Night Maintenance is probably the better of the two because you can choose to only shuffle in 1 or 2 cards as opposed to Super Rod which forces you to shuffle in 3 cards. Obviously this is assuming there are 3 or more cards which you can shuffle in.

Super Rod, on the other hand, has a little advantage over Night Maintenance because the card doesn't state that you have to show your opponent which cards you're shuffling in (if you've ever used Super Rod on PTCGO, you know what I'm talking about).

But yeah, both cards are super awesome and Super Rod is kind of a staple in every deck that doesn't run trainer lock (though you only really need 1). 8/10 - modified.

Night Maintenance was game changing card when it came out, and for good reason. When Night Maintenance came out the only recovery cards that had come out before it (in the EX series) were either specifically for one type (pokemon or energy not both) or supporters (like Holon Farmer) It has since been a staple for any deck since it's an easy card to fit into any deck outside of Trainer lock.

Super Rod is superior in one way to its older counterpart Night Maintenance, and that's the existence of Junk Arm. Junk Arm allows you to reuse it, and thus requiring less Super Rod to be played for a consistent effect.

9/10

That is a bug in PTCGO. In real life you have to show your opponent that you are taking pokemon and/or basic energy cards and not trainers, supporters, special energies, etc...

Of course you have to show your opponent what you put in your deck.

The discard pile isn't secret and for all you know they may be putting trainers/supporters/sp.energies in.

I've found that I'd really like my maintenance back.

Mainly cause I REALLY don't like drawing Cleffa if I have to use Rod early game for 2 Catchered (Killed) Tynamos or something.

8/10 in the format but still significantly worse when compared to NM. (but still a good card in its own right)

Note that the reason that they no longer state this on the card is because it is now stated in the Rule Book.
You have to show.

NM is still a better card then Super Rod, but hey, at least it beats Flower Shop.
NM: 10/10
Super Rod: 9/10

Bit late, but yesterday's CotD Blast from the Past was Night Maintenance from MT, which we surprisingly have a word for word reprint almost in our current format in the form of Super Rod. This is great since Night Maintenance is a pretty powerful Trainer; being able to grab any 3 Pokemon and basic Energy from your discard pile to add back to your deck is extremely useful in getting lost evolutions and Energy back to be used again. And considering the other lesser options we had to use when Night Maintenance left the format, it's well received that they gave us it back again as Super Rod.

Unlimited - 8/10 - Even useful here for its recycling abilities, which is still superior to a lot of other cards out there

For Super Rod though:

Modified - 10/10 - Usually a staple to at least use 1, if not 2 (or more depending on your deck/circumstances) to recycle lost Pokemon and Energy, which is particularly valuable in the mid-late game

Limited - 10/10 - Why not, not like you really need another junk Pokemon or Energy, and it lets you cycle back in that one Stage 1 or 2 that you drafted and need back

Unlimited - 8/10 - See Night Maintenance

BW continues its (annoying) rename-for-the-same-effect theme with Super Rod. The original Super Rod was a Neo Genesis reject trainer card that did something quite different (Pokepedia will give you the card's text). This new and improved Super Rod reflects Night Maintenance, and Nightly Garbage Run before that.

The only real difference between the two is already addressed by those above me. You can choose to take less with Night Maintenance.

What will impact the ratings is how they performed in their tournament formats. NM had Palmer's Contribution while SR has Flower Shop Lady. Both allowed NM / SR in combination with Supporter search to grab what you chose. The major thing is that the current Modified in which SR is played has workable trainer lock. At the time of this review, Vileplume is still a reality eventhough Gothitelle appears to have fallen from popularity (at least in my area). Pokemon Communication allows you to combo with FSL if you do not face trainer lock, and I prefer that. At least Pokemon+energy can get back into your deck. If you put Super Rod in your deck and run into a Vileplume, you can't recover anything at all.

For comparison, these ratings consider strictly recoverly going back into the deck.

Modified - Super Rod: 7/10 due to trainer lock, I prefer FSL.

HP-AR Modified - Night Maintenance: 10/10 . So many Powers that do searches and draws (Evolutionary Call, Invitation, Cosmic Power), the Trainer vs Supporter (Palmer's Contribution) drawbacks do not hold this card back.

Full unlimited - Super Rod and Night Maintenance: 10/10 tie . Again, so many Powers that do searches and draws (Quick Search, Smooth Over + Swing Dance), the Trainer vs Supporter (Town Volunteers) drawbacks do not hold these cards back. Nightly Garbage Run gets a 10+ for being a Rocket's Secret Machine, making it playable with cards that specify that subclass. On the low end of the rating is Time Capsule, I'll call it a 4.5.

What's next, Oak vs Juniper? That actually doesn't sound like a bad idea. It isn't as obvious as one may think.
