Tangrowth nom noms in Houston!

Here's a quick breakdown of my history. So last year was my first year playing and at Nationals I decided to run Tangrowth/Sceptile for some quick swallow ups and had some moderate success thanks to the awesomeness that was Claydol and his Cosmic Power. With that great power gone, I thought my days of playing the big sack of vines would be over. About 2 months ago I tried rebuilding the deck and had some decent games with it so I decided to test my luck at Texas States. I would then have a terrible day and go 3-3 then drop.

Regionals was my chance to prove to myself that I could make this deck work! I changed a few of my supporter lines and and was good to go! After a long drive to Houston and a great nights rest I was ready for the day to start! I'll post names if I remember them. Sorry to those I dont post!

Round 1 VS Reginald with Charizard

He starts Charmander with Vulpix and Cyndaquil on the bench to my Sableye and I just roll with it like any other match. It takes a few turns to get a Tangrowth set up on the bench and I just hope I can outspeed him. I was able to Swallow Up a Charizrad but he had the rescue attached and was ready to annihilate me. Darn those evolution packs! I blame this loss on Target/Walmart for selling these things to the masses

So I'm a little bummed right off the bat because I know of at least 4 other people playing Charizard and 2 of them lost round 1 so there was a chance I could face another one

0-1

Round 2 VS SP Spread

This match was a little weird. He starts Kyogre I start Sableye Tangela and I've got both of my Twins. I impersonate a collector and he attaches and drizzles. I know hes gonna knock out my Sableye next turn so I get ready for some Twins action. I get a little worried once he sets up a Camerupt GL as I have no idea what it can do but its a fire type and that is scary enough. I belt my Growth to survive an attack then double healer and level up healing growth for the swallow up and game. The deck had a neat concept and I'm glad I walk away with the win.

1-1

Round 3 VS Keeli Tyranitar/Umbreon

This match was insanely difficult for me as Tyranitar has some sick HP too. She takes a quick lead while I sacrifice two Uxies and an Azelf but I am then able to bring in some twins and flash bite and a belted Tyranitar for the the extra damage I need to swallow up. After that I was good to go until Umbreon shows up and Moonlight fangs my Growth Lv X. At this point I am able to spend all my resources to get back warp points and knock out an Azelf and another Tyranitar thanks to Miasma Valley.

2-1

Lunch break comes and goes and Dairy Queen was just delicious! I unfortunately have to go against a friend in the next round.

Round 4 VS Trinh with Donphan

I start Sable with no basics in hand to her double Phanpy. I'm extremely afraid of the donk so I Impersonate Judge to rid myself of my terrible hand and hope to get rid of her potential donk. I end up with a Collector Uxie Twins and pretty much all I need to set up. She wasnt able to knock out the Sableye so I feel like I'm in a great spot. I set up a Tangrowth and belt it to OHKO Donphan. She had another Donphan ready on the bench ready to Heavy Impact with a Belt and hope that I can't do the extra 10 damage needed to KO it. I however drop the Crobat and Swallow Up for game.

3-1

I'm always ecstatic when I'm on a win streak and this was no exception. I look at the pairing and...

Round 4 VS John Kettler with LuxChomp

Ack this guy is famous! He saw me doing a friendly game before the tournament started and so there went my element of surprise! The beginning of the match is a blur but I remember that he takes a quick 2 prize lead. I'm able to twins and start setting up two Tangrowths on the bench. At one point I have two Uxie in a hand of 3 and need to grab some cards I attempt Set up 1 and get power sprayed. I then realize my Smeargle is active and portrait only to be power sprayed. I then proceed to Set Up for 6. I draw a few things I need and start Swallowing Up his Chatot, Luxray, and a Garchomp. He Aarons and a new Garchomp Lv X comes in and Dragon Rush's of my 3 pixies on the bench. so I then Seeker two turns in a row to remove my Uxie and Azelf from the bench leaving only my active and benched Tangrowth. As time is called, we are tied with 2 prizes left with nothing for him to snipe. John scoops.

4-1

Wow! This is crazy awesome! I'm 4-1 and some friends tell me that a few 5-3s can make it into top cut. Last round wasn't nerve wracking enough now the pressure is on.

Round 5 VS LuxChomp

Another LuxChomp!? Lets do it! I start Sableye to his Roserade GL active and Q on the bench. I attach a grass energy to Sableye and I've got a Twins and Collector in hand and decide to impersonate for a Collector grabbing a Tangela, Shaymin, and Uxie. He collectors for Bronzong Garchomp and something else then attaches to Roserade and posion binds. I'm ready to let this sableye take the knockout so I can start using Twins. I attach a grass to Tangela, celebration wind to move the grass from Sableye to Tangela then set up and draw into my Tangrowth. I then impersonate Bebe's Search for Collector to grab my Q and Sableye and another Tangela. He poison binds for knock out. I bring up the Growth and twins for the Belt and DCE. Swallow up! He sends up an Uxie, draws what I assume is a Luxray GL and puts it on the bench then plays SP Rader for the Lv X. I warp point into another Sableye, empty my had as best I can then impersonate Judge to send his Luxray GL Lv X back into his deck. He sets up a Garchomp and Dragonrushes my Tangrowth. Next turn I attach Q to my Sableye to retreat and attempt a healing growth but get power sprayed. No biggie, One Dragon Rush = 2 Poke Healer +! I then Swallow Up 5 more times for the game.

5-1

My friends were very excited for me but I was incredibly nervous. One win and I'm in, 2 loses and I could be out for the day! I got a few comments from people saying they hope I make it in just to say that a Rogue deck like Tangrowth can compete. I look at the pairings and find out I got paired up

Round 7 VS Jordan with VileGar

Jordan hadn't played in a year but he's 6-0 so I know he means business. The beginning is hazy but he has the constant Trainer lock all game and I'm able to set up a Tangrowth and swallow up his only Gengar in play and he whiff's on the fainting spell! Cool! Maybe I can win this one.... he has the rescue attached so I know he's getting it back. Unfortunately he has the BTS in hand and Poltergeists the rest of the game.

5-2

I'm really nervous now since this would be the first premiere tournament where I could make top cut! So I'm really hoping to not run into another VileGar.

Round 8 VS Casey with Gyarados

I hate to go against Casey here since he's a friend but we go ahead and make a match out of it. I won the coin flip and started with Smeargle. He starts Azelf and I portrait and see he has two Collectors, so I use Collector and get Sableye Tangela and Shaymin. Attach and retreat into Sableye and Judge both of his Collector back into the deck. We both draw new hands and I give him an Uxie. I set up a Tangrowth before he gets a Gyarados out and am able to get my Shaymin X out as well. And the rest is Swallow Up. I was bummed that Casey lost but extremely glad that I won!

6-2

Thankfully Casey and I both make top cut along with a lot of my North Texas friends. So cool!

Top32 vs Aaron H with Chenlock

Game 1. I play Sableye he starts Crobat, I impersonate Collector. Gets a Sableye out, special dark and poketurns for donk. The only one I saw all day!

Game 2 was a little more competitive but he immediately brought out both Blaziken as well as Garchomp. A few Jet Shoots and DragonRush's later thats it!

I had a wonderful time and am glad that a deck I worked hard with was able to at least make top cut in this crazy thing we call a metagame. I can post the list if you guys would like to critique/criticize it :)

Props
-Great Tournament with no hiccups
-Quality opponents
-Only 1 donk!
-People not knowing what Tangrowth does :)

Slops
-1 donk :(
-Jet Shoot

Thanks for reading!

Dude, that is awesome. I thought I saw you in top cut but I had no idea you were running Tangrowth, congrats man! Unfortunate about the pairing in TC, but way to play awesome in Swiss!

Lol, I think I found the only 3 players playing Magnezone...needless to say, it wasn't pretty. I also ran into a Charizard, which I beat, and a Scizor/Umbreon (horrible matchup) which I beat. Didn't see one Gyarados all day and only one Luxchomp....sad day.

But, I did stay and watch through T16 and its a shame, only one Magnezone, lots of Gyarados, lots of Lux, lots of Gengar, would have been pretty good for me.

Anyway, that's awesome you did so well running Tangrowth. I figured you were running Gyarados. Way to go rogue and win.

Hey, this is Aaron from your top 32 match. You had an awesome deck and a great run, and I'm really sorry about your unfortunate weakness pairing in top cut. I'm especially sorry about the luck I got when I got the Donk in our first game. Good luck in the future!

Hey awesome job! I am glad more people are playing Tangrowth. I played it for Regionals too, but my lack of testing I didn't do so hot.

Just a couple of things that I would like to ask. I play with Level Maxes, Junk Arm, Vespiquen UD, and Skymin Level X. I find that they can be really devasting and seeing what your thoughts are on them. Also I think one Tangrowth SF can help out, I played 2 level X a Sf and an AR Tangrowth. I found that I didn't need the 2nd X although I geuss it depends on the person. Anywho just my two cents.

Congrats!

Thanks Milo and Aaron! You guys did great too :thumb:

I don't like the SF Growth very much, I find that if I'm not Swallowing Up then I'm in a worse position but I can definitely see how it helps. I prefer two level X for the SP match up because I hate relying on only one Healing Growth per turn. Two Tangrowth X in play also gets people worried. if they can't one shot something there is a really good chance you can heal it all up.

Vespiqueen is actually a really good idea and I feel dumb for not thinking about it. I may try and squeeze that in!

Level Max... I have a love/hate relationship. My deck at States used level Max and I absolutely hated the Gengar matchup.

Hey no problem, everyone is different.

Anyways good job!

Wow! That is SUPER COOL! Youy made top 32 with Tangrowth and TBh you probably could've done much better, granted you didn't run into Blaziken the first round!

Gratz on an awesome showing with a seriously cool deck

Sexy Joe!! So good with a Rogue deck!! Glad you made TC.. too bad you hit Blaze!! Still T32 with Growth.. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!

Wow, that's amazing. Seems like you would have gone even further had you missed the Blaziken! What was the Miasma Valley for?

Miasma Valley is for larger HP pokemon decks like Tyranitar/Magnezone/Machamp/Things that I can't normally swallow up for knockout immediately. Getting some damage on them before they can evolve really helps the deck.

Thanks Fish!! :D
