I earn a living through sales. This year's economic downturn, and increased travel costs, have decreased my income this year. We had to bail on Nats this year, and are leaving all of our hopes for a Worlds invite on a solid Grinder performance by my son. I have confidence in his deck and ability this year, but our fingers are crossed.
We do have league friends from Santa Clara, CA (Team Invasion FTW) at this year's Nats, so I have been following these threads, and will continue to do so, for word of what is happening this year.
I told my son of the likelihood that a number of players, some having booked flights and/or hotel rooms, will not be able to play in this year's Nats because of space limitations. He felt as bad as I do. In fairness to POP/PUI, the following info has been on the go-pokemon site forever:
"Registration will be limited to the first 256 Junior Division players, 256 Senior Division players, and 512 Masters Division players. You MUST register for an event ticket in your division through the Origins Game Fair website or on site at Origins to be eligible to play. Players without an event ticket will not be admitted into the event. Origins online event registration will open in late April or early May. POP will post a notice at
www.go-pokemon.com/op when we are notified that Origins online registration has opened. "
Now, based on last year's numbers, some may have felt comfortable waiting to register on site, but registering (for free) for the event, when paying for an Origins Badge, was always possible.
I imagine that based on the pre-announced limits, MA will have a T-32 after 9 rounds. It will be the toughest Pokemon tournament anywhere of the year. There will be people turned away, people who go 7-2 may not make it in (only 6.24% of competitors will top cut), and the howls of outrage and sour grapes will be heard here long after the event is over.
I profoundly hope exactly 512 MA, 256 SR and 256 JR players show up on time to play and everyone is seated, I hope no one donks and every game is played out to a six prize card win within 30 minutes. I hope that everyone who does not make top cut with the same record as some who do make top cut feel that those that did make top cut deserved to make it. Okay, maybe I hoped one too many times.
I would like to see next year's Nationals split off from Origins. It is ridiculous that Pokemon players should have to pay $60-$75 to play in a free tournament. I would like to see next year's Nationals be unlimited in number of players who can participate. I would like to see a top cut that allows closer to 25% vs 6.24% or less of participants be able to play in match rounds. I would like to see enough rounds played that allow all x-2 players to make top cut. If making the US its' own continent so that Mexico and Canada are not hurt by more rounds and a bigger cut, then I hope for that too.
Okay, with hopes and wishes noted, I both hope and wish that you all have a great time this year at the US Nats.
