U.S. Nationals hashtagging, etc?

This being my first year of competitive play, I've never attended, nor even been in the competitive community during a bigger event like Nationals. With that being said, I was just wondering how quickly reports, news, etc. go up during/after Nationals? I won't be attending and I'd like to stay up on who's winning and how the tournament is as a whole, and I'm not sure if there's been any organized way of doing so in the past.

If there hasn't been, I wanted to suggest hashtagging as a way of keeping up with it. For those who don't know, hashtagging is a method of organizing information via tweets by tagging them with a hashtag. Hashtagging has been successful in a variety of ways, from organizing parties at South by Southwest (using the hashtag #sxsw), to allowing news, photos, videos, and general information from the situation in Iran right now to be leaked out without the press (using the hashtag #iranelection). There's also simpler ones, such as #musicmonday, etc.

I was thinking that maybe all of the players, staff, etc. that are going to be attending Nationals and have Twitter accounts could post updates and tag it something like #uspokenationals09? Batmylashes and I used #nwpokeregionals09 for our regionals updates, and although it didn't catch on, I intend to keep using it and try to get it to catch on.

The way I see it, instead of players having to take time after the tournament to log onto PokeGym and write a report, we could have hundreds of updates within minutes of a round ending via txt message through Twitter. Of course, the reports wouldn't be as detailed, but we'd be able to have an easily searchable way of obtaining chunks of information.

Anyway, just an idea. Either way, I hope everyone has a safe and fun time at Nationals. Good luck to all the attendees.

- Kenny

@Bullados: #uspokenat09 works as well. Good idea. For those who don't know, tweets are limited to 140 characters, so the shorter the better. Good thinking!

@Billy: Thanks! If there's anything you're confused about, let me know and I'll try to clear it up.

@Prime: You can also use Twitter on your computer, but I guess that kind of kills the "quick update for those who aren't going to nats" idea, unless you're bringing a laptop.

Just to clear some things up...

- If you can send text messages, you can tweet. You just have to sign up for a Twitter account online, and then merge your phone to your twitter account. It's just like sending a text message. Smart phones also have apps like Twitterfon or Tweetdeck that are more complex and detailed than just viewing txts, but that's all you need.

- Also, I guess I neglected to point out how you FIND the information. Basically, if I tweet "Kenny Wisdom just took very last place at Nationals! #uspokenat09" you can then go to search.twitter.com and search #uspokenat09 and all of the posts that include that tag will show up.

If we could spread this around to some of the TOs working nats, maybe some other staff, and players with cell phones or smart phones, this could be a great idea.

Thanks for the support, everyone.

Well, with that whole me sitting on the stage thing, I could probably post updates on here a little more substantial than just tweets.

Of course, that would rely on
1) the stage having internet (probable)
2) me having time (possible)
3) there being an open computer with which to post stuff (unlikely)

So we'll see. If I have all three of those, I'm sure I'll be able to throw some stuff up after each round. Just be aware that my job will sort of take first priority :p

@Apache, @Mystery: That's great! I'd love to see that.

However, even if you didn't have ample time, internet, or a computer, you could always post tweets by just sending a txt on your phone. It's not as substantial as a full blog post, but that was kind of what I was getting at when I made this thread: even if you don't have time or internet, you can still send smaller updates in your spare time.

Thanks to everyone considering doing this.

I'd love to. Might make a Twitter just for this. I'm pretty sure we'll have Wifi, I'll post Friday night from my hotel if we don't. A report will follow on Saturday afternoon/night. I'll be taking notes between rounds at least.

I'm not 100% sure how cool I am with posting what people are playing, so I might just list "win/loss" and the name of the person I play, as I would be pretty mad if someone posted what I was playing WHILE the tourney is still going on. We'll see.

Great idea!

In the past the computer staff in the back room have occassionally posted updates to the Pokegym. I think they started doing standings after round 5 or so. I don't know if that will happen this year with the change to TOM, so it no longer generates standings until swiss is over. Maybe we will see some match records.

I stayed home the year Zane took 5th, and I was glued to the 'gym on Saturday, hitting the refresh button every couple of minutes. Of course with the three hour time change to Columbus that year, when I got up at 9, on Sunday he was already eliminated from the top cut.

Let's go with #uspokenats09.

Glad to see this was so well received. Remember, search.twitter.com is where you're going to want to go to search for all the updates.

@Poteet: Awesome, that's a great idea!

I won't be at Nationals, but I'm sure I'll send my fair share of tweets about it. You can find my Twitter username in my signature.

@YoYo: Yes, exactly. You can go to search.twitter.com and search #uspokenats09.

Looking around right now, it seems quite a few people are using it. Awesome!

@Yoyo: Well done!

If you could all spread this around at the tournament, it'd be great. My goal with this whole thing is to eventually get every bigger tournament (States, Regionals, Nats, World's) to have a hashtag each year and for Twitter to become a major focus of tournament reporting, and the Pokemon TCG community as a whole.

Youdabest, guys.
