Top 5 Favorite Songs

List your top 5 favorite songs and WHY they are your favorite. It took me a solid ten minutes to finalize my list, but it's peculiar to me because it's mostly early songs I've heard that shaped my musical taste.
Although I have hundreds upon hundreds of albums now (around 10,000 songs), these early songs and music shaped my taste and still shape my taste even now.

In no order:
Modest Mouse's "Trailer Trash"- Describes this weird college-aged psyche one develops. After going to college, I still think about dropping out and just getting a horrible job and living out my life simply. It's like teetering between depression, hopelessness, and accepting one's lots and shortcomings and not knowing whether to move on with them or leave everything behind. Awesome band, awesome song.

Beatles' "Across the Universe"- Jai Guru Deva Om. I give thanks to the heavenly teacher...
This is an asbolutely moving song. It's so powerful. I can't think of anyone being able to listen to it and not being moved to a more stable and serene place.

Smashing Pumpkins' "Mayonaise"- Cleverly blends acoustic and electric rock. Slow-paced, and fast-moving, Billy Corgan sings of himself in that perfectly angsty and sad way he does. We're alone in our thoughts, and it's always difficult to explain our emotions. You can learn that in philosophy of language and in this song.

Broken Social Scene's "KC Accidental"- The perfect "opening song" of any album I've yet heard. It has the nice progressions and melody changes that makes it both a typical opening song, but one that stands alone. It's also an allusion to K.C. Accidental, whom BSS was born from. Indeterminable lyrics (like always) and this powerful guitar movement makes this an awesome song for me.

Blink 182's "Dammit"- This song literally got me into music. In 5th grade my cousin brought this cd over, and it was so scratched that only this song played. I listened to it dozens of times, and it was the perfect song to get me into music. From there I got into punk, then metal, then electronic, then indie rock- and now I have a more developed taste than almost anyone I know... all thanks to this one song.

This is a good oppurtunity to evaluate what songs you like, why you like them, and how your favorite songs shape your musical tastes(even your old favorite songs). I know I spend a lot of time on and with music, so I'm sure you all do too.

Cascada - Everytime we touch:

Lets be honest , if you have heard this song it's got great lyrics and a great beat to it. It is overall smooth listening.

Eve 6 - Here's to the Night:

This is a GREAT song. Once again I love the lyrics and the general beat of the song. And Eve 6 were original.

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight , Tonight:

Um , this was the first Music Video I EVER saw. It got me started watching alot of videos. Either way this song is an INSTANT classic.

Daughtry - Over you:

Nuff said

The All American Rejects - It Ends Tonight:

Another song that I absolutly LOVE the lyrics to. "When Darkness turns to light... It ends tonight"

No way I can do this in order, and I'm not sure this list is even what I wanna use. I can listen to a song and LOVE it, then in a couple of months I'll hate it, only to go back to loving and appreciating it more...but this is what I came up with.

Outkast - "B.O.B"
This is the song that really converted me to hip-hop. I had heard lots of hip-hop before this, and a couple of Outkast songs I'm sure, but B.O.B. is such an outstanding song. The composition, the lyrics (if you can catch them)...amazing. To this day, I'll throw it on if I just wanna go crazy.

Jimi Hendrix- "All Along The Watchtower"
Originally, I was gonna put "The Wind Cries Mary" here, but I think I still like this song better. I'm biased toward higher energy songs, and this is definitely one of those. I really wish I could have seen Hendrix play live :(:(:(

Talib Kweli- "Beautiful Struggle"
I probably could've listed 5 songs by either Talib Kweli or Outkast and not be too far off. This is the title track from his 2004 solo album, and listening to it always leaves me with an inspiration to write something of my own. Everything about this song is on point, and I haven't gotten the least bit tired of it after 2+ years.

Mos Def- "U R the One"
Mos starts the song off by saying "I know more than a few's gonna relate." He was pretty right. I first heard this song RIGHT after I had gotten in touch with an ex-girlfriend from a few years ago and I related HARD. It's like he read my mind writing it.

Talib Kweli- "Too Late"
I was having a struggle listing a fifth song because there are so many that I just flat out like, or think they're so well written. I think the instrumental to this song is amazing, one of my top 5 hip-hop instrumentals ever. The repetitive chorus with the old-schoolish verses make this one great. This actually wasn't one of my favorite Kweli songs until I saw him perform it live, then it skyrocketed.

Very nice topic.

hmmmm.....in no order:
Into The Ocean-Blue October.
This song has a nice melody and lyrics, and the way it's made is cool

It Ends Tonight- All American-Rejects
Need I say more? Nice lyrics/melody/beat.

When You Were Young- The Killers
A cool melody, lyrics, and a good sond to it.

Good Riddance- Green Day
great lyrics/beat/melody/violin solo

Lose Yourself- Eminem
good lyrics, beat, melody.

if it were a Top 10, then I would've posted more songs.

I really can't choose 5. It's really either about 2, or a library. Here's what I've got

U2 -- One -- Live version (might be called acoustic)
This is, quite simply, the most perfect version of any song ever created. It starts very simply, just a slow electric guitar and Bono's low voice. Second verse, Bono shoots into a higher pitch, no additional background music. Initial chorus, a couple violins accompany the guitar. Third verse, it just keeps escalating. All the way to the end of the song. Best thing about this song: no hard drum line.

AC/DC -- Back In Black
This is the only song that I can listen to at full volume on my MP3 player. Rawk so hard, it's not even funny. It doesn't matter that the song is pointless, it's just good fun.

Elton John and Billy Joel -- Benny and the Jets -- Live from Tokyo
I had a hard time picking between all of the songs these guys have done. However, this is, I think, the most musically perfect song that either one has done. I love the 5 minute "battling pianos" section they tossed in there.

Queen -- The Prophet's Song
So many elements to this song, it almost makes Bohemian Rhapsody seem simple in comparison. I mean, c'mon! You've got a singer leading a 14 part harmony with himself. One of the more spectacular experiments by one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Clapton -- Layla -- either version
The electric version has one of the greatest riffs of all time, plus (if anybody would care to listen to the song that long) one of the best piano instrumentals I've ever heard. The acoustic version just makes listening to the electric version all the much sweeter. This is the only song that I've ever heard that sounded almost perfect in BOTH its electric AND acoustic versions.

Can't think of T5, but here are some of my fav's

Emenim- Lose yourself
Very inspiring song. You don't get that from rap.

Greenday- Holiday
Nice, upbeat song. The lyrics were only ok, but they can't all be winners

MCR- Welcome to the Black Parade
I thought MCR was just like, heavy death metal until I listened to this song. I still need to get more of them...

All American Rejects- Move Along
Move Along>It Ends Tonight. IET sounded rather u n-coordinated imo, but it was a good song nonetheless.

Joan Baez- Railroad boy
I don't like Joan Baez's songs, they are just soooo deppresing I thought I would put it in the T5.
Just a warning to everyone with happiness in them, don't listen to this song. Please.

Look: the rules of the board are VERY clear.

Polls are NOT allowed....and posting just a LIST of your 'favorite' songs turns what was a very well thought out original post and mainly equally well-written replies into a poll topic.

If you can't make the effort to list your REASONS for choosing what you do as instructed in the original post, then please DON'T POST.

Ryan started a good topic, and I for one would hate to see it locked because some people are too lazy to follow both the instructions in the first post AND the board rules.

In order to keep the thread open, I'm DELETING replies which only list song names/artists without any explanation. If you want to repost correctly by making the effort to explain your choices, feel free.

Do we have to stay in the pop/rock idiom or can we dip into classical/vocal/orchestral selections? because about three of mine would slip easily into the latter listed class (even though they're 20th Century works).

1.Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja- Lost prophets
it has a great beat and good lyrics.Got me into Naruto because of an AMV.

2.The after dinner payback- From Autumn to Ashes
I dont like screaming music that much but he is really good at doing it.And for some reason it makes me want to keep listening to it

3.Walls- emery
Its just to hot to comment ;)

4.Welcome to the Black Parade-MCR
i like the lyrics and MCR.

5.Either Through the Fire and the Flames-Dragon Force or Kingdom Hearts 2 theme song
i like dragon force but then i like the KH2 song i cant decide they r just too good :(

ANY songs. Just challenging you all to see what your musical roots are, and why your tastes are the way they are right now.

Tonight, Tonight is a SUPERB video. It won MTV's video of the year when it was released, in fact.

not in any order

1. "bittersweet symphony" by the verve - nice melody, and lyrics are different.

2. "iris" by the goo goo dolls - again very nice melody, and lyrics.

3. "fix you" by coldplay - nice melodies just get me.

4. "turn it again" by red hot chili peppers - love the solo at the end.

5. "siempre" by la ley - spanish song with nice rock melody.

Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers - BloodSugarSexMagik - 1991
-Coming from my favorite band, probably one of the few rock songs that really clutches your heart; after reading part of Scar Tissue I realized how meaningful music can be.

B.O.B. [REMIX] - OutKast Vs. RATM - Stankonia [REMIX] - 2000
-Probably the only rap song I truly enjoy (though OutKast as a whole is quite ingenious), mixing an upbeat rock rhythm with rap is very entertaining.

Ninjascape [REMIX] - Ashane Vs. OCREMIX - N/A - N/A
-The best guitar solo I've ever heard; Ninjascape is an ingenious experience, this song is good for sports vids, video games, anything. I love it.

Nearly ANY other RHCP song is amazing to me, their songs are just soo good <333

Good topic...and VERY damn hard to choose, as my 'favorites' change constantly depending upon my moods, etc. At least right now at this present moment, I'd have to say mine, in no particular order, are:

Fred Hersch Ensemble: "After the Dazzle of Day" from Leaves of Grass; Kurt Elling, lead vocalist.

I first heard about this in a piece on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross and immediately went out to buy the CD. The song cycle is 20 of Walt Whitman's poems from "Leaves of Grass" set to music for a 10 piece (8 instruments, 1 male and 1 female vocalist) ensemble...and is just an amazing piece of work, mixing jazz and chamber music into something completely unique. Elling is an _outstanding_ vocalist: his diction is IMPECCABLE, and one can understand each and every word of the poetry he sings. How I'd have loved to have been able to see this performed live when the ensemble toured...

After the dazzle of day is done,
Only the dark, dark night shows to my eyes the stars;
After the clangor of organ majestic, or chorus, or perfect band,
Silent, athwart my soul, moves the symphony true.

David Sylvian: "Nostalgia", from Brilliant Trees

Talk about evoking a mood: the marriage of lyric and music is just about perfect...the spareness of the arrangement, Jon Hassell's trumpet, Sylvian's vocal. A very close second is the song "Ride", originally written for Secrets of the Beehive but not completed until it was included on the Everything and Nothing compilation; it's another perfect combo of vocal and instrumental arrangement...

Voices heard in fields of green
Their joy their calm and luxury
Are lost within the wanderings of my mind
I'm cutting branches from the trees
Shaped by years of memories
To exorcise their ghosts from inside of me
The sound of waves in a pool of water
I'm drowning in my nostalgia...

Tower of Power: "Time Will Tell", from Back to Oakland

The Tower is the BEST LIVE BAND IN THE WORLD, HANDS DOWN. If you are a brass player of _any_ ability, you _know_ about the TOP horn section: they are so tight, it HURTS. They've been around for close to 40 years, and still put on a **** of a show; we see them every year when they come to San Diego. Romantic ballads and kick-out-teh-jams FUNK, they can do it ALL; check out THIS performance from this past summer, which is the same lineup we saw in September here. This ballad is one of my favorites, and the live performance I saw of it moved me to tears; Larry Braggs is an AMAZING vocalist:

It’s a rare occasion
When your plans and expectations
Come down just exactly how you planned them
Hey life’s just that way
You better face the facts sweet lady
Things change from day to day
It all depends upon the situation
Who can say, anyway?

Time will tell
And we’ll both know so very well
Time will tell

So just be patient
Until you reach the realization
You can’t have joy without a little sadness too
That’s just the way it is
And girl I believe we’re gonna make it
With nothing but our share of ups and downs
You can’t expect life to be a total paradise
But if we just stay together girl that would be so nice

Time will tell
And we’ll both know so very well
Time will tell

DAC Crowell: "Umi no Kami ni Kansha", from The Sea and the Sky

The artist is a good friend of mine, and this piece has special meaning as it's one I was peripherally involved in when still being created...we discussed it endlessly, and I helped with the phrasing of the Japanese for the title, heard the first live radio performance via netstream, and did the graphic design for the cds. Call it ambient, space music, indescribable...it's completely unique, and full of symbolism on many levels. The link above will take you to the online label album page where you can listen to the piece in its entirety should you desire...

Kate Bush: 'Hello Earth' (from "The Ninth Wave"), from Hounds of Love

Another song-cycle, which originally took up side two of the (vinyl) album. Though Hounds of Love's best known track is "Running Up That Hill", "Hello Earth" is my particular favorite. It's just a lovely piece, both melody and lyric imagery...hard to believe this album's over 20 years old as it still sounds as fresh and original as it did back then...

Hello, Earth.
Hello, Earth.
With just one hand held up high
I can blot you out,
Out of sight.

Peek-a-boo,
Peek-a-boo, little Earth.
With just my heart and my mind
I can be driving,
Driving home,
And you asleep
On the seat.

I get out of my car,
Step into the night
And look up at the sky.
And there's something bright,
Travelling fast.
Look at it go!
Look at it go!

[A men's choral passage in either Czekh or Russian is sung here.]

("Listen!")
Watching storms
Start to form
Over America.
Can't do anything.
Just watch them swing
With the wind
Out to sea.

All you sailors,
("Get out of the waves! Get out of the water!")
All life-savers,
("Get out of the waves! Get out of the water!")
All you cruisers,
("Get out of the waves! Get out of the water!")
All you fishermen,
Head for home.

Go to sleep, little Earth.
I was there at the birth,
Out of the cloudburst,
The head of the tempest.
Murderer!
Murder of calm.
Why did I go?
Why did I go?

[The men's choral passage is sung again several times here.]

"Tiefer, tiefer.
Irgendwo in der Tiefe
Gibt es ein licht."

Go to sleep little Earth.

There's so much more I could add: Broadway musicals, classical music, Japanese folk, enka, and anime music, Hawaiian music, pop, rock, soul...if it's not obvious, music is a huge part of my life :)

I actually inspired Ryan to do this out of sheer boredom the other night. I'm glad its made for such a good gym thread.

IN ORDER

5. All Along The Watchtower - Bob Dylan. Bolt mentioned Hendrix's version of this Dylan classic, (great list, btw bolt) but few people realize that Bob Dylan wrote it first. Using just three chords, Dylan creates one of my favorite melodies of all time.

4. Gimme Gimme Gimme - Black Flag Black Flag is the band that forever shaped my outlook on life. I'll never forget the day that I went to my friend Alex's house after being let out of school early because of snow. I had just started playing bass guitar, alex had just started on the guitar. Having nothing better to do, we started playing the only song we both knew how. Not 1/4 of the way through the song Alex's older brother Jeff stopped us, and told us he wanted to listen to real music. He turned the volume knob to 11, and my ears were flooded with the attitude and style that I wanted to live. Black Flag has forever been my favorite band since that day.

3. Start Today - Gorilla Biscuits Essentially, this song made me a man. I was 13, and I was quite proud of being disrespectful, obnoxious, and an overall smartypants. I was doing quite poorly in school, and I made my Mom incredibly dissapointed in me. I didnt know how to feel, so I spent some time in my room, just listening to music and thinking. This song came on and I listened to every word. Like it was the gospel.

"My room's a mess and I can't get dressed.
I gotta be out by eight o'clock.
Deep inside I know the answer.
Well there's no time like the present
And I'd like to hang out but who doesn't.
I've made enough mistakes for this lifetime.
Now I'm here to make amends.

This time I'll try,
For the first time in my life.
It won't pass me by.
Procrastinate it can wait, I put it off.
Start today."

2. Off Broadway - Every Time I Die Musically, this song strikes every chord in my brain. It has most every aspect of a good song in my mind. The tempo is ever changing, abrupt and deliberate. The rhythm is different, yet hypnotic. The lyrical content is epic, and full of amazing imagery. I can say this without hesitation, I will never be tired of hearing this song

1. When The Levvee Breaks - Led Zeppelin Led Zep needs no introduction. Off the bat, the drums are driving and focal to the song. The guitar work is stylized and raw and deep. The vocals are soulful and honest. The harmonica solo is INCREDIBLE. Just... just listen to it. Please.

In no order whatsoever.

Million Dollar Man - Kutless
This is a rock song from the Christian band Kutless. I really enjoy the way they use their guitars in their songs, with very cool melodies spritzed with short chords.(really the only way to describe that song)
The lyrics describe a rich man who has everything he evey wanted, but only wants now what he gave up to get his money. I find its an exeptional song. I would have liked it to be longer(only 2 verses plus chorus and such) but it's still an awesome track. This was my first intro to harder rock(which I prefer to soft rock).

Flights - Falling Up
Another great rock song. It is a very upbeat song, and I love the way they use driving chords to move the song forward at an amazing rate. The drumming is superb as well. I discovered this band from a demo my brother received when he got the Kutless CD, and ever since then, I have been a fan of their work.

Wow, this will be a hard list.

Failure to Excommunicate - Relient K
It starts off with an acustic(sp?) guitar, which is than joined by electrics to form a rising and lowering melody. In the background, other string instruments such as celos are heard building up to the main begining of the song. I love the lyrics, they are very gripping.

(another of Relient K's great songs is "Life After Death and Taxes")

Politicians - Switchfoot

This is one of my first favorite bands. It is another rock song(wow, what a surprise) With a driving drum beat in the beginning that leads up to a great verse-chorus combo.

Everything is broken
Everything is broken
Everything is breaking down, breaking down

Everything is bleeding
Everything is bleeding
Everything is breaking down, breaking down

A pledge allegiance to a country without borders, without politicians
Watching for my sky to get torn apart
We are broken, we are bitter
We're the problem, we're the politicians
Watching for our sky to get torn apart
C'mon and break me

(this is one of the few songs I can actually play on the drums)

Rebirthing - Skillet
This is one of the hardest rock songs I listen to. The song starts off with (I think) violins playing the main line of the song, but it builds up to a tremendus chorus with awesome guitar and drumming. The song is semi-screamy, but not too much(I have about 1 song that is totaly screamy, and I'm just now beginning to not mind listening to it, "ugly CD player that won't let me skip forward...")

I lie here paralytic
Inside this soul
Screaming for you till my throat is numb
I wanna break out
I need a way out
I don’t believe that it’s gotta be this way
The worst is the waiting
In this womb I’m suffocating

Feel your presence filling up my lungs with oxygen
I take you in
I’ve died
Rebirthing now
I wanna live for love wanna live for you and me
Breathe for the first time now
I come alive somehow
Rebirthing now
I Wanna live my life wanna give you everything
Breathe for the first time now
I come alive somehow

There are so many other songs I listen to, but can't list here. I don't just listen to Rock, either. I do like Rap, Hip-Hop, Metal(I don't know if it's really metal, but that's what Itunes says) Electronic, and Alternative(Switchfoot in Particular)

in order
5. My Plaugue - SLIPKNOT
this song has an angry, repetative beat, which is great for when i am already angry and need to work it out of my system
4. Breath - Breaking Benjamin
a song about love and loss that simply appeals to my mind and to my senses
3. Send Me An Angel - Zeromancer
very nice remix to the hit 80's song, while retaining the words and changing the beat to match a more modern day music taste. it has very nice rythem, and is just friggen awesome
2. Forget It - Breaking Benjamin
a sudo technorock song that simply describes the singers desire to be forgotten and fade away, very much matching my mood much of the time
and my favorite alltime song is...
Gone Away - The Offspring
everytime i hear this song i nearly start crying. it just brings back so many sad memories...

wow...
i actually went along with the rules of this thread
very odd, gotta go spam somewhere

So incredibly difficult to choose a top 5...
BUT, we'll give it a go. These are five songs that just hit me every time I hear them.

In no order:

"The Dance" - Garth Brooks.
Yeah, I know, it's been overplayed to death. I'm sorta sick of hearing it on the radio, too. But man, if we look at production, lyrics, all the aspects of the song, added all up with what it meant for the artist and what the artist meant for the format and the industry? I don't think we'd be off base to call it one of the top four five most important country songs of all time.

"And I am glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go
My life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'dve had to miss the dance"

"Not Ready To Make Nice" by Dixie Chicks
There are a number of reasons why I love this song. First, it's a brilliant song. Second, I happen to agree that the Chicks were in the right. Lastly, I can personally relate, because the lyrics speak my situation with MCC over the illegal withdrawl of funding from the student press.

"And how in the world can the words I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter sayin' that I better just
Shut up and sing or my life will be over"

"Never Got To Paris" - by - I have no idea who the original artist is, I think a contemporary Christian group. My friend Halie, who is a singer, sent me a demo she made of this song...it was a one-take thing, she sent it with a bunch of stuff and she thougth it was crappy. It wasn't. Off all of the recording I've heard her on, even including her debut album, this is my favorite.

"So they never got to Paris
And found the cafe of their dreams
But their table holds a whole word of memories
No they never went to venice
Or strolled the streets of rome
But they built their worlds together and found the best
Of both"

"Painters" by Jewel (from pieces of You).
It was hard picking my favorite song of my favorite album, but this is just brilliance. It's a 7-minute story, basically. Whe Jewel wrote it, she didn't know about songwriting rules and hadn't yet been tainted by the industry and by "spit and shine". The result is seven minutes of uninhibited emotion.

"She ran through the orchards screaming 'damn you man don't leave me'
With nothing behind but these cold portraits these cold paintings
To remind me..."

"Right Now" by SR-71
Yeah, ok, I know...
But it's a fun song, full of energy, and it has so much attitude. I just love it. End of story.

"She clings to me like cellophane
Fake plastic submarine
Slowly driving me insane
But now that's over
So what if the [love] was great
Just a temporary escape
Another thing I grew to hate
But now that's over"

I'm going to hate myself in the morning for the obvious songs I've left off this list. It's just too hard to pick. I am pretty confidant in #1 and #2, though.

Haha Ryan, you're lucky. It took me longer to finalize my list :D

In no order...

Psycho-System of a Down

Not only was "Toxicity" full of great tracks, but it had my favorite SoaD tune ever: Psycho. Very much IN TUNE (something they can't say anymore...), very nice melodies/contrasts that compliment the emotion in the lyrics, and a very Middle Eastern-esque melody that kinda conveys emptiness

March of the Black Queen-Queen

When everybody looks at Queen's "suite"-esque tunes, nine out of ten will go with "Bohemian Rhapsody" as their favorite. However, MotBQ is much more complex in every way, from the instrumentals, to the very strong, fast-paced lyrics.

Nessun Dorma-Turandot

Turandot's just pretty awesome all-around, but this is really nice and peaceful. I got exposed to a lot of classical when I was a little kid, and Nessun Dorma still stands out :D

You Can Call Me Al-Paul Simon

What can I say...it's a very fun tune you can groove to.

Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)-Pink Floyd

Obligatory angst song.

Toughy.

I'd have to say:
(No order)

Ready to fall- by Rise Against
A rock song, about a guy who is about to jump off a roof.
The lead singers voice is really unique, kinda rough when it is right, but can be melow in the slow parts.

The He11 song- by Sum 41
Wow, Sum 41 is amazing. This song literaly got me into rock music.
The drumer is incredibly fast. The lead singers sings at the perfect mix of screaming and singing, and he is also one of the best soloist guitar players I have ever heard. Fast lyrics and quick playing makes this one of my favorite songs.

Animal I have Become- by Three Days Grace
Unbelievable, another rock song. Well ,I heard this song on a Naruto AMV, and was stunned.
The lyrics are deep, and kinda moody. The song flows really well with the bass guitar which is really the only melody the song has.

Breaking the Habit- by Linkin ParkWell, I'm going to St. Louis with one of my friends for a gym challenge, and he puts on Linkin Park.
I had no Idea who they were, but their music was really good. This song has a really good meaning, and can be applied to a lot of things in life. (Like not doing your homework, but instead choosing to try and break the format)

Dani California- By Red Hot Chile Pepers
It's named after Ness' girl friend, how can you not like this song?
Kinda of like a rap in rock form if that makes any since. They just say some random stuff and then go to the corus. RHCP have been around for a long time, but this is their best song IMO.
