Top 16 Canadian Nats MUK VILEPLUME

So for the first time in ... ever, I came up with a deck based off of some of Curtis' ideas and we were ready by Thursday instead of at 4 am the night before nats. We were pretty confident of the matchup against what we saw as being popular decks in the meta: Magneboar, Donchamp, Reshiboar, etc. Our Zekrom matchup was by far the worst, but we banked on the Donchamps making short work of them in the early rounds.

The group consisting of Geneses, Curtis, myself, Juan Carlos, and Caleb (our newest member) gathered and practiced at Curtis' place the day before nats. Missing in action from the group was Bidier who chose labs, exams, 3 hour lectures over us. What a champ.

Anyways, Geneses, myself, and Curtis along with a couple of seniors Chris V and Boyce F played Yanmega/Vileplume/Mew/Jumpluff/Muk.

Onto the day 1:

Round 1 vs. Michael G. Donphan/Zekrom

I had a cleffa start vs. his phanpy start. He called the dice roll but the judge passing by made us reroll since our basics weren't down yet. My opponent wasn't too happy about that since we both only had one basic anyways but I called the reroll and proceeded to go first. I drew into collector and saw off a Muk using Mew. Opponent started setting up his activte phanpy for the next turn Donphan. I had the twins in my hand so I just evolved into a couple of Yanmegas and a gloom and saw off a Jumpluff. The Donphan surely came, and he Prof Oaked for a new hand and started setting up more donphans. I activated the twins, got my vileplume out and started swarming with Mews. I pulled up a Zekrom on the bench with Mew and poisoned and confused it. My opponent played down a DCE on his turn, retreated his zekrom and KOed another one of my Mews. The DCE was a bit of a surprise, but I considered the possibility and with only 2 Mews left and no way of recovering them I had to be careful. He evolved into another Donphan on his previous turn so I decided the best way is to try to snipe around it so I dragged up a fresh donphan and poisoned and confused it. He started setting up the bench and neglected attaching energy to his active to retreat since he thought he could still use switch. I pointed at the vileplume and began sniping around the Donphan. I left the active Donphan with 10 Hp left incase he does pull a DCE to retreat it and I can just pull it up for an easy KO. His energies started dwindling and before long I took the rest of my prizes. Nice guy and great game!

Round 2 vs. Sebastian S. Kingdra/Cincinno

I played Sebastian a number of times in a lot of events so it was just another one of those games. He called the dice roll and started with a horsea and a mincinno. He attached an energy, played collector to fill his bench and hit me for 10. I had 2 Mews on my board and I had the energy to see off, along with a collector candy and yanmega in my hand. I collectored for the yanma oddish and another yanma before proceeding to see off a Jumpluff. I knew it was going to be a prize trading game so it was good that I got the jumpluff out turn 1 but if he got the kingdra or cincinno next turn he would take the prize lead. He missed the cinncino the turn after and evolved into a seadra on his bench before hitting me for 10 again. I rare candy into a plume, evolve into mega, and judge him. I mass attacked for the knock out and he found himself energy stranded for 3 turns. I picked off the rest of his bench and by the time he got his energy I was up 4 prizes to 2. We traded off until he realized he couldn't keep up and scooped. Nice game as always!

Round 3 vs. Julian W. Yanmega/Zone

Unfortunate I had to face Julian so early, but it was bound to happen. I actually expected him to lose a lot so I wouldn't have to face him but I guess he got better at the game  We joke a bit before the round starts and I call the dice roll and go first. I have a Mew start with nothing on my bench. My hand is actually pretty bad and I contemplate between Copycat and Judge. He has 2 mites on his board and after a short debate, I decided to judge him. He breathes a sigh of relief as he had a garbage hand. I draw into more of nothing, bench a cleffa and send off a muk. Julian sees it and laughs =.=. With me completely thinking he's playing a magenboar list I quickly find yanmas and a tyrogue flooding the board and I knew he didn't run the boar. With only 2 cards in his hand he opts to just hit me for 30 instead of eeking. I figured he had something good in his hand, so I judged him again and began setting up an oddish. He somehow gets a candy zone, and magneton in his hand AND a yanmega before magdrawing for 6. Probably stacked his deck or something. And of course he wakes up with Tyrogue and KOs my Mew and goes back to sleep =.=. I manage to get a up a gloom and I decided to pull out his zone and poison and confuse it. Of course he gets another zone set up and magdraws into a reversal, bringing up my gloom, playing a switch and blowing it up with a lostburn. It went downhill from there as I couldn't manage to get the trainer lock up. I scooped a bit later. Good game buddy. .... oh yea he during the game, he tried to rare candy into a magneton and I kept telling him he couldn't do that, but he kept insisting he could thinking that I was joking with him. The guy next to use overheard our bickering and settled it for us XD. The kid just won't believe me sometimes.

Round 4 vs. Kevin B. T-tar/Umbreon/Mandibuzz

Oh boy. This was a bad matchup for me, and I was trying to figure out a way out. If an umbreon came up it coulda tanked my whole deck except for oddish and gloom XD. I sent off a Muk as soon as I could, and pulled up the umbreon before he came out. He tried to attack with moonlight fang and hit tails for confusion. I knocked it out the turn after. He eventually got a Ttar set up, so I pulled a fresh one up and left it poisoned and confused while getting my plume out the same turn. I sniped around it the rest of the game and he hit a couple of heads for confusion to spread the 20 but it was too late. It's always a pleasure playing you Kevin. Great game.

Round 5 vs. Dexter P. Magneboar

I never faced Dexter before, but I knew that he finished high in a lot of events so this was going to be a tough match even if he was playing a favorable matchup for me. We started the game, and I had a mew prime and oddish bench vs. his tepig start. I set up a turn 2 vileplume rather quickly, and began pulling up his pignite. In all honesty I probably should have waited until he evolved into a emboar but I was pretty set up on my board that I could take a chance with him deciding to evolve into bad boar or the other one. If he chose bad boar he could KO my mew but lose his energy acceleration and if he chose the other one he could accelerate the bench and possibly retreat. He decided to go for the bad boar and KO my Mew. I returned KO via leafguard/mass attack combo and he was left with just mites. At one point he paralyzed my yanmega 3 times with thundershock and KOed it the turn after with a mischievous punch :( lol. After that bit of fun he scooped. Good game Dexter.

Round 6 vs. Charles D. Donphan/Weavile/Yanmega

My friend Curtis faced him in Montreal top cut as well as Ontario top cut back for provincials so I was excited to have a chance to face him as well. Unfortunately I started with cleff with an oddish bench and missed the dice roll =(. He judged first turn and KOed my cleffa with tyrogue. It was done after that.

Round 7 vs. Mike L. Donphan/Cinncion/Yanmega

I started strong with turn 2 vileplume and even though he managed 3 energies on his Donphan, I was able to drag and snipe his bench while he was locked up there for a couple of turns. It came close when we started trading prizes with Cinncino and mass attack, but damaged babies on his side via Earthquakes caught up to him as he couldn't attack with Donphan or else he would KO 2 of his babies and give me the win. He did it anyways since he knew it was over =P. Great game.

So I finish 5-2 and make top cut at 11. Curtis drops at 5-2 since he wasn't confident in the matchups in top cut (2 Zekroms and 3 Yanmega/Zones along with 1 KingdraYanmega) Juan finishes 5-2 and makes cut while Caleb and Geneses miss cut due to losing their last rounds. The three seniors that I teach finish 6-0 (Boyce F.), 5-1 (Andrew E. losing only to Boyce) and Chris V. 4-1 drop to preserve ranking invite. The two juniors that I helped Ethan P. and Justin L finished 6-0 and 5-1 respectively I believe. I find out I'm facing Sebastian and Juan finds out he's facing Andrew V both playing Yanmega/Zone. Not something we were particularly happy about but we talked about the matchup a bit over dinner and decided that our best chance at winning is calling the dice roll and setting up the plume before they can snipe our oddish. So there was our game plan:... dice calling.

Day 2

Top 16 vs. Sebastian C. Yanmega/Zone

Before the match starts, there was some sleeving issue with our decks but it was a brand new Lucario sleeve pack that I was using so I didn't know what the problem was. I was being shown marked cards, but there was no pattern to the cards and heck I couldn't even tell where the judge was pointing at that made it marked. In the end, Sebastian and I didn't have to resleeve and we began shuffling and setting up.

Game 1:
I look at my opening hand and see a lone cleffa. I definitely had to call the dice roll or this was going to be a quick game. So here we go, last nights strategy to win... I call heads... and it lands tails. I tell him I wanna go first game 2 before we even flip over and he knows what it is. He shoots down the energy on his mite and plays collector, and I just await to see if the little punching machine is prized. It's not, Good game.

Game 2:
I go first, and see that I have a really good hand. I see off first turn a jumpluff while filling my bench with an oddish yanma and another Mew. Turn 2 I rare candy into the vileplume and began leaf guarding some babies. He struggles to get set up and when his yanmegas are finally up he begins sniping my vileplume. I opt to snipe a bench magneton after a judge instead of hitting the active and he decides to promote it up and go for a tri attack since he coudln't match my hand size with yanmega. He does evenetually get the plume out of play via linear attack, but I was too far ahead by that point. He tried to seeker rotate his yanmegas which gave him a couple of prizes, but in the end it was too much to come back from. Good game.

Game 3:
He opts to go first (of course) and sets up a turn 2 Yanmega. I decide to hold onto the lone oddish in my hand and play a collector the turn after to search for my other oddish so I can play them both down at the same time to prevent both of them from being sniped. Go figure, my other oddish is prized. He begins stacking energy onto his zone ( had 6 on it at one point) and I was too far behind to come back. I scoop soon after. Nice game, wish it didn't have to come down to a dice roll =P.

That ends my day. Juan makes it past Top 16 but loses in Top 8 against Reed who eventually comes in second. Andrew E. wins seniors, Ethan wins Juniors.

Lastly, during the tournament the two times my friend Bidier texted me saying good luck lead to me being donked =P. Same thing happened to Julian. Coincidence? Nah he's just bad luck XD. Kidding buddy.

REED was a big part of the testing (RedShark nights) and was a huge support with deck building and getting the ideas flowing. Now if only he used Lucario sleeves..........

Good job Koo!

It's too bad that dice rolls are deciding games. I love the originality that the crew had in terms of your deck.

Actually:

Errata

The following cards now have new official text, some of which is very different from previous versions.
When using the following cards, always use this text to determine their effects:

Rare Candy
Choose 1 of your Basic Pokémon in play. If you have a Stage 2 card in your hand that evolves from that Pokémon, put that card on the Basic Pokémon. (This counts as evolving that Pokémon.)
You can't use this card during your first turn or on a Basic Pokémon that was put into play this turn.

You can read all the errata here if you like.

Come on Julian ... I told you about the rare candy errata when it changed.

that's right apologize to me! I'm pretty sure you read the card while we were playing and the guy next to you told you it was errataed. Believing strangers over your friends now. =P

I heard Boyce got DQ-ed in Top 4. True? If so Why?

I don't think Boyce or anybody for that matter would like their personal business to be discussed on a public forum without permission so I won't be answering your question, sorry.

No love? :( My deck was 90% your monstrosity - anyways, nice job again. I'm sorry you didn't make it to the end (you deserved it) - you will next time.

great job! Your deck is pretty good, if you go to worlds, dont share this deck! So then, no one will make a tech, and there will be no mirror matches! So keep the "certain cards" a secret to ur self. Haha lol any way you should've made it much farther, too bad for these new rule changes, : /
