Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Why Changing Format wont change the fact its still a crapshoot

ive been outplaying people for ages.
im not saying i like the current format.
the fact that they would change it, no matter how bad it is
is rediculous
In the 10 months that our season has gone through
we have standard lists
we have a downpact idea how decks run how to counter them effectively

giving us 2 months to, hey create your own new format kiddos
umm playtest everything, and find any combos that works
is a chilidish way to approach this problem from nintendo instead of tackling anotherway

As an ex-hardcore player you want the time to study everything know everything downpact
a 2 month time constraint is rediculous dont you think?

sable donk beatable?
yes, why?
because i have created a deck that can counter it effectively and can be competitive with the rest of the format
people's creativity has gone down in this game
if people actually looked at the cards we have
you can outplay anything you want.

personally with new rule changes this opens many many possibilities that before was not possible
new engines that can be created
but people find it easier to qq
the answers out there you just have to find it

yes a deck-like sabledonk gets advtanges,
but what weakness does it have that you can use to your advantage?
everything has a weakness, how do you out play something that can kill your pokemon in a shot right away?
are there pokemon that can survive the initial blow? can you base a deck around this pokemon?

Sabledonk ,like in starcraft, would be considered a cheesy strategy
thus having little to none late game
So what can you do to survive the early game, but pull out in late game?
there are options people
you just have to find them

it is a card game after all, luck will happen but there are answers

if you are so great that you can counter sabelock and everything else so quickly you should have no problem making a new deck out of HGSS on cards... :thumb:

Did you just call me a net decker? Don't make accusations you can't back up, don't ever call me a kid either, thats a big insult where I come from. I have NEVER and repeat NEVER netdecked. My complaints come from not my issues with not having cards but the new players that just joined the game in the last two months. I come from a small town in central California, two years ago the league in my town had a grand total of two players, myself and my brother. We now have over 20 players close to 30 on some days and a majority of these players entered the game recently building meta decks because they came other card games and had the ability to build a good deck WITHOUT net decking. Sure they asked advice from players like myself, the league leader, and others who have top cut at a premier tournaments but they didnt steal lists off line. These players who each must have spent close to a 100 bucks (just an average which is pretty low considering that uxie X for 35 bucks is a pretty good deal) have just lost these cards while only using them for 3-4 months. Do you think these people are going to stay in pokemon TCG when this rotation happens? You better believe they wont be sticking around. And if I was in their place neither would I. Last year when they rotated and made the format MD-on they told us that next year would be RR-on and the same number of sets would be removed each year. I understand that they did not expect the rule change but that brings me to me next point, THE EASIEST WAY TO AVOID ALL THIS IS TO POST-PONE THE RULE CHANGE! that fixes the problem with no rotation and no bans!

its so simple..
ok kid..
maybe you should have advised them.. "hey, this is going to be rotated out soon, I would build up a good amount of cards from SV on.. That is a good chance of a rotation.. If you need a uxie Lv.x or some techs some of the more expereienced players can probably help you out for a tournament."

I know that rotation is HGSS on, but still you get the point.

Sonnets are a horrible analogy. Shakespeare was not constrained in his vocabulary (and rather detestably created new words, effectively cheating to maintain meter), and words from which one can choose are obviously far more analogous to legal sets than the words he actually chooses to use, which are far more comparable to the 60-card cap on decks.

Shakespeare was not limited in words from which to choose, but rather how many he could use at a time. Players have always been limited in how many cards they can use at a time, but their proverbial 'vocabulary' (that is, cardpool) just got smaller. So now we also have fewer cards from which to choose; having a small vocabulary would have killed Shakespeare's sonnets.

Of course I agree with your general sentiment but that analogy was so bad I had to point it out.

It also doesn't hurt when you get to create/popularize words that didn't previously exist. That'd be like getting to play Pokemon with Create-a-Card forum monstrosities...

P.S. Shiftry just poisoned all of your Pokemon in play. Good luck.

I just don't GET IT! If P!P DOESN'T, everyone complains, and if they DO rotate, we have scrubs and people complaining because they can't win without donks.

Pokemon just can't win. That's really sad.

No, Pokemon does win if it's just scrubs complaining. :)

Scrubs are inherently detrimental to the spirit of the game, since they - by definition of the term - try to play a game that nobody else plays, subsequently pressuring people to play their fake game with them.

Let the scrubs complain, because this is really good news. Thanks for listening to us, P!P.

P.S. disclaimer: I am not claiming that op is a "scrub."

this guy gets it!

This thread is so dumb. Good players who have been begging for creativity for the past 2 years finally get what they are asking for. I am beginning testing HGSS on with the entire Chicago crew beginning Friday and we wont stop until we find dozens of amazing decks. This is our time to get off out butts and test, test, test. Some people have forgotten that this game isn't all about auto-pilot on.

True, and I'm certainly not complaining , just pointing that out. Everyone should have something to deal with Donphan.

Meh, Yanmega is playable in literally anything and is really good at walling Donphan. If you get it ready early enough, it takes them 3 turns to KO you and -- though it takes you the same amount of time to KO them w/o PlusPowers -- they spread 10 to all of their bench at the same time. Plus you can retreat out of their assault and do some tricks with Seeker.

Im sooo envious... Can I just participate in us nats or something T_T?
No the possible good format is ours  Anyways I think that nats isn't a crapshoot, you need actual SKILL now instead of the"my big brother gave me sabledonk and i just screwed your points because of a lucksack no skill deck"

Haley Brooks (aka Jenny Lewis-you know said:
What, a new Game? You didn't say there'd be a new game!

The way I figure it, even if this early format change doesn't work out perfectly, it will feel like Super, Mario Bros... 3!!! Compared to what we would have otherwise (Rad Racer with the Power Glove). I wish they were doing it sooner, however.

I'm actually pretty psyched to see how a lot of different people do at nats. There have been a lot of new, successful players who have started up in the last few years or so, and I feel like nats will sort out who really learned a lot over those 2 or 3 years and know the game, as opposed to those who just know luxchomp or gdos or something.

Nats is going to be so screwed up, we have no prior results to go on(other than at best SKETCHY JPN results) so it will be cool to see what does well.

Hopefully i'll be in the half that has learned what to do in the past 2-3 years :p
also grats on t4 @ Regs

I mean REALLY! You shouldn't make decks becouse "oh no the meta!" no dudes/chicks... i mean a deck in my opinion should me made under these 3 rules:
1.- You like it
2.- Its fun
3.- You know how to win under many circumstances.

Not because the format lets you win or not. If a a good player outstands because with the cards he has or wants to use he can kick but.

-So this rotation will be awsome. Im already playtesting HGSS-on. Whats wrong with that? Arent there any cool things we can develop. We arent getting just 2 months to fix this, we are in april people... we are geting a heads up right now.

Stop whining and start playing!

PS. These Nats and Worlds if rotation accurs they will be AWSOME and exiting >_< :D!

Perfect!

Kettles said it best- let the scrubs complain. "Oh no, I can't chain cyrus's, what will i do  "

Read what Jim Roll said, or Chris's posts. This is a GREAT idea , taking a stale , luck based format and turning it into something I am really looking forward to. Welcome back deck building, testing and skill. And the beauty is that- like worlds 2002- there will be no prior events so there will be NO net-decking for Nationals. Put the time in, get yourself a solid trainer engine and test.

Chris said it best. Give everyone the same card pool 24 hours before an event and I guarantee you the best players will rise to the top. In this case we have over 2 months to prepare so what's the problem?

Again, this is a great idea for US Nationals- MAJOR props to p!p if this happens! :thumb:

I'm just gonna be honest here...

IF you really couldn't see the handwriting on the wall months ago that this shift at least had a 50/50 chance of happening then you were PURPOSELY AVOIDING LOOKING AT SAID WALL. And if you are only just now getting around to maybe start thinking about testing stuff out when the set scans have been available for you to at least proxy-test with for months, whose fault is that??

This early rotation, if it happens, will only take place if it is proven the format is unhealthy without that change. Accept the way things are, or might be, plan accordingly, and make the best of what you have to work with.

You cannot argue with a straight face that rotating to HS-on somehow kills creativity. Did you miss how many decks Dialga G Lv.X alone shut down? Spiritomb stopped every single Fossil deck. And I sure loved drawpassing and watching my opponent go through his entire deck, with all 3 of my Pokemon getting KOd before I could play a Trainer.

HS-on is the single best thing that could happen to the competitive game at this time. It almost completely kills off the donk element and there are no hard counters so everything can be played.

If you want to argue about how Pokemon didn't give you enough time to get ready for the rotation, fine, do that. But when every single good player (anyone who's won anything worthwhile) agrees that this rotation has been a godsend for competitive play, it's just silly to argue otherwise.

Think about this.

EVERYONE should know the play for BRs is going to be Sableye and the only thing close to a counter is a deck running spiritomb.

Moving on to Nats you should KNOW that if there is no rotation, the BR meta should carry over.

As such the good player should already have the current format with the rulechange down and with that, should put their energy into testing what they don't already know (i.e. playing in a hgss-on format).

Just saying...take this mind set and the time we DO have to prepare is plenty...

No matter what they decide, these statements that "NO ONE WILL PLAY NATS" are so ludicrous. Regardless of the format, Nationals will be another gigantic, fun-filled, 3-day event.

The argument that a midseason rotation turns Nationals into a crapshoot holds no water. You could almost argue the opposite: that a midseason rotation favors good players. Why? Because good players are the ones that develop new deck ideas. The mediocre players are the ones who simply copy decklists. A midseason rotation gives less opportunities for copying other peoples' ideas & deck lists because it forces players to show up with new decks.
