A bunch of the songs by John Williams(writes movie theme songs)
Keiji Kondo(The Legend of Zelda)
Five Iron Frenzy
GoldFinger
Greenday
NoFx

Oh boy... You asked for it...;)

*looks at pile of CDs to the left*

Broadway musicals: Lloyd Webber (Phantom), Les Mis, RENT, Sondheim (Sweeny Todd), etc...

Japanese Pokémon movie soundtracks; anime soundtracks like the Joe Hisaishi scores for Spirited Away, Totoro, Castle in the Sky...

Vocalists: Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, Mandy Patinkin, Audra McDonald, Patti LuPone, etc..

Movie soundtracks: Return of the King, Pollock..

Old-skool soul: Tower of Power, the Spinners, Average White Band, Earth Wind and Fire, etc..

Misc. stuff: Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, Sting/the Police, Kate Bush, REM, Dave Matthews, Santana, Secret Garden, Hiroshima, Steely Dan, Sigur Ros, Moodswings, Eri Sugai, Afrocelt Sound System, Enya, the Avalanches...

Ambient: Harold Budd, Brian Eno...and DAC Crowell. Yes, I'm biased ;); besides being my dear friend, I've done the cd cover design and cover artwork for his cds on that label. If you're interested, click on 'tracks' next to each album title to see a thumbnail of the cover images.

Classical/New Music: Bach, Mozart, Gavin Bryars, Carl Stone, Mike Oldfield...

...and the list goes on and on... :)

Here are a few of my favs. in no order:

They Might Be Giants - I love this group. John Flansburg and John Linnell are hilarious and their scores stay in your head forever. Particle Man? Istanbul (Not Constantinople)? Birdhouse in your Soul? Hit me, I'm dreaming.

Yoko Kanno (Steve Conte, Seatbelts, etc.) - I fell in love with the Cowboy Bebop series. She's one of the reasons.

The Pillows - Some of the coolest rock sounds to come from Japan. You heard them all throughout FLCL.

The Polyphonic Spree - Okay, this chorus of twenty plus musicians in white robes does look like some sort of suicidal cult, but the sound is amazing. Beatles and The Beach Boys-esque. Simply beautiful.

Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum - There's been a recent revival of Jazz/Lounge singers. They are two reasons why. I'd love to be crooning like them behind a big band any day.

Sting/The Police - I don't know why I like this guy. I just do...

The Decemberists - I'm always looking for indie rockers. Feels like folk on steroids.

Propellerheads - I stumbled upon this group on iTunes. Too bad that they have not released any new albums, their "electric/techno" had to be the only of it's genre that I could tolerate.

you said it pokemom. i listen to electronic music almost exclusively, so very few people (at least in the states) know what it is i'm listening to. i am currently a huge fan of drum and bass, which has a wide array of sounds. it can be dark, hard, and fast; or it could be light and relaxing; or it could be very complex, with rhythms constantly changing. it all just depends on who you listen to. anyway, here's some of my favorite drum and bass artists:
  • black sun empire
  • concord dawn (almost unanimously admired in the dnb scene; they just released a cd titled "uprising")
  • ill skillz
  • dieselboy (easily the most renowned american dnb dj; check out "the dungeonmasters guide" or "the 6ixth session" mix cds)
  • dj dara (along with dieselboy and ak1200, he is part of the "planet of the drums" tour; check out "the antidote" or "future perfect" mix cds)
  • pendulum (they come from australia and are the new big thing in dnb; they dont have a cd out yet, but almost everything they are a part of comes out great)
  • subfocus (also new to the scene, they have the potential to be huge; their latest tune "acid test" is sick, but good luck finding it)
  • gridlok (he has a background in classical music, giving him a different perspective on music; he blew up a couple years back and is going strong)
  • e-sassin
  • loxy
  • ed rush & optical (these two have been around for a while, and have always been good; check out the tune "goodfoot" or "gas mask")
  • technical itch (he's also an old-timer in the scene; his latest big tunes are "the calling" and "the hand")
  • dom & roland (just released a new cd titled "chronology"; one of the founders of dnb and still going strong)
  • bad company (this is not your parents' bad company; this group of britons tore through dnb a few years ago with their signature tune "the nine"; they just released a mix titled "skool of hard knocks")
  • fresh (a member of the afforementioned bad company, he has made some great tunes, but some crappy ones too; my favorite from him is "temple of doom")
  • friction
  • ram trilogy (one of the big names on ram records; consists of label founders andy c ant miles, and shimon)
  • red one (he also helped found ram records; he makes mixes and trakcs that i always seem to like; check out the tunes "pitch switch" and "strangled duck")
  • andy c (arguably the best drum and bass dj in the world, his mixing skills are top notch; check out his "drum & bass arena" or "nightlife" mix cds)
  • amit (a more slow and tribal sound; some of his stuff sounds alike, but he is making more diverse stuff now)
  • klute
  • evol intent
  • keaton (he's been around forever and has been in numerous collaborations; check out the tunes "haters" or "bring it on")
  • drumsound & bassline smith (these two make lots of floor filling tunes; check out "the odyssey" or "reverence")
  • resonant evil (came up big with their track "troubleshoot" which was mixed by big name djs all over the world)
  • kemal & rob data (kemal worked with technical itch on "the calling" and has been laying out some phat stuff; rob has disappeared from the scene for a while)
  • stakka & skynet (these guys have split up to work individually, and they both are still making waves)
  • dj zinc (has a very unique sound that i usually like; he did a great remix of mobb deep's "shook ones")
  • comatron (comatron has been making some awesome tunes recently)
  • high contrast (excellent example of more relaxed dnb)

there's a lot more, but that's a good sampling of the sounds of dnb. as for other styles of music, here are the artists i enjoy listening to and have lots of respect for:
  • the chemical brothers (this duo has been making stuff from breakbeat to house, all with a more psychedelic type of vibe; good listening)
  • prodigy (if they would have released something new between 1997 and 2003, i might like them more)
  • paul van dyk (not really trance, but a lot of people call him trance; check out his live sets)
  • system of a down (mostly their older stuff like on their self-titled cd)
  • korn (i can only say i like their first two cds; the rest i flat out hate)
  • nirvana (how can you not like them; they are the last truly great rock band that i've heard)
well, sorry for making such a long reply. i'm a huge fan of the music i listen to. i actually am trying to get into electronic music production, but that's more of a hobby than a career interest. i use a program called soulseek to find most of my music. the bad thing is that a lot of drum and bass artists release 90% or more of their stuff on vinyl only, so you are almost forced to download the songs if you want to hear them in your car or on most sound systems. i wouldnt be downloading this music if i could buy it in stores.
