Cool im glad to see them branching out. Honestly i hate the vanilluxe line but i love golurk. Hopefully this is a step towards releasing pokemon games in all languages at one time.

Don't really like the ice cream Pokes, but I do like the Golett and Golurk designs he made. Not to mention he gave them an interesting typing of Ghost/Ground.

Pretty cool info- would of never known, interesting they added the Mandibuzz line late development too. Is there western artists that do art for the tcg (that aren't from contest)? Just curious.

James Turner designed artwork for a card? Aaaaaaahh! :DD

Totally gonna want that for my special cards collection... I remember him mentioning in an interview how he presented his design idea for the Vanillite family to Sugimori, and Sugimori "laughed".

I have no personal ties to him or anything, I just like pointing out his pokemon to little people and telling them how those critters were the first ones ever designed by a British fellow. I'm also a bit of an art nerd.

I like the Vanillish line. It's just a simple three-stage Ice evolution line. We've never really had one before, since pure ice-types are so rare.

Where was that interview? I'd like to read it.

While trying to dig up the interview, I learned that when Mandibuzz sits on a Vullaby to keep it warm in the nest, the two halves of the skull that they wear line up.

No interview though.

There's an interview in Japanese on gamefreak.co.jp, but google translate turns it into nonsense more or less.

'Everyone please take care of Baniputchi (Vanillite). Therefore please cute!'

Close enough, I guess.

Personally, I think Golurk was his best work, especially considering how awesome it was in the Reshiram/Zekrom movies.

After spending enough time on these forums, that makes sense compared to some of the other posts I've seen here.

I think this was it. I may have run this through a different translator at the time, because my browser's auto-translate is giving me different results than I remember:

Thought his character, lots of people around the world
is fun to imagine that get played.
Then, Sugimori art director, his ideas have
fun even when you went to see the reaction, the usual Sugimori
, "I want to laugh!" or "I want to surprise!" Toka just
wanted.

There's also a pic of him at the end holding up the game boxes.

I also want to make an apology since I was one of those at the beginning going around telling people he was American, only finding out he's actually from England later. Sorry!

Did anyone actually like the ice cream Pokemon? I like the fact that he brought Buzzards into the series, that was pretty original. Everything else though, I don't quite understand...

I agree, I never liked the ice cream Pokemon either...the first 2 were ok I guess, but making a kinda creepy 2 headed one was just a bit too much...

Golett and Golurk were designed to be parodies of the super robots you see in Japanese anime, they even fly using rocket boosters in the anime (also reflected by their ability to learn fly in game). Golurk in particular looks a lot like MS Zeong from the original Gundam series, even more so when in flight mode as in that anime, the Zeong was incomplete when fielded and lacked legs, so it had rockets to move around.
