Starting set

I'm. Wondering what would be a good set to start my collecting with. Or what would be best way of getting good cards? Also is it a good idea to mail cards by mail?

I'm a full on collector myself, and I started by attending Prereleases and buying packs of the newest sets. Starting with the HGSS series would be a good choice, since they are going to stay in rotation for a good while and have a large number of awesome cards like Primes and Legends.

As for the mail thing, if you put them in plastic holders, they should be just fine.

Base set would be a good place to start.

I want to get a base set charizard I heard they are rare but also it's hard to come by packs of the base set

I was thinking of starting with HGSS because So far the only pack I got was a hs unleashed booster so I might as well try to finish the set
Thanks for the advice

Don't buy packs. Buy singles. Or better yet, trade for them.

If you start a trade thread here on PokeGym, and prove yourself a good trustworthy trader, you can complete any set you like relatively quickly. Also, base set Charizard isn't really all that rare. You can get one from the unlimited set for about $12-15 in trade value or buy one for about the same price.

But you can only have so many cards to trade, and then what? I say, buy packs until you have most of the set, then trade for the ones you need.

How exactly would you be able to trade through pokegym, and I saw a base set shadowless charizard for a two thousand on ebay, also how do you know if they are a trusted trader:confused:

Assuming you mean buying singles or packs, there's actually another way to go: Buying the complete set. If you don't attend Prereleases, this is probably the cheapest way to go. I personally never have done so because I go to prereleases and enjoy opening packs. If there are select cards you want, obviously singles is the best choice.

Oh ok by buying the complete set do you mean boxes

-clueless question-
What exactly does one do at a prerelease?

Also...

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is... ;)
So if you want say a $40 card, and someone offers it for like 30 c/uc cards of yours, it probably is a scam... Not always but probably 95+% of the time ;)

No, there is many people who collect all the cards of a set, then sell off the COMPLETE set to collectors who don't want to do it themselves (easier way, but I don't like it ;) It takes out all the fun of TRADING with TRADING cards ;D)

haha i was wondering the exact same thing and yea id rather get a box than a whole set

Just know when you get a booster box, you still might not get all the cards of the set ;)

Like LV Xs, Primes, Legends, Secret Rares etc :thumb:

I remember when my friend ordered a Secret Wonders booster box, and expected to get like 10 LV Xs and would trade them, Boy how we were both so naive back then ;)

Get packs then that have gold stars in them?

Like if you like those better than LV Xs, then get like those types of packs (booster box?)

If not, I suggest looking for the best deals possible to build up a little portfolio of great cards to trade, knowing that some of the stars are expensive :thumb:

Good luck getting a golden star card! ^^

They are really nice xD
A kid down the street from me had a golden star mew before... -sighs- back in the good old days xD

Hopefully you can get one, or more!

You need a lot of luck, patience and determination to get them though ;D

Thanks i looked it up on eBay and the cards are 30 and up individualy :/, but anyway hopefully ill start to form a good collection then maybe we can trade lol :)

But you can only have so many cards to trade, and then what? I say, buy packs until you have most of the set, then trade for the ones you need.

1. You buy more current cards and trade the high value meta stuff because it's only that high while it's modified legal then the price plummets.

2. My many years of experience in collecting say get the singles whether trading or buying on the older stuff. I know what I'm talking about. For example you can buy 2 boxes of Jungle for $150-200 and still not have all the cards. You can buy the whole complete set for $50-70 in MINT condition. Buying complete sets is often cheaper than buying/trading singles unless you are trading one in high demand card for a bunch of older cards which have rotated out of the format.

1. Read, understand, and follow these rules and then post a thread in this forum.

2. People try to charge all kinds of ridiculous prices for stuff. That doesn't make it worth that much. Shadowless Charizard is easily obtained for $35 or less in mint condition.

3. You read their iTrader. See the number under my name and avatar that's right beside "iTrader"? Click it.
