Hey all

Can someone provide me Kona's public transport info site where we can arrange transport to supermarkets etc?

Me and my friend rather want to save money on food cause reastaurant meals are going to be too expensive :/

also, is there are any areas at the venue where you allow to have a smoke?

Thanks.

As far as I know the only transportation device on the Big Island are rental cars and cabs/taxis.

To travel between the islands:
There are a couple of Hawaiian Airlines who offer trips between the islands (Aloha Airlines is one of them) and a roundtrip to Oahu (that"s where Honululu is) costs around $80. Trip to Maui approx $160.

In Honululu they have Bus transport though.

I don't know anything where you can go shopping though.

Hi Jason,

Airport Transportation - 3 options: Rental Car, Taxi or Speedishuttle shuttle service.

I recommend reading the reviews from Trip Advisor regarding the Hilton Waikoloa Village plus other reviews on the web.

Some things I have discovered:

Transportation between KOA (Kona Airport) and HWV:

Least expensive car rentals were Thrifty, Alamo and Dollar. Yes, there is a Budget office at HWV, but note that there is a $50 one-way fee if you wanted to rent the car at the airport and drop it off at HWV (or vice-versa).

Taxi service between KOA airport and HWV - The Hilton operator told me a taxi would cost $50, but a visitor's post said theirs cost $65. (I believe the $65).

SpeediShuttle shuttle service - their website

You can make a reservation on the web or call 877.242.5777 - need a credit card to reserve, but you pay at the airport - cash or credit card. (I do not know what their cancellation policy is). Here are some of the prices that I found. (If this is a possible option, you may want to make a separate post for anyone else who will be using this service and can share the shuttle cost.)

# passengers.... total $ (round trip)........$ per person
1................................ 76.......................... 76
2................................ 81.......................... 41
3................................ 93.......................... 31
4............................... 101......................... 26
12............................. 287.......................... 24
12+.............................. need to call

Transportation at the Hotel:
There is a shuttle to the Kings' Shops shopping center at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, located about 1 mile from the HWV entrance. I believe it is a $1 fee per ride. The shuttle comes by every 30 minutes and operates between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. There are several "inexpensive" dining options. Remember, the "inexpensive" is relative.

HWV does provide a free shuttle to the local beach.

Food/Groceries at the Hotel:

There is a Whaler's General Store at both the hotel and at King's Shops. Expensive, but should carry the basic grocery supplies. The closest real grocery store is in Waikoloa, the Waikoloa Village Market - 15 minute drive, requires a car.

Each room has a mini-fridge, so you can stock up on milk, deli meats, cheese, etc. One of the posts mentioned making Ramen noodles in the room. Each room has a coffeemaker, so that could help out. (My husband is even thinking about packing our small quesadilla maker.)

Note: The hotel is notorious about nickel and diming the guests (if it were only nickels and dimes). One post even mentioned being charged for using the ground coffee in the room. Coffee drinkers may want to buy their own coffee and milk/cream.

Hope this helps, and congrats on the Nats win!

I don't know about the public areas (I suspect anywhere outdoors is fine), but I found this from my hotel fact sheet:

Smoking is ONLY allowed on the guest room lanais on the following towers:

Lagoon Tower: Floor 6

Palace Tower: Floor 7

Ocean Tower: Floor 6 (rooms 6054-6093), floor 7 (rooms 7040-7053 and 7094-7102) & floor 8 (rooms 8001-8039)

Hope that helps!

Where does it say that you have to pay to use the coffee in the room?

Every hotel I've stayed at throughout the world has provided complimental coffee and maker..

Hi Poliwag92,

Agree - same here. (I have to believe the use of the coffeemaker is still complimentary.)

I was so surprised by the reviewer's coffee comment (from Nov. 2006) which is why I noted it in my post above. Note that this particular reviewer gave an overall rating of 10, so I don't have any reason to believe that it was a disgruntled vacationer review.

Just something to be aware of. I guess LaQuinta, Holiday Inn, etc. can provide free coffee and also free breakfast since they don't have to feed the dolphins and the other exotic animals.

Yeah I wasn't trying to say that the coffee maker wasn't free to use. I was going at the ground coffee. The website didn't say anything but that is just out of the ordinary to charge for that kind of stuff that is standard in every other hotel.

Some of the reviews I've read mention that the first packet of coffee is complimentary and others are at a charge. But I don't know if that's per day or per stay. TripAdvisor is a great site for hotel reviews. Not all of them are nice and sunshine-y, though!

Well I prefer to get the facts straight from the hotel....

I called them today... is that "straight from the hotel" enough for you?

The first packet of coffee is free each day. Additional packets of coffee are $3.75 each. Not bad really considering most of us pay over $3.00 a day for fancy schmancy coffee here in Washington!

Oahu is a blast! I can vouch for that as I have made 7 trips "averaging" about 1 month stays and it is by far the funnest place I have ever been. Sooo much to do and see. Especially going to the pearl harbour memorial.

Kona I have never been to but I am sure there will be bus transports or even shuttles from the hotel which would be fairly reasonable.:thumb:

Kinda funny, I was mistaken a few times as a local native!!! XD

clothes shopping

Hi,
(my disclaimer: I'm not much of a shopper)

I know some folks visiting the USA are interested in clothing to take back home. I don't know Hawaii but I looked it up and there is a "Ross Dress For Less" store in Kona. This is like an outlet store. they have name brands, both men and women's, at marked down prices.

Here's the info:

Bohn: I know you were looking for some shopping sites.

Remember, Hawaii is an expensive state and anything around ANY resort hotel is bound to be more expensive, no matter where you are. That includes food and clothes. But in Hawaii, the fresh air, sunshine and the ocean are free!
