Why do we even play Mewtwo EX?

Hey pokegym community, I have been pondering a question for a while so here it is.... Why do we have Mewtwo? Ok Ok i know you are thinking by now well thats an obvious question because he is insanly broken. But think about it for a second. What in our format makes mewtwo broken.... AHA Mewtwo EX makes Mewtwo EX broken! Ok so in your deck why do you personally run mewtwo? Well the reason i run it is so i can counter other mewtwoes. Does anyone actually use mewtwo as a main attacker? And i dont wanna here Mewtwo/ Gardevoir because NO one really even runs that deck and expects to do exceptionally well with it. And even in MTC your main attacker is tornadus ex and tornadus and regigigas and other exs! The only reason we have mewtwo is to counter mewtwo! When i see my opening hand at a tournament and my only pokemon is a mewtwo i do not like that hand because it will be killed by a mewtwo. Anyways most games played are either mewtwo wars or games where everyone runs 2 but NO ONE plays a single one down! Then there is the whole resistance thing on darkrai that makes it even worse. So i was wondering what if no one played mewtwo? Would mewtwo even be good anymore since it gets two shoted by everything and cant do exceptionally good damage unless you waste all of your energies on it. But anyways this is just my thought. What i really want to here is yours. Discuss!!!

Mewtwo counter terrakion, and other random stuff. Paired with energy manipulation, he allows a suprise KO from practically nowhere. Even if I was the only perosn on earth running Mewtwo, he'd still be worth running. Heck, the turn one 40 damage acheievd with a DCE is nothing to scoff at either.

i will give you the surprise ko thing with shaymin which is really nice but we have tornadus for terrakion and most terrakions run mewtwo themselves. a turn one 40 in my opioinion isnt worth the turn one 2 prizes your opponent will probably take

Yes, when playing CMT I actually run Mewtwo as the main attacker. It is hands down one of the best attackers in the game and will be until it's rotated. Big body, scalable attack, donk power, etc.

Basic reason? He's just about the best splashable attacker in the format. He's in the top 5 or 10 out of ALL attackers out there. 170HP and a DCE attack of almost unlimited potential.

In the deck I was using, he was a viable 5th attacker that I needed pretty desperately.

The format consists of heavy attackers and a source of energy acceleration so Mewtwo is a quick and easy way to return heavy damage.

One of my losses came at Nats where I played against a Zekeels deck and at the end of the game my opponent pulled out a THIRD mewtwo EX. Game, Set, Match.

All I could think about was that I totally did not expect someone to tech in three Mewtwo EX's. Which made me wonder how someone could afford three mewtwo EX's and how powerful my deck would have been had I ran three or four instead of two.

Which brought me to wonder about how many people will run when it's in the tin.

What happens when mew ex comes out? He is even more splashable.the ability to copy any attack is amazing not only could you counter mewtwo, you could counter their deck with their own counters.

Mewtwo undeniably is a great card. Afterall, 2 of the T4 at Nats played 3x lines, and Hornung has attributed a fair amount of his success to the fact that he played the heavy Mewtwo line. That being said, it isn't broken by any stretch, and I doubt it will be as big of a factor in the next format. The loss of Shaymin makes it much harder to quickly load Mewtwo with multiple energies, and many of what I think will be popular attackers are difficult for Mewtow to KO because they either have low energy attacks (Garchomp/Empoleon), resistance (Darkrai) or discard enrgy after attacking (Rayquaza EX).

Going into nationals, a lot of players seemed to forget what made Mewtwo EX so good in the first place, and so they dropped their Mewtwo count. In my opinion, Darkrai EX was the cause of this, because it is significantly more difficult for Mewtwo to sweep its board. However, Mewtwo is still most effective against decks without Mewtwo. The other big advantage to Mewtwo decks is that Mewtwo still makes a great backup attacker. If you're playing a matchup that is really bad, you could always engage the opponent in a Mewtwo war and hope for the best (and if they didn't have Mewtwo in the first place then that was even better for you.)

In other words, Mewtwo is played because it effectively counters everything (including itself.) At the moment, it has no real counter (aside from itself). This means that since if you are playing any deck, Mewtwo will counter you. If a card counters you in this way, and you do not have a response, you will lose. So you need a counter for their counter. Since Mewtwo counters everything, your only option is to play your own Mewtwo. Hence you play Mewtwo in your deck. If it sounds like I'm saying that Mewtwo is only good for the Mewtwo war, and therefore repeating you, then you missed something key. Mewtwo is used to counter not only Mewtwo, but also almost every other card.

In the next format, I don't think that Mewtwo will see play in the same way that it did in the HS-on format. This is because we lose the incredible draw power that we had in the HS-on format. This is because it will be more difficult (if not altogether impossible) to run Mewtwo in everything. I actually believe that this will make decks built around Mewtwo more powerful than they were before!

Its a good attacker.
I guarantee you that even if mewtwo wasn't weak to itself people would still run it.

Also what Unfallible said is right. If your deck runs mewtwo and your opponent does not, you already have a huge advantage. You mention 'everything' two shooting mewtwo, but the thing is that the only things that I can think of are decks that have energy accel, and already run mewtwo.
Just look at quad terrak/ lando vs zeel/darkrai with mewtwo. Unless the fighting decks run mewtwo, they will give up 3 prizes to an eviolited mewtwo with 4~5 energy.

I think you answered your own question. You are running Mewtwo to deal with other Mewtwos. Therefore, Mewtwo must be good in the first place if you need to have something to counter it.

As has been posted previously, Mewtwo is good, but not absolutely neccessary.

John Roberts won Nationals by playing 0 Mewtwo.

If I am not mistaken, the Canadian Nationals was won with a deck with 0 Mewtwo.

The card is VERY VERY VERY good, no doubt.

Let's face it, when you attack with mewtwo, you know you are giving your opponent 2 prizes too.

Question: Does anyone ever actually use Mewtwo's Psydrive? It's just strange to me to let such an amzing move go to waste; sure it reqiures specific energy but it does way more than X Ball for less energy.
