t8 Missouri Regionals Report w/ Dialga

Prologue:

I haven't played much this year; I played Luxray/Garchomp at states and didn't really like the deck. I decided I'd go back to Dialga. I went to Vince's new store to hang out for a bit. I didn't have my deck built so I didn't really playtest. I drove to pick up Bela and a bunch of people and I went to Zach's house. We stop to go to Wal-Mart to buy art supplies and other things; this detour included Zach trying his hardest to lose me by performing some very elite driving maneuvers. At Wal-Mart I am relieved at the company's excellent marketing skills because I really wanted to stumble upon Spider-Man action figures while buying flower pots. We leave to Zach's house. I built my deck at Zach's house and continue to be unproductive past that. The highlight of that day was a story involving a turtle and a greedy man.

Event:

I register for the event in the nick of time just like virtually any other event I've ever attended. My sleeves are deemed to be marked even though I just got them yesterday. I am given the exact same brand, color, etc. of sleeves and fix the problem by replacing my sleeves with their near-carbon copies. A friend gives me his Garchomp C that he got for regionals and I am pretty ecstatic about playing both Dialga and Garchomp that have a PokeBall symbol on them.

Round 1 v. ??? w/ Donphan 1-0

I have a pretty bad start but so does she. I eventually bench her.

Round 2 v. Rachel A w/ Spiritomb/Gengar 2-0

Her start wasn't optimal. As long as I could fish out Dialga Lv. X I wouldn't have too much trouble. I got out Dialga Lv. X.

Round 3 v. Michael S w/ Luxray/Garchomp 3-0

I make him waste his Power Sprays early on. Deafen slows him down as he can't get his level xs or attach any tools. After I get enough Metal energy on Dialga and all that I start killing things. I anticipate his Ambipom so I use Earthquake and a Crobat to respond to his Garchomp. I then attach an energy and kill his other Garchomp, still avoiding his Ambipom. He struggles then on, bringing up my Claydol on multiple occasions which just makes me waste my DCE.

Round 4 v. ??? w/ Jumpluff/Luxray 4-0

I kill a things before I could really get going, as he responds to each of them. I eventually lock in Galactic HQ, making all of his Jumpluff easy to OHKO without any assistance. I lose a Dialga and Claydol but it doesn't matter as at that point I'm set up enough to survive his attacks.

Round 5 v. Keelan D w/ Donphan 5-0

I get a pretty nice start. Dialga Lv. X negating his bodies makes this much easier as it becomes a 2hko for either of us but I keep healing Dialga. He plays his Relicanth too early and I am able to anticipate it by neglecting to arbitrarily put down tools on Pokemon to draw more cards with Claydol. Eventually I just kill everything with Dialga.

Round 6 v. Jeff w/ Gyarados 5-1

I get a pretty bad start but am able to recover. This really isn't interesting but he is able to pull out the win by ripping 2 crobats, 2 poketurns, and an expert belt out of nowhere.

Round 7 v. Zak K w/ Gengar/Spiritomb/Shuppet/Mewtwo Lv X/Luxray Lv X 6-1

My start is pretty nice. Dialga Lv X is MVP as always, negating all of those silly Poke-Bodies. I miss a few opportunities because of Poke-Turns being prized. He negates an insane amount of prizes for me by slapping expert belt on everything. It gets down to 1-1 for each of us, and he switches between Gengar SF. I wasn't willing to risk the flip so I deafen or pass until I can do something. He is forced to promote a Gengar with 90 HP on it and no belt so I Aaron's for the psychic energy I used on my Toxicroak earlier, and toxic him with Crobat.

Dinner:

I had a fabulous time with Bela, Zach, and Will at Jack in the Box that I could not wait to write on PokeGym about!

Top 16 v. Sam L w/ Shuppet/Dunsprace

Game 1: He starts with his Spiritomb which is unfortunate because that means I can't Deafen as early as I'd like to. His subsequent turn he goes nuts with trainers but is unable to kill my Dialga. It ultimately wouldn't have mattered because he wasted all of his PokeTurns and had just 1 Crobat left so there was no way he'd know out another Dialga for the rest of the game. Anyway he whiffs on the remaning Crobat and PlusPowers or whatever so Dialga lives. I use Deafen after that and heal it eventually so it doesn't matter. He tries to put me to sleep or paralyze me with his pokemon but I always keep the lv x/warp energy/poke turn in my hand to prevent that from making a difference. I break the lock a few times to take prizes when I was certain Dialga was safe and win from there.

Game 2: His start is worse if only because it wasn't Spiritomb. I get off my deafen and play Snowpoint Temple to make him think I don't have the KO and replace it with Galactic HQ to score an easy prize. The same deal happened after.

Top 8 v. Colin M w/ Palkia/Mesprit

Game 1: This is one of the best games I've ever had, and certainly the best all season. It's unfortunate that I don't have too many details but we were in gridlock for the longest time and kept trading prizes. This game also took the whole 60 minutes. I knew I could eventually overtake him with Dialga but I all I saw were 1 Metal and 1 DCE. I missed a ridiculous amount of energy drops, making Garchomp really hard to do anything with, and Dialga was forced to use Deafen and took maximum damage. I checked the bottom of my deck after the match to see all of my special energy clumped together. It's too bad that I always lose in the topcut to stupid deck failures like these, but at least it was to a player deserving to win, even if not in this particular situation.

Pro:
