New player decks should focus on straight forward attacking pokemon that are relatively easy to set up and play.
Donphan Prime, Charizard/Ninetales, Blissey, Sciscor/Cherrim, Kingdra, and Jumpluff all fit into this category easily. Just make sure he has enough search in the deck to get a consistent start, and enough draw in the deck to be able to work without Claydol (it will not be usable in some and targeted in the rest).
