i agree that all unclaimed invites will go to the grinder, but there do not have to be 128 people in each age group. worlds 06 had 146 competitors in 15+.
I guarantee you that the invites not claimed will be given to the grinder. The tournament has to have 128 in each age group so they can have the right number of rounds and top cut. If 20 people in masters don't show up, they aren't going to just run the tournament with 108 masters playing.
I'm going to guess and say that 30-40% of the international players that get an un-paid invite will not attend Worlds. I might be on the low end too, but I'm just guessing. Those invites go into the grinder the the US gets them. Why the US? Because Worlds is in their backyard. So the grinder is going to be filled with US players. So the US gets 30-40% of the international players invites and Worlds ends up being just like it was in 2006, with 50% americans and 50% the rest of the world.
But I am sure there are many US players that prefer it this way. Oh well.

Prime: Many Euro players have said they would attend IF they had an invite w/o trip. As they say in "Field of Dreams"....."If you build it, they will come" (Now, it will be time to put their money where their mouth is  )

Nowhere airline in Australia will go to Florida. To get to Florida, I would have to fly to New York (21 hours minimum and $4000AUD appx.), and then catch a plane to Florida (a stop or two, several upon several hours, and $500USD appx =/= $625AUD appx) That alone would...Well...Put anybody in no state to be playing in a World Championship to be honest. The planes alone is costing pretty much costing upwards of $5,000, that is, of course, after the loads upon loads of taxes you get charged. So assuming that, a rough guesstimate, is $5000. Accommodation...That...Would really depend on the "special offer" that PUI crack with the Hilton Hotels. That is, if they manage to do it this time. But still. That would not be cheap. That would be another few thousand AUD. Then there is everything else that will cost money and ehh...It really is not looking like anyone from Australia would be going (With it costing around $10,000 of our dollars appx.)
You guys should do what I did. Open Google, do a few searches on costs and the like. You see, I can pretty much PROVE that anybody who does not get a Travel Award will not go. (Why spend $10,000 on a couple of days in the U.S. when you could almost buy a brand new car? Or put a deposit on a house?). The amount of money that PUI is spending is phenomenal and they must be blowing a hole in their budget this time.
I opened a few ticket search engines and a ticket melbourne/sidney to orlando show up around AU$2900. and this is included taxes.
You don't have to stay in the Hilton, many many cheap hotels in Orlando.
A brand new car or Worlds? It's a matter of preferences, for one person the car is important for others the experience.
25+ hours in a plane, well how long did you think many Europeans made to get to Worlds 2007?
I agree it's a lot of money, but there are also people willing to save money for it.
And by knowing invites and grinder numbers so early in the season, people can plan a little.
10 months to go for Worlds 2008 which means you need to put XXX dollar aside each month if you really want to go there. Not easy for any Jr or Sr, you absolute need willing parents.
Lia: Many of the Euro MAs would bring their JRs and SRs with them, right?

Try a ticket from Brisbane.
ya, i guess walking shoes for you cost about $3000 +

1800 Euro which is around 2900 AU$ with American Airlines.
I will never fly AA. And that price is a SINGLE trip...The price I quoted was RETURN.
