Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Top 5 Most Popular Animes in America

I don't have any particular order , but I like Pokemon, Dragonball and sequels, Gundam Seed, Zatch Bell, and definitely Naruto. I have about 50 dubbed episodes on my computer desktop.

Edit: I almost forgot about the show called Avatar. Kinda weird, I know, for a 43 year old man liking anime, but hey, I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't get teased much. Most people think it's kinda cute that I have strange hobbies.

Fooly Cooly or FLCL. It's a very animated anime, filled obscure references, and hyperactive teens. It's very very weird, but that's what makes things interesting!

yknow, I think I just got it:

Bobobo-bo-bo-bobo is an FLCL Rip off! Huzzah! No wonder it's so awesome. =P

I think Naruto is pretty popular. Yu-Gi-Oh to alot of people like it. The only people who watch Pokemon are really the people who are TOTAL Pokemon fans/play the tcg so I think Yugioh has alot more people because of the wider range.

My List:
1. Pokemon
2. FMA
3. Getbackers
4. Trigun
5. Yu-Gi-Oh

Mine is probably different from everyone else's list. Has anyone heard of Getbackers?(Besides me)

It really depends on what you mean by "most popular", most watched, or most widely known, and are you talking currently, and do animes that haven't been here long (or at all) count?

Right now, I'd say the top 5 would be:

1. Inuyasha
2. Pokémon
3. Naruto
4. FMA
5. Zatch Bell

All-Time though:
1. DBZ
2. Pokémon
3. Inuyasha
4. Sailor Moon
5. Yu-Gi-Oh

It's hard to even compare Pokémon (and Yu-Gi-Oh even) to a lot of the other animes, since most animes that do well in the US are aimed at an at least slightly older audience.

Most of the (for example) Naruto auidience has known about Naruto for quite a while, and a big chunk of them have already downloaded, or otherwise seen episodes of the show, so you don't have as many Naruto fans waiting for Saturday to see an episode they probably saw last year. Whereas, probably around 95% the Pokémon audience, sees episodes for the first time every Saturday.

erm....you're all kidding me, right? Pokemon is not a popular anime. Nor is Yugioh. Want proof? Go to an anime convention, tell me how many people you see dressed up as a Pokemon character or a Yugioh character. Then tell me how many people you see dressed up as Naruto characters.

Once again, look at the fan-base. Pokémon could have 50 million fans, but if they're all between the ages of 8-11, you won't see them at an anime convention, Naruto could have a fraction of that, but if they're all 18 years old w/a job and money, you'll probably see a bunch at an anime convention.

top anime this is hard to rank WPM.

Rurouni Kenshin
Cowboy Beebop
Trigun

No, anime is japanese animation. Spongebob is American.
Anime is just the Japanese word for animation, but people use it to refer to the Japanese styled cartoons.

And for like... just average people who aren't hardcore anime fans... Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, DBZ, and... hm. I dunno about the last one.

I'm really surprised that not ONE single person has mentioned Ranma 1/2... that is definately one of the most popular and well known animes around the world.

My list would have Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, Neon Genesis Evangelion... (Another one which I saw mentioned only a few times... come on... if it isnt popular/well know, why is Gainax still putting out new merchandise for it 10 years later?) As for a fifth anime, well... I dunno what to say. Trigun is certainly a popular one... Inuyasha, Full Metal Panic, Love Hina, Rayearth.

There are certainly a few stand alone movies that are quite well known in the anime world: End of Evangelion, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Princess Mononoake- just to name a few...

I just don't think most anime is very good. The story lines usually don't go anywhere, and there are rarely any "morals to the story." Have any of you ever even tried watching yugioh? It's ridiculous. Pokemon at least maintains some kind of good vs. evil moral, and maintains its facts in accordance to the GameBoy games, while in yugioh, you just have people playing random cards with different rules every show that have nothing in common with the rules of the game in real life. Were the Japanese dilerious when they made that show? Why would you watch a japanese cartoon with english subtitles when you could watch it in english? The only anime I ever watched was Lupin the 3rd. The sexual innuendo was pretty funny in that one. And the one ST Pika showed me on the way back from nationals last year. that one was pretty tight lol. I liked the cowboy bebop movie a couple years back too, so you could say my opinion isn't without a fair amount of exposure to it. Does anyone know if they are making another cowboy bebop movie?

Let me get this straight...you're basing your opinion of anime off of Pokemon and Yu-gi-Oh!? ._. And the english versions on top of that. Neither of those shows are anything what most anime is like.

As for why people would rather watch it with subtitles:
  • It's uncut, unedited and you see it the way it was meant to be presented. Original dialog and all.
  • American voice actors can just be so miscasted that the dubbed version is incredibly painful to watch. (i.e. One Piece)
  • It may never get dubbed, so how else are you gonna see it?
  • Just don't want to wait for it to get dubbed. (I'm guilty of this. ;p)

I'm pretty far removed from english anime but I think the Top 5 most popular would look something like this at the moment:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Naruto
DB/Z/GT
Cowboy Bebop (afterall they've re-ran in a billion times...someone must be watching it still xD)
School Rumble!! Oh...wait...thats just my favorite... >__>;;
Inuyasha?
