Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Virginia's 08-09 City Championship Info

ah, I have been overruled by the Safety Engineer. Hum... I need to do some planning.

As much as I would like to have Fairfax claim the largest CC in VA and Maryland, I didn't think we'd have to get 70 people to do it. Although, the preregistration list was 60+10 and it is full, minus 5 drops, I know a lot of people were still planning on coming. I'd say it is a safe bet if you're on the waitlist that you'll make it in because of no-shows. Those who couldn't make it onto the waitlist should show up early.

AMU is good :) , they both did a great job yesterday, good job Josh, Arron, and Alex!

I'll see everyone at fairfax!

I'm coming, I'm just not playing. Big difference, Mike.
'Course you can borrow my Uxie.

Oh. Wow, I'm stupid. I'm not 100% sure I'm coming, but most likely. Anyway, If I do come.
I have three Roseanne's that you can BORROW Mr. Pika, but I can't trade them. I need all of mine for me and my little brother. He's sick today so he's not coming.

Oh and the reason I get Uxies and you don't is I'm actually from VIRGINIA, You're an evil Maryland invader. Oh, and the fact that I only need one and not SIX helps too.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Update: I'm officialy coming.

Well, getting fourth place at Woodbridge wasn't too bad. Hopefully I'll be seeing everyone at States (no guarantees just yet)
What?! Josh won?! With crappy AMU?! Rediculous!!!! I demand a recount!!!
At least he didn't go undefeated. His only loss all day came from my Gengars. :thumb:

Mmhm. All day I was hoping to see how my Gengars would have faced against him....oh well, there's always States.

Small Fairfax report:

R1-R6: 6-0

- Punished Dan for not getting Claydol until T1000, beat Ariel on her slow start, defeated Jason after a prize penalty gave me the edge, T1'd Jav, T1'd Luke, and caught Dave with 2 Weavile prized. Go Kingdra. ;/

T8: Luke

- He sets up lightning quick G1 (T1 Weavile, T2 Claydol and Tyranitar) but I'm able to respond well enough to stay in it. His Omastar is prized and he does some tricks to try and grab it but whiffs and I clean up. Not enough time for him to make a run at it in the second game.

T4: Dave

- In the first one I need to find a Kingdra on a 5 card Uxie, 4 card Felicity, and 3 Pokedexes for the T1 (T2?) win. I whiff, so we play a legit game. I keep the pressure on him, but Poke Healer + is pretty much the best card ever made, so I lose. In the second game he plays well, spreading damage and Warp Pointing for four prizes with Omastar. I think I would have had it without those Poke Healers, but what are you gonna do? Great games, Dave.

Props:
- Mr. Tuskey, Mrs. Tuskey, Megan, Lea(h), Helen, Foley, and anybody else on staff.
- Pairings were up pretty quickly after every match. Always nice.
- LJ, Alex, and Steven for letting me borrow stuff.
- Kingdra for showing up for work today.
- Cookie Dough Frosty at Wendy's.
- Cool people.
- Me for being such a nice guy. ;)

Slops:
- Huge turnout = cramped play area.
- My back hurts.
- Poke Healer +.
- Lame people. (Don't know if I encountered any, but if I did, you just got slopped.)
- Me for being such a nice guy. ;(

T8:
1: Me (Kingdra)
2: Dan (Gardy)
3: Peter (Abomasnow)
4: Dave (Ttar)
5: Melody (Kingdra/Rhyperior)
6: Jason (Dusknoir/Abomasnow)
7: Michael (Tyranitar)
8: Luke (Tyranitar)
-
X: Pramawat (Gigas, 3-1 drop lol)

T4:
Me vs Dave
Peter vs Michael

T2:
Dave vs Peter

Winner:
Dave

See you all at States.

I was really hoping to play you............................. I was gonna bring my MP3 player and turn on some HSM right before the match.

Anyway, my mini report.(Soooooooo much easier than actually typing out a long one.)

I play Kingdra. game 1 I win turn 1. Game 2 I take five prizes with one Kingdra then Luke drops an Omastar to kill three of my four remaining pokemon then grinds my last horsea.
Game 3: I get an awful start, but I'm playing against Mom's Kindness.dec, so it doesn't matter, I win.
Game 4: Would've won, but I decided to put twenty on her Kingdra instead of KOing Ryperior. Then Rhyperior OHKOs my Kingdra and I can't get another until it's too late.
Game 5: I get a bad start to his turn 2 Gengar and Claydol and turn 3 Dusknoir.
Game 6: My opponent gets a bad start and can't get draw power the entire game.

Props:
SUPER BONBON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It easily is the best card in the format. Even better than Rare Candy.
Both me and my friend not having a losing record.
Chinchillas
God
Mr. Washington loaning me an Uxie. You're the man RA!!!!!!
Slops:
Rare Candy. Don't you know you're just worse than super bonbon in every way?

Whoever decided that here in America we should have a horrible format that includes the card Rare Candy, instead of the brokenness(I must have misspelled that.) that is Super Bonbon.

Omastar.

Only getting one turn 1 win. :frown:

Having an 0-6 record against people with the last name of Anderson.

STAFF-- Volunteers that put in an EIGHT HOUR DAY.. .Whhhaaaaaaahhhhht?
(and the rest of you think it's hard to remember to bring a chair?)

FREE EVENT --- No entry fee events ... rock!

That PIZZA joint in the mall. THEY HAD CANOLI (woot!)

SLOPS:

Pramawat getting mad because I won and dropping out AFTER defeating Johnny the very next round.

I had a good time despite my horrendous starts and getting donked before I even had a chance to draw a card. I hate when skill is taken out of a match and it is all luck. Seriously 2 unown G starts and a third with just a clebi and I have 11 basics!

At least I lost to folks that made it to the top cut, I guess that is something.

Anways, if someone drops from a match why wouldn't those be considered forfeit/losses and count the same. Personally, I think dropping from a match for the reason to prevent damage to your rating does not embody good sportsmanship IMHO.

Dave did a great job and this event was 100 times better than the Battle Roads. We just may need a bigger venue if the popularity and size of these events continue. It was a bit cramped and while the kids didn't seem to mind too much playing on the floor, it did present some challenges.

Tim did a fantastic job with the young ones through some very tough and emmotional children. He handled it very well. Any other judge there would have been fireworks! We sometimes forget the young ones are so young, haven't learned diplomacy, and thier brains are more reactionary than cognitive.

Anways it was a good experience, and while I wish i had done better, I will try modeling being a good loser for my son as I finished 3-3.

I had alot of fun yesterday. The day started off with the store trying to fix this guy's Nitro RC car. Loud, Smelly, and Toxic fumes = no fun. Thankfully they were able to not do it during the event. Unlike what I did at Woodbridge I didn't take my Wii with SSBB up with me. I started the tourney going 2-0 then I had to play a mirror aganist Jav, which came down to the wire. I then win my next two games and lose the last one. I miss the cut placing 9th, I was only out by a couple of points.

Props:
Mr. T for running some really great events
Mrs. T for doing the same
The rest of Staff for the same
Three Steven's at one event (although mine is spelt with ph)
Finishing off the City tournys with a winning record
Winning the game with Claydol

Slops:
Barely missing top cut
My opponent in the fifth round being a jerk
Having to play Abomasnow in the last round

Tim did a fantastic job with the young ones through some very tough and emmotional children.

Agreed! My son had some really nice things to say about Tim.

Fairfax was quite a tournament. With 80 players, it was by far the largest CC my son and I have been too. It was great to see so many juniors. I hope that continues. My son and I had a lot of fun. We both had some great matches.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Thanks to the staff as well. You did a great job keeping things moving despite the number of players and the store closing on us.

When I started doing the whole Pokémon PTO thing, we were told that CCs were "small, store-level events".......

Hello, 80! (wasn't my first STATES around 90??)

I cannot thank my judges (especially those this past weekend: Tim C, Jav, Helen x 2!, Leah, Timothy F) for being the saints that they are. That's really the only work to describe what these folks do... really! They're great people who are either crazy or love the game (maybe both) to put in the crazy long hours, deal with store issues, and tolerate me when I go all stressed out and grumpy on them. Simply put, there would BE no premier events in VA without them.

Pam gave up her weekend despite having some serious work to do for her "real" job. We got home at 1:00 AM this morning. She must love me a bunch to put up with me and my involvement with this game! Megan stepped up to the plate without being asked and became a score runner/computer operator/deck checker/etc.--really whatever was needed to keep the event running as smoothly as possible.

Players and parents of players--you guys are incredible! Thank you for continuing to spend your $$ in these tough economic times on our game. I recognize that there are many ways you could be spending your entertainment dollars and I thank you for supporting Pokémon!!

Here comes Platinum!!

How come every Dad seems to know who "Rogue Archetype" is at these events and I have no clue who they are on PokeGym even though I speak to all of them in person??

Now.. Japple ... did we meet? Were you running Garchomp or Torterra?

VA experiences:
Warrenton: A smaller turn out than I expected but what was expected for a CC. I judge the senior division. It seemed like a very casual environment, very little in the way of penalties (speaking for this division, I don't know about the others). One slop on my part but we all laugh about it, although I still feel bad about it :frown:
Woodbridge: I am so glad I played at this event. Wouldn't want to get trapped judging at a big CC afterall . The event was much bigger than expected. I wasn't expecting more than 40 people because this venue's attendances have been flying under the radar. Instead attendance was reaching towards 70. Masters play 6 rounds, Juniors break to the top 2, both for the first time in the VA CCs (out of the previous 4), I think.
I go 2-4 with the same deck I went 4-1 with in Glen Burnie, MD. What went wrong? During the day, I kept teasing Josh about how I was destroying his resistance along with my premier rating . In the end, I won a game and he gets into top cut.
Rogue_Archetype and The King of Magikarps both beat me, repaying the defeats I handed them at Glen Burnie CC and Warrenton Br, respectively. My first game against Josh was the best game all day. The other games I couldn't get anything set up. Against Spencer, I my opening hand was 2 Premier Balls, a Torterra and its lvX, and a Turtwig but no way to evolve. Against TKOM, both Treeckos were prized along with a Turtwig .
Fairfax: Wouldn't want to get trapped judging a big CC like Woodbridge, yeah right! Leah called it at the last PR but no body listened to her. We made the cut off 80 people because that's what we had tables for. For comparison, that's the size of a small state championship.
The Juniors were a great crowd. A fun group that is mature beyond their years for sure, and even when they did something wrong or the games aren't going well, their great maturity shows. I don't know who these juniors are who have good things to say about me, they were great to work with.

If anyone wants to pass any comments about any of the events onto the higher-ups, this can be done through your My Pokemon Account. Each tournament has its own submission form for opinions related to that one event. A helpful guide to do that is found here: http://pokegym.net/forums/view.php?pg=reportaproblem).

Hello, 80! (wasn't my first STATES around 90??)
I think it was actually 63. 90 was the year before last.
it was 60-something, 90-something, then 131.

Slops:
- Huge turnout = cramped play area.
And we still turned away people.

Slops:
...
- My back hurts.
My back along with my feet, legs, arms, and shoulders hurt. That's what happens when you get old :thumb:

Props:
SUPER BONBON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It easily is the best card in the format.
ah yes, super bonbon. She is good, non? *nods*
Props to the two French people who hooked me up with the Super Bonbons.

Having an 0-6 record against people with the last name of Anderson.
VA Andersons or MD Andersons?

Jav ... He's just a good game win or lose. Good Peoples.
Javier is good "peoples"?

SLOPS:
Having to Play against Mrs Washington! ugh... lose-lose proposition there... lol
Now there's a long ride home

Great event + great judges + great organizer = insane turn out

I'll have to remember that formula next time I make plans to attend one of these VA tournaments. I had NO clue there was a pre-registration list. So you can imagine my surprise when my son and I showed up and were told repeatedly in line that we probably would not get in.

Luckily we got in, just barely (THANKS!!) and had a great time. Thanks!

Thomas Dorris

wait.... so who won in SRs and MAs? I'm fairly certain Patrick M won Seniora, but not 100%, and I'm not remotely sure about MAs.
