Top Cut Invitational: Tournament of Champions

I think people need to settle down. It is up to the person running the event to decide who gets invited to play in it.

"best player on the planet"... I didn't know that top cutting a bunch of times without ever winning anything big makes a person the best in the world. By that logic I'm the best player in the great lakes region!!!

EDIT: I'll admit you have an impressive list of accomplishments, but your ego is a little out of control there buddy.

Lol. What have you ever won? Don't diss on Gino. You must have missed where he won Nats and t4ed Worlds.

His whole post is exactly why he shouldn't be invited IMO. A tournament of champions is for people who represent the game and whom you consider role models. Gino's accomplishments, as good as they might be, do not compensate for his attitude.

When I first saw this I wondered how long it would be before the self declared tag of "Tournament of Champions" would cause problems.

Answer: about two days.

I like "Top Cut Invitational" as a name. Why dilute what it is with a description that is contentious when there are bound to be more champions than places at a small eight player invite only event? Or make it worse by laying claim to deciding who are role models.

Gino is a champion. One amongst many. Not every champion will get to play.

Gino has the accomplishments to be there. Anyone saying he shouldn't be there because of his attitude is suffering from scrub player syndrome.

The definition of a champion
cham·pi·on/ˈCHampēən/
Noun: A person who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition, esp. in sports

The definition of a hater
A person that simply cannot be happy for another person's success.
So rather than be happy they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person.

Sorry you don't like my attitude bro

Hate Gino or not he's a good player, one where very few people can compare reps with him.

I'm glad a tournament like this is happening, it would have been nice to have some sort of certeria outside of "this is who we want" sort of thing. But I am glad this sort of thing is happening, before I heard about it I was honestly going to approach Pooka or Jason and see if they were interested in a Lafonte vs. Underground tournament, with our best 5 vs. their best 5.

Personally, I think Ty Wheeler is a good candidate. 2 States, 1 Regs, T8 Nats, numerous CC/BRs and #1 in the world.

he's a senior though. we're talking about the best players of all time, with the greatest accomplishments of all time. i know ty and he's really good but not like ness or yamato.

Unfortunately, we can invite only 8 players this time around. Clearly there are more than 8 National and World Champions, so some people are going to get left out. If a player feels like he got snubbed or overlooked, we apologize. In the future, we will have bigger events assuming this goes well. We know who the good players are, and they will get their chance to shine eventually - Gino especially. We have our reasons for why we chose these players for the inaugural Top Cut Invitational, and I'll leave it at that.

Jay, we could set something like that up. We were planning on doing something like that with the people from Top Cut, but we could do Lafonte, too. Just let me know when you would want to do that - maybe Thursday?
Posted with Mobile style...

Kyle I can talk to them and see if they are interested or not, I'm staying with Con, Gino and Alex and I know they fly out Sunday night. I'm getting in early Thursday morning and I believe they are getting in early afternoon. So Thursday would probably be the day to do it if we did it.

What do you plan to do if all 4 players in a pod goes 2-1?

Rethink that for a second....
If everyone goes 2-1, that means the pod's W/L would be 8-4. How exactly would that be possible if they're all playing each other? The total W/L would have to be 6-6 (assuming no drop). At best there could be 2 players 2-1 and 2 players 1-2, but if so those 2 players would've played each other and determined the tiebreaker

no, you could have 3 players go 2-1, all going 1-1 against each other and the the fourth player be 0-3, i don't think that would happen, but it could also here's what I'd want if i go to choose who'd be in-

Jason K
Pooka(okay he can't play, but w/e)
Chris Fulop
Yamato
Yuta Komatsuda
Justin Sanchez
Sami Sekkoum

Then two of these guys-

Jimmy Ballard/J-Wittz(I know the 1st two might be a bit unlikely, but Jimmy's prolly the best rogue player and J-Wittz is one of the, if not the, most recognizable player b/c of his videos and articles)/Gino Lombardi/Drew Holton/Jay Hornung/Curran Hill
That would be who I would pick

Personally, I don't think Justin Sanchez should get invited. NO OFFENSE TO HIM WHATSOEVER, it's just many other players have won Nats and had many other achievements too.

Hey guys! Just chiming in real quick, the pod system is going to be a little different in order to avoid the 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 0-3 scenario where 3 players 2-1 the pod and an unfortunate player goes 0-3. Here's a quick example of how the system's gonna work...

Pod A
Player A
Player B
Player C
Player D

Round 1:
Player A faces player B and Player C faces Player D

Round 2:
The 2 winners of round 1 face off. The 2 losers of round 1 face off.

At this point, the loser of the 2nd match is eliminated, since he has now lost twice. The winner of the first match, however, automatically takes the 1st seed in the pod.

Round 3:
The 2 remaining players face off for the 2nd seed in the pod. The loser is eliminated.

The same will happen for Pod B. After which the 1st seed from Pod A will take on the 2nd seed in Pod B and vice versa. Then obviously the finals will follow.

Hopefully that format isn't too confusing, but we figured it was the best one we could use given the time restraints. It still kind of has the feel of being a double elimination event, as you have to lose 2 matches to be eliminated. Pod player will be single game matches, top 4 will not.

As far as not including Justin Sanchez is concerned, that'd be a big mistake on our end if we didn't. He's our current National Champion and it's exciting to pit him up against the legends of the game. Kinda like a new school representative. I'm sure he can hold his own against them, and it's going to be a pretty neat story to follow as the tournament progresses.

this sounds really cool

some ideas we could work around is , to actually see who the best players are it would be cool if they all played identical decks, so noone has matchup excuses

for example ooooo jason only lost to pooka cause he had a bad matchup

another idea wuld be if in the future you got the 4 best players from recognizable competing countries (countrys with past world champions)

and made it a big international invitational tournament (a mini worlds ;))
