"Bye" as in "bye-bye resistance"?

There were long, long arguments about this back when WotC awarded Byes to top ranked players participating in Super Trainer Showdowns.

Bottom line: They took the byes. A definite win was better than a first turn donking via bad matchup was the general consensus.
Additionally, as stated above, byes HURT your opponents' Opp-Win% once you lose a match, thus indirectly helping your chances if it comes down to the tiebreaker.

Well then, if that's true, then the tiebreaker rules need to be updated to show that late entries are the FIRST tiebreaker, even before Opp-Win%.

Yet another reason why we prefer to use our own software over TOM at our local tournaments -- a descrepancy between TOM and the official rules.
LOL:biggrin: If you've been to the TOM section on the OP forums, you'll know that this happens a lot.

Believe it or not, placing late players last in tiebreakers is the correct procedure. The TO procedures were updated for the 2005-2006 tournament year (in October, I believe). I think it's great. I make sure everyone at my league knows this; it gives some of the more apathetic players an incentive to get off their lazy butts and show up on time.

My bad. I'm just a Professor, not a TO, so I don't have access to the TO Procedures regarding Tardiness and how that's handled in the tiebreakers.

So yah, Tardiness IS the first tiebreaker for those of you out there who don't have access to the TO Prodedures.

Thanks for all that info

But to make it very simple ... would you suggest to a player who has 1 or 2 byes to play or use his byes ?
Of course, he could lose his game(s) if he chooses to play, so let's say he wins those

I'm sure Pooka knows all about round 1 losses, but ya like byes should be rewarded. I'd like to see them back in the U.S. as well.

Byes NEVER have a negative effect on you directly until you get to the 3rd tiebreaker, Opp-Opp-Win%, and only if you lose a match in that tiebreaker.

Also, with 1 or 2 awarded byes, you're garranteed to face players who are doing better in the tournament, which increases your 2nd tiebreaker, Opp-Win%.

Using Byes ARE good!

I had to find out the hard way, not only is it a 1st rd loss but it puts you at the bottom of everybody...and that hurts when there are 72 peopla at a tourney
