Suggestions for a returning player

Hello, I'm trying to come back to this game after an 18 month hiatus.

I started playing when Base Set 2 was the current set and continued to playing competitively up until august of 2005. I stopped for financial reasons mostly, and I was also getting burned out.

I've attended a couple of pre-releases since I stopped because I knew that in a pre-release, it didn't matter what cards you had. Everyone was on an equal footing. I might like to mention that if it weren't for the pre-releases I would never have come back. (a side comment on that other thread about the prize support at pre-releases)

I've been trolling this board for the last 4 days trying to get up-to-speed on things.

anyway, what I'm looking for here is suggestions on what sets are important and what cards are important. I also don't know what older cards are still legal. I'm not interested in getting competitive with tournaments just yet. I need to bet back into the swing of things, but i do want to play Modified-legal decks.

So here's what I have currently from the current Modified:

Deoxys - I was playing when this set was released and I have most of the cards.

Emerald - I was playing when this set was released and I have most of the cards.

Unseen Forces - I went to the pre-release. I have a ton of this, I have no idea why.

Delta Species - I went to the pre-release. But that's all I have.

Legend Maker - Nothing

Holon Phantoms - Nothing

Crystal Guardians - Nothing

Dragon Frontiers - I went to the pre-release, But that's all I have.

Power Keepers - Pre-release... new set

Trainer Kit 2 - what?

POP series 2, 3, and 4 - uh.. yeah... only POP1's here

Black Star promos #029+ - I have no idea.

As you can see, I missed 3 whole sets!

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i feel your pain
i kinda drifted off and missed deoxys and emerald when i did so
i would recomend you take a look at what cards are in the three sets you missed, and go check out what you want
you can then trade for what you need
this way, you can avoid buying boxed upon boxes of cards

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at the card scans here and it's hard for me to figure out what I want to do.

I have a couple of friends who will hook me up with commons and uncommons, but I don't want to get in to a large expense right away. And what would I have to trade with given that 90% of my collection isn't tournament legal anymore?
