T16 GA Regionals w/ HUGE sour grapes

I’m not even going to bother with a long, detailed prologue to this so here’s the skinny:
Leave Florida Friday morning
Get to Georgia Friday evening
Eat dinner
Test some
Choose deck
Get three hours of sleep
Get up
Last minute changes
Play.

Now I will elaborate on a few things in the list. I decided to go with Gliscor because my past experiences in Georgia told me that the field would be Gigas and a bunch of random non-G decks so I can get away with a bunch of easy Crobat+Skuntank+Pester prizes. As for the last minute changes, I’d been playing with my standard three warp in the deck since I built it, yet in most games, I’d rarely even used ONE of them so I dropped one for a fourth Gligar thus making my list look like this:

19
2 Baltoy
2 Claydol
2 Crobat G
4 Gligar
2 Promo Gliscor
1 Gliscor LA
1 Gliscor Lv X
1 Pachirisu
2 Skuntank G
1 Unown G
1 Uxie LA

28
4 Bebe
3 Broken Time Space
2 Cynthia
3 Cyrus
1 Looker
1 Luxury Ball
1 Night Maintenance
4 Poketurn
1 Premier Ball
4 Roseanne
2 Stark Mountain
2 Warp Point

13
4 Call Energy
9 Fighting

I figured that the significant lack of Kingdra and Palkia based decks would give me at worst 55-45 matchups against the field so I registered and went on my way.

Round 1 vs Random w/ Torterra
I T2 Pester KO his Grotle and from there I’m able to just level up my active and night slash his field for prizes and I bench him after about three turns.

1-0

Round 2 vs Random w/ Piplup and Turtwig?
We both mulligan on our initial draw and I see two Prinplups so I get a little worried as Empoleon isn’t that nice to play against with fragile, water-weak guys. I proceed to mulligan three more times and eventually get a Baltoy start. He goes first, attaches to his active Piplup, and packs me. I draw, Looker away his double Prinplup/Empoleon and call for a second Baltoy and a Gligar predicting a Bebe+Brine for an easy prize. He whiffs the Bebe and I get to poison structure+bat drop+evo and T2 his active with Claydol. He promotes Grotle and KOs me. I promote Gliscor LA and level up so I can pester KO and night slash the rest of the game

2-0
Lunch: John and I go over to Lobster Feast and enjoy a very pleasant Shrimp/Lobster meal. GREAT food and we’re both so stuffed that we didn’t even want to play the next round.

Round 3 vs Nick Fragnito w/ Torterra feat. Champ
I’m able to drop T1 dol and promo Gliscor but like I told Nick, I just had a bad feeling about the game at the start. He hits all of his scoops to get out of Shoot Poison and it’s just too hard to take down Torterras with Gliscors. I managed to keep it close but at the end I whiff two Cutting Turn flips to get myself back in the game. GG Nick

2-1

Round 4 vs Marty w/ Houndoom Lock
First thing, Marty lives about ten minutes away from my house so driving seven and a half hours to play this game was PRETTY lame =/ Second, I know Marty's list card for card and he probably only has about three quarters of mine memorized since I gave it to his son for the day too. To top it all off, it just isn't a good matchup for him. I set up fast while he struggles and the fact that he can't lock anything makes it a quick game. GG Marty and sorry about it having to happen like that. I wish you had made cut.

3-1

Round 5 vs Peter Griffin w/ Blaziken/Manectric
I open pretty strong with a T1 promo Gliscor and double warp point to 30+burn his Electrike and he fails the burn flip so I get a prize and he just has a Ray left on the field. He Gs it and calls next turn. This was the only game where I missed my third warp but it was ok. I get an early three prize lead but we begin trading two for ones as he continues to switch/warp out of my Shoot Poison and has a night maintenance, rare candy AND roseannes/bebe every time I KO a Blaziken. He makes a good play in the middle of the game with the GE Blaze since I assumed he only ran platinum Blazikens. He ashes my bench LA Gliscor but I still get him one to one. He hits FOUR heads on speed gain but doesn’t have another lightning in hand/discard so he Roseannes to get the second one for game and it’s his last prize. He looks so disappointed at this point and just retreats and Bulks up for 30. I retreat and poison structure+pester for game. GG

4-1

Round 6 vs Someone w/SpeedChump feat. Houndoom G
I don’t remember the specifics of this game I just know that I Looker T1 and see that he has potential T1 Champ material but my start was so terrible that I still had to shuffle in. He gets the T1 champ but isn’t able to capitalize since he missed the energy drop T1. I eventually KO five Machamps and his Uxie Lv X for my six prizes since Champ just can’t deal with evolutions that are resistant.

5-1

Round 7 vs Kyle Sabelhaus w/ Deafen Lock
I’ve known Kyle for years and I know it’s going to be a good game. We’re both pretty tired and talk about flipping a coin for the game but we decide to play it out. I get a really nice play early game where he can’t spray my Shoot Poison and I hit the Cutting Turn to KO his Lv X w/ two special metals and he’s already played all of his poketurns and his premier ball. We hit a slump midgame where we just go back and forth letting his active Bronzong take poison damage while I try to find a stadium and he builds his bench. It eventually comes down to the fact that I have three turns to hit a Cutting Turn flip to win the game the following turn and I whiff on ALL of them. Really sucks but I guess when you live by the coin you die by the coin. It was a good game but I feel that I deserved it.

5-2

I make cut at 12th seed and find I have to play the ONLY palkia deck in the field... AWESOME

T16 vs Matt Thompson w/ Dialga/Palkia
Matt seems to be a newer player who has almost no idea what he’s doing in this matchup so I have a much better shot at this game than I would otherwise.

Game 1: I start with Skuntank and he Gains his active Dialga and benched Palkia T1. I warp and search for my Pachirisu and Crobat so I can KO his Palkia and save myself a lot of trouble but I find out that Pachi is prized. I play the game out because it still looked like I had a shot at winning it but he was able to conserve Poketurns for late game prizes and I scoop when he has one left.

Game 2: I start with Pachi this game and his pace of play seems to slow down even more. Before he’s even finished setting up his field I was done with my turn. His play was slow to the point of forcing me to have to take turns which were thirty seconds or less. Later in the game, I have about twelve cards left in my deck and I actually hadn’t checked to see if I had my premier ball or second bat until this point so I guess shame on me but I Cynthia a three card hand back to the deck to try to find either of the cards to take my fourth prize to force a sudden death game. I draw my eight, neither of them are there so I dump cards and Cosmic Power for five and can’t find the cards. Time gets called on his next five minute turn which consists of attaching and attacking and I’m left to just flip over my top card and it’s the bat for the win.

5-3

If I had won this game I would’ve played against Kingdra in T8 which would’ve arguably been a tough game but a much more winnable game easily followed by TWO Champ games and I would’ve statistically won regionals.

Props
Gliscor because it’s just that cool
Weazong for being the play in Florida
Twitchy

Slops
Getting tails on Cutting turn FTL over a total of FIVE turns
Twitchy for getting stalled TWICE so he whiffs cut in FL
Myself for getting stalled out of T8 and the eventual win in the tournament
Stalling
Stupid players

Not much else to say. Time to get ready for nats. All I can say is that I won't let any of my games go to time.

Major props for Gliscor. Was nice to see some unexpected decks in T16. It's pretty funny that you come up expecting to see Gigas from Georgia and the major Georgia players opt not to play it.

Do you know how t16 panned out? I rageleft after T16.

Top 4 was Matt, Kyle, TJ and Kevin
Top 2 was TJ and Kevin
Kevin won despite making the dumbest play of the tourney by using Take out on a G'd Uxie

Nice deck idea there! and yea I kno how u feel about ure top 16 match since I too have to encounter that in Top 8 too.

Jason- Ya it was just dumb =/ Thanks for the props though

Josh- Not your fault obviously man. Just bad luck on my part. If I had hit a flip against Kyle I would have been on a much better side of the bracket where I could avoid both Kingdra decks and the Palkia.

gj aaron. sorry for those bad beats Suckes to have that happen to you, there wasnt a judge watching or you didnt call a judge to come and watch?

The biggest thing was the deck list and my flips against Kyle =/ Those flips basically lost me the tourney

Statistically, you are one of the better players of this game. Statistically, you are my 2009 Regional Champion. 'Nuff said.

It's ok Aaron.

I'm very sorry that you got screwed over by a staller. Good job getting to T16.

Also, if you don't know what burn does you do NOT belong at a premier event.... There I said it

Ken- Thanks for the props and I guess it's ok. Nothing I can do about any of this after the fact so I just need to get over it.

Greg- Thanks =) How did you do in FL?
