Top Decks at Lakewood Colorado CC (and other info)

Here's what the top decks were today at the Lakewood Colorado City Championship:

15+

1st - AmphyEX/Amphy/Magneton/Buzz(Thunder Spear)
The best combo in this deck was the second turn Thunder Spear (powered with Elekid's attack). It was extremely fast at taking out Pokemon early in the game. Then, AmphyEX "cleaned up any leftovers" during mid-late game.

2nd - GardevoirEX/Gardevoir/Wobuffet/Mewtwo/Xatu(Miracle Healing?)
It was interesting to see the Xatu healing work when it setup. Psy Shadow the active to add Psychic, then remove 1-2 damage counters, worked very well from what I saw.

3rd - MagcargoEX/Dunsparce
Definately a rogue deck played by one of the better Colorado Springs adult players. It was NICE to see something different. This player used strategic activation of Magcargo EX to win numerous games.

4rd - Sceptile/Delcatty
Obviously meant to takeout Gardevoir decks and possible Rayquazas.


11-14

1st - GardevoirEX/Gardevoir/Wobuffet/Absol
This player often used Absol's second attack to come back when behind on prizes.

2nd - Espeon/Wobuffet/Zangoose
Another original deck from an "out-of-town" player. Way to go Joshua!


10-under

1st - MagcargoEX/Blaziken/Dunsparce
A decent deck played by a decent young-un.

Here's couple facts about our tournament.

1. Obviously, TMS gave us fits in the beginning. We started over an hour past registration-start due to glitches. Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

2. NO RAYQUAZAs!! I didn't expect that!!

3. We ran Best of 3, 45-minute matches, and everyone LOVED it! We'll never run 1-game matches again in Colorado!

4. The local players (10) were outnumbered by the out-of-towners (12). And, the medal winners in each age group were all from my out-of-town group, the Colorado Springs league.

5. One of our player's uncle paid for the whole trip (gas, food, fees) for all 10 players who made the 90-minute trek north from Colorado Springs. Way to go Uncle B!

6. No Promo cards!! I was expected to see something new. Oh well.

7. The medalions were all engraved with the location of the CC (Lakewood).

8. No mention of what the VIP package contents will be.

9. One booster box of Dragon for the entire staff support team.

10. We ran 6 rounds, best-of-3, age-modified. The 15+ champion was decided by 3-percentage tie-breaker points. The 11-14 champ won outright by match points. The 10-underplayer won by 22-percentage tie-breaker points. Everyone kept beating everyone.


All in all, it was a very successful tournament for Lakewood which usually only draws about a dozen players each week. Great job Ron P (the TO) and Hobbytown (the location). Excellent gaming facility with LOTS of space. Now, only 3 more Colorado CCs to run and/or attend.

So if you had 22 players how many byes to States did the winners earn? And no Top 8 and since when can we do 2 of 3, i would love that. I am starting to get pretty impatient with the lack of detailed information by Nintendo, M:TG has their events made up 6 months before they happen and they have way more to organize. Anyway glad to hear the even went well and i can take a guess why Rayquaza wasn't played - ITS 30 DOLLARS LOL. Hopefully i get a return email from Nintendo tomorrow or something.....
 
Scizor, my TO ran the tournament swiss-rounds-only, no Top 8. I suppose that was right, but I never read the tournament guidelines.

Regarding best-of-3, that's up to the TO/HJ. We had the time, and the desire (and expectation) of every player at the tournament to run best-of-3. We've been doing that at our regular local tournaments for some time now.

Yah, I saw Rayquaza going for LOTS on Ebay, almost half as much as the recent TV Reporter Reverse Holo that sold for $60.

One other note. I saw nearly 200 DragonEX boosters opened last night. NOT A SINGLE reverse holo TV Reporter amongst the bunch.

This is from the Pokémon Organized Play Floor Rules:

Definition of a Match
Each match consists of one game of Pokémon. A tournament organizer may declare at the beginning of a tournament, that a match consists of more than one game, but must state this before the tournament starts.

So it would seem that two out of three or even other combinations are allowed.

That is how PUI likes to have the Prerelease is Swiss-rounds and no Top 8, so Im sure that is how most of the CCs will be also.

:eek: :eek: Wow not even one :eek: Looks like the card is still going to be hard to get in this second printing. :(
 
You are assuming, of course, that these are second printing boxes.

No telling if these were returns from the Pre-Releases, or extra cards leftover from the Pre-Releases that PUSA had to send out with this batch.

I would be very interested to know that fact, before jumping to the conclusion that the card is rare on the second printing too.

Sounds like a great time. Just hope I have Scotty to work me through the software bugs for Cities.

Ahh but maybe the prizes weren't from 2nd printing but from 1st.....
 
Another note:

Age breakout was:

15+ = 10 players
11-14 = 7 players
10- = 5 players

Being a Sunday tournament, and the fact that we had a snow storm Saturday night, really impacted the turnout. Otherwise, we probably would've had a dozen more.

Regarding the TMS software, our TO was saving the tournament and player files to floppy. He had to reboot his "older" system a couple times which took a good 5-minutes each. That was the root of our problem. Also, we had to verbally seat the players because of the inability to print the pairings/results. That added about 2-3 extra minutes to each round. Just keep this in mind when planning your time.

One of the best solutions I've seen for this was at Underground Games in NC.

They had a giant screen TV set up and linked to the PC running the tournament software.

Many stores that I have been in do have TVs setting about and this could be an easy way to show your pairing.
 
Good idea Advisor. Not feasible at Lakewood, but still good idea.

Just a quick thanks to mysterioustrainer for providing table number placements and decklists. Although we required decklists, we never got enough staff help to do deck verifications. For our upcoming Colorado Springs CC, I plan to use the Lakewood Champs as gophers to help do random decklist checks, etc. (On the drive home, I was able to convince my champs to forego playing again and help me run the Colorado Springs CC, in exchange for Dragon boosters. Showing good sportsmanship, they accepted my offer.)
 
Note on Prmo Cards

Just wanted to let everyone know that there are promo cards for the City Champ events - they had to be sent straight from the printer for the 2/1 event, and they were not delivered in time. I trust that the TO of this event will get the promos to the players in whatever way they can - pehaps another road trip for the out of towners?

At any rate, I'm glad to hear that everyone had a great time. The VIP package will be a secret until they are collected, and the TMS is undergoing revision as we speak.

That is true. The stuff sent out could be from first and some of the shops are getting the 2nd.

so is this confirmation that second print run dragon booster boxes are on their way? i really hope tv reporters RH start popping up alot now, since ill need all 4 for my deck =P
 
It mostly used Amphy ex, electrabuzz(SS), elekid(SS), and magneton (rare DR).Very tough to beat! Basically its a play by situation deck where either Amphy ex serves as an attacker or uses its bench effect. Magneton is great for getting lost energy back.
