Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Platinum Prereleases in Virginia!!

The Theme deckers were a blast. Defintely a lot of fun.
For those wondering, I got the Shaymin lvX

Props: Charlotte for letting me take lots of pictures with her camera.
Slops: I would slop Javier for leaving me, Ben T, and Fatrock to put away all the tables and chairs, but I'll call it even for him providing the energy cards at the mutant draft

ATTN SOVA JUDGES:
Honchkrow-G's Honcho's Command attack reads "Search your deck for up to 2 in any combination of Stadium cards or Trainer cards that has Team Galactic's Invention in its name, show them to your opponent, and put them into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward."
When looking at this card, we ruled that the "has Team Galactic's Invention in its name" is only connected to "Trainer cards" and NOT "Stadium cards" so we allowed it to search for any Stadium cards.

Crobat: we should find out when Spring Vacation is for peoples and see who wants to meet for a mutant draft (I'll put a note on my case of cards to remember the energy cards :thumb:).

totoro: It occurred to me in the Theme Deck challenge that this tournament may be a good time to remind the junior division and new players about the rule of offering the opponent to cut and that they have the option and right to cut the opponent's deck after its shuffle.

Relatively light attendances for weekend one, so I'll post a few tidbits:

a set of Japanese Giratina sleeves (the red ones) were given away as a door prize at each event. That will continue this weekend at both events (and both Fairfax flights)

you never know when draft fever will hit Fairfax. (I may judge so a certain drafting fanatic can play)

this set is HUGE! I cracked a box and still have several cards that I didn't get one of... But, lots of trainers with possibilities, some great "nostalgia" cards for us old timers, and a truly evil set of Lvl X cards. Hope you guys can make it Sat or Sun!!!

Yes, like Dialga G Lv.X. The most evil card in the entire format. Sooooooo many decks are ruined by that ONE card.

Too bad the nostalgia cards suck :/

For a moment, I thought about putting together a haymaker-like deck. I remember my first gym leader had banned the deck. But then after thinking about it, I realized that it wouldn't work because Hitmonchan, Electabuzz, Scyther, Ditto, all were top cards during a time when all pokemon had double weakness AND lower average HP, their energy cost vs attack damage was higher than normal, and decks were slower. Now, the average HP of a basic is 60HP with +10 weakness (and many exceed 80HP), and the attack damage / effect that they do has become normal for the energy costs. Decks back at that time were also slower. Thought your game was slow when your Cosmic Power got shut down? Games back when Haymaker was still a decent deck were slower than that. In fact, you don't know what slow is until you play with baby pokemon without Double Gusts :/

Just called Hobby Works. The current numbers are
Flight 1: 38 + 3 waitlist; 5 TDC
Flight 2: 22; 0 TDC

you never know when draft fever will hit Fairfax. (I may judge so a certain drafting fanatic can play)
Keeping in mind that another group is coming in after Pokemon to set up for an event. Also keeping in mind HW closes at 7pm now. (<-- EDIT: corrected closing time)

Yeah, but we can chase off that "other" event! Or else......

FOOD COURT DRAFT!!!!

Hobby Works JUST filled up...

We grabbed the LAST 3 spots from FLIGHT 2!

Waiting list just started .. so get on it!

I do need to say that every event we've run has several folks who have preregistered pull the old "no-show". My point: if you haven't prereg'd yet, do NOT be discouraged!
1. Call the store and get on a waitlist

2. Be on time for your flight

3. I will do everything possible to get you in, but I can't promise you a spot if there is absolutely no space (but, Juniors LOVE playing on the floor out in the mall, right??)

I JUST CALLED THE STORE, STORE SAYS THERE IS STILL ROOM IN FLIGHT 2

The numbers they game me were
Flight 1: full with about 8 on the waitlist; 5 for TDC
Flight 2: 30; 1 for TDC

As totoro said, if both flights do fill up, you definitely want to get onto the waitlist. You have a good chance--but not guarenteed--of getting into either flight if on the waitlist because of "no-shows." This is especially true for flight 2 because it currently does not yet have a waitlist started.

Also, upon registration, people may switch from the main event to TDC, which then opens up a slot in the main event, especially since there's not a lot of TDCers currently registered. 12 slots are reserved for TDCers during preregistration. However, if those spots do not fill up, then they become main event spots if that is where they are needed. That's another reason why you want to get onto the waitlist if possible.

So, if main event + TDC < 50, then there is still physical room in the flight  .

I don't know why whoever said it was full said so. The guy I talked to was able to tell me the number from memory when he registered two people earlier in the day. Rogue Archetype, the store did confirm that you were signed up for flight 2 but said that there was only 30 people signed up, which means there is more space. Although I think the guy I spoke with was one of the weekday-morningers, he sounded like he knew his way around the prereg list. I was going to go by the store later today, so I can confirm the numbers physically written down at that time.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

This is an EDIT if the two posts get merged.

I just got back from Hobby Works. The store manager said that practically 20 people called today.

Flight 1's main event and waitlist are filled. It does have 7 spaces left in its TDC.
Flight 2's main event has 2 spaces open and its waitlist is still empty. It has 1 person signed up for its TDC.

If the TDC does not fill up, those spaces will be changed to accomidate main event players.

As long as there are time and space (whoa, who let Palkia and Dialga in here?) we will draft.

They tell me that the waitlists for both main event flights are full. I think most of my leaguers who want to go are already on the list, but there were still some trying to squeeze in.

If you're not on the list and really don't want to play in the TDC, the only thing you can do now is to be a walk-in. If you bring a chair, this may increase your odds of getting into the event. I'll see what I can do about increasing the capacity of each flight by 5 or 10 players. With that bump, a combination of "no-shows" + unfilled spaces in the TDC ought to balance the remaining players who couldn't get onto the preregistration list (bringing capacity to 55-60 players per flight).

Another they tell me that a place in Oregon had 108 players. Anyone feel like giving them a run for their money?

Hey, we always beat Oregon in discussion thread size, so I think we can let em beat us in tourny size. We all know which is more important. ;) Goodnight everyone, see whoever is going to Flight 1 tomorrow soon. :thumb:

Everyone I talk to is in Flight 1 ... so .. are any of you MASTERS in Flight 2 ??
(or will i play my wife for 4 or 5 rounds and go home .. LOL!!! )

UNRELATED QUESTION :

My wife and I never got our POP packs for last season. My daughter got like 10 packs though.
Do grown folks get the packs for participation in tourneys/league/prereleases ?
(sure would like the Roseanne's)

i just called over and they said it was full and te waiting list was full.... darn!
