One day last month I checked the League listings on the official site to see if any league locations had been set up in central Georgia, USA since I had left for college in coastal GA, and I found one, a new card shop in Warner Robins (15-30 min away from home).
The last time there had been a local league was in 2000, just before the local Books-A-Million sold their souls to YuGiOh and threw away their Pokemon TCG league for lack of interest. Since then I had no one to playtest my deck against except my friends, who are still rather inexperienced at the game and don't really present much of a challenge. I was still able to go online and use Apprentice, but being more of a visual learner I still have a hard time being able to learn from my battles online.
Now we have a league. Unfortunately, they're in Warner Robins, and I'm in Savannah, at least three hours away. And to make matters worse, their league sessions only take place on Mondays, so I can't come home for the weekends to attend League. Yet I still wish to be able to support and promote this League.
Last weekend I came home for Easter. When my mother and I went to WR to pick up art supplies, I remembered the card store and asked my mom to drive me there. It was in a place I recognized, where an old pet shop used to be, right next to an occult store I liked to visit. I walked in and talked to the store clerk, who seemed enthusiastic to have a professor with a local base residence who felt strongly about wanting to support the League. He asked for my name and phone number, and I told him my email address would be on the League website. (Oops, that part of the site is down. I hope he can still use my number.) He told me he would pass this information on to the players.
Now I have a League. But now what do I do? When the summer months come, I will return home, and then I will be able to physically attend League sessions. Right now I'm working on a website that teaches new players how to play, as well as a small compendium of card information and rulings, but is there anything else I can do for the League from where I am? What else can I do to support and promote my League?
