for the last 2 years i have participated in Buy Nothing Day instead. it's an international protest against corporate greed, american consumerism, and the loss of the holidays (christmas & thanksgiving) to the shopping cart. news like this doesn't help me want to participate in a standard christmas.
this year i finally had the courage to tell my family (and back it up) that i do not desire to give/receive presents on christmas. i will still participate with the family, but i am not buying anything, and do not want anything purchased for me. i used to just ask that my family purchased none of my presents at wal-mart (more protest), but few honored my wishes.
i also noticed that this year meijer (regional department store) started with a special sale on thanksgiving day, at 6 am. that is pretty broken.
i don't force my beliefs on anyone else, and i don't even bring it up much, as people give me some odd looks when i answer that i do not participate in christmas. i will acknowledge my role in tragedies like this. someone asked who is responsible. we all are. i jsut ask that this christmas, ask yourself what benefit you take from the holidays. most of the people that i know get stressed out, spend too much, and forget the real focus of the holidays. find some peace this year.
