Top 5 Favorite Songs

Kinda of like a rap in rock form if that makes any since.

Makes perfect sense - Rap-Rock is a recognized sub-genre.
See:
KidRock, Linkin Park, LimpBizkit, RHCP (not so much). There are tons of others, those are some of the more sccuesful ones over the past years

I pretty much live under a rock when it comes to music, but here's my top 5, not in any particular order:

Nelly Furtado "Te Busque"
I'm multicultral, so I like to listen to songs that are sang in different languages. Plus, I can relate to this song quite a lot.

Nickelback "Feeling Way too Damn Good"
This was the first music video I saw and this song made Nickelback my favorite band. I never tire of this song.

Nickelback "If Everyone Cared"
This song reminds me so much of my "good old days." The lyrics blew me away when I first heard this song and it's also the most played song on my iPod.

Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc."
This is quite a unnique song. My friends love it when I imitate that high pitched "feel good" that's said repeatedly in the song.

All American Rejects "It Ends Tonight"
I really like the lyrics in this song and I really like the music video. My gf and I never get tired of listening to this song together.

Not in any order...
"Little Death" by (+44)
This songs lyrics seem to touch me and it is amazing to listen to. I got to see them the first time they played in atlanta and now they are coming back so i get to see them again.

"A Little's Enough" by Angels and Airwaves
This song is really really good and i could listen to this song for hours. I also got to see them the first time they came to atlanta and so far the only time theyve played here.

"The New Workout Plan" by Kanye West
Kanye is my favorite rapper and this song is just really fun to listen to and has an awsome beat.

"Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll" by The Killers
I've loved everysong by The Killers and they are my favorite band in the world besides Blink-182. I've seen them in concert and they are amazing to watch and i get to see them agian in april.

"Alive with the Glory of Love" by Say Anything
Say Anything is Amazing and very unique, i love their style and hope to see them in may.

Other bands i would have included if there was room... Taking Back Sunday, Underoath, Blink 182, Hot Hot Heat, Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie........

You look like you're right on the verge of delving into indie. If you want any band suggestions, IM me.

I'm really wishin' this was a little bit bigger when it comes to limit, but, eh, I'll deal. So, here's my favorite five (I've been meaning to get it in anyway).

"This Is Absolution" - Killswitch Engage
Just the background music of the song is what really caught me, but the lyrics were just sort of thrown in. What I mean is, it's not exactly that, that made the song. Anyway, I just love it because it can be a sort of uplifting sort of love song, and can give one determination I suppose one could say. Plus, It's hard not to like. And, the clean vocals just sound so great in this.

"Embrace The Gutter" - The Autumn Offering
Well, this is just a personal favorite of mine, simply because it's one of those that's easy to go along with. Hard to explain, as it doesn't seem to be much in the determination department. But, it's fast, heavy, and that's just how I've come to like it now.

"Love In Slow Motion" - Bleeding Through
This is a great song, combining gutterals and clean vocals. It's just one of those weird sort of love songs, but it's just as heavy as the other two listed. It's really about a man who wishes for the one he loved to come back to him. Hard not to like, IMO.

"Next In Line" - Children Of Bodom
A favorite of mine for some reasons. For one, when I'm in a good mood, I'm willing to take on a lot of different things, and this song basically can compliment with that mood, with some of it's lyrics about taking on everyone else. Plus, like the others, it's pretty fast, and can get one going.

"Redneck" - Lamb Of God
I've really come to like this song simply because it can describe some of my thoughts to other people. Though it's got some interesting choice of words, it gets the point across pretty quickly. A great song for anger, whenever in that sort of mood IMO.

Had I had the room, I probably would've had some Nickel Back on there, along with possibly 3 Doors Down, and some others...

Just about all of my permanent top 5 are Switchfoot.

"Faust, Midas, and Myself" -Switchfoot
Not really so much a song.
I really like singing it, though.
It's got an awesome message.
For anyone that doens't want to bother looking it up, he's talking about a dude who thought he wanted something, and when he got it (by means of the Devil) he realized he never wanted it.
He values what he does have.
And especially for one of the lines.
"You've one live, you've one life, you've one life left to lead."

"Meant to Live" -Switchfoot
Very rarely does Switchfoot release a good single.
Basically sums up the Human condition, and why it sux.
He sings about what the human race should've been.

"Happy is a Yuppie Word" -Switchfoot
I think I might've been sniffing something when I first heard this song.
It's just retarded, I mean, look at the title.
I don't know, I don't really like it, but it sux me in whenever I start to listen to them.
I was also reading a hella tight book when I listened to it, so it always reminds me of a scene in the book.

"Playing For Keeps" -Switchfoot
Out of all my 67 switchfoot songs, this is my all time favorite.
it's also my all time favorite song, with 87 times played on my ipod in a month.
It just plain old sounds cool.
The lyrics are on the backburner...
Although still important, the lyrics aren't why I regard this as so frikin' awesome.

"Learn to Fly' -Foo Fighters
Yes.
Foo Fighters are the best aside from Switchfoot.
I have the most music from them that I haven't gotten by ripping them from an album.
This song inspired me to write a 6 point essay (basically a 97%), earning me my best essay ever.
I think I was high at the time of hearing this as well.
It was in a Final Fantasy: Advent Children AMV on YouTube.

I'm doing a second five because I can't believe the stuff I forgot.

"Roll Me Away" - Bob Seger.
One of the greatest days of my life was the day I discovered Bob Seger. I love every song the man has ever recorded. This one is my favorite, because I think it captures a moment in time like few other songs. When you listen to this record, it's almost impossible not to want to get on your Harley and just go. And it doesn't hurt that it mentions my quasi-hometown (Macinac City)

"Best of You" by Foo Fighters
Sometimes an artist will cut a track and you hear it ad you just know that everyone on the team was perfect for those 4 minutes, from the singer, to the engineer, all the way down to the intern getting the band coffee. Believe me, I've been there. Most people don't realize how difficult it is to cut a world-class record, or how many people are creativley involved in the process. This song, everytime I hear it, I can't help but say to myself "wow" - because everyone hit te nail on te head. The mix, the mastering, the artistry, it's allincreible. And the vocals on this record are gut-wrenching and powerful.

"Back When We Were Beautiful" - by Matreca Burg. I can't believe I left this off my first list. This is probably the saddest song I've ever heard...but it's still, in it's own way, beautiful. I'll never forget watching the CMAs in 1996 (or 1997?) when, to close te show, Matreca, who was NOT a famous artist and has never had a hit of her own (even though she's writte many) came, sat on a stool in the middle of the stage, and delivered one of the most incredible performances I'll ever witness.

"I guess you had to be there
She said, you had to be
She handed me a yellow photograph
And then said, 'see'
This was my greatest love
My one and only love
And this is me
Back when we were beautiful
Beutiful, see

I don't feel very different
I know it's strage
I guess I've gotten used to
These little aches and pains
but I still love to dance
You know we used to dance
The night away
Back when we were beautiful
Beautiful, yeah

I hate it when they say
I'm aging gracefuly
I fight it every day
I guess they never see
I don't like this at all
What's happening to me
To me

But I really love my grandkids
She said, they're sweet to hold
They would have loved their grandpa
Those awful jokes he told
You know sometimes for a laugh
The two of us would act
Like we were old
Back when we were beautiful
Beautiful, yeah

But I guess you had to be there"

"Making Memories of Us by Keith Urban.
This song was written by Rodney Crowell, who is a KILLER writer, and I just think it's one of the best love songs ever. It's so simple, yet it sums up so much emotion.

"And I'll make you a promise
If there's life after this
I'll be there waiting for you
With a warm , wet kiss

And I'm gonna love you
Like nobody loves you
And I'll earn your trust
Making memories of us"

"Hat Full of Stars" by Cyndi lauper
Bottom line, amazing song.

I was folding up your letters
Unpacking winter clothes
Searching for my hat
I thought I left it by the door
So I tore around the room
Like a bird without a head
I saw your picture waving back at me
From underneath the bed
From a long, long time ago

When all I had
Was a hat full of stars
The one I'll always treasure
The one that you wore
You loved the look
But you never looked inside
You would have seen us there
You could've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars

I'm trying to live in the present
But I keep tripping on the past
Finding out reality, well clarity
Comes in dribs and drabs
No we never had the time
For everything we had
So it felt like we had nothing
That's what makes this hat so sad
It was a long, long time ago

When all we had
Was a hat full of stars...
...You would have seen us there
You could've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars

Now whenever I'm alone
And I think I might forget
I wear my lucky hat
Just like a crown up on my head -
'Cause all I have
Is a hat full of stars...
If you could see me now
You would've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars...

You look like you're right on the verge of delving into indie. If you want any band suggestions, IM me.

Just remember that there are three main reasons an act is "indie"

1) They are fringe, which means they will appeal to a smaller audience
2) They are undiscovered (this isn't usualy the case)
3) They are just not that good

Most of the time, it's #3

Trust me, I listen a TON of indie rock and a bit of country (the country is terrible, the rokc is ok). But I listen to it because it's something I haven't heard...because I literaly listen to almost everything the major drop.

if you're listning to so much music it's getting boring, indie can be a nice diversion.

But hopefuly you don't become one of those people that just listens to indie because they think mainstream music "isn't cool" or "has no value". JMO,

And Ryan, I'm not coming down on you, just pointing out my feeling about indie.

And Ryan, I'm not coming down on you, just pointing out my feeling about indie.

I won't disagree. I usually have to go through 10 bands before I find anything worth listening to. But if you find the right sources for what's next to listen to... you can usually hit a good track. A lot of indie artists have branching family trees, and artists connect and work with each other. An artist's previous band, their solo project, etc. are good ways to find music that is *probably* worth listening to.

I agree though. Chances are if a band isn't signed it's because they're not good. That's the case for most music. It takes a LOT of work to find good, new music.

I like mainstream music =P Just not most mainstream rock. I *love* mainstream rap. One of my favorite things to listen to. Just most popular rock is so awful... I can't stand it. If I want to listen to something catchy or that has good hooks- I'll stick to rap. They have MUCH catchier and better stuff to listen to. There are no redeeming qualities in bands like Panic! At the Disco or Fallout Boy, etc.

My indie search began with a few core bands. From there, I looked at bands the members were apart of other than the original band. From there, I looked at collaborations, looked at "similar sounding bands" via music engines or suggestions. After that came a label hunt, if I find a good band and they're on an independent label, a lot of other bands on the label will have some positive merits.

At the very least indie rock has (or ideally has) the quality of originality or creativity. They try to do something new, or take something different. Most mainstream rock is simply formulaic. One band will break out and there come many other similar sounding bands that ride the wave.

If you look at my favorite songs, 4/5 of them are extremely mainstream. The Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Blink 182- far from indie =P

The worst thing you can do is become an "indie elitist". A reason to even get INTO indie music is to keep an open mind. When you fall into the trap of being elitist for no reason, you enter the same closedmindedness you sought to escape by getting into indie.

With time, effort, and an open mind- you can find a lot of new, interesting, and GOOD music with indie rock.

I'm also not much of a country fan. I prefer bluegrass or folk to popular country.

The problem I have with that Wikipedia entry is that it offers every possible viewpoint on what ther "indie" might mean regardless of whether or not there's really any basis for that other than a handful of people.

It's too much unfocused information.

And that's one major flaw with Wikipedia....people edit it, but no one edits it.

The term "indie" has one definition "within music and the music scene." I have no doubt that people who have no exposure to the industry use it imporoperly, or have changed the usage.

FYI, that Wikipedi entry has a NUMBER of errors. Some of my favorites:

"On the other hand, major labels are able to offer artists advances in the range of $150,000-$300,000"

What? Where did they get that number?
Ummm....no.
In an industry where the label is almost guaranteed to lose money (they have to sell 350,000 records to break even), you're not going to get that kind of an advance.

You're getting an advance in the form of the recoupable money they're putting into your production and PPM (Promotion, Publicity, Marketing).

"Indie artists are concerned more with self-expression than commercial considerations "

What that actually means is the indie acts, most of the time, get to hold themselves to a lower standard. They don't have to please nearly as many people before the record even comes out.

To say that major label acts are not concerned with self-expression or artistry show that whomever wrote the article is a pundit or a fan and has never actually worked around and major label acts.

Also,
I really think the entire paragraph on publishing should be pulled. First, indie acts almost NEVER get radio airplay, not enough to make a substantial financial impact. Second, most small venues they play live shows at are probably not in PRO compliance, and, again, those acts are going to make more money from the show revenue than from the royalties, even if the venue IS in compliance. Not to mention that the implication that "maybe no one will go to the show" is stupid, because the artist is probably getting an upfront fee, regardless of their draw (although they make also take a percentage of the door).

And I guess I generally disagree that "indie" has anything to do with sound. But I bring an industry perspective to that comment.

A Day in The Life - The Beatles
This song is just sooo eeeeiry yet so relaxxing first time I heard this was at a friends house before we went on some of our Journeys through Weston lol.

Rocket Man - Elton John
What to say? This song is just great ^^

Hardcore Vibes - Dj Rabbit ( Local DJ )
Crazy song every time I've been out to a rave/party with him and he plays this song the entire dance floor erupts : )

Waves - Dj Satomi
Fun fast paced song that makes me feel all happy inside when ever I listen to it. First song that got me into EDM ( Electronic Dance Music )

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
In my opinion one of the best ways to unwind after a hard HARD night of partying, nothing like laying back and listening to some Pink Floyd.

World So Cold - Mudvayne
My favorite song because you can just chill to it or let out some anger. Musically it showed a different side to mudvayne with the greatest bassist of all time Ryan Martini going with more of a jazz style bass.

When Darkness Falls - Killswitch Engage
This song is what started to get me into metal/death metal/hardcore style music very good vocals almost opera style vocals by Howard Jones.

Drive - Incubus
Even though I listen to alot of metal I also listen to indie/soft rock even rap. Incubus was the first concert I ever went to love this song when your just tired of the world and want to get away.

Forever - Throwdown
This summer was the best summer of my life and this song reminds me of summer whenever I hear it.
This song will always get me pumped up. Me and my buddy would play this every day and now whenever we hear it we just wanna mosh and just go crazy.

On Wings of Lead - Bleeding Through
The lyrics just get to me I love this song just lures you in soft and then kicks your *** everytime you hear it I love songs like that.

nothing was supposed to hurt like this.
missing you was always one more kiss.
now there's nothing that i can do.
one more nail in the coffin, and it's all for you.
always were and always were a simple love story.
you were everything i ever hoped and dreamed.
drown me in a pool of my blood.
it's getting harder just to breathe.
i'll suffocate you faster just so you can't see, so you can't see me sleep.
it's getting harder just to say the right things.
i've seen the angel's face, and i've heard her sing to me.
from my reflection on this razor blade,
i've heard ten thousand dying screams, and they're calling me.
the day will break on this saddest day, so don't let me wake.
i've heard this all before, and i've seen this over and over again.
don't let me wake.
drown me in a pool of my blood.

it's getting harder just to breathe.
i'll suffocate you faster just so you can't see, so you can't see me sleep.
so you can't see me sleep.
the day will break on this saddest day, so don't let me wake.
i've heard this all before, and i've seen this over and over again.
don't let me wake.
nothing was supposed to hurt like this.

Moza: It's them. It's the name of the band ;/

Just so you know, I'm not posting any lyrics since I'm too lazy to type 'em up ;p.

1. The Eagles: Hotel California
Considered by critics and fans alike, one of the Top 5 greatest songs EVER recorded and written. And I believe it. Amazing vocals by Don Henley, amazing guitar by Joe Walsh and Don Felder, just bottom line a.m.a.z.i.n.g.

2. The Eagles: Desperado
My favorite ballad. Again, great vocals by Don Henley. Also a great spread of lyrics; very nice. Not much else I can say.

3. The Charlie Daniels Band: The Devil Went Down To Georgia
I bet a lot of you are thinking "lolzers that's one of his favorites song :O:O:O!!11! LOL". I understand, since if you don't understand real country music, and the complexities of the fiddle (lol), then it's a really "wah?" song. But, I like it...a lot. A great fiddle playin' and hick-rap song. lol

4. Led Zeppelin: Stairway To Heaven
I'm normally not a large fan of theirs, since I don't really listen to harder rock/metal like them. But I love this song, and it has a great opening ;p.

5. The Eagles: Ol' 55
A smaller/lesser known song by them. But amazing vocals, split vocals btw, and musicianship. <3

I know...I'm an Eagles freak ;p.

All right. I'll bite, though I'll add the caveat that this is impossible to quantify, and that my actual top five favorite songs tend to be whatever were the last five on my iPod queue. But there are a few that stand out.

In no particular order:

"The Rainbow Connection": Jim Henson, as performed by Kermit the Frog.
Neither cool nor glamorous, never got any play on the radio, sung primarily by a muppet, this is nonetheless one of the most satisfying listens I've ever come across. The lyrics are perfect whimsy, and still more poignant than anything more "serious" artists have tried to come up with to prove their depth of feeling. Give me Kermit, a banjo, and a bog, and I'll make you feel a little better about your day. Among the artists who have covered it are Sarah Mclachlan, the Carpenters, Willie Nelson, and Judy Collins.

"Gentle on my Mind": John Hartford.
A sort of free-associative homage to the open road and the woman that welcomes you home from it. I think the piece is actually improved by its lack of a refrain, and it's one of those rare songs where the lyrical genius seems to play along with the notes, adding to the overall tapestry.

"The Ninth": Ludwig Van Beethoven.
I had the good fortune to be able to perform this with the Akron Symphony Orchestra, under the guest conduction of Gerhardt Schroeder. It is Beethoven's finest work, and perhaps his best known (for good reason). To listen to it is sublime, but to be a part of its recreation is magical. The fourth movement is a revelation to perform for a singer. No piece of music parts the clouds quite like this one, about 3 minutes 22 seconds into that final movement.

"ABC": The Jackson 5.
Some music, like the songs I've listed above, can be deeply moving. Other types can be angsty, or built to showcase a performer's vocal range. But some music, some of the greatest music, is written with the express purpose of having fun. I think this song embodies that spirit about as well as any. Does anyone turn this song off when they hear it on the radio? I doubt it.

"Linger": The Cranberries.
This one's probably distinct to me. Everyone, I imagine, has a song that just comes together for them. This is that song for me. The instrumental blend just hits my ear right, I guess, and I think Dolores O'Riordan nailed the mood perfectly. Sure, there are better composed songs, more meaningful lyrics, songs that have more impact (heck, if this were that kind of list, I'd have to put "happy birthday" and "Jingle Bells" as one and two), but for my palate, this is just right.

All apologies to Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Bjork, the Ditty Bops, Elton John, Billy Joel, and all my other favorite artists. Y'all make some other top five list for me.

^Your sig says Zeppelin is the best, yet none of your T5 are done by him...

read my sig again were it says saying zepplin is #1 is as pointless as saying the grass is green.
plus this is more of my favs as of now. All time "The Immigrant Song", and "The Ocean" would be there.

Because Zeppelin is sooo metal.

Anyways.

5. Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You
Such a good song. You can feel the emotion. Very classic guitar solo as well. Great song.

4. Modest Mouse - Dramamine
I listened to this a lot back when I was into indie. Different sound. It's a really chilled out/laid back song that you listen to when you think about random things.

3. Dragonforce - Through the Fire and the Flames
It gets me pumped and makes me want to go on an adventure taming pythons/bears/dinosaurs.

2. Aventura - Ella y Yo
I'm half colombian. I listen to a lot of spanish music when I'm with my dad's side of the family, namely my aunt. I don't speak spanish, oddly enough, but i do understand it. This song is sad if you understand it. Very emotionally driven.
