Tornadus ex PF... usable?

There is a sudden fever at my league for tornadus ex from plasma freeze. One players having really good success with it in plasma box and now its a chase card. I don't see it? The hand refresh is nice as is the possible first turn donk, but I'm not convinced. Is anyone else having similar experiences?

Hand refresh is always good making it a pretty good starting Pokemon and can hit 220 turn one (I'd love to see this!). I don't see it being too hard to power up T2/3 with 2 Plasma and a DCE hitting for a very solid 120 so I can see how it could do well in Plasma Decks.

Having faced decks using this, I can say it's definitely usable. With enough Deoxys and Plasma energy, this destroys everything in one attack. It can become very powerful very quickly with the right cards.

The T1 happened next to me at a battle roads. He T1ed a Cobalion EX. Straight 4 Colress Machines too, not a single attachment.

Aside from that, turning a plasma ball dead draw into a new hand of 6 after an N? Pretty useful as a 1-of imo.

I might try a Tornadus Donk deck in my league and I'll see how it does before I make my opinion on it.

Edit: nvm, it doesn't seem like the best card to play at all.

Tornadus EX just isn't any good. Yes, it can do a ton of damage early IF you get a ridiculous combination of cards, and yes, it can refresh your hand but it 1) has 2 retreat which is horrible and 2) It gets eaten alive by Thundurus EX. Every game I have played against this card with TDK I have completely rolled over them. Doing an average T1 80 or more to a Tornadus EX is the nail in the coffin for this card.

During Battle roads my friend had a landorus ex out and opted not to play another basic at the start of the game as he didnt want it to get catcherd up or donked at the start. The guy had 2x colress machine in hand and 1 plasma. He went first, top decked a colress and got the 1st turn donk...... Ever since then people have been playing tornauds ex hahah =p I still dont think its that good but thats just me

Not the worst EX ever, but not the best. He lacks potential to donk like the other Plasma EXes, unless you are living the dream with 2 Colress Machine + DCE. However, I like refreshing a bad hand. I would never want more than 1 of this, and even then Lugia EX does almost the same things with bigger upside.

I'm liking the other Tornadus EX a lot more right now, but that's because I don't run plasma engine and don't feel like ever doing that.

I'll resist nitpicking some comments here because even I recognize it will be seen as that way by most. I try not to have a double standard; I mean to be clear and thorough and prefer others to as well, but I know I am often unclear.

Does Tornadus EX [Plasma] have anything going for it? Yes, several:

  • Maximum HP for a Pokémon-EX
  • Can tap :colorless: Support
  • Can tap Basic Pokémon support
  • Can tap Team Plasma support
  • Useful Resistance
  • Solid set-up attack
  • High damage potential
It doesn't have much going against it, either:

  • Lightning Weakness
  • Slow natural offensive
  • Low natural damage output
Looking at this list it seems clear it is a good card, right?

Not according to my analysis, but said analysis is not based upon testing. The downsides outweigh or mitigate the good. The format does not favor using an opening attack to set-up. Noteworthy decks do use them... but it is through things like Tropical Beach (works with anything and can be a counter Stadium if needed) or that tie into a greater strategy (Junk Hunt). Tornadus EX [Plasma] can hit hard and fast, but only with specific Energy acceleration, and building Jet Blast carries the risk of losing a lot of Plasma Energy you probably need.

Now, my track record of evaluating cards is hardly perfect, and Pokémon-EX seem to be tricky as their often solid physical presence can turn a normally underwhelming trick into a valuable and reliable one. I was very critical of Kyogre EX and Entei EX, and while they have once again settled into obscurity, they got their 15 minutes of fame.

Has anyone though of running this in a quad style?

4 tornadus ex
4 deoxys ex

using only a strategy to get plasma energy on it ASAP I feel it could overwhelm and k.0 every turn after t3..
