Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2010 Rotations Guessing Thread

The last time Worlds was in Hawaii was 2007, and they threw out all sets except the very latest (DP). So I'm going to guess they do (approximately) the same thing again this year in Hawaii and throw out everything prior to HGSS.

That also ensures there's no more SP pokemon in the format.

personally I'm hoping for a HGSS-on format.

I think the current state of game is getting pretty lame and I don't wanna deal with most of the platinum era cards any more. HGSS may look lame now, but I think the set arc would be really fun to build around in the new format; a sort of reset of sorts.
Another reason I highly want this type of rotation is because a lot of the new cards are only being used as techs if even that. I mean sure you get things like Donphan and Jumpluff, but seriously? Typhlosion is supposedly too slow, Feraligtr is to inconsistent and Meganium is something built for kicks and giggles.
I want to see a slower, more 'retro' format for a while. Let it rebuild itself from the ground up and I guarantee you wouldn't be disappointed.

Hoping for GS-on too. A reset would be nice. Slower format, x2 weakness, no stupid gimmicks (cept for legends, but theyre cool and not too numerous).

However I would agree that PT-on seems most likely. I dont like it, but thats the way it is. On the other hand, we have had our share of surprises regarding rotations in the last few years so anything is possible.

On a related note, when does a rotation gets officially announced? Worlds?

*sigh* this thread will go just the same way as the other one.

Charziard_Luver: I hope they rotate everything HGSS on because HGSS IS KEWL!!one!!! I hope the game gets REALLY slow so I can get my charizard / tyhplosion combo going! SPs are bad because they ruin my complicated, inconsistent setup!

SPSUXORZ: I hope it's RR on because I always lose to SPs! Waaaaah! *cries*

DarthPika: If they rotate PL I won't play anymore.

BabyMario, RyanVergel, Progidal Fanboy, or any other poster that has common sense and decent grammar: It'll be PL - on, so everyone shut up. <- summary of a paragraph (or two)

I think some of you have to look outside your own little bubbles and think about how rotation will affect the organized play community as a whole and the resulting impact on sales. You may wish that the format was HGSS-on, but it's just not logical to think that it will be.

They're not going to rotate out PT. It would be horrible for the vast majority of tournament players and an absolute disaster from a customer satisfaction standpoint.

Can you imagine the reaction from the parents of the kids who play? It's one thing to explain that the kids have to use cards "from the last couple of years" to play in tournaments. It's quite another to have to tell them that they have to use cards from the last, what? 8 months? How many kids will be able to piece together a deck from that? How many parents of casual players would be willing to make a significant cash investment just so that their kid can play in a tournament at all?

The result: Tournament attendance would plummet, especially among the newer players. Sales would drop.

And think about families with multiple players and limited budgets. They have a hard enough time as it is keeping several competitive decks going at once. And these folks are some of the most committed players and volunteers. They may be forced to leave the game, or at least take a hiatus, because they just can't afford to buy that many new cards.

The result: Tournament attendance would plummet AND too many of the people who promote the game and keep OP going will leave the game. Sales would drop, especially because these volunteers are crucial in attracting newer players.

And if it's HGSS-on, you know that the prices of the better cards would skyrocket. That might lead to an uptick in sales of the in-format packs, but that would be wiped out by the drop in sales resulting from people leaving the game in droves.

Ultimately, it's about the bottom line. Nintendo obviously finds that OP is very good for their bottom line. They're not going to cripple OP with an HGSS rotation.

DP-GE. That is my prediction of what will be rotated. I just can't see them rotating SEVEN sets(even if they didn't rotate last year). And IMO, DP-GE would be enough of a shake-up. No Claydol, No Unown G(Gengar SF anyone?) No Dark Palm Dusknior. Its not a lot of cards lost. But they are several staples to many top tier decks.

Just my three cents :thumb:

I'm pretty sure the announcement said they would be rotating 4 sets from now on.
"instead of 9 to 5 sets, we want to increase the cardpool to 13 sets down to 9" or something like that.

I honestly think itll be LA- on for that reason, but it doesnt matter seeing as we wont have md any way you slice it.

That's probably part of the reason they didn't rotate last year. Having Gengar and Machamp in the format with no Unown G would be a disaster. IMO they will stay in or go out together.

I was planning on making a similar comment soon as I read his post, but refrained till I read everything else. Good thing too!

But he's right. You can't rotate Unown G without getting rid of Gengar and Machamp as well, the game would break down.

I guess I just see it differently. Where as you might see it as a disaster, I see it more of a challenge(in both game-play and deckbuilding).

And on a side note, Gengar will have a few less targets(without Claydol). It would be limited to a few uxies and azelf. And Machamp would also be able to keep SP in check.

Theres a difference between a challenge and an impossibility. It can be challenging to fit the Unown G you need to survive Machamp into your Dialgachomp without loosing consistency. If Unown G is rotated, It is impossible to fit in a... oh wait, that's why it would be impossible......

I'd be interested in seeing a HGSS-On format, but something tells me we'll have to wait another year for that. If they decide to move to 2 year rotation schedule, though, it might be possible.

All signs currently would point towards Platinum-On, though. That's where I'd put my money if I had to bet on it.

Is it possible that they could do a reprint of Unown G to keep it in the format? Like keeping the text, putting some new artwork on it, and releasing it as a black star promo or something?

On another note--one thing that gives me pause is the league promos. If I have the info straight, they'll be giving out Felicity's Drawing starting March 22. Has she been re-printed in a PL-on set? If not, then they're giving away a card that will only be good for 4-5 months. Which seems odd.

And does anybody know which side of the DP/PL divide OP8 falls on? (If there is indeed a firm answer to that.)

Many of the League Promos are presumably rotating out, namely Claydol and Uxie.

Not a firm answer, but I would guess that it falls on the DP side of the series divide. POP9, according to Bulbapedia, came out in early March 09, less than a month after Platinum. So I'd think everything before that would go out with the previous sets, but that might just be the way I see it.

PL on is the only thing i see coming... however the only other option i can see besides that is Arceus-on. The fact that Arceus provided very few SP stuff is my only explanation to it.

I think HGSS on would be fun, no where near as fast, but still tons of fun.

I like the idea of claydols and uxies rotating because im sick of the super speed this game has produced. if i wanted yugioh... i'd play it...

@nodobys: you notice that charizard wont be playable if its HGSS on right? i mean i know your making a joke, but at least be format correct?
