What was up with volunteering at worlds?

Yeah so on Friday after the grinder I'm walking about and Pokemon Pat tells me I should volunteer to help out on Saturday. So before I leave for the night I ask the front desk and they tell me yes come back tommorow at 8. So I wake up especially for it on Saturday and head down there then they say they don't need anyone. I check back throughout the day and still they do not need anyone. Then, on Sunday I go and they tell me sorry we are only taking people 18 and over. Now why is that? There was a kid who looked like he was 13 working at the Side Event league table. So he gets to? Other people there also looked under 18. I wanted to run tournaments or work at league. Then the people at the side event table were not that nice. Overheard a conversation of where to find table E. The women there is announcing where the tournaments are taking place at but they don't even know where the tourneys they are announcing are actually. Very lazy in my opinion. The answer was, "I dunno."

The other problem was saying they were full with volunteers. I show up and tell me they're full come back in an hour. I come back and there's two new people working. Example as Ice Cold in the GBA and Benlugia in side events.

Is there some connection that gets you to work/volunteer?

I understand if they were full but if people who ask to volunteer after me get in then how is that right?

Is it more about who you know than what you know?

It does seem odd sometimes. I camped out for what seemed like days last year to no avail. There needs to be some better communication between the people involved. From what it sounds like there was a disconnect between what sounded like a promise for work and advice for getting work.

The problem I noticed with the volunteers when I was there was that quite a handful of volunteers had numberous complaints against them from the staff members (the ones with the red shirts on). Complaints were mainly about some of the volunteers being lazy, sitting down on the job, not following instructions, and leaving their zone. This is most likely why they had to let a lot of these volunteers go on Saturday.

What's sad is that most of these volunteers just wanted the yellow shirt, and I even overheard some of these people talking among themselves wondering what else they would be getting besides the shirt if they were to volunteer their services for the day. I'm not saying you wanted to help because of the shirt, but I've overheard a few people state that they only wanted the shirt and wandered what else they would get with it. That kind of statement just made me shake my head, and these people eventually got what was coming to them - Termination.

I doubt it has anything to do with "who you know or what you know", because a couple of my traveling companions were able to get volunteer positions on Fri, Sat, and Sun, and they didn't know the PUI staff in person or the volunteer coordinator in person. They were asked to come back each day because the coordinators must have liked their work eithic and the hard work they were doing. These guys eventually got promoted to worlds staff because of their hard work and dedication and as a way of the staff for showing their appreciation for the hard work of these individuals. I'm sure more hard working volunteer people had such a rewarding experience, so I know it's about how hard you work and follow directions rather than take the shirt and run so to speak...

But why is a kid who is younger than me able to work?

They told me nothing about qualifications when I asked if there were any openings. Only when I went to the desk for a fourth time where they told me only people 18 or older. Ronae said that she was not bothered at all if I checked back she was happy. Don't say I was in there just for a shirt, I wanted to volunteer for the fun of it, not for stuff.

Don't you get it! You're under 18, which means you are a bungling moron who cannot be trusted. You are morally, emotionally, and mentally inferior to those over 18. There is absolutely no need to even consider allowing people your age, because anyone with any common sense will tell you that you under-18s are all the same. It's true- in fact on every person's 18th birthday, when he/she relinquishes all uselessness and stupidiy, he/she has become an infinitely better person for everything.

What you don't believe me? Don't worry, you'll understand when you turn 18. And a recent poll (made by people over 18) shows that a majority of people over 18 feel this way.

People 18 and over just aren't affected by those negative human qualities like you children are.

Exactly, there are too many people who only volunteer to get the stuff. They make their selections primarily based on people who've helped out in the past or those that they know.

Greetings,

I was one of the ppl ColdFire64 mentioned in his post. I did work with Spookies before at the Mountains Regional, although not alot. I volunterred Friday morning and was told by Ronae that she would use me to assist the characters around the areas. This was fine with me, I didn't care. I had no idea if I would get anything except the shirt, however, I didn't care. I was proud to help out. I was then stolen by Pete D. for line control and stayed in that position for quite a while. After that, over to the exit from the comp area during deck checks. I stayed in they 15+ area as a runner for scores for the rest of the day.

On Saturday morning, I was back with Spookies, working crowd control at the 15+ area and posting the pairings/standings. Did that all day. -- Wait I got 2 games in league too.

On Sunday morning, Yep you guessed it - back with Spookies. Working the 15+ crowd. Most of you in that area must have hated me and my fellow workers by then. All of us were tired - the walking dead someone said (except the guy on Red Bulls), but we kept doing it. Most of us had been there since Friday morning doing the samething, not wondering what we might get, but just enjoying ourselves.

At lunch 5 of us got quite the joke played on us by Pete and Dave - We were fired. Apparently the judges, staff, and the PUI folks were so inpressed with the 5 of us that we were promoted to staff. This was a total shock to all of us. I know some of the Main Staff got a few laughs off the reaction we had. Then we went back to work.

Working at Worlds was a blast, yes we did get some stuff (staff got some extra), but the ppl I spent 3 days with for 18 to 20 hours a day all seemed willing to do it for free. I actually fought Ronae when she gave me my support.

Thanks to PUI for letting me work for you and get that experience, and thanks to those I worked with for all the fun I had.

But if all the big events are like this, how will we have new people to replace them in time?
I.K. - You've got a connection. Me. Although I'm not much of a connection at this point, but I really could have used a shadow and you would have been prefect. If we are both in that situation again come and see me and I'll do what I can.

Before any one else gets any ideas that I can help them, I am very small on the scale and will be of no use to you, sorry.

Connections are only a very very small part of it. The main requirements were as follows:

#1 Hard Working (most important)
#2 18+
#3 a Professor
#4 For the Contructed/Unlimited/Draft/Team/Pre Re's you had to be a TO
#5 Pleasant and Easy to get along with. Also able to follow rules. (Also Very Important)

I volunteered on Saturday early, and was told to come back after lunch, well I did, and that was when they were starting the Side Events, I was asked if I was a professor and a TO, and if I had run any tournements before and I said I had (for my local leagues here in Texas) so she told me to follow her. After the first day I was told to report back because the Main guys running the side veents wanted me back to run and HJ a pre release. I was hard working both days and very pleasnat and easy to get along with (like I usually am). So I was asked to come back.

So as you see, there are certain circumstances you HAVE to meet before they even consider you. There were a few exceptions becuase of past Worlds workers who were let to volunteer. Other than those, it was as above.

I know someone who had never volunteered at Worlds before get a spot and was asked to return the next day (she was specifically asked for by a red shirt staff bc they liked her work). Sometimes they needed 18+. You know, it is PUI's call.

the same thing that happened to my bro happened to poliwag. My brother was supposed to work friday after grinder but they said come back the next day so he did and he asked again and they said come back in a hour then 2 hours then 4 hours then the next day.So my brother goes back and asks again and they tell him 1 hour then 2 hours then 1 more hour then they said no.But i noticed that when he asked they said no but my friend asked and they let him. They let alot more people volunteer that i didnt see volunteer on friday or saturday help out on sunday, and i was disapointed because my brother asked a while back to staff/volunteer at worlds and they didnt let him.

guess what guys, you ask to volunteer, nuff said. They say to check in, do that. IF YOU ASK TO BE ONE, YOU ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO GET IT. Now connections are helpful also. But pretty much, the order will go to Professors, and TO and judges for leagues. Being a LL doesnt hurt either. I get ASKED to judge GC for my area, and i accept, i forfeit my opportunity to go to worlds to help my PTO out, and i do get compensated, but i am always willing to help him out because im trying to get on staff for major events (Nats and worlds). remember, dont get mad if you dont get chosen. Just be thankful they gave you the OPPORTUNITY to volunteer.
