surgery...

yes, thats right. surgery. what do i mean? two weeks ago, i found out that i will be having back surgery.
i was born with scoliosis on my lower back, and over the past 4 years, it has developed from a 31 degree curve to a 48 degree curve. am i thrilled? not...really. considering for the past 4 years, i have been wearing a back brace nightly (as instructed by the doctor. however, this is nobody's fault--i just got unlucky).
so, i found all this out about 2 weeks ago--pretty earthshaking to me, considering i have never had surgery before. anyway, he says that i will have surgery in the summer. however, 2 days later, me and my dad (who happens to be a doctor) were discussing this and we decided it would be better for me to have surgery in december. next year, i am going to college--i won't really be able to recover fully after the surgery if i had it next summer.
so, whats the date for the surgery? december 12th. i will be in the hospital for about a week, and i will have a month's leave from school.
what exactly are they doing? well, i understood and was able to remember most of it--it was pretty tough for me to absorb this whole concept. basically, they are gonna knock me out, cut open my back, cut open my hip, shave off part of my hip, use the bone from the hip to fuse with my spine, put some screws and a titanium rod in to make things all...straight, and sew me up. after this, i should be 100% healed of scoliosis and i will probably be about 1 or 2 inches taller than i am now.
how long's the recovery? about 6 months until i stop feeling pain. just in time for nationals.
because of the whole hospital-week thing, i'll miss a week of the interweb, meaning, i wont be on the 'gym until i get back home. try not to keep me TOO much in the dark.
why am i posting all this about myself? well, i feel i have been closer to the pokegym than any other site out there.
this is a big change that'll affect me for the rest of my life, and i'll have to go with it.

Good luck! Prayers are with you!
We'll be here. Have someone post an update for you if you can't get online.

Best of luck, dude. I was in a similar situation a while ago with an appendix abcess which I was given a choice about. Either the pain wouldn't occur again, or it may...it was 50/50, but with my school studies, I chose not to have it removed.

Keep us posted on this. God speed. :thumb:

Hope the surgery goes well.

Good luck and best wishes for a speedy and (relatively) painless recovery...

Best of luck. At least it doesn't coincide with Cities at Time Warp, so that is one positive thing for you. Hopefully my Groudon* will help alleviate your pain and stress. :)

GL luck to you. Hope everything goes well.

kinda wierd that I just found out what scoliosis was today at my school

Good Luck.

I don't know you personally, but I wish you best of luck with your surgery and will be hoping to see you soon back on here.

Ben - I'm going to say it in Dutch : "hou je taai knul".

And get back on the Pokegym when you are able again.
Mail me if you are afraid or angry and things are putting you down, I will talk to you in my funny English.

Benny,
I had the pleasure of meeting you at worlds. Good luck with the surgery you will be in the prayers of several people.

hi! i don't really know you, but i've had two surgerys in my short life. lol. one of them was major and i just want u to know that i sorta know what ur going through. Also that it's obviously hurts some, but it's worth it and it's not really THAT bad. I think the worst part is worrying about it. lol. GL. ^__^

My ex-girlfriend had scoliosis and had to have two metal rods put into her back, and they're still there today.

She can't bend laterally anymore.

Good luck.

I wish you the best in hopes everything turns out well. I wonder how flexible you'll be with that rod in your back. I'd lay off the limbo for a while ;).

The process of surgery to correct scoliosis is a very safe one if I recall correctly, despite working with the spine which is usually a pretty delicate area to work with. So really there shouldn't be much to worry about except the lack of HBO on the TV when the anethesia wears off.

Good luck.
