What can I do to counter my friend's water deck when I use my fire?

I guess this can just be a general question on type disadvantages. I have a pure fire deck. I have a friend who uses pretty much pure water. I haven't been able to take more than two prizes in a match against him yet in 10 tries. I am incredibly in need of advice on how to overcome a deck that is built from the ground up to put your's at a disadvantage from the start. I also have a large collection of grass cards, but prefer not to take the easy way out. I know at some point when I start going to leagues and tournaments I am going to be faced with this situation so I may as well learn to deal with it now. Am I doomed to having to split my deck between types? I have tried before it just doesn't seem like there is space enough in the deck to support two energy types. I have a theory for a deck brewing that involves getting evolutions out quickly and steamrolling his basics, but other than depending on that I am lost. Thanks in advance for any help or tips you give me.

I suggest Entei and Raikou LEGEND (ERL) simply because it's a fire type but also a Lightning type as well which can hit your friend hard for weakness. Plus, ERL is fairly fast to set up, only needing a fire energy and any other energy to do 90 damage and then discard a single fire energy attached to ERL or even do 80 to anything in play that has a Poke-Power which could potentially help out in late game to get you those extra prizes you need.

Hmm I've never heard of this card, but it looks like just what I need . Seems like before it becomes playable you have to draw both the top and bottom? I'm considering throwing some colorless types in the mix. They won't require any extra energy commitments. I'm not sure how many above average colorless type cards are out there in terms of power though. By the way when it is just my friends and I playing we allow cards from any era so feel free to give advice for cards from any set if you wish.

This is in the wrong forum, but i suggest playing Lightning. It will hit Water Pokemon for x2..
Zekrom can use Fire Energies. With Outrage. And if they hit Zekrom (Who has 130 HP) then you can use Outrage to hit for 20+ 10 for each damage on Zekrom, and then x2.

Yes, you have to play both the top and the bottom at the same time onto the bench and it can't be used during your set up.

Colorless Pokemon might help out or even cards that typically don't need any specific energy for their better attacks like Zoroark. Some of the better colorless Pokemon are Cincinno and Boufalant

Uhm... as for cards from other sets, all I can think of is any Pokemon from the Delta Species sets that was originally fire but became a lightning type.

Ohhh that Zekrom looks handy, Definitly will try to get my hands on a couple of those. Thanks for the help guys and sorry for posting in the wrong section. I joined about 3 days ago so I'm still learning what goes where.

Oh yes and it seems the rainbow energy would also give 10 damage to his first attack. Perhaps a combo of rainbow energy and the gold berry tool? The first bolt strike self damage could be negated by that tool.

About 95% of the time yes. When it is just between my friends and I we don't like sticking to the strict modified format. I will be slowly easing into the competitive scene before year's end, but for now all my matches are just at home against friends.

Im assuming you mean a strategy of using emboars' pokepower to buff up tangrowth with fire energies. Good call. You guys are good ^_^

^Or you could just run Porydonk with Regice and literally win every game.

In an attempt to actually help the OP out, if you have any Delta Species cards from sets such as Dragon Frontiers and Crystal Guardians, the fire ones often have weaknesses that would be their normal type over water. For example, Heracross has a fire weakness and Gardevoir ex has a Psychic weakness despite them both being fire typed.

Also, cards in the Diamond and Pearl card run had weaknesses such as +20 instead of x2, so these fire Pokemon cards have a better chance against water than cards in other series would.
