Hey pokegym community, I have been pondering a question for a while so here it is.... Why do we have Mewtwo? Ok Ok i know you are thinking by now well thats an obvious question because he is insanly broken. But think about it for a second. What in our format makes mewtwo broken.... AHA Mewtwo EX makes Mewtwo EX broken! Ok so in your deck why do you personally run mewtwo? Well the reason i run it is so i can counter other mewtwoes. Does anyone actually use mewtwo as a main attacker? And i dont wanna here Mewtwo/ Gardevoir because NO one really even runs that deck and expects to do exceptionally well with it. And even in MTC your main attacker is tornadus ex and tornadus and regigigas and other exs! The only reason we have mewtwo is to counter mewtwo! When i see my opening hand at a tournament and my only pokemon is a mewtwo i do not like that hand because it will be killed by a mewtwo. Anyways most games played are either mewtwo wars or games where everyone runs 2 but NO ONE plays a single one down! Then there is the whole resistance thing on darkrai that makes it even worse. So i was wondering what if no one played mewtwo? Would mewtwo even be good anymore since it gets two shoted by everything and cant do exceptionally good damage unless you waste all of your energies on it. But anyways this is just my thought. What i really want to here is yours. Discuss!!!
Going into nationals, a lot of players seemed to forget what made Mewtwo EX so good in the first place, and so they dropped their Mewtwo count. In my opinion, Darkrai EX was the cause of this, because it is significantly more difficult for Mewtwo to sweep its board. However, Mewtwo is still
most effective against decks without Mewtwo. The other big advantage to Mewtwo decks is that Mewtwo still makes a great backup attacker. If you're playing a matchup that is really bad, you could always engage the opponent in a Mewtwo war and hope for the best (and if they didn't have Mewtwo in the first place then that was even better for you.)
In other words, Mewtwo is played because it effectively counters everything (including itself.) At the moment, it has no real counter (aside from itself). This means that since if you are playing any deck, Mewtwo will counter you. If a card counters you in this way, and you do not have a response, you will lose. So you need a counter for their counter. Since Mewtwo counters everything, your only option is to play your own Mewtwo. Hence you play Mewtwo in your deck. If it sounds like I'm saying that Mewtwo is only good for the Mewtwo war, and therefore repeating you, then you missed something key. Mewtwo is used to counter not only Mewtwo, but also almost every other card.
In the next format, I don't think that Mewtwo will see play in the same way that it did in the HS-on format. This is because we lose the incredible draw power that we had in the HS-on format. This is because it will be more difficult (if not altogether impossible) to run Mewtwo in everything. I actually believe that this will make decks built around Mewtwo more powerful than they were before!
