Tentacruel vs Unown G

Hi, can i use Tentacruel's Tentacle Strike attack against a Pokémon with Unown G equiped??.

The attack searchs for up to 2 energys in the discard pile, you attach it to an opponent's pokémon and does 20 damage for each energy attached this way..

Since you can't attach energy that way (it would be an effect), you can't do any damage either because the damage is dependant on the attachment.
