I'm not sure that I'm connecting the dots on this line of thought. Can you clarify? Are you indicating that we should be more lenient on chat messaging if both players are adults?

I certainly think that would be acceptable, especially for some of the silly things that have come up in this thread. Or at least giving the option for players to disable the chat filter entirely _for people on their friends list_ (if and when that works).

Unfortunately, the current implementation of the chat filter alerts a moderator if a chat message contains one or more flagged words or phrases, but doesn't provide the moderator with context for where the message was posted. We're working to improve that process, with a goal of establishing a slightly more relaxed policy for chat between players on each others' Friends List.

Mike, I want to directly say: This open line of communication is amazing. Every concern I see that is compelling, you take the time to jump in and make it clear "We are now working on a solution to this problem". I appreciate that you are DIRECTLY paying attention to the community.

This sort of relaxing of the policy is exactly what we need, although I think it's brilliant that you guys offer warnings and not just outright bans. I think it's very clear PTCGO is in good hands, and that you guys want to see it through to be the best product it can be.

I strongly disagree with your first statement. Bullying, harassment, etc. should be treated seriously, regardless of the age of the target. The only mitigating factor, in my opinion, is if both players understand that the comments are meant in jest. Unfortunately, the internet is not great at conveying tone, so comments made in jest can fairly easily be misinterpreted as serious. I believe that if you've got another player on your Friend List, there is greater likelihood that both parties have an innate understanding of tone, and are less likely to be offended by smack talk. This is why I made my previous statement regarding relaxing the moderation policy for Friend Battles.

I can see some merit in disabling the filter for games against people on your Friend List. I can also see some pitfalls. I'll bring it up with the team for discussion. However, based on the overall tone that we want to establish in the game, we're more likely to keep the filters on than not.

I was simply refering to people on your friends list...I feel younger players should still have stricter filters regardless who they are talking to. Its less about them and more about what there parents would find apprioate. If Chris and I are playing I think the filter should be more laid back...but if you have 2 15 years old playing I think the filter should be strict.

Perhaps also consider something where the filters could be turned off or lessened but only if both players allow it.

I also think that if the option to disable the filter were on during a game with someone on your Friends List if they said something truly offensive you could still report them. For those times when, "not cool man" doesn't sink in.

Chat filters are terrible if you don't use the language they are made for.
I tried to chat in my own language and it looks like I was using only naughty words, while we were trying to chat about a prerelease.

I am not sure if the option to block people is there already, but that's a way better option.
If you don't like the language a person is using, block him/her so you will never have to play/talk to him/her again.

I am very pleased to see us getting feedback fairly promptly. That being said, given the nature of this (a product with a user end agreement, meant for all ages, and being quite new still), I really think the users adjusting to it is important. A "select language" option would be nice for those with a native tongue that constantly trips the filter, but at least we aren't restricted to generic, pre-composed messages.

Blocking people generally only happens after an offense is made; with adults this is often the best option but because someone feels certain language or topics aren't suitable for their child or even themselves, blocking is scar tissue, to protect after the fact, not before.

It's very simple. Have strict chat filters. Use chat filters to moderate words or terms people find offensive. Block these words or terms.

However, also have the option to turn off chat filters. This option shouldn't be tied to your age, it should just be an option. However, you are responsible for any offense that is taken once the chat filter is off.

Fix the glitches, and you have the chat system used by 99% of competent online games.

The chat filter was insanely frustrating.

I tried to type the word tool, to discuss eviolite damage. NOPE

I got frustrated because I misclicked and nothing could be done about it. "I hate how many mistakes I make in this program compared to playtcg.me" NOPE

I tried to type more than 2 lines of text. NOPE
