Top 64 Nationals Seniors

Yes very impressive, isn't it? For my very last tournament in Seniors, it was a nice change to do reasonably well in a large tournament. It was also my first Nationals ever, and I was quite intimidated by the number and skill of many of the players. After much testing and just pulling out different decks, I started with LuxChomp, moved on the Cursegar, Jumpluff, and even DialgaChomp, but eventually came back to LuxChomp. My friend and I play mirror matches all the time, and I felt I was pretty familiar with the deck and how it worked. I put together my list, but there were a few slots I was still unsure of. I was pretty sure I wanted to run a Mewtwo counter, and that would have been Xatu from Unleashed, since it also works against Plox and Machamp. The other option was running Entei Raikou Legend, but I decided against it as it only really improves Jumpluff, and I could beat my brothers Luxpluff without much hassle. In the end, I decided on Xatu, as I hate autolossing to Mewtwo, and I heard about a lot of Plox/Azelf X.

PS I am Erik L from Boston area.

Round One vs. Trey E.
Trey tells me right off the bat he's been playing the game only for a few days, and I immediately don't believe him as he's sporting Professor sleeves. But as we play it becomes clear he was being honest, and he was fun and intelligent to play with, despite his lack of experience. He was playing Torterra with Spiritomb and Judge, and it gets alot closer then it should when he Judges my god hand away when I still have 4 prizes left. I eventually hit a Cyrus, and am able to pick off my last four prizes from his bench. The best part of the match was when he figured out what Forest Murmurs did. He ended up going 4-5 I believe, well done Trey

1-0

Round Two vs. Josh? with Gengar/Garchomp C

This game was a riot. He asked me where I was from, and I told him I was from Prussia. I was kinda loopy, must have been something I ate. Anyway, I quickly cut him off with a few Sprays and snipe off his Garchomp and kill some Gastlys. I take my prizes one by one, and even though he manages to rip a psychic balance for 10 cards, all he manages is a candy-Gengar and a couple of Flash Bites to kill a Benched Luxray. I kill a Crobat for game.

2-0

Round Three vs. Olliver/olliver/gallade on the 'gym with Garchomp SV/Flygon RR

Another trashy game. I spray/kill his Claydol quick, and pick off KOs as the game goes on. He gets a Flygon up with a DCE, which I KO with a Dragon Rush. He also topdecks into a Garchomp SV belted on his bench, and he goes for a Guard Claw on my Garchomp after I KO Flygon. I am unable to D Rush for the KO as he Guard Clawed, so he retreats and hides behind basics as he tries to Uxie for 7 but is sprayed. Eventually I have one prize left and all he has is Garchomp, and I KO for game.

3-0

Round 4 vs. Nathan? B. with Kingdra

I open with Natu and call for a Luxray and a Garchomp with another benched Luxray. He quickly KOs Natu, and I am forced to sacrifice a Luxray to provide time to set up. I rip a double prize KO on a belted Kingdra, and followed up with a D Rush to his Claydol. He attacks with Kingdra and can't KO, so I Cyrus for a Spray and KO his Kingdra. I spray his Uxie, and thats game over.

4-0

Round 5 vs. Thomas A with Gyarados

I open quick with Luxray GL and get a few KOs off Sableyes and Spraying Regimove. I BL a Regice and Flash Impact for 60, but he has the warp and warps to the bench. He gets out a Donphan on his bench and I OHKO his belted Gyarados. The prizes are now 5-2, my favor. Unfortunately, he flash bites a benched Chomp on the bench for a KO, then uses earth quake for the KO on my active Luxray, leaving me with nothing. I promote Uxie X in hope of baiting more Earthquakes to Ko his Regice. I then collector to grab Luxray, Garchomp, and Uxie. He KOs uxie x with Gyarados after warping Donphan, and I Dragon Rush his Claydol, leaving me with one prize and him with two. I have a psychic on my Chomp, and I know I can galactice Switch it over to Luxray and Bright Look his Regice for game next turn. He runs through his deck with Uxies and Felicitys, knowing he needs two turns to KO Chomp. He hits one with Uxie.... then the other with Felicity. He KOs Chomp, and all I have is Luxray with an Energy Gain. I throw it active, since I lose if I can't hit any energy in my deck. I burn through my hand, Level Up Luxray... and Set Up.... Second to last card.... DCE! I Bright Look for game.

5-0

Round 6 vs. Aylam R with absurdly teched out Cursegar

We are deck checked, and we are both good to go. We play war with some dice, and it was actually pretty fun. I get my deck back, he mulligans, and we draw. I open with Luxrays, which is perfect since I can easily flip Luxrays around to stay out of trainer lock. He gets out the infamous Manectric PL out quick and I make the decision to KO it instead of Bright Looking a Haunter. I continue to stay out of trainer lock and take prizes off of Baltoys/Azelf/Uxies until I make a critical error. Thinking Ill be able to use my turns after I bright look, I drag up the Spiritomb with 30 instead of an Uxie... and can't Poketurn. Stuck in trainer lock, I now can't turn my Xs and am dead in the water. He seizes the opportunity and runs through me with Level Downs and Shadow Skips, and I can't stop the inevitable. loss. Im still not sure how he draws into everything he needs without a Claydol.

5-1

I am yet to ever beat Aylam, and it's always something stupid like that ^^. Something about him just unnerves me....

Round 7 vs. Stephen with Luxchomp Mirror

I open pretty strong, but he goes first with a Call, meaning odds are he'll be able to rip a D Rush before me, barring a terrible start for him. I attach a DCE to my Chomp that's behind a Uxie, and Rosys.. just to find my second Uxie, Second Chomp, AND Ambipom G are all prized. With a tiny hand, I am forced to grab Uxie just to stay in the game. He D Rushes my Chomp, and I promote a Luxray and Bright Look his benched Toxicroak G and Zen Blade for the KO with Uxie X, since I am going to rely on Luxray to have any chance at winning. I draw into my second Chomp, and he passes without getting a KO. I bench Garchomp, and grab another KO with Luxray to get my Ambipom. I pass with something active.(This was a mistake, as I should have Earthquaked his Chomp for a KO) I have Ambipom in my hand, and all he has is a Chomp X with a Call, and I assume he will attach another call or a basic energy and D Rush, leaving him exposed to Ambi. He pulls out a DCE and D Rushes, leaving him with a Call so I can't use ambipom. Without many options and simply Flash Impact his Garchomp for 60. He retreats to a Unown Q'd Uxie and attaches another Call to Garchomp. I Aaron's and pass. He drops Drifblim FB, attaches Psychic and Gain, Galactic Switch, and snipes an Azelf. Now left with zero resources, I desperately try to kill the Drifblim. I kill it, but it is too little to late. He uses Garchomp for the last couple prizes as my field crumbles to dust on the wind.

5-2

Ughh.... After my best tournament start EVER, I go from 5-0 to 5-2... I now have to win the last two rounds the next morning to have a chance to cut. I can hardly sleep as Im nervous Ive blown it all after some dumb luck and misplays.

Round 8: vs (?) with Cursegar

I open again with Luxray, perfect for beating Cursegar. He starts with Dual Mimes, Drops a Gastly, Q's Mime and Pitch Darks. I attach DCE, drop a Crobat G to Flashbite, use a Rosys to grab a Chomp and an Uxie, Set up and draw into my second bat to KO the Gastly.:nonono: I follow up by dragging up Baltoys and KOing. He eventually rips a massively important Set Up for 7, which puts him back in the game. He Judges me, leaving me with little, and starts setting up Mewtwo. I attack around Mewtwo, Killing his Claydol and attempt to set up Xatu. He has plenty of prizes, so I know I can afford to Sac a few things. I stupidly allow him to Gigaburn a Garchomp X, allowing him to further close the gap. I only have to prizes left, and I dragon rush for another, but he somehow KOs Chomp. I am forced to let him get it down to 1-1 in prizes to set up my last Bright Look for game.

Phew.... That was tooooo close...

6-2

Round 9: vs (?) with Dusknoir

He gets a quick Dusclops with a belt, but this was a textbook Luxchomp Game for me. It was simple to let his Dusknoirs hit me and then turn or Healing Breath. I have two prizes to his 5 or so, when he tries to use a second Night Maintenance and shuffles in a few cards. I look at his discard pile, and he only has one in there. He actually calls the judge over himself, and I get a free prize, which actually made the win a lot simpler as all he had in play was a Nidoqueen, a Dusknoir X, and a Duskull. I snipe off the Duskull for game.

7-2

WOOT! I never thought I'd be able to pull that off...

I talk in the deck check line with Jason M, Edmund K and Elijah J... all nice guys. I ends up I will be playing with Elijah after discussing our decks in the hour we were in that line. He was playing a slow-sounding Luxchomp that ran Mewtwo, Quagsire, and Honchkrow G. I seemed to me that if I opened with a Cyrus and a Call, I could outspeed and outmaneuver his clunkish deck.

Top 64 game 1 vs Elijah J

Well, I got the call alright... but not much else. Thats the one energy I see all game pretty much, and despite the fact I managed to pick up at least 2 prizes, it's almost too painful to try to remember that game. I scoop once the small ray of hope vanished.

Game 2:

My hand= absolute, utter, indisputable trash. He goes first and still manages to set up three SPs to be able to use Power Spray, and after he draws 5 prizes, I throw in the towel.

After grabbing my 9 Packs and my Giratina hat, I run across the street and watch the US get butchered my Ghana. -sigh-

I don't quite understand this bit.

Congrats anyway.

he used one previously, and then used it, stating "second night maintenance" prompting my discard pile search.

I'm Jimmy. I remember talking to you a lot.

I didn't know you scrubbed out of T64 :/ I scrubbed out too so yeah.
