i agree that all unclaimed invites will go to the grinder, but there do not have to be 128 people in each age group. worlds 06 had 146 competitors in 15+.

As currently planned, our target attendance is 128 per age division, even though there are 144 invites being handed out per division. If 30 Masters players don't verify that they are showing up by the date that we announce (to be announced later), only 10 of those unused invites will be rolled into the LCQ (plus the 4 already guaranteed invites).

If all 140 players in an age division verify that they are showing up by the date announced, that age division will have 144 players in it.

I guarantee you that the invites not claimed will be given to the grinder. The tournament has to have 128 in each age group so they can have the right number of rounds and top cut. If 20 people in masters don't show up, they aren't going to just run the tournament with 108 masters playing.

I'm going to guess and say that 30-40% of the international players that get an un-paid invite will not attend Worlds. I might be on the low end too, but I'm just guessing. Those invites go into the grinder the the US gets them. Why the US? Because Worlds is in their backyard. So the grinder is going to be filled with US players. So the US gets 30-40% of the international players invites and Worlds ends up being just like it was in 2006, with 50% americans and 50% the rest of the world.

But I am sure there are many US players that prefer it this way. Oh well.

Not all unclaimed are going to be given to the grinder, see answer Mike L above.
According the information there are 35 invites coming with a trip the remaining 109??? are without.
I assume it's up to the different LD's to add trips/travel awards for nr2 or even nr 3.
So it will be most of all depending in which country you live and the willingness of a given LD how many invites are going to be used for sure.
I an perfect World this structure would mean that most countries would be able to send 2 competitors in each division and the countries not getting POP travel awards sending 1.
Time will learn.

Nowhere airline in Australia will go to Florida. To get to Florida, I would have to fly to New York (21 hours minimum and $4000AUD appx.), and then catch a plane to Florida (a stop or two, several upon several hours, and $500USD appx =/= $625AUD appx) That alone would...Well...Put anybody in no state to be playing in a World Championship to be honest. The planes alone is costing pretty much costing upwards of $5,000, that is, of course, after the loads upon loads of taxes you get charged. So assuming that, a rough guesstimate, is $5000. Accommodation...That...Would really depend on the "special offer" that PUI crack with the Hilton Hotels. That is, if they manage to do it this time. But still. That would not be cheap. That would be another few thousand AUD. Then there is everything else that will cost money and ehh...It really is not looking like anyone from Australia would be going (With it costing around $10,000 of our dollars appx.)

Looking at that. I guess it is a big WOW that PUI are willing to spend that much money on any one person, let alone 3!

I guess we can all sit and complain about how it is unfair that we do not get enough invites and this and that. But look at the cost...That is phenomenal. I think that spending roughly $30,000 on 3 Australians to participate in Worlds is pretty massive. ($10,000 per head, approximately). And I think they have to be thanked for that.

You guys should do what I did. Open Google, do a few searches on costs and the like. You see, I can pretty much PROVE that anybody who does not get a Travel Award will not go. (Why spend $10,000 on a couple of days in the U.S. when you could almost buy a brand new car? Or put a deposit on a house?). The amount of money that PUI is spending is phenomenal and they must be blowing a hole in their budget this time.

If I got an invite without a travel award. Unfortunately. I would not be able to go. If I had that much money laying around, I would not blow it on something like that, when I could be doing one of my examples above, or putting it towards my student exchange to Germany.

But if I got an invite with a travel award. I would still probably say no to going. I really do not think I would be in any state of mind to be participating in a World Championship after spending around 25 hours in flight and another 10+ hours in Airports. But then again, if I can run around in the bush for days on end then surely with the aid of Red Bull or V or some other random energy drink I will be able to pull through 0_o

Who knows. Worlds is a long way away. I am not going to get all cocky and say that I will be going to Worlds. I mean hey, I might not get invited. But it cannot cause any harm about thinking of these things.

Anywho. 3 invites (1 per age division) is incredible enough. And if this 4 ratings invites per age group for Asia-Pacific includes a travel award, there are going to be ALOT of happy campers down here in the South Pacific. If they aren't. Well...We will all turn emo.

 Anywho. If you actually say through to read this. I wish to thank you a whole heap. And best of luck.

EDIT: Wow. I just read through the 'small font' of the POP website. Turns out the ratings invites do not give travel awards. What a darn shame. I honestly hoped for a bit better...:(

Prime: Many Euro players have said they would attend IF they had an invite w/o trip. As they say in "Field of Dreams"....."If you build it, they will come" (Now, it will be time to put their money where their mouth is  )

Keith

Keith, also many of those players stopped playing because the system used the last years.
For a lot "older" masters it's very good possible to use an invite and I expect a lot of them will be used, for Juniors and Seniors I doubt it.

I opened a few ticket search engines and a ticket melbourne/sidney to orlando show up around AU$2900. and this is included taxes.
You don't have to stay in the Hilton, many many cheap hotels in Orlando.

A brand new car or Worlds? It's a matter of preferences, for one person the car is important for others the experience.
25+ hours in a plane, well how long did you think many Europeans made to get to Worlds 2007?

I agree it's a lot of money, but there are also people willing to save money for it.
And by knowing invites and grinder numbers so early in the season, people can plan a little.
10 months to go for Worlds 2008 which means you need to put XXX dollar aside each month if you really want to go there. Not easy for any Jr or Sr, you absolute need willing parents.

Let's see how much it might cost someone in Washington, USA to make it to Worlds this year. It would cost $330 according to travelocity to fly from Seattle, WA to Orlando, FL. Staying at the Hilton, it cost $528 for 3 nights. So all together, before food and novelty items, the total cost for flying from the further state in north america to orlando florida would cost $858 USD.

To fly from London, England to Orlando, FL, it would cost, according to travelocity, $2,076. Just for the flight.

To fly from Lima, Peru to Orlando, FL, it would cost $701.

To fly from Calgary, Canada, to Orlando, FL, it would cost $471.

To fly from Moscow, Russia to Orlando, FL, it would cost $1,267.

All these figures are from Travelocity.

It seems, if your traveling from a country located in either Canada, North America, or South America, you can get to Florida without dropping $1,000, but if there is a ocean between you and the US, you will end up paying $1,000 if not higher than that to get to Florida.

How many people do you see dropping thousands of dollars to play in one tournament? I don't see many people doing that. And to add on, they pay thousands of dollars BEFORE hotel costs, food costs, and any other costs (transportation for example).

I look forward to seeing what happens this year. Especially since I have a very good chance of being able to attend for the first time in my life (yay!).

edit: Oh, did I add that I plan on driving to Worlds, so I save a good $500 that it would cost me to fly round-trip and only end up having to pay maybe $300-400 for a 3-4 night stay at Worlds. Talk about cheap.

Try a ticket from Brisbane.

There are so many taxes and charges there...

You would almost have to pay for walking in the door. But yes. I checked, a ticket for around Worlds time next year would cost around $4000-$5000. (Return that is, so there and back. And that price is "not including taxes and blah blah blah")

Lia: Many of the Euro MAs would bring their JRs and SRs with them, right?

Prime: You will have a blast at Worlds. You think Nats is fun, oh boy, wait until you get to Worlds. Hope to see ya there, my friend!

Thx Mike for the heads up on the tourney figures. I had a feeling it would be 128 cap/age group, unless more than that "lock in" beforehand. I didnt think all the unused invites would go to the grinder.

Several will, I know one who will bring at least 3 of them.
Each year there were Masters players from our country attending the grinder or the main event (2004)by paying their own trip.

Boy oh boy am I happy. If I go to worlds this year (ya right) it's only a few hour flight. Or a 23 hour drive by car. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

* sigh* I still wish it could have bin in Baltimore. It would have bin a much better location, for ppl.

well, at last my trip to hawaii gave me half ticket in miles program, which means if i dont win nats again i'll only pay $500 bucks (or even less) to go to orlando.

Somebody can help to me to understand, OP pay the ranking premier trip?? But in Argentina we have 2 2 2 invitations and without Pop Sponsor, so we only qualifier at nationals but we don`t have any pay trip?? LMK!
