When do sets generally go out of print?

When they are rotated out? After a year or so? When a new set comes out (making only the most recent set in print)? I've never quite figured this out.

Just to let you know.. Platinum Arceus has been rotated out for ages, but you can easily buy them at your local Walmart. Same goes for Call of Legends.

That's because of a couple of factors.

1. TPCi printed way more than they should have, and the product is still sitting in shelves.

or

2. TPCi overestimated the popularity of Pokemon TCG, and people aren't buying enough product. I doubt this is the case today, but probably was the case a couple years ago.

I like how they overprint product though, it means that I can rest easy knowing that I can buy a pack of Pokemon TCG cards 2 years from now, especially theme decks. Something I couldn't do with MTG.

I know this, I have seen them before, but it doesn't quite answer my question. Like, is Next Destinies or Dark Explorers still in print? Is Plasma Storm even still in print now that Plasma Freeze is out? I know that you can always find older, OOP sets if you look hard enough.

In some Targets in my area I can still find Crystal Guardians packs, even though it's been out of print for ages now.

0____0 Oh I'd love to play some draft or sealed with those! and and... Castaway for decks!
We never have old stuff left over here :( Now if you could find a box of ex Dragon Frontiers... *_*

Do we have an official number for when sets go out of print? I would assume the-powers-that-be don't want to tie their hands by giving such an answer (and I don't blame them). Anyone know if we've had any recent examples of sets getting multiple print runs that were clearly separated by something significant (e.g. the release of the set)?

Otherwise I think it depends upon perceived demand; if a set was popular and sellers want more, I can definitely see official, later printings of said set, though probably only for things like tins and the like. I don't think Pokémon has the popularity to justify an additional print run (at least anymore) of sets well after the release.

You mean you haven't bought and resold them. Some people would love to have those.

They come in blisters with theme decks and other useless things that looks like the store re-packaged, so in the end, I'm not gonna pay $20 just to get 1 out of print booster pack. If we were talking like, WOTC era then perhaps, but not for Crystal Guardians.

The toys r us near my house does have single booster pack blisters of most Diamond & Pearl sets though.

I would agree with this. Now that Plasma Freeze is out, what is the demand for Plasma Storm? Hardly enough to justify another print run one would think. If there was a run, how big would it be? 1/100th of the original? Seems inefficient.

Instead, I would think they forecast how many booster packs/boxes to print, and that's it. With enough leftovers to get repackaged into blisters, tins, and eventually sold in bulk to those remarketers that bundle very, very old packs (and theme decks!) into their checkout-aisle products.

But hey, I'm just guessing.

Those Arceus things are at Target as well...
Plus they still have some of those promo blisters from the first Black & White.
One Super Target nearby has a few of the HeartGold/SoulSilver promo blisters as well.

Plus a bunch of old Starters (Diamond & Pearl stuff).

Toys R Us is ridiculous in charging full price for older blisters or items with packs.
They still had a bunch of the Two Album things, and one of every "ability" tin.
Plus stuff like Next Destinies, and even a few Call of Legends.

At Target today they had some 2 pack deals that come with sleeves.
Two had Black & White & Next Destinies, the rest just Black & White.

They also seem to have redone those 3 pack blisters as well.
Those used to come with either a Scraggy or Meowth foil.
The ones I saw recently were just random foils in the front.
A few were stuff like Black Kyurem & Zoroark.
However there were some with stuff from HeartGold/SoulSilver as well.
Plus since they are in front, you really can't see which packs are in there.

You can usually tell what packs they are by the colours of the top and bottom borders.
HGSS change colour from one half to the next.

Just a reminder; the bulk of the money made on the game is coming from selling boosters to distributors, which in turn make their money selling to stores that get the most sales from... random little kids and the like, buying booster packs in lieu of a toy. Not players. Not collectors.

Long as the game is taken care of, I can live with this. Actually, even if it ruined the game I could live with it; Pokémon isn't my life. ;-) I just will continue to stick around while the game is maintained at what I believe to be an adequate level, but I will make allowances for the fact that as a player I am not the primary target market.

They go right out of print after usually one or two print runs. It varies per set. Sometimes they have more, but usually they don't have more than two. Once a set is released, they usually don't have another print run. The next set is printed and stored, but I believe by the time a set is released, it has stopped being printed.

Well I opened x2 POP box sold at walmart... and I got a POP 3 and POP 5 pack. I don't think we can tell... when it's out of print.
