Can Gengar be stopped?

^and Hippowdon lv.x removes everything that isn't a supporter or Pokemon. And unown g is too much of a tool to think of itself as a Pokemon. So yeah Hungry Hungry Hippowdwon eats it up :D

Dialga gets around Mother Gengar. Easily.

Lol ya. I used 2 play T Tar. U can really abuse Gengar wit ur Sabyles. So in a normal game do u use spinning tail or grind? Also, watta u tech. I like Darkrai.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

YA it's a big counter. One deck idea is Rampardos wit devolutors. 80 + devolutor kills like all stage ones and basics. It is a really solid counter.

Well It depends on the situation. Against a Gengar deck I would probably go for Spinning Tail. Hit their bench, try not to invoke Fainting Spell. But then at the same time you have to worry about Gengar's Shadow Room and Poltergeist so you might just have to Grind and hope for the best.

Darkrai seems to be a nice tech. I don't have it yet, but I'm looking to get it. Right now I tech 1-0-1 Nidoqueen RR. That helps stop Gengar's Shadow room. So then I only have Poltergeist to worry about.

Well...

  • Dialga G/Skunk/GHQ make Gengar a good battle but Flygon destroys Dialga G/Skunk.
  • Beedrill can go toe to toe due to sheer speed.
  • Kingdra w/ Float G can go toe to toe if you use mespirit lock/SSUs
  • Plox has a chance you just have to be real smart AND hit your SSUs
  • Blazekin/Heatran can take care of Gengar but fails miserably to Flygon/Kingdra
  • GeChamp is a good bet against Gengar
  • TTar with Sabledonk also has a favorable match up

It's going to come to matchups.

A well built SP ruins Gengar. ;)

I tend to agree.

I can't really talk much about Gengar matchups (all I have is Theorymon, since almost noone in this local area seems to bother with Gengar.) But, I can't help but notice that the people who are traditionally seen as the better players/deck-builders (like DarthPika) are not running around freaking out about Gengar, as some players are.

From what I can see, Gengar is not the deck to beat at Nationals/Worlds.

The most popular deck, the won that has had the most success in international nats is NOT the deck to beat?

Gengar is a huge threat. If you are underestimating it, then you are either running 2-3 Unown G and other counters to it, or you are being arrogant and naive.

Probably just naive. I did mention that it isn't a deck that I have had much experience with, after all. I can only speak from my own experience, and that is saying that Gengar isn't particularly popular around here. Nor does it seem to do that well in the very few matchups I have seen.

(For reference, the only deck I ever used against a true Gengar build was Machamp/Hippopotas. And, it uses exactly 1 Unown G and is not generally built to donk.)

Lastly, a quick scan over the "What won International Nationals" thread seemed to show that in the Masters division for most nations that have reported, Gengar did not have "the most success." It appeared to be a blend of decks from which Dialga G varients and other SP varients were the dominating strategy. It is certainly there, but is not the deck I would be the most worried about beating.

Playtesting > theorymon >>>>>>>> anyone saying 'a solid list/good player, blah blah, blah' without backing it up or explaining (my pet hate on PokeGym).

Gengar is nothing to panic about cos it is possible to limit the damage it can do, which slows it down and allows you to plan for the worst case IF Fainting Spell hits.

It does take some thought and some practice to do this, though, and it isn't always going to be possible. Gengar might not be THE deck to beat, but it is one that people need to prepare well for.

Octillery (Platinum) beats Gengar. A little bit of luck, a few coin flips, no energy needed, a quick set up...
only energy in hand... they have to 3HKO your Octillery. Wa wa wa...

Dialga G beats Flygon pretty easily.

Also, Gengar has a favourable match-up against GeChamp.

Hi just awnsering the original post.

Yes Gengar can be stopped. Try Poisoning or Burning with Heatran X around. Yes SSU is still there, but you can brush off it, or send it packing with Palkia G Lv. X, or keep it from getting you with DP Dusknoir.

I agree that a good Dialga G deck is definitly something to be scared of. I think that pure toxitank won't see as much play due 2 the Flygon scare. And with Nidoqueen, the poisin isn't as scary. I also play like 5 trainers in my Gengar list.

I didn't read the whole thread, so I don't know if this has been said yet...
De-evoluter OWNS Gengar. Hit then for >,= 80, then Devolve it. They can't use fainting spell because you killed the Haunter or Ghastly. Of course, if there is an Unown G on the Gengar you can't, but you can still get them to 10hp and crobat or poison it...
