Andrés already had made plans for that week. He didn't expect to win. Oscar V. usually manages to just nudge him out of first place. In fact he says he only played for the heck of it. The trip is not transferable.

The trip is not transferable. But I thought that as long as the winning player at nationals declares that they cannot use the trip at the time it is awarded that it did pass down to the next place at nationals. I believe that this is the case because a long time ago when I was in the finals with a trip on the line I made absolutely certain before playing that if I did win, the trip would pass down. I could not go and did not want the opportunity taken away from another UK player. Had this not been the case I would have conceded the final immediately.

I don't know about that! Is it too late for it to pass down? The thing is, I think number 2 also wasn't planning to go due to work. Number 3 asked the representative from our distributor who was onsite during our nationals if it was possible that the trip could be passed down but he said it wasn't. Who would we ask to find out if you are right?

Dave Schwimmer, best to ask the boss :)

What I posted was correct five years ago. It may be too late to arrange for the pass down. I suspect that prizes are determined on the day in part to avoid winners selling the trip after the event is over. In my case I made it clear that I could not use the trip before the final began. It could be that that was what made my case special. My opponent did not know this was the case at the time, but the organisers did.

We had a similar scenario last year in seniors in MY.... the trip was passed down to the 3rd place in nationals when the 1st and 2nd place person couldnt afford to go

i dont know about this year though ......... good luck guys

We had a similar situation 2 times in France. Nikola V, the SR champion, can't go to US because of travel arrangement problems (he's bulgarian).
This happened last year, and happened again this year. Both times, the trip was passed down, but it was clear before the beggining of the game.

I really think a country should send in a representative to play at Worlds.
So if any winner can't go it should trickle down.

Even with a (first place) trip and few nights hotel it can be to expensive/impossible to go to Worlds, so why not let the next in line use it.
I really don't see why this should not be allowed.
