Who Gon Stop Me Huh? - Top 8 Masters Oregon States Report

Hello there.

I make the tedious 3 hour bus ride down to Olympia where I met up with Kenny, Ashley, Amelia and Chris for another 3 hour ride to get into Salem. Did not get Kool-Aid squeezers but I did decide to try one of those Dorito tacos, I couldn't really taste the shell, so that was a rip off.

Chris Fullflop joins us for Oregon States but just to do coverage and stuff which was really convenient for me because I wanted to get recorded matches for my channel FriedChickenNRice (best channel around)

To be honest, my head wasn't really in the game for this States. I hadn't really tested in the week leading up to it. I knew I wanted to play CeleTwo but unfortunately I only had 2 Mewtwo and I didn't feel comfortable running deck with only two. So last minute, I decide to run Zeels. Me, Zane Nelson, Trevor Whiton, Ian Whiton and Kenny Wisdom all decide to run the same exact list for the event.

I end up sleeping on the edge of a bed, and never get sleep because I'm honestly just too worried about falling off...I'm also a light sleeper, etc.

I arrive, turn in my deck list immediately because it was printed the night before and I'm pretty much ready to play. Talk to some of the people I know from WA and OR (don't really know any of the Canadian players :/) I end up having a test match with Jacob Van Wagner, mirror match to be precise and I remember just getting a horrible start and it ended up being close (down 1 prize) but I lost.

Round 1 vs PokeDad: Mirror
Sorry I don't remember your name but I recall having a god awful start. Didn't really draw any supporters but I did manage to set up eels and kept drawing into my Thundurus and Zekroms, so I used those to try and grab prizes where I could. I saw him drop a Terakion and that kinda worried me but he goes for a PONT and whiffs on energy while the Terakion just sits there to be KO'd, I somehow get a Pluspower and Bolt Strike it away. I finally draw into supporters, pick up speed and win the game rather easily.

1-0

Round 2 vs Allen Something: ReshiPhlosion
I was surprised to see this deck around still. He runs Reshiram EX in this which is awfully weird. Off the bat I'm able to Charge a Thundurus and he opens Collector getting 2 Cyndaquil and a Vulpix. Being the smart player I am, I catcher KO the Vulpix and he ends up slowing down a great deal. Next turn he double Communications into 2 Quilavas and I end up Catchering to KO another one. He then plays a Typhlosion and starts attacking with Reshiram EX. So I two shot the Reshiram using Thundurus and Zekrom and then I recall setting up a Zekrom EX to KO his Typhlosion and from there I think he scoops the game.

2-0

Round 3 vs Ben Clanton: Donphan/Yanmega/Zoroark
THIS MATCH WAS A NIGHTMARE...I saw the Phanpy and was pretty sad. I open Collector and notice...wait a second, BOTH OF MY MEWTWOs are prized. Things couldn't get any worse. So I basically spend the whole game trying to attack into him using my yellow guys against his brown guys. He scores a KO using Yanmega to snipe Tynamo (I played too many down like an idiot), and this game doesn't get any better. Lame...he mentioned not playing since last July...based on the deck I wasn't surprised, lol.

2-1

Round 4 vs ?: CMT
I T1 Charge and slowly set up but this guy has the cards to set up at T1 Tornadus and does 80 to my Thundurus. However, after he set up that T1 80 he had no other cards in hand and he proceeds to whiff on much of anything while I sweep him with Thundurus. It was a one sided game. Sorry.

3-1

Round 5 vs Albert Du: CaKE
He's one of the players from WA that I played during Cities a few times. The previous round he had lost to Kenny so I wasn't too worried. I end up getting a fast Thundurus and then KO one of his Voltorbs with Catcher. He goes for Energymite, gets 1 energy...I recall him trying to set up a Kyurem so he could KO my Tynamos but I quickly two shot it before he can Glaciate using my Mewtwo. He energymites again for 1 energy...and then I proceed to just clobber him. Electrode is not good anymore folks.

4-1

Round 6 vs Conor Dowd: Mirror
We joked about me playing him and crushing his dreams. It turns out that it happens. He opens Zapdos and Shaymin, two tech cards I disagree with. I set up a quick Thundurus and KO his Zapdos due to weakness. I then proceed to Catcher his Tynamos and KO them with Thundurus and he's never able to set up. I beat him 6 prizes to none....very one sided. Sorry.

5-1

Round 7 vs New Guy: Truth-ish deck
I got paired down so I figured that I'd have to win out in the final round or I wouldn't get in. He opens Tornadus and benches Oddish and I'm like...WTF...I set up Thundurus and gang and put early pressure on him. He then plays a Donphan and I end up having no way to one shot it, so I'm forced to two shot it. HOWEVER, while he's doing that he's been EQ'ing to put damage onto his benched Oddishes and Solosis that he's never able to evolve. He plays a second Donphan and I'm forced to two shot it as well. However, this time he misplays and EQ's to KO his own two Oddishes so he could lose the game. Yeah...he lost it for himself. I didn't feel proud about that win at all but the next turn I had pluspower + fully set up Zekrom EX in hand so I had the game anyway.

6-1

Round 8 vs Kevin Krupnik: CMT
This guy was undefeated and I actually end up having a great match with him. We trade prizes but somewhere in the game I miss on energy and am forced to pass, it puts me behind by a prize. He then starts the Mewtwo war and so I KO his Mewtwo with mine, he plays another one down to KO mine. We're at 3-2 with him winning. I make a stupid mistake and instead of just trying to grab a Catcher prize with a non-EX attacker...I drop down Mewtwo...go for the KO and bring it down to 1-2 me winning. To be fair I didn't think he'd have all the cards to set up another Mewtwo but he did and I lose. I feel bad about making that mistake but I learned from it. Never play Mewtwo unless you can assure you'll win the game. Have to calculate the prizes perfectly.

6-2

I make Top 16 @ 12th seed. I know I'm facing the Durant player, I can play against Durant easily so I wasn't too worried. However, I heard the guy is really lucky with crushing hammer flips and I hate getting crushing hammered sacked out of a win. Ask Kenny Wisdom. Amelia, Alex McNeil, Kennan, Zane Nelson Jacob Van Wagner and Polo Le out of the people I know make top cut so that's pretty cool. Zane is also facing Durant in Top 16 so I figured we both had it.

Top 16 vs Andrew Lowe: Durant

Game 1
I set up early Thundurus and proceed to Catcher to take cheap prizes with Disaster Bolt, only setting up Tynamos in the background. I eventually play a Zekrom and start using Bolt Strike to kill his Eviolited ants, he gets me into a tough spot a lot of times, but luckily I'm able to get Super Rod off a couple times and I had to late game Sage which was risky but it got me all the Switches and DCEs I needed to stop the Catcher shenanigans and I pull the game off.

1-0

Game 2
This time he only gets 1 Durant out and devours for 1, I set up Thundurus and proceed to Disaster Bolt for a couple prizes. This time I only set up the Thundurus and then I eventually play down an Eelektrik, it was a liability but it helped me a ton. He would Catcher it up but at least I was able to put energy onto the Thundurus and then switch back to the active. I pull off this game as well. Both games I ended with about 15+ cards in deck so that was nice.

2-0

I go on to face Chris Stotts who is a relatively good Oregon player so I was worried. I was mainly worried because ZekEel matches are whoever is luckier and can grab the first prize etc. So it could go either way. I end up recording this and this will be on my channel shortly.

Top 8 vs Chris Stotts: Mirror

Game 1
I set up early Thundurus and all he has is a Zekrom EX and Tynamo, I Catcher KO the Tynamo and looking at the match on camera later the day I noticed his hand was god awful, he was holding like 4 DCE and Junk Arm or something. I proceed to two shot the Zekrom EX using Thundurus and Zekrom and he just scoops.

1-0

Game 2
This game I think I overextend my resources a bit, I Sage and Junk Arm way too much in the beginning and while I do take a decent lead...I begin to slow down a lot...near the end of the game I'm forced to Juniper so I drop down Zekrom EX because I didn't want to run out of attackers. In the end I fish for my Super Rod which would have won me the game but it was prized...lame (I lost because he was able to two shot the Zekrom EX)
EDIT: Now that I remember, I just had really unplayable hands near the beginning, no basics, not much of anything, so I was forced to waste those Junk Arms and Sage's to really get anything going. Pretty much bad luck both Game 2 and 3.

1-1

Game 3
Screw this game...seriously. I get a great start with Thundurus and Eels but I miss a supporter for like 7 turns so I sit there doing nothing. He has Eviolite on his Thundurus so I can't one shot it with Zekrom either...it was just a pain. It was then that I realized how good Eviolite is in ZekEels, I didn't run any in my build. Near the end I have a chance to win the game by Catchering his Mewtwo for game but I am an energy short, I instead Catcher up his Eelektrik with hopes of stalling him out, he he topdecks the Switch to win it. GGs.

1-2

So once again, I miss my chance at a trophy. Despite many second places Cities and Top 8'ing States I still have no piece of glass to hang on my wall from the game of Pokemon. BUT I WILL AFTER CANADA.
