Pidgeotto Trainer

New Member
Well I had been going through pokemon card sites, the gym trading post and more for the last week frantically trying to complete my deck. My computer dying last week didn't help either. So I took my Pidgeotto and my Cerulean City Gym pin to honor my old Northgate Wizards Pokemon league that finally closed 3 days ago(league stopped months ago) and got there early to beg people for their cards. Luckily I saw some friends who had what I needed. Thank you Matt for the Delcatty, Brian for the Rare Candy and trading a Cune ex, the guy in the poke center jersey for the Swampert ex (sorry don't know your name) and my friend Jeremy for loaning me the Cune ex. So after putting aside my worries of having to play something else all week I had to help my friends Quinn and Jeremy also from my old league. They're both in the 10 and under. Jeremy was playing B&R and with some of my cards had just about the whole deck except Oracles so I threw in Jugglers. Quinn didn't have a lot of cards but he wanted to build Aggron ex so I put in Psychic tech of Wobs and Espeon since I don't think Wailord is enough to beat Blaz. Thanks again Matt and Brian for loaning Quinn Shards and Sparce. Note to new players:Don't Trade your Sparce!!! So after frantically putting decks together for an hour I have just enough time to sit down to my first practice game with the Wobs I put in and get up again to see the pairing before I lay out a basic. My deck was:
Pokemon 23
4 Dunsparce (s&r)
4 Mudkip (bubble)
1 Marshtomp (slash)
3 Swampert (water call)
1 Swampert ex
2 Suicune ex
1 Magnemite (skyridge-thunder wave)
2 Magneton (magnetic field)
1 Skitty (plus nrg)
2 Delcatty (nrg draw)
2 Wobbuffet (safeguard)
Trainers 21
4 Oracle
4 TV Reporter
4 Rare Candy
2 Switch
2 Crystal Shard
1 Town Volunteers
4 Pokemon Reversal
Energy 16
10 Water
2 Lightning
2 Psychic
2 Boost
At first glance this list looks odd. 8 draw cards? Wobbuffet? 1-2 lines? 2 Lightning, 2 Psychic? And 4 Reversal! This list is more on the teched side than consistant draw but Delcatty helps a lot. The 1-2 lines are risky and some games hurt but overall did alright. At the last moment I took out the 2nd Magnemite and Skitty for 2 Wobbs. That was a good move. I like Reversal in almost any deck. It should be used overall way more than I see. I haven't seen any Swampert decks with Reversal mostly because its so tight space-wise but they paid off so many times. I didn't face any other Reversals all day.
It was announced it would be top 8 for the 21 people in 11-14 so I assumed 4-2 was needed.
1st round- vs.? (I'm sorry I don't remember all the names but this time I remembered most) w/Gardevoir
I started with Mudkip and it took my only nrg of the game. I didn't get any draw power and got only 2 Wobs after Mudkip. He just beat me with 1 Wob. Again I only had 1 nrg all game. 0-1
2nd Round-vs.? w/ Roselia/Flygon/Amphy ex
I saw Lightning and got worried so I Oracled for Swampert ex asap. He never evolved his Mareeps or Trapinches so Swampert ex had a quick win. Only time I used him all day. 1-1
I play a practice game with Grandma Joner and his B&R and he wins.I started with Cune ex and never had more than 1 nrg. He's a cool guy and I talked to him throughout the day.
It was lunch now so I stayed around and ate my lunchable. :D
3rd Round-vs. Crystal w/Gardevoir
This was a really good game. I started early attacking with Swampert which is a pretty good attacker on its own. By midgame she proved that Garde ex was too much for Swampert so it was time to unleash Wobbuffet. I used a couple Reversal to get 1 to gust up Gardevoir RS and ko'd it. She played Cyclone nrg to get around Wobbuffet and get another prize. Either then or soon after she had another Gardevoir RS and a Wobby building. I now had 2 Reversal again and just drew into my 2nd Fet and attach to it. I Reversal up Gard RS and ko with Fet. She ko's with her Wob and I double attach with Swampert and ko her Wob. The prizes are 2-2 but she only has 2 Gardevoir ex in play. She Warp Points and gets another ko making it 1-2. I attack her Gard ex with Wob and prey she doesn't have another WP. She confesses she has used all of them and I win. 2-1
4th Round-vs. Brian w/Blaziken/Quaza
This was a close game. Early I had Suicune ex powered and 2 Shards in my hand. I Reversaled up a Quaza and sharded it to take an early lead. I thought I had the game virtually won when with a paralyzed Cune, Shard and Oracle Delcatty ready I Reversaled up another Quaza. But when I oracled I found my 2nd Switch to be in my 4 remaining prizes. Next turn he Switches, Recharges attaches multi retreats Sparce and ko's Cune ex. It was down hill from that point on as I wasn't getting any nrg. I finally had enough to throw on a Swampert ex I could Candy up to ko a Quaza w/Shard so I put my whole fate in my last Reversal which failed. It was a close game and I think ultimately it was the Switch in my prizes that lost me the game. Good game Brian. 2-2
So I have to go 2-0 for top8.
5th Round-vs. ? w/Magma deck
It wasn't any kind of nrg manipulation Magma deck but just a Magma deck. He said it was his first tourney so not bad at 2-2. His Magma supporters got him a quick Magma's Groudon which troubled me as I wasn't getting nrg. He started attacking my Cune ex on the bench and then koing Sparce. I got 2 needed Bubble flips until I got Cune fully powered and ko'd Groudon. That was pretty much game. The only thing he had powered was TM Lairon and he never got Aggron. 3-2
6th Round vs. Bryan(BJ) w/Blaziken/Charizard (dragons)
I figure out that if one of the 2 games next to us had a certain winner that we could draw to get top 8. This didn't look like it would happen. I'm worried because I have a terribly slow start but until he gets Blaziken and Charizard built his best attacker is Magma's Torkoal. The discarding of my deck was quite alright if you were only gonna do 10 or 30. When he has Blaziken ready he starts koing with it. I finally get Cune powered up and ko it. He uses Dragon Charmeleon to Smokescreen and Cune only has 40 HP left. I have nothing so I don't want to risk Smokescreen and I retreat for Sparce. He evolves to Charizard and uses its first attack to charge it up. But I have Oracle Delcatty ready for Candy and Swampert so I am able to double attach to Cune and ko Charizard which was pretty much game. Because I knew we could draw to get in if a game went that way so I stalled a bit to see what happens and it appeared the kid won so I needed to win to get in. Which I did. Turns out for some reason he forfeited and I could've drawn to get Bryan and I both in. It all worked out since Bryan gets the 8th spot on tiebreakers. 4-2
I am sooooo glad I am in top 8 since last time we had top 8's were the SBZs and both of them I got 10th. So the 11-14 top 8 looks like this:
1 Paul (HoennAsh) w/Gardevoir
2 Sebastian (GrandmaJoner)w/Blaziken/Quaza
3 Michael w/Blaziken/Quaza
4 Brian (bluboy) w/Blaziken/Quaza
5 Tyler w/ Gardevoir
6 Kid from Oregon w/Gardevoir
7 Ross (me) w/Swampert/Suicune/Magnet/Catty/Wob or Swampert for short
8 Bryan w/Blaziken/Charizard
So we got 4 Blazikens, 3 Gardevoir and my Swampert. Besides the Oregonian and Grandma Joner the rest of us are from Washington and knew each other. So Grandma Joner and I are disappointed that we have to play each other after talking all day. Or maybe he was just disappointed that he drew the 1 Swampert. ;) They do deck checks and I see my friend Jeremy with the limited B&R deck is in top 4 of 10-. He got 2nd.
Top 8 vs. Sebastian (Grandma Joner) w/ Blaziken/Quaza
He mulliganed twice but all I got was Mudkip and he got Sparce. He got the basics but couldn't get more nrg or draw power. I was able to get a quick Swampert and nrg and basically blitzed him with it. I ko'd Sparce. Most of the day people were trying to build Quaza to ko Swamperts but he went with Blaziken ex. With 2 nrg on it I got 1/2 Reversals to gust up Blaze ex. He failed on the sleep check and I ko'd it next turn. By the time he had Quaza to ko Swampert I had 1 prize left. I still had to stall a bit to get the nrg for the next Swampert with Shard ready. And he actually saved himself with Shaman. So I just build Suicune ex instead to win. Good Game GJ. It was nice meeting you. 5-2
The rest of the top 8 went. 1 Paul w/Gard beat 8 Bryan w/Blaz/Charizard, 3 Michael w/B&R beat 6 Oregon player w/Gard, and 4 Brian w/B&R beat 5 Tyler w/Gard.
Top 4 vs. Michael w/Blaziken/Rayquaza
So I have to face my friend Michael. This seems to happen a lot. I get another start with pretty much just Swampert and blitz him with it. He's able to stop it faster than GJ did but I still got 3 prizes from it. Much later as he is building Blaziken ex. He ko's Suicune ex and Delcatty on the bench. THANK YOU SWAMPERT FOR HAVING 110 HP. I do 100 with Swampert to Blaze ex.He retreats.A little later Some how it was 1-2 prizes my lead. He Warp Points and I put up Wobbuffet, he puts up Delcatty for fear of something. I was hoping he'd put up his Blaziken with 20 damage so I could play Mudkip, Candy, Marshtomp Boost nrg, retreat Wob and do 80 to win. 2 turns later I have the wob with 2 nrg so I can retreat and do all that but first I need one of my 2 Reversals to work. The 2nd one does and I gust up the Blaze ex with 100 for emphasis. He asks if I have the 1 psychic for Wobby and I show him the Kip, Candym Marshtomp and Boost. Good game Michael. 6-2
Right as we finish Paul's Garde beat Brian's Blaziken/Quaza. I think I heard Brian misplayed takin into account a Ditto that could be Psy Shadowed when it really had 40 damage. So of the 4 Blaziken in the top 8, my Swampert took out 2 and Paul's Gard took out 2 meaning the WA state championshiop would come to
Final-vs. Paul w/Gardevoir
Midway throught the game I notice there isn't a single other person on our side of the room. I know I would atleast be close enough to watch.Oh well. We both get moderate starts and I start beating down his Wobs with Swampert. This works awhile until he gets up Gard ex and Boosts to ko. I think he ko'd a Swampert or something with Wobbuffet which then had 10 HP so I ko'd with Delcatty. He had Garde ex up but was lacking nrg so he hit my Catty with Feedback for 40. I see he is struggling to get nrg and has no nrg on Wobs so I send up Wob with 1 nrg. Somehow he now had his Wob active with 1 nrg. I figure He'll just try to build his benched Wob since I'm a turn ahead on building active Wobs and he doesn't have Gard Rs. I attach 2nd nrg to Wob. Next turn he Boosts Wobbuffet!!!!! I completely forgot about Boosting Wobbuffet. Probably because I have been playing non-boostable Wobs all day. That was pretty much game. When he had 1 prize left I had my final chance. With 2nd Wobbuffet powered and 2 Reversal in my hand he had Gard RS and benched Wob with 2 nrg. I had to gust up Gard RS and hope he didn't have an nrg in his hand for his Wob. That was the plan but both Reversals failed and I had to retreat for Swampert. Next turn he Boosted Gard ex to ko it. Good game Paul who now has the full Pacific Northwest Championship. Washington and Oregon. 6-3
So I get 2nd and 18 packs. Not bad. I was pretty happy about the whole day.(of course if I had seen the trophy....j/k) It was a well run tournament by Terry (pokeplayer). It was great seeing evertbody again and I can't wait for the GC's. I have learned 3 things from this. 1. Swampert can beat Blaziken over 50% which I was pretty sure of already. 2. Any deck that has Wobs, nrg manipulation to power Wobs quick and Reversal to take out Wobs and Gard RS has a chance to beat Gardevoir decks. 3. Pokemon Reversal is awesome.

Ross (Pidgeotto Trainer) put up a great match and it was a good tournament. Terry (Pokeplayer) did a good job but the only bad part about the tournament was that we had to wait about 2 hours but everything else was good. I think the top 8 had very good players in each division. Only one person that won from Oregon was Kenny JR in the 15 and over. Hope all our tournaments were like this. Good luck to everybody in the Gym Challenge.

Dude you got cheated. You cant play a Boost on a basic Pokemon. So unless Wobbs was evolved from Wynaut, which I didnt read, you got screwed. Boost only works on evolved Pokemon and cant be used to retreat. Those are the main stipulations for Boost Energy.

Great report by the way.

Johnny Blaze and Pidgeotto Trainer, I had played the boost that I attached to Wobbuffet that evolved from Wynaut so I didn't cheat. Just to let u know and I believe all Wynauts were evolved except 1. Hope to see new people at our Gym Challenge.

That was how I read it where PT says "I have been playing non-boostable Wobs all day" - he made the distinction between "Boostable" (evolved from Wynaut) and "non-Boostable" (played as Basics).

gj PigeottoTrainer - hopefully my card made it there in time to help you go T8 and 2nd overall!

Thanks for clearing that up. I must of missed it somehow.

HoennAsh stated....

Ross (Pidgeotto Trainer) put up a great match and it was a good tournament. Terry (Pokeplayer) did a good job but the only bad part about the tournament was that we had to wait about 2 hours

Two things made it go longer...the new software having to enter more data and the fact that I had to register a late players...

I will admit though...The official start time was 11:00 am meaning registration stared at 11:00 am...

However, I do belive that I acutally started registration before 11:00 am so it seemed like you had to wait a long time....

My apologies...

I will post a complete report later..........

Thanks for the posts guys.
I got your Swampert just in time RR. Hopefully you've gotten my cards by now or the next 2 days.
I'm glad some Swampert decks are doing well. The formats lookin a lot better than the time of the 15 pages of Ban Blaze ex. It was really 45% Blaziken 45% Gardevoir and 10% other stuff in my division and I think its gonna spread a little more with Swampert and stuff. Much better than 75% Blaziken.
I hope to see you guys again by the end of the month at some GC's. Question is will Swampert make a return trip? ;)
