After-hours Board-gaming at Nats

Due to the lack of Origins after-hours board-gaming this year, there are a few of us who are interested in doing some board-gaming at US Nats.

So, if you're interested in "lite" Euro and Ameri-trash style games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Alhambra, Sequence, Blokus, Flux, Apples-to-Apples, etc., post here and I'll work at organizing some after-hours games.

For those who are more interested in "heavier" Euro and Ameri-trash games like Agricola, PowerGrid, Puerto Rico, Caylus, Risk 2210, Axis & Allies, etc., post here too.

Guidelines - Post the game name and day-of-the-week availability.

Mods, if this isn't the right place for this topic, please move accordingly.

Ah, Blokus. So enjoyable.

Anyone ever heard of a boardgame from the UK called Stalingrad? I hear it takes about 8 hours to play. We could bring that out!

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Anybody got this game? It looks like the most enjoyable thing ever.

I don't have the laser-tag game, but have played it at a demo. Not too bad as a 2-player strategy game.

No 8-hour games, please. :thumb:

Bring your favorite game if I didn't list it above. I recommend finding and bringing at least one other friend who's interested in your game-of-choice. I'm up for just about anything in 1-2 hour range. The only thing we have definate for now is something in the Catan series, on Friday night after the Prof Cup. Settlers of Catan is one of those entry-level games that gets people "addicted" to Euro-style games. There are about a half-dozen versions/variants of this 1995-96 Game of the Year.

One other thing we plan on bringing are "filler" games - simple/fun games that are very easy to learn and can be played in 15-20 minutes. These include Escalation, No Thanks!, Incan Gold (or Diamant), Snorta, Liar's Dice, Poison, etc. I find Snorta and Diamant to be particular favorites for younger kids.

We'll be bringing a few fun card games (Citadels, Infernal Contraption, Munchkin) and I'd realy like to get my hands on a newer game called Dominion, but we'll see.

If I can find some friends there who also want to go. I am totally in.

One Game I could bring that has yet to have been listed here is The Red Dragon Inn

Not sure what else I have around here, but this would be a great chance for me to learn to play some cool new games

I would love to play Risk. Although, you guys would have to teach me the new version of Risks because I have only played the classic Risk.

I am staffing Nats this year, but I'm hoping to get some play time before Saturday. I'll have a trunkload of games with me:

  • Lighter Fare:
    • Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx
    • Carcassonne
    • Treehouse
    • Gang of Four
  • The Heavier Stuff:
    • Race For The Galaxy
    • Dominion
    • Power Grid
    • Acquire
    • Pandemic
    • Cutthroat Caverns
    • Risk (2008 edition), Risk 2210

I'd realy like to get my hands on a newer game called Dominion, but we'll see.

I'll have it on me and it will for sure be hitting the table at some point if you want to check it out. It's one of the best games of the last couple years -- I still like RftG better, but that's more personal preference, they are both phenomenal games.

I have the 2008 revised version of Risk as well. The core game is the same -- the only real change are the victory conditions. As opposed to the simple "annihilate everyone else" of the classic game, there are now objectives (chosen randomly at the start of the game, before placing armies), and at the end of army placement you place a capital in one of your territories. To win, you must claim three objectives while maintaining control of your capital. The major objectives grant you some sort of bonus for the remainder of the game (like an additional attack or defense die). Besides shortening the game up quite a bit, the goals and choosing when and how to acquire them does add a lot of tactical depth to the game -- still not as deep as, say, Axis and Allies, but it also stays a lot more approachable and faster to play. Any game of A&A typically consumes an entire evening, where you could get in 3 or 4 games of the new Risk.

Risk 2210 is a similar reboot -- same core game with a future setting and a lot of tactical improvements grafted on. You have actual money in this one (called energy), and you can use it to purchase special commander units, and to purchase cards that go along with each commander that grant you a wide variety of effects (like nuking your target territory from orbit, decimating the defending army before you even take a shot from land). You even use your energy to bid on turn order before the start of each round. Unlike the classic game, this one has a fixed limit of five rounds of play, after which a score is calculated (based on owned territories and size of army, among other things) to determine a winner.

I'd highly encourage checking out either one if you liked classic Risk. Risk 2008 you can find at any store (even Wal-Mart). I think 2210 might be out of print by now, but there are still a lot of new copies out there on shelves.

Kaga, Not only would I love to meet you, but I'd love to play some Dominion. As would my girlfriend. I think we should get plenty of Dominion going over the weekend.

Dang, I forgot about Dominion - that's probably the best for Pokemon-type players.

Citadels is another good one for 6-7 players. Love that Assassin!

Red Dragon Inn, good "beer drinking" silly game. And while we're at it, maybe some "beer drinking" to heal them wounds in Bang!

Pandemic might be fun for those who like coops - in an attempt to cure N1H1-type outbursts.

Zombie Fluxx takes this chaotic variation of a great game to morbid heights. Luv this one!

Played 6-player PowerGrid last night (brutal) and Acquire tonight. Won both. Great economic-type games!

You guys have some great suggestions. And don't forget some of the other MB & ParkerBro classics beside Risk like Monopoly and Clue. Harry Potter Clue is my favorite version as well a MegaMonopoly.

Chairman Kaga - your list is exactly the "style" of games that interest me. Certainly, we need to find some time to play some games on your list.

We'll, I'll be in StL Wednesday night and will do my best to find an area we can all meat up on Thursday - Sunday after-hours. Origins had so much table space. StL Nats won't have has much, but hopefully enough to accomodate.

I'll keep you posted.

Anyone interested in EcoFluxx or Japanese Fluxx (Fluxx 2.0 in Japanese- different art with an english title and japanese explanations)?

My house has all the versions except Stoner Fluxx and all the promos.

If you guys need either Classic Risk, Castle Risk, or the new 2210 brought.... let me know... I'm a Risk-freak....

ooo, Ticket To Ride. It'd be interesting to see how other people play it. I only play within my own group.

Red Dragon Inn is a great game that I would play as well. Zot is such a fun deck to play. Do you have the expansion?

I'd like to try playing some more Citadels as well.

@yoyo: I have Khet as well as the lasor-splitting Eye Of Horus piece. For such a simple game, it is quite interesting / intense. I don't think I'll bring it though. We should probably stick to multi-player games, like those suggested above.
