Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

1st Place Masters U.S National Champion Report

Hey Con this is Chris Abernathy from second round =) I'd just like to say what everyone has already said before.. Congratulations, it was a privilege and an honor to have met and got slaughtered by you =P I knew after our game that your deck had the potential to do very well and it was very possible for it to win.. You can ask anyone the Branders or anyone from Colorado that I was rooting for you all the way man! Soo again congrats on your very deserving win, I wish you the best of luck at Worlds and it was an honor to have met you and hopefully to continue knowing you =)

CON-grats...

You're a great player/sport/and deck builder who's deserved a big win like this

-ian b

-Kevin

Hi Con, congratulations for the win. (Y)
I'm an Italian and I played Sabelock at our Nats and went 4th and I'm so happy the deck won the most skill-intesive tournament of the year. PROPS.

I just want to ask you some questions about some choices you made in your list, because, uhm, it's a very strange list. :D

1. Why did you play Azelf? Was it so important? I don't think there are many 1x key-cards in Sablelock standard lists. Was it so important in your list?

2. Why didn't you play Super Scoop Ups? I think it's very important in my lists, but what about yours?

3. Honchkrow is a very cool tech. How did you found it?

4. Why not Chatot?

I can understand you didn't play Giratina because of the high retreat cost but I was very surprised fort the choices i talked about above even if I think you made most of them thinking about your own game style.

Thanks for the answers!

Congratulations Con! Winning Nats is a huge deal and we know you worked really hard to achieve it!

The Hart Family

^ i hope its a big deal haha. thanks!!

Just a note, if I were called over as a judge where a player placed down a Crobat G and put a damage counter on one of their opponent's Pokemon, then made another move and the opponent removed the damage counter saying that the power wasn't called, I'd rule strongly in favor of the Crobat G player.

The physical placing of the damage counter was a clear indication that the power was invoked.

I have ruled the other way when a player put down a bat together with an energy then declared the power.
But in this case, the power was physically invoked before another action was taken.
At worlds, a player will often indicate the use of a power by gesturing to it and then performing it, due the language issues.

Physically placing a counter seems clear to me.
Don't hesitate to call a judge, Con.

^ what can you do right, lol i think it was just meant to be. in a big tourny like this, everything plays a role and maybe it was meant for me to lose that match. who knows? lol thanks for siding with me on this tho

Hot deck, excellent techs. Good Job man. All of you asking for a decklist should practically be able to make it out for yourself just by reading his report (I didn't see any use of SSU, Ambipom, Chatot G, or Giratina Let Loose). BDK is so crazy buff dude.

Good job man, way to be super pro at the largest pokemon tourney in the world :fighting:

P.S. Not taking anything away from ErikNance who won 2nd place and also played excellently, but I'm ULTRA glad luxchomp didn't win or top-cut like crazy. Maybe this will tone down the amount of whining on the 'gym on luxchomp and sp in general

P.P.S. On second thought, i just realized this is the 'gym. People are probably gonna start complaining that Sableye is broken

^ yeah BDK is under cover buff. but now everyone knows lol, and im most certain that your right about the gym :lol:

Congrats on the Win Con. Good Luck in Hawaii. Hope to see you in more Tournaments this upcoming year.

~chris

^ thanks Chris!! like i said to Mike your welcomed anytime, N.E is waiting haha :thumb:

Congratulations Con! Sleep is definitely not overated at a tournament like this! The value of sleep is invaluable! Glad it worked for you! Of course, your skill, mastery of your deck, a bit of luck now and then, and your motivation and determination, along with your best buddy Alex by your side, all had a lot to do with your win too!

WAY TO GO from some of your New England fans!!!

~~ Patty, John and Dylan....:thumb::thumb::thumb::biggrin:

Wishing you the best time in Hawaii!! Wish we could be there cheering you on, but please know, we'll be home, but will be wishing you a great time and best ever tournament!!!

^ thank you guys, it was nice to see you guys cheering all the way to the end, and Dylan dont worry man you will get next time for sure bro ad ill be the one rooting haha :thumb:

Congrats Con! I was rooting for you all the way!

Nathaniel

^ thanks you nathaniel!! and beleive ik you were and i appreciate it little buddy :thumb:

Good job on the win man, I'm not trying to call you out because I think you're a great player and played an almost perfect match. You had made a comment during our game about how you thought getting 2 tails on cyrus would give you good luck later on, after seeing how your luck/karma worked out for you in our game I honestly believe you were meant to win good job man, seriously your play skill is intense and you had the match up figured out perfectly I can see though you had a lot of practice against it. Do you think I would have been able to win it all with my list had I beaten you in top 16?

Kyle M.

yeah mirror was one of the matches that i practiced most in playtesting due to my boy alex played the deck too. thankfully too because i played three in a row and there was no doubt about it that your list had the most potential of the three mirrors. i cant really say that you could have went all the way because you might have had a tough time with pooka. during pookas match having the krow won me that match both games. but who are you to have someone like me tell you what you could have done, so imma say of course you could have. you dont need me to tell you that, your a good player and dont need to prove it. i saw it in our games, and theres a reason why you were in top 16 right. and thank you!!! stay tough bro :thumb:

haters gonna hate

anyways, congrats!

^ true that man, true that. so lets give them something to hate about :lol:

Thanks so much man, seriously means alot coming from a Brander haha you guys are awsome!!, well lets see if im the one watching you win next year, that would be cool huh.

Congratz Con on the Nats win NOT PLAYING LUXCHOMP and gl at worlds

^ i have confession i did play luxchomp for states and switched up after regional. and for the record luxchomp is not an easy deck to play!!! there is alot of options to the deck. the net deckers will choose the ok play and the elite players will choose the best play. same goes for sableye, from experience playing both decks.

Thanks for the report. You're a gracious winner. Good draws in Hawaii.

^ Thanks for that!! and yeah i hope for good draws and some good flips would be ok too lol

hey con this is kevin (the other Abernathy) great tournament and awesome meeting you we didnt get to play but maybe some time in the future we will great win

^ ok so i owe you a match then. and it was great meeting you too bro, thanks!

^ 1: well some matches like mirror you need both of your garchomps for and read my final match in my report, i would have not won without it lol

2: what to scoop up? no need for it in my list and the last thing i want to do is play another flip card after my luck with flips haha

3: well we needed something for machamp, and what better for machamp then A BIG DIRTY KROW!:lol: also angainst dialga

4: no room.

and this list is made for our play style, and when i say our i mean me and Alex, we have very simalar tast in this area and compliment eatch other because of it. :thumb:

Im so proud of you winning nationals bro you have no idea. I know how it feels to win an event like that and its just remarkable. It still gives me goosebumps seeing you raise your hand in victory as the United States National Champion. You won the biggest event in history and the adversity you had to overcome makes this title so much sweeter! I always told you that you had the potential to win an event such as nationals and worlds and it was only a matter of time.

You finally did it! You finally got this monkey off your back and its time to have a repeat performance at worlds. Just like jirachi ex in plox were gonna have alot of BIG DADDY HONCHKROWs in sablelock at worlds. You and alexs collaboration that you did with this deck is phenomenal. From all of Team UG, ours hats off to you two more then anything. Way to go con and alex!

You really represented Team Underground well at nationals. The work we do together, the mutual support we give to each other, the balance of contributions we share, the communication we have towards other teammates, and the effort we repeatedly give to win makes this team so much more special then any other. Teamwork goes so much further then individualism and just look at what we can accomplish together. You stepped up your game at nationals and your individual performance was at an all-time high.

Im so proud of you con! Words can not describe how i feel except the need to re-congradulate you over and over again until you get sick of it. Well i already said a lot so i'm just going to close my statement with this. Lets go to hawaii not just hoping to become a world champion but more so representing our country "USA!!!"
