Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

What was your most memorable battle?

Top 8 at Tulsa Cities. I was playing Gyarados and he was playing Kingdra/Gengar.

He had me at a 4-1 lead, and kept whiffing on the correct energy. I did 90 to his Gengar, and he shadow roomed my Uxie. I warped Dos into Uxie, and koed his Gengar. 3-1. He got out a Kingdra, and only drew into psychic energy. I throw down an Expert belt, and double flash bite his Kingdra for the ko. 2-1. He set up another Gengar, and shadow rooms my other Uxie. I SSU my Uxie. I go for the ko on Gengar, and he flips tails on fainting spell. 1-1. He scooped because he couldnt win that turn.

first round of swiss at states - played against gg allin. he pooped on the table. pretty cool, but got himself banned from the game.

Worlds/Grinders 2009 in San Diego definitely.

Grinders Round 5:
Running Mother Gengar against Mother Gengar, my opponent got out 3 Gengars, Claydol, and an Uxie by T2 while I got 1 Gengar, Uxie, and a Nidoqueen. I only ran 1 Unown G while he ran 3. It came down to 1-1 Prize Cards because I kept on knocking out stuff with Nidoqueen, popped the finishing blows with my Uxie, and the last knock out was I believe... His 4th Gengar SF while he needed a heads but it turned out to be tails.

Dylan Leafavor's Dialga G:
He starts off with Dialga of course, I go first and Mesprit and Pitch Dark. He attaches and passes. Turn 2... Rare Candy! Gengar! Broken Time Space, Claydol, Super Scoop Up, then Mesprit again. Then super scoop up again, then play down 2 more Gengar with 3 SSU in my discard already. Crobat G, flash bite, poke-turn, poke-turn then Poletergeist. He looked at me like... Is this dude insane? Then knocked out his Dialga G. Good Game, lol.

Mine was at 2011 States,
I was against a gym leaders LuxChomp, who lend it to the guy i was against, I was playing GeChamp, So he was all excited about using that deck, My hand had a machop, Rare candy, Machamp but no energy, but I still ended up winning, he took 1 prize card, I didnt see a Luxuray lv x the whole game. He ended up going 6-1 I think.

1. I took six prizes in one turn against Ross Cawthon's Dragtrode at Worlds in 2006 using a Shining Rayquaza tech in my Metanite deck. The round after that, my brother did the same thing on the very last turn of the game.

2. Had a very friendly game against Tom Wise in the top 2 at Regionals in 2008. I won, but the reason I liked the game so much is because Tom's a good friend of mine and a super nice guy.

3. I 6-0'd Yamato at Worlds in 2010 with Steelix.

4. William Hung beat me with a deck I helped him put together at National in 2006. Pretty funny. Got him to sign a Sharpedo ex for me, haha.

Those are all pretty memorable. Of course, there are others that aren't so fancy, but they still hold a special place in my heart. Games against my brother, against old Poke-players like Jake Burt and Jim Ferrell, etc. etc. etc.

1. My game against William Hung at Nationals in 2006. I had played him before in a fun game a year prior, seeing him in the lobby of the hotel worlds was being held at. This was a sort of attempt at revenge, but I did get pretty lucky to get a lot heads against him. I was playing LBS, and him Flariados. He couldn't keep a lock on me, and I had a lot going my way.

2. First round of a Regionals held in New York, in 2007. I'm playing Delta (RaiEggs), and my opponent has Feraligatr d/Meganium d. I find out my Arbok d is prized, and so my hopes of fighting against this monster are looking slim. To top it off, he gets a turn 1 Feraligatr, and something else just as big and beefy. SOMEHOW I manage to pull that game out...don't ask me how, I still don't know to this day. lol

3. Recently, my sixth round at South Carolina States. I'm playing against a good buddy of mine, Collin, and we're both 5-0. He gets down to one prize, and I manage to come back from being down six prizes against him and win. I'm playing Vilegar, and he's playing LuxChomp. Another one of those don't ask me how moments.

4. My last round of Nationals in 2006. I'm facing Luke Reed, he's using Mynx, and I have LBS. If I win, I'll be 7-2, and make it in. I'm so nervous at this point because not only is this my first actual year in masters, but, the first time I would've ever made top at Nationals. I'm even shaking, which I did not WANT to do...but. lol I end up taking the game after a fast set up, and make top cut.

I know there's more, but those are the biggest ones that come to mind.

Haha yeah man, that was definitely one of my more memorable games too. Even I don't know how you managed to do that. xD

I wish I remembered that... ^^;

In top 16 at worlds 2008 I played a Japanese player with Leafeon/Palkia/Magnezone DP. It was rogue and almost beat my Empoleon. I was able to pull out a win with speed and Cess lockdown. It was one of the most memorable games I've ever played and it left me with a friend I have played at least once every year at worlds sense then.

In 2008 at Nats (I was still just a wee lad lol) I beat John Kettler's Blissey in a side event. I got all excited that I beat a guy who I knew the name of.

Haven't been playing enough nor am I good enough to have games as awesome as the vets who are now posting, but here's mine...

BC Provs, last round of swiss, I had a kind of terrible day because I'm a scrub and I go up against a Vilelostgar. We shuffle up and draw and etc and he leads Gastly/Tomb I believe, something like that. I don't remember how I set up, but I ended up with a Dialga active and a weak Cyrus chain. I had teched Weavile G that day just in case I ran into these (lol this was the only one I saw all day, let alone played). Played it down, but kept Dialga active. He lost zones 4 Pokemon and my setup is rather weak, just not drawing what I need. I'm too tired to keep up the sprays on Level Down so I just let him do it even though I have a Spray in hand, so he gets trainer lock back on. I snipe his Mime and then go back to Dialga and just sit there using Second Strike.

He cannot find another Pokemon in my 20 card hand to Lost Zone for about 12 turns. I draw, see if it's a Pokemon (it never was), and announce Second Strike. By doing this, I take my five remaining prizes, despite his Rescue Energy/Seeker shenanigans.

I didn't use Weavile at all, I think (maybe for one prize on a SF gar or something?). I didn't use Deafen either. I just mowed through it.

SUCH A BROKEN DECK GUYS.

Oh oh! Here's one that I lost... but it's super crazy!

Top 2 in a Cities Championship this season. I played Steelix and faced deck after deck with Blaziken FB techs (if I remember correctly, I played 7 opponents in all, 6 of which played some fire tech in their deck capable of one-shotting my Steelix). My top two matchup was against a good friend of mine playing Luxchomp with the Blaziken FB tech. My Steelix runs an SP Quagsire tech to deal with it, but even with the tech a 1-1 Blaziken tech is still super hard to deal with.

The balance of the games gives and takes, with my Quagsire actually giving me a chance to win. Near the end of the game, I have the choice of either using Gaia Crush to KO a Pokemon (and therefore leaving me vulnerable to Blaziken) or using Energy Stream to pull another Special Metal onto the Steelix. It's a pretty important decision, so I count the number of Crobat G's, Poketurns, and possible Junk Arms my opponent has left to aid in knocking out the Steelix. After about a minute of counting, I finally announce my attack: Energy Stream. I know I made the right play cause my opponent lets out a sigh. My undamaged Steelix will actually be able to survive Blaziken's attack! My opponent brings the Blaziken up and swings for 160 (minus damage for the Metal Energy). I look down at a hand full of Moomoo Milk and Life Herbs that I saved up.

Before I go on with the rest of the story, I should tell everyone that I am TERRIBLE at flipping coins. I'm also pretty good at not believing in the "myth" of bad luck (woe is I and only I!), but many of my friends who play with me can vouch that I just can't flip a heads to save my life.

So yeah, with 2 Moomoo Milk and 2 Life Herb, I manage to flip all tails. My Steelix HAS to survive, so I count up all my cards and realize that I have a single Life Herb remaining in my deck of 6 cards. My hand is now depleted except for a couple of cards, including a Volkner's Philosophy. I don't want to deck myself and I still need to take 3 prizes, but I have to hit that Life Herb this turn (there's a Garchomp X staring me down from the other side of the field). So I count again... and again. I know my deck inside and out, so I deduce that I have 1 Judge and 1 Bebe's Search remaining between my 6 card deck and my 3 prizes. Provided that I hit one of those, I can buy myself another turn with a Bebe's or a few more turns with the Judge. I finally play my Volkner's for 5 cards, leaving 1 card. My Life Herb's there, so I play it immediately and finally land a heads. I sigh in relief, but then realize that I didn't draw into my Bebe's or my Judge. I OHKO the Blaziken, and my prize? A Smeargle. My opponent didn't even have the DRE for the Garchomp X and draw/passes. My last card in my deck? A Basic Metal.

Yes, the Bebe's Search and the Judge were my remaining two prizes. As I realize that I've decked myself, I have to laugh it off. It was my goal to win that one tournament with Steelix even though I faced autoloss after autoloss (seriously! I faced one opponent playing a 2-2 Blaziken FB/Victreebel deck who only attacked with Blaziken and cycled it in twice with Aaron's Collection... still managed to win that one somehow), and I just decked myself with the worst of luck. I take my second to last prize and tell my opponent good game since I have no cards remaining in my deck.

Nationals 2009

I was playing Gengar in Top 64 against Porygon-Z. I had a terrible start, he had opened with Absol SW and trashed my hand. But I'm a stubborn guy so I didn't wanna scoop. It's a super long match, and I managed to come back. Time's called, it's 2 to 2 in prizes. I have no energy left in my deck and I used up my Night Maintenance already. My last energy was one of my two prizes. It's his turn, he knocks me out, I flip and get heads on Fainting Spell. That ties up the game, and it was one of the most amazing flips ever. I took one of my prizes and it happened to be the psychic energy. It was the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me in a game of Pokemon, maybe that's why I can't get heads on anything anymore lol. I proceed to attach to Gengar and Shadow Room his other damaged Porygon-Z for game.

It actually happened this saturday at Regs.

Playing the last round of swiss. I have to win, in order to make top 8.
I play luxchomp he plays donphan.

I go first, and open with an active luxray and dialga G on my bench, with dialga G lvl X in my hand. I attach DCE to Dialga and pass. He ko's my luxray, and i promote Dialga, draw, Cyrus' for a metal energy, and D'oh! it's prized, so I just lvl up and retreat my dialga.
A few turns later, I have garchomp C active, ready to snipe, except when I search for the lvl X, it turns out to be prized too. 2nd D'oh!
At some point of the game, he leads with 2 prizes left to my 5, but somehow, through crobat poisonig, and carefully selecting what to send active, I still manage to win the game, in the last turn of time.

I had a bad hand with my vilegar round 5 of CA states. I'm 3-1 so a loss is pretty much a death sentence. He takes five straight prizes. I finally get a twins and get a vileplume and gengar out, then I poltergeist for six straight prizes.
