1. Gameplay
Mostly standard Pokémon fare, with a few noteworthy additions. Triple battles, I admit I was very skeptical. However, they've proven to be loads of fun, a rotation battles are awesome in their complex strategy. Poison's been changed to be like Burn, as far as I can tell. My Yorterrie didn't faint, didn't even take damage all the way back to the Pokémon Center.
The rare Pokémon hiding in the grass is quite nifty, even if I've only found one. :/ Also, the increased number of NPCs that heal your Pokémon fits perfectly with the slightly-more-difficult pacing. Overall, 10/10
2. Plot
Granted, I'm not far enough in the game to get to the major climax. HOWEVER, Team Plasma has really struck my fancy in a way Team Magma & Aqua, and Team Galactic didn't. The characters are unique, the theory behind their works is sound, and they're very believeable. That was one of the things that bugged me about Hoenn, especially Team Magma. Really? Burn up all the water? They'd never heard of the water cycle? Even if they had succeeded in somehow making the water 'vanish', all life would have promptly died. Such a noble goal. :/
Also, I love N's character. I've been spoilered to his later character developments, and I have to say they are believeable without being predictable. Plus his theme song is freaking amazing. Overall, 10/10
3. Graphics
This is the only area where not all improvements might have been in the right direction. I LOVE the idle animation to pieces, but it makes the sprites look poorly drawn. I would have liked them to be a bit more careful on the at-the-moment look, instead of the overall look. The sprites for people are... mm, okay. The male protagonist's arms are far too skinny and a bit too long for SD, but it's overlookable.
However, the towns look incredible (I got lost in Hiun, LOL), the routes are individual and charming. The opposing Trainer classes have been rehauled, and I love 99% of them. (I think HGSS's twins were cuter, though) I particularly like the new Miniskirt class, and the new Dancer class.
Taking the first paragraph into account, overall 9.5/10
4. New Pokémon
Ah, the secion where so many people are split. People complain at the top of their lungs that the new Pokémon are just remakes of old ones.
First off, in an interview, the designers stated that THIS WAS THEIR INTENTION.
Second off, well, it's pretty much impossible to pick up on unless you read Japanese, but the game makes it clear that Isshu is A MUCH LATER TIME than the other 4 gens. At one time it talks about Poffins that "ancient civilizations" used to make. Dragonite is referred to as a prehistoric Pokémon. Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore.
The crux of the matter is, we don't know yet exactly how far apart the games are spaced. (The anime we'll ignore. Ash is a Highlander, his mother, Professor Oak, and he all entered a stasis to stick around long enough to see the future. XD) It's fully possible that enough time has passed for evolution to do its thing. (Darwin's evolution, not normal Pokémon evolution.) What's to say that Luvdisc didn't morph over the years into Mamanbou? That a group of Bidoof became bipedal and evolved into Minezumi?
If you think about it that way, a lot makes sense. Like how there aren't any new evolutions of old Pokemon.
The old ones died out. Of course, then when you unlock the National Dex, Someone pulls a Jurrasic Park and revives a whole bunch of 'ancient' Pokémon and sets them loose in the wild.
Anyways, all that aside. The Pokémon designs are overall believeable, even if I don't agree with the way some should have evolved. In my mind, Pokabu should have stayed a quadruped and Mijumaru should have stayed a biped. However, there aren't any Pokémon I consider too ugly to live. Overall, 9.5/10
TOTAL: 39/40. Not quite perfect. As always, the game has room to improve.Plus we have yet to figure out this gen's cloning glitch.
Overall amazing game. Definitely worth it to anyone who reads Japanese.
