Yu-Gi-Oh! help?

My poor aching brain can take no more. I've finally cracked, and admitted I need help sorting all this out.

I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh, I don't buy the merchandise; I really don't like the concept all that much. But I do enjoy the show. It's on at 3pm and I watch it whenever my lunch hour happens to coincide. I only see about a third of the episodes, and I've hopelessly lost the plot.

To give you an idea of where I am, today's episode involved Yami Marik dueling Bakura and Marik's spirit, or something. They were on the top of Kaiba's blimp, in the Shadow Realm, and Yami Marik won, banishing the other two. I believe it's a bit behind, but that's the channel I'm watching it on, so please don't spoil anything that happens later. I've a bunch of questions:

The Yamis. It seems that there are three - Yami Yugi, Yami Marik and Yami Bakura. Is that right? So, two bad spirits and one good spirit in the Millennium Collection Thing? Who are they? For that matter, what are all the Millennium Items?

Seto Kaiba. What's his motivation in all this? I can't see how his corporation ties into it all - or, for that matter, what exactly KaibaCorp does. Is he just obsessed with having the best cards and crushing everyone else? Does Duel Monsters even HAVE a sportsmanship award?

Duelist's Kingdom. How did the Pegasus tournament end? I tried to watch every episode when it first came out waaay back, but got bored after that first Yugi-Weevil match. I only picked up again right at the beginning of Kaiba's city tourney, so I basically missed the entire thing. Seems like all the characters got what they wanted - Joey's money, Yugi's creepy granpa and Seto's brother. I believe Yugi and Kaiba teamed up to rescue Mokuba? Why was that?

Bakura. Who is this guy? He wasn't at the Pegasus tourney. I know he's a "friend" of Our Heroes, and was brought to hospital by Yugi's creepy granpa. What happened there? How did he get his Millennium object? In a flashback, Tristan said he threw it into the jungle on Duelist's Kingdom.

Yugi. Why is Yami Yugi dominant now? Yugi used to have to summon him for duels. I'll admit I like not having to look at those creepy eyes Yugi inherited from his creepy granpa, but his hair was relatively more sensible.

Bad Yamis. Fill me in on why Yami Bakura and Marik were fighting Yami Marik today? I know that they had secretly teamed up back in the city. Also, I only switched over right as Bakura's Winged Dragon of Ra vanished into the graveyard for some reason. What exactly does that card do - I've seen Slifer and Obelisk already - , and how come Bakura had it and not Marik?

The Finals - How did each match go? I've only seen glimpses of this stage, and I've no idea who's supposed to be fighting who and at what knockout stage.

Many, many questions. I better hold a few off for my next post, but if anyone can help me out, cheers!

By the way, I DID see the episode where Marik's past was explained, and how Pegasus got the Egyptian God cards. I also saw that one where Bakura possessed a piece of Yugi's puzzle.

Duelist Kindom: Yugi one by crushing Pegasus with his Magician of Black Choas.

Bakura: Tristan did trough it into the woods at duelist kingdom, but apparently Yami Bakura and Bakura are separate people, they share different pains, everything. But Yami Bakura's spirit lives in Bakura, so if Bakura goes he goes to. But Yami Bakura is also usually in control and can teleport the Millenium Ring right back to his neck.

Bad Yamis: This is a long story, I might as well tell you most of the episode.

Well before the finals started Marik somehow got his ecsence in Tea. Tea took the Millenium ring and transfered Marik's esence it to Yami Bakura. They both found Yami Marik and challenged him to a Shadow Game. Later, Bakura played a magic card that took the Winged Dragon of Ra out of Marik's deck and put it in his hand. He the revived 3 monsters and tributed them to summon the Winged Dragon. But the Marik activated a magic card that drained the atk points of cards tributed and added them to his life points. The Winged Dragon takes on the Atk & Def of the cards tributed and since they had 0 atk strenght the Winged Dragon had 0 atk strength, so he tributed that and another monster on the field and summoned Dark Ruler Ha Des....................

I can explain some of this since I've been watching this show a little (how strange me  )

The Yamis
Yes, you are correct that there are 3 at the moment. 2 of them (Marik and Bakura) are after the Mellenium Items, especially Yugi's Mellenium Puzzle.
Kaiba
Seto and his brother, Mokuba, are basically the guys who created/manage all the card tournaments. KaibaCorp used to be a weapons factory, but since Kaiba's stepfather died, Kaiba changed it to kind of promote peace. Kaiba is also part of the Mellenium Item story because of his obsession with the Blue-Eyes White Dragon (Since he owns all 3 copies that were ever created). His role is shown in the future as his descendant was the Keeper of the Blue-Eyes White Dragons
Bakura
No clue how he got the Mellenium Ring back, but he did infuse one of the pieces of the Mellenium Puzzle so that the Yami Bakura spirit lives on.
Yami Yugi
Yami Yugi tends to be the dominant one out of the 2 souls because the story is getting deeper into the Mellenium Items concept because characters who have Mellenium Items or are associated with people with Mellenium Items have a place back in Ancient Egypt. As of now, the show is starting to become the Battle of the Mellenium Items as the spirits of the past (The Pharoh, the Tomb Keeper, and the Theif) duke it out.

The Finals: the 1st match was yugi vs. bakura-yugi won. The 2nd match was Odion(poseing as Marik) vs. Joey-Joey won. The 3rd match was Yami Marik vs. Mai-Yami Marik won. The 4th match was Kaiba vs. Ishizu-kaiba won. But they haven't compelted tournament.

Yami Yugi was a Pharaoh from long time ago that stopped the ancient game of Duel Monsters. Back then the monsters were actually real, but wizards and sorcerers sealed the monsters in ancient stone. The game was getting real destructive so The Pharaoh sealed the game away never to be played again and the power of the game is supposed to be sealed away within the Millenium Items.
Not known about Yami Bakura. Some web sites say that he's the spirit of an ancient graverobber. Yami Bakura's main objective is to obtain all 7 Millenium Items.
Yami Marik is a spirit of evil that was born when Marik as a kid took the Tomb-Keeper's Initiation against his own will. The spirit grew out of Marik's hate against the Pharaoh (not known at the time that it was reborn in Yugi when he solved the Millenium Puzzle). Odion somehow kept the evil spirit in check but when Odion was knocked out, the spirit took control and sent Marik to the Shadow Realm.
Seto Kaiba is a big Duel Monsters fan. In fact he's the best. The anime shows you that because he's such a big fan he created the holographic technology.
But in the manga it shows that when Seto stole Grandpa's Blue Eyes for the first time (yes first time because Yugi was so gullible to let him see it so Seto did a ole switcheroo switching the Blue Eyes with a fake) Yami Yugi entered the pictured and did a Shadow Game on Seto using Yami's Shadow Powers to bring the monsters back to life. After losing and forced to do a Penalty Game (Yami's way of dealing punishment to the loser). Seto had nightmares about it and created the technology as a way of getting back at Yugi to combat his own Shadow Powers. Right now in the Maga (out in the U.S.) Yugi, Joey, Tea, and Tristan are forced to play in Kaiba's Death Amusement Park "DEATH-T" and if they get out alive Yugi can get a re-match with Kaiba.
But the bottom line is that Kaiba cares to be the best. The only person he thinks is a worthy opponent is Yugi and everybody else. =p. No I don't think Duel Monster have a Sportsmanship award.
Yugi won the last match versus Pegasus. Here's what happened to it all. Yugi was challeneged by Pegasus and was invited to enter Duelist Kingdom. Yugi refused thus Pegaus used his Millenium Eye to kidnap his Grandpa's soul and Yugi had to enter the tournament to get it back.
Joey entered because he got a letter from his sister saying she was going blind, and the big prize was 3 million dollars. But Joey wasn't invited to enter. So Yugi gave him a Star Chip (exploiting a loop hole saying that if you have at least ONE Star CHip, you can enter) and he entered. Joey lost to the semi-finals to Yugi, but Yugi still gave him the 3 million dollar prize to him.
Mokuba was on the island because the heads of Kaiba Corp (later to be named "The Big 5") wanted to take it over. And corporate bylaws said they needed a Kaiba to take it over, and Pegasus made a deal w/The Big 5 to take it over if Yugi had to be defeated as well. Kaiba only helped Yugi out in his duel against "Evil Kaiba" (or call him "Monster") so he can save his company. At that time he had no idea that Mokuba was at Duelist Kingdom.

He was at Duelist Kingdom. Yami Bakura tried to win the Millenium Puzzle through a Shadow Game. But Yani Yugi sent him to the Shadow Realm instead. We thought we had seen the last of him when Tristan knocked him out and threw the Ring in the jungle. But somehow Yami Bakura came back and ambushed Pegasus after his duel w/Yugi by challenging him to a Shadow Game. Winning the Shadow Game Yami Bakura took Pegasus' Millenium Eye. Yami Bakura made a deal with Marik. If Bakura can help Marik obtain all 3 God Cards, Marik will give him not only the Millenium Rod but the locations of all 7 Millenium Items. So Marik and Bakura made this plan of normal Bakura ambushed by Rare Hunters. It's all a set up.

Yami Marik banished normal Marik to the Shadow Realm. But Marik left a fragment of his consciousness inside Tea. So Marik used Tea to deliver the Millenium Ring (which he kidnapped after his duel w/Yami Yugi) to bring back Yami Bakura. They struck a deal. If Yami Bakura can defeat Yami Marik, normal Marik will give him (an updated deal) of the knowledge of "The Pharaoh's Secret" (which is tattoed on Marik 's back) and the Millenium Rod. Yami Bakura got RA through the cards Dark Designator (forcing Marik to get RA in his hand) and Exchange (taking it out of Marik's hand). I think Bakura tributed RA because Marik activated a Trap Card that stole all the ATK power of the 3 monsters had and put it into his Life Points making RA an ATK power of ZERO! One of Ra's effect is that it gains the ATK and DEF of the 3 tributed monsters. Ra can be controlled if someone chants an ancient phrase that's on the card. Ra also has an ability called "Instant Attack" that can attack on the same turned that it was summoned and can take LP that the player has and put it into RA's attack (Example: RA has ATK 0f 5000, I have 8000 LP. I put 7999 LP into RA making it's ATK of 12999).

The Battle City Finals didn't happen yet thanks to Noah and The Big 5. But for the Semi-Finals. I can tell you.
Yami Yugi beat Yami Bakura when he unleased Slifer on him.
Joey beat Odion (disguising himself as Marik) when Odion used a fake Winged Dragon of RA card and the real RA card did not like that phony and struck out trying to take out Joey AND Odion. Joey got up first before Odion. Also in this duel is when Yami Marik came out.
Yami Marik beat Mai with The Winged Dragon of RA. Marik also made it a Shadow Game and sent Mai to the Shadow Realm as well.
Kaiba beat Ishizu Ishtar when he was about to let Obelisk loose on her when he had a vision telling him to play Blue Eyes (thanks to the Millenium Rod). SO he Reborned a Gadget Soldier, and Tributed Obelisk and Gadget Soldier for Blue Eyes and Kaiba let Blue Eyes take out Ishizu.

Yamis:
Actually, only the spirit inside Yugi's millenium item is called Yami. That is the spirit's name. Marik's spirit was born out of his hate for the Tomb Keeper clan and of protecting the ancient spirit of the Pharoh (also known as Yami). Bakura's spirit is "a thief and a scoundrel" and plays a disruption-type deck in which the purpose is to discard all of his opponent's cards. Yami sent this spirit to the Graveyard of the Shadow Realm first, and somehow it came back. Tristen then threw Bakura's Milennium Ring into the middle of the forest, but it somehow materialized on Bakura later. Marik's spirit banished Bakura's spirit to the shadow realm, but Bakura's spirit transferred a portion of itself into a piece of Yugi's Millenium Puzzle.

Seto Kaiba:
Completely obsessed with being the best at everything that he does. In order to gain his and Mokuba's freedom from an orphanage, he challanged a Chess Grandmaster to a match in which, if the grandmaster lost, then he would have to take both Seto and Mokuba as his children. Later, Seto overthrew the grandmaster's business (which was in war) and rebuilt a gaming empire based around the development and distribution of Duel Monsters and the different types of holographic devices used to play it. He is completely loyal to his younger brother Mokuba, and Mokuba returns the sentiment and more. Seto exploits this by setting Mokuba to be his general technology guy, decripter, and general gofer.

Duelist's Kingdom:
After losing to Pegasus and having his grandfather's mind trapped in a Duel Monsters card, Yugi went to Duelist Kingdom to try and get back his grandfather's soul. Before he left, Joey made a big scene about getting onto the boat without any star chips, so Yugi gave Joey one of HIS star chips, and, through a rulings loophole, Joey was allowed on the boat. Tristen and Tea snuck on. During Duelist Kingdom, Joey won his Red Eyes Black Dragon from Rex Raptor after using his Time Wizard to blast Red Eyes away. Both Yugi and Joey made it to the castle and the finals. Seto was left as dead after some of Pegasus's henchmen tried to kill him and he jumped out a 100 story window. Later, Seto came to Duelist Kingdom to free Mokuba, who was being held for legal purposes of selling Kaibacorp to Pegasus. Pegasus trapped Mokuba's soul inside another Duel Monsters card, and Seto was forced to beat Yugi in order to duel Pegasus. Seto lost after Pegasus cheated using his milennium eye to see all of Seto's cards. Yugi eventually won the finals, freeing the sould of Seto, Mokuba, and Yugi's grandfather. In addition, Yugi won the $3 Million grand prize, which he gave to Joey so that Joey's sister could have an eye operation.

Bakura:
I'm not really sure about him. His human form is a good person, and a really good friend to Yugi and his bunch. However, his spirit form is not exactly evil, but about as cutthroat as you can get in order to get what he wants.

Yugi:
Yami is more dominant because Yami is the better duelist, and is also able to protect Yugi from the harmful effects of dueling in the Shadow Realm. Yami acts as a sort of Zen master (not unlike Phil Jackson) and helps to calm down Yugi and focus his mind on the task at hand.

Bad Yamis:
Again, they are NOT Yamis. They are spirits. Bakura had a portion of the human Marik's spirit dueling with him, and was promised the information about the Pharoh (Yami), the Egyptian God Cards, and the power that all three posess. Marik's spirit form is a more evil version of Marik that was blocked by the calming presence of Odion (the bald guy with the ponytail down to his waist). After Odion summoned a fake Winged Dragon of Ra card, the real Ra took offense, and struck down both Odion and Joey. Odion still has not recovered from this blow.

The Finals:
I'll go through both seasons. First, Duelist Kingdom. Yugi faced off against Mai (girl in the purple outfit). Yugi was still afraid of allowing Yami to duel, as Yami had almost killed Seto Kaiba in their last duel. Eventually, Yugi won after summoning a ritual monster (I forget his name) and beating Mai's team of Harpies and their Pet Dragon. Joey faced Bandit Keith, a ruthless aggressive duelist who uses machine-type monsters, apparantly resistant to much and weak to little. Joey won after combining his Red Eyes with some magic card to create Red Eyes Metal Dragon, which defeated Keith with ease. The next duel was Yugi against Joey. Joey had the upper hand at the beginning, starting out by combining his Red Eyes with Yugi's Summoned Skull to form Black Skull Dragon, an extremely powerful monster. Yugi eventually beat Joey with a combination of his Dark Magician and Joey's Time Wizard. The next duel was Yugi vs Pegasus, which was a big 5-part episode. In the first 2, Pegasus cheated using his Millenium Eye to see all of Yugi's cards. Yugi eventually countered by inventing the "Mind Shuffle" tactic, where Yugi and Yami would switch minds whenever Pegasus would try to read them. Yugi would play Magic and Trap cards that he drew, Yami played the Monsters. The advantage to this tactic is that Yami and Yugi had no idea as to what either was doing, and neither did Pegasus. After episode 3, Pegasus sent the game into the shadow realm, where Yugi was too weak to stay out and duel for long. Yami took over, and Pegasus started his cheating ways again. Yugi eventually won because Tea, Tristen, and Joey combined their spirit strengths to block Pegasus's evil eye. Yugi won using his Magician of Black Chaos to defeat Pegasus's Thousand Eyes Restrict.
In Battle City, only the first round of the finals has happened. Yugi defeated Bakura's spirit using his Egyptian God card Slypher the Sky Dragon. Bakura's spirit used several underhanded tricks, like switching with the real Bakura, who was injured due to the Rare Hunters. Joey then faced Odion, and won when Marik's Winged Dragon of Ra knocked out Odion, and Marik's spirit was released. Marik's spirit then went up against Mai, who never really had a chance. Marik won using the Winged Dragon of Ra, and sent Mai's mind to the Shadow Realm. Seto then defeated Ishizu, Marik's sister, using his Blue Eyes White Dragon. Right now, Seto, Mokuba, Yugi, Tea, Joey, Tristen, Duke Devlin (faced Yugi in Dungeon Dice Monsters between Duelist Kingdom and Battle City), and Joey's sister are facing off against the Big 5 of Kaibacorp for control over their bodies. After this season is done, the Battle City Finals will finish.

Spoilers For Battle City:

Yugi fights Kaiba and eventually wins, but not before both of them get out their respective God Cards (it turns out that Osiris doesn't like fighting Obelisk). Yami Malik fights Jounouchi in a Game of Darkness, and Jounouchi was extremely close to winning, but Yami Malik prevailed. Yami Yugi, like anybody could see coming, beats Yami Malik in the finals and we all go home happy... at least until the Sacred Dragons plot arc and whathaveyou. It gets fun later on in YGO.

Also, you could say that Zok (or whatever his name is) is a yami, but in any case he's apparantly only in the manga. I'd say more about him, but... I've only heard a few things about him.

That's great, thanks guys! It clears a lot. Including my other questions; I can't remember them. I'm sure they'll come back to me on Monday, when Yu-Gi-Oh is back on the box.

Okay, lets see what I can do...(pulls out huge notebook filled with notes)

The Yamis. It seems that there are three - Yami Yugi, Yami Marik and Yami Bakura. Is that right? So, two bad spirits and one good spirit in the Millennium Collection Thing? Who are they? For that matter, what are all the Millennium Items?

My answer:Okay, part 1.): you are partially right. There are 3 yamis, but only one is actually named yami. he is the spirit of a Pharaoh who fought in a war 5,000 years ago, and now has to prevent that from happening again. As far as the other two yamis are concerned, to distinguish yami from hikari, they have "affectionately" dubbed Yami Bakura as Bakura (leaving his hikari as Ryou), and Yami Marik as Marik( leaving his hikari as Malik). Now, part 2): There are 7 Millenium items, which include: Puzzle, Ring, Rod, Eye, Scales, Key, and Necklace. The Puzzle belongs to Yugi( Captain Obvious right here, folks) , the Ring Ryou, the Rod Malik, The Eye used to belong to Pegasus, the Necklace Ishizu(the girl with dark brown hair and Egyptian clothing), and both the Scales and Key belong to Shadi( some guy who wears a turban).

Seto Kaiba. What's his motivation in all this? I can't see how his corporation ties into it all - or, for that matter, what exactly KaibaCorp does. Is he just obsessed with having the best cards and crushing everyone else? Does Duel Monsters even HAVE a sportsmanship award?

My answer:Ishizu told Kaiba to start his own Duel monsters tournament because it would lure her brother malik and his rare Hunters( men in black cloaks, most of the time) into entering and stealing the rarest cards. She also gave him the Egyptian god card Obelisk to also try and lure him in to get the remaining two. But now Seto wants all three cards for an ultimate powerhouse that would give him ultimate revenge against Yugi. At least that's what I'm seeing in all this...

My answer:The Pegasus tourney finals went as follows: First Yugi vs. Mai, then Joey vs. Bandit Keith( kinda looks like a street biker). Yugi won against Mai, and Joey beat Bandit Keith( even though Keith cheated), which meant that they had to duel each other to see who was going to face Pegasus. Yugi won that duel as well, but gave the 3-million dollars to Joey anyway. The final match between Pegasus and Yugi was carried out over the course of five or so episodes. The first two involved the opening of the duel, in which Yugi is having trouble with Pegasus' Eye( reads his minds and lets Peggy counter every play) On the third episode, Yugi devises a plan with Yami to confuse Pegasus, which involves doing a technique called " Mind Shuffle", where the two souls "pass the baton" between turns. This frustrates Pegasus so much that he sends him to a Shadow game, which Yugi is also having trouble with. Dtermined to win, he keeps dueling, despite Yami's advice of letting him take over. Weak and exausted, Yugi passes out, leaving Yami to contend with Peggy( let's just call him that for now, alright? Saves space), which means his mind is open again. Unfortunately for Peggy, Yugi's friends are there to back him up, meaning he can't see the cards in his hand. Needless to say, Yami wins the duel, and Peggy frees his Grandpa, Seto and Mokuba( thier minds were captured by Pegs himself). As far as the duel with Seto and Yugi working together, Yugi was only fighting because Marik caught his friends, and Mokuba was also caught. the two just happened to be in the same spot and BOOM. They're stuck.

My answer:Bakura is supposedly their friend, but ends up going berserk when the spirit of the Ring takes over. The reason Bakura was brough to the hospital was when Marik made a deel with the spirit, he swore on it by slashing his arm with a knife, then licked the blood on the knife( something in the Japanese version that 4Kids took out).

Yugi. Why is Yami Yugi dominant now? Yugi used to have to summon him for duels. I'll admit I like not having to look at those creepy eyes Yugi inherited from his creepy granpa, but his hair was relatively more sensible.

My answer:Yami Yugi is dominant now because ishizu told him it was his destiny to save the world from a great evil. Every now and then Yugi does make an appearence, but it is mostly Yami who is seen in each episode. But I do agree with you on the eye thing: those do creep me out too. Although I like the switch-off for other reasons. :)

My answer:Marik and Yami Bakura were fighting Yami Marik because Marik demanded his body back and promised Yami Bakura the Millenium Rod if he acomplished this. Bakura had TWDOR(abb.) because of a magic card that enabled him to take it from Yami Marik. He soon lost it though, and ended up losing the duel.

The Finals - How did each match go? I've only seen glimpses of this stage, and I've no idea who's supposed to be fighting who and at what knockout stage.

My answer:They've only shown Yugi vs. Bakura, Joey vs. Marik(Odion), Mai vs. The real Marik, and Seto vs. Ishizu. Now they've gone into some crazy " Into the Shadow realm" thing, so i don't think they'll show the rest of Battle City for a while.

Hope that helps. If you haven't already guessed, my answer are next to the things that say " My answers"

Well, that pre-emptively answers one of my next questions. Cheers! After all that, I now know more than I have any right to know.

Incidently, the T.V. channel I'm watching seems to have screwed things up. Today's episode didn't continue the story; instead, they aired the old one where Yugi, Mai and Joey finally enter Pegasus' castle just in time to watch him square off against Kaiba. I haven't seen these ones either, so I guess it's not all bad...

... and, after reading bullados' post again, I see the answer to my other question is Duke Devlin (I'll take "Unknown Yu-Gi-Oh characters for 100, please"). Dunno how I missed that the first time 'round.

I think that answers everything. Thanks again, everyone!

I missed quite a few episodes in the noah's saga. The last time I watched it, it was Tea dueling against a penguin. What was happening there?

Who's Jounouchi? Was he sent to the shadow realm after he lost? Did Mai come back from the shadow realm?

Jounouchi: The Japanese name for Joey. Mai is still stuck in the Shadow Realm. After Tea's duel, Tristan, Serenity, and Duke all dueled one of the big five at once. Tristan lost the duel and his body is taken over by one of the big five, while Tea and Duke won. I missed this mornings episodes but it started the duel between Kaiba and one of the Big Five.

Hope I helped.

Oh no, is Tristan gone forever? How did Tea beat that penguin? With her dark magician girl?

Tristan does come back to duel Our Heroes as the entire Big 5.

About Duke. Trusdale, Yugi's grandfather, got into a big fight with him b/c he opened an enormous card shop just down the road from his little card shop. Joey got T-d off with Duke and challanged him to a duel. Duke accepted, but on the condition that it would be a Draft (if you play Poke, you know what I mean). Joey lost, and became Duke's servant for a week. Yugi stepped in and challanged Duke to a game. If Yugi won, Joey would be set free. If Duke won, Yugi would be stripped of his Duelist Kingdom championship. Duke made it a game of Dungeon Dice Monsters, instead of Duel Monsters. In 2 particularly well-made episodes, Yugi beat Duke at his own game. Later, during Kaiba's tournament, Duke falls for Serenity, Joey's sister, along with Tristan. Both play games of oneupsmanship until Tristan is ultimately defeated by one of the Big 5. I don't know what happens after that.

You forgot one(or maybe you just missed those episodes??). After Tea's duel, but before the duel with Tristan, Serenity, and Duke, is Joey's duel against one of the big 5(in the form of Judge Man).

Just a question. I thought there were originally 4 BlueEyesWhiteDragon cards, but one of them got ripped in half.

Is that right? or was I misinformed?

if that's right, what happened there?
